"He says it's quite natural for people to look for the best deal, and that a family of four could save as much as $1,000 by flying out of the United States because the Americans subsidize their airports while the Canadians charge them rent and expect users to cover costs like security and air traffic control."

""The Government of Canada should stop treating airports as a source of public revenue," Dawson said. People flying out of Canadian airports often pay 60 and 75 per cent above the airline's base fare to cover taxes and charges, compared to between 10 and 18 per cent in the U.S., the senate report found."

I dunno, considering how few flights most people take, maybe it would be better if the US /stopped/ subsidizing airports so much. Also, I would like a pony. A unicorn pony.

I also know Americans who fly out of Vancouver, BC to international cities because it's often cheaper than out of Seattle.

In the early 90s I would drive from Vancouver to Seattle and fly out of Sea-tac because of significant savings, but then it stopped being a great deal.

Andrew: sure. Issue bonds to pay for high speed rail, then tax domestic flights on routes where high speed rail is a viable alternative. I would also like a pony.

Micah - yeah, gas went crazy expensive relative to early 90s prices.
