Nakachi is the bringer of words that brighten every day.
- LogEx
I like that one, Logical Extremes. Again, the ability to like individual comments or posts would be good here. On topic, Ophelia, who is not that active on friendfeed but filters here anyway, is very good with words. Her updates both entertain and inspire me.
- DO ANYBODY NO MONIQUE
Monique posts something that makes me smile or chuckle just about every day she's active
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
FFing Enigma (aka Tina) is articulate, witty, and passionate.
- Glen Mistletoe
RAPatton might be the best dad i've ever read about (my dad excluded of course)
- Steve C
Nope. You can do it as many times as you like. For instance, I like how ha3rvey is funny and just a genuinely nice guy. :)
- DO ANYBODY NO MONIQUE
Akiva's great pictures of Babby Audrey and Rochelle always make me smile (technically that was just about one person... sorta...) :D
- Lindsay
"i18n" is short for "internationalization", i+<18 letters>+n. By that schema, i80and saved us all a lot of screen real estate.
- DGentry
What can I say about one person? Jason Toney's posts always elicit wonder and insight. RAPatton, I feel like is just full of awesome with his insight and approach to things. Haggis is a barrel of laughs. Steven Perez (when he's not fighting with conservatives) has spawned his own catchphrase. Nicholas K. is just about the most awesome single dad I've seen in a long time. Tina and...

Victor Ganata is extremely intelligent, empathetic and articulate. He has always been exceptional in understanding others whether he agrees or disagrees with an opinion, and he always treats everyone with the utmost of respect.

I wish I could call everyone out. If we interact here on FF, take it on faith that I pretty much love you.
- Derrick
You know me, I can't ever pick one person so I will simply say that every single person I subscribe to is smart, interesting, funny and make being on this crazy little site damn entertaining. Those that I've been lucky enough to get to know beyond the site prove to me every day that everyone who has ever said only weirdos and stalkers are online are just smoking crack.
- ♥patricia♥
I'm with you there, Derrick. There are so many people here who are funny, smart, interesting, entertaining, etc. There are even a couple who make me blush. NOT NAMING ANY NAMES. And then there's that cilantro dude.
- ha3rvey (needs soup)
Steven Perez is a funny guy, and can cheer me up when I'm down.
- Chris, Taskerrific Guy
My first public skype call was with Tad, Glen and the Amber - a lovely conversation with great people. Tad was bold enough to live stream his workstation software install expedition and is a friend to all; Glen is chalk full of incisive wit and has an easy going conversational style; and the Amber was open enough to admit she's shy but worked up the courage to get on the call anyway. Like I said, great people, and quite representative of all the good people in the land of friendfeed.
- Micah Wittman
Derrick tells the truth! There's so many awesome people I can't choose just one.
- Rodfather
Anika Malone is as straight a shooter as there ever has been She will always tell you the truth about what she thinks. I find that to be a quality many people could use more of, and I respect her, and love her for it.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
from fftogo
I can't believe that there are people I'm not subbed too.
- Derrick
I wrote in my 25 things that one of my laments in life is finding a woman who challenges me mentally. Tina does just that. With aplomb. There have been countless times that I was sure of myself and she will make a comment that causes me to completely rethink the issue entirely.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
from fftogo
Louis Gray got me to think about just being myself and not allowing the tech heavy side of FF to intimidate me.
- Derrick
Michael W May and RAPatton have the best tastes in music I've ever seen in my life, I applaud and covet their music collection.
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Derrick and Mona and Akiva and Rochelle and Jandy and many of you make me laugh every day.
- Louis Gray
Derrick is the shizzle, treated me like an old friend. That's one of 500 nice things I have to say about other Friendfeeders.
- Eric @ CSTechcast.com
Rachel Fox takes outstanding pictures.
- Louis Gray
My little pea... fierce as a woozle, indeed! So quiet and unassuming... But so poignant at exactly the right moment. The exactly right phrase to every situation. If she can' brighten your mood, nobody else can, either.

DYSP! Steven and I disagree here and there but in the end I absolutely admire his sense of humor and his passion. A truly A-Lister here on Friendfeed.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
from fftogo
Alex Scoble, Cristo, Chris White and Thomas Hawk vigorously defend their views, but never take it (or make it) personal.
- Kevin Fox
I love the fact that Rochelle always likes the same stuff I like. And that Akiva and I both grew up in southeast Texas.
- Glen Mistletoe
I think, most of all, Derrick has redefined what it means to be yourself. I have had the distinct honor of meeting him and what you see here is Derrick. He shares his joys with us, which is easy, but he also shares his pain with us. I must say that I am jealous of his ability to be open, and I admire him immensely.

I love everyone who gives me a reason to drop my pants... that and Josh Haley.
- Johnny Worthington

- WorldofHiglet
edythe, Morton, and Kol for liking so much, they allow everyone to notice each other.
- Rodfather
I can't thank April Russo enough for all the help she has given me here at Friend Feed. She is awesome in my book.
- Brent Smorgen Bleg
I'd like to know how it Is I'm seem to be commenting right around the time Johnny is droppin' Pants?
- Brent Smorgen Bleg
Way too many good things to say about way too many people - I don't want to leave the island
- Marco(aureliusmaximus)
Anna and Rodfather are great for liking the same random crap I do.
- Amber, Random Time Lord
James (Tsali) you win for putting up with me all this time. Rah for being Rah. Anika for cutting to the quick in a conversation. And etc... you know you rock if I follow you.
- Amber, Random Time Lord
I guess what I am saying is there are roughly a squillion people on Frienfeed of whom I am in awe and also whom I have the most respect.

You are all awesome, but bonus props to Tina (aka) for consistently being the voice of reason in every conversation, to Derrick for being Derrick, Jandy for keeping it real, and Chris Baskind for bringing the issues, Kol Tregastes for non-stop cool stuff...man, I'm realizing I could go on...what an amazing community :-D
- Louis Simoneau
Mattie Kenny is the Dulcinea to my Don Quixote.
- Steven Perez
3 of you are awesome for donating to the cause of FFundercats recently.
- Josh Haley
i like the conversations with katie about books. i like holly because she's a librarian and helped me with a geek problem. shevonne is down to earth and makes me want to buy boots.
- Trish Haley
Actually, many of the people in this thread are in my "FF Favorites" list
- Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)
Every time something mildly bad happens I think to myself "DAMN YOU STEVEN PEREZ!" (hey, I think that's something nice to say about him ;)
- Alejandro
darren heydon is good for warm fuzzies.
- Trish Haley
I can't pick out one specific person. I can name a few names, but there's a specific reason why I am subscribed to every person I am subscribed to. Jandy and Lindsey all kinds of rock, fellow geek chic - so they have to. :P Johnny keeps me cracking up. Zee is my boy for sure, we'd make a ton of trouble if we lived near each other. Monique is straight up, which is win. I can't keep naming people...it would...take up way too much time. I am sure I will though.
- Candace
anika converted me to munchos... yum!
- Trish Haley
joey is charming. Helen is real. Penguin is adorable.
- Laura Norvig
Parth has a wonderful soul. Abby makes me giggle. Carlos and Cee Bee hotties who post some interesting material. Laura Botts and Jim's banter gives me happy feelings all day. Everyone I'm subbed to rocks. That's why I'm subbed to them.
- Captain Bubbles
Robert Scoble was the first person I heard mention FriendFeed.
- ha3rvey (needs soup)
High-five to Leather Donut for bringing us some tits and ass *thumbs up*

oh, it would be so hard to list them all. FF is full of lots of interesting, hilarious, entertaining, and just outstanding individuals.that I look forward to interacting with, many of whom have already been mentioned. yes, even that cilantro lover ;) There's also a fantastic bunch of librarians who hang out here and make me proud to call myself a librarian. yeah, we kinda rule. :)

Michael W. May for his taste in music, Abby Martin for her exceptional good taste in movies (and being a great mother), Håkan and Rutger for their photos and Robert Scoble for the geek stuff. And Esther for being both sweet and smart. But all of the people I sub to are people that brighten my day!

Shey for being the first cool Canadian I have ever met ... Mona for laughing at me when i asked for advice (and then giving me good advice) ... Anika for opening up her home ... Shevonne for being a fly girl with some fire ... I'll continue in a bit
- Amani
I´ll add some love for Derrick as well b/c he was the first friendfeeder to take me under his wing and show me the ropes here. BUT there has since become a handful or two more that define my good friendfeed experience. Intelligence, humour and warmth is abundant amongst you all, so thanks.

It's hard to pick anyone out because my total FF is made up of so many brilliant people: funny, witty, acerbic, insightful, mind-blowing, thrusting, truth-seekers, provocative, timelords (okay, there might only be one of them...). I love the tech, the LOLs (and the LOLcats), the debates, the discussions, the shared problems, the glimpses into others' lives....And Monique, you have started one of my favourite threads so special props to you.
- WorldofHiglet
Monique is a clever woman to kick off such a good thread
- RAPatton
Josh and Trish and Tina and Yolanda and Derrick and DYSP Steven make me smile and laugh when I need it. Johnny Worthington always hears when I post an "OMG help me!" kind of thing, and he usually responds with the most absurd and sweet message. Also, he has haiku battles with me, which is all kinds of WIN. Mark W and Fierce Lindsay make me smile, and Mark VandenBerg makes me LOL. Returning the love to Amani and Abby -- you guys are two of the most honest and kindest souls on FF. Others: RAPatton probably doesn't have a single mean bone in him (ok, poor choice of words there), I could watch Dobromir's feed all day long, Shevonne is a ray of FF sunshine, Akiva is just flat out funny
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
There are so many people here that make being here worthwhile that I cannot single out just one. You guys all rock in your own special ways.
- Alex Scoble
I LOVE ROBERT SCOBLE! ~ just not in that way. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
- sofarsoShawn
Awww thanks Shey! My favorite Jamaican. There is Pea, my fellow DCer who is one of the most genuine peeps up in here!

I love interacting with all the smart, funny FFolks on here! Too many to name, but among my favorites are: Lindsey (the Fierce), Rochelle/Akiva/Audrey, Derrick, Ladybug and Scott, Jim J, RAPatton, Tina (the Enigmatic)... You all rock my world!

there are many friendfeeders i feel particularly warmly to because something of their inner self is always coming out: Michael W. May (who has always been at the top of the list), Morton Fox, Anika/Faboo Mama, Yolanda, rap, Cecily, Tad, Akiva, Rochelle, Lindsey, Lindsay D., Beeling, Rodfather, Ginger Makela, Mark Trapp, Ceebee, Shevonne, Abby Martin, Jandy, Zach Landes, Nathan Rein,...

I 'like' Tyson Key! And a bow toward Trish Haley, thanks for making me blush. Speaking of Haleys, Trish, Josh, and Morgan have all become favorites of mine. MVB makes me laugh like a fool, as does relative newbie Valley... he is one funny dude! Gosh, all these names are coming to mind! I'll probably have to comment more later. I love Akiva for bringing the comedy and the pain. I love Derrick for being as real in the OSH parking lot as he is on FF. I love Monique for being the Pied Piper of the interwebz and helping me recover my sanity. I love James for being so gently poetic. I love Rahsheen for the soft porn videos he always takes in bed. I love Johnny Worthington for being such a cuddle muffin of hair and vulgarity. I love Steven Perez for being a quicker wit than me and nicer than me all at once.

This past week has not been a very good one for me and I might have lost it completely if it hadn't been for Johnny, Steven and Derrick for all dropping their pants for me. I love that there are people on here, that I have never met, that care enough to make me laugh when I am feeling way crappy. <3 And of course there are more, just giving props to those that made me feel better this week :) MWAH!

Also, Nia for her beautiful photos and Mo for making me laugh too :)

I'm ready for more. I love Nia for her kindness and her pictures. I love me some g.warbucks 'cause she's brilliant AND pretty to look at. I love tiffany for sharing the good, the bad and the tipsy. I had no idea when I started this thread that it would blow up like this. I think this is a clear example of the value of friendfeed: the relationships we build. Sure, we have differing interests, politics, social situations and opinons, but at the end of the day, what we come here for are the people. No one exists in a vacuum, and if they did, they probably wouldn't have a friendfeed...

I would rather everyone be anonymous than no one.
- jeneane sessum
Gerard: as I said in the other thread this would be impossible to enforce so I wouldn't worry about it too much.
- Robert Scoble
I commented on your blog: I think anonymity is both a horrible thing and a great tool, it depends on how it's used. In some countries complete anonymity is needed, otherwise they would be put to death or jail. I find its far more respectable when someone puts a real name and face to their opinion, though it isnt always needed.
- Colby Olson
Robert: I just think it's interesting that you want to abolish anonymity, that in itself is an odd thing to say, I suppose. Perhaps you could explain your reasoning?
- Colby Olson
Robert I think we all realize it would not be enforceable but what I'm going after is the idea behind it - that *were it enforceable*, it would be a good thing. To me, the underlying idea that anonymous speech is a bad thing and should be eliminated is rather authoritarian and terrifying.
- Anthony Citrano
Colby: everything that I have seen negative on the Internet is due to anonymity. Can you link to one positive thing? Mini Microsoft but even that would be much better if the guy who wrote it would sign his name.
- Robert Scoble
Anthony: well, I don't see it as a good thing. I have freedom of speech already and would die to defend that. Anonymity is for cowards.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, speaking out on the internet against oppressive governments is not a bad thing. And as I have stated previously, many revolutions start in anonymity. Again, rules of absolutism don't allow for both sides. Anonymity is a tool and it can be used for good and bad.
- Tim Finucane
Kind of a night of drastic comments from the Scobleizer, huh?? Everything negative on the internet is due to anonymity. Yikes thats a whole new round of overstatement. I love following you Robert and agree way more often than not but that's silly.
- Cody Heitschmidt
tim: what revolution started with anonymity? Certainly NOT the American one.
- Robert Scoble
It most definitely did start with secret meetings. The crown didn't know identities until after things got under way.
- Tim Finucane
Robert: You just spawned numerous blog posts and threads with that one. I agree with you up to a point. One of the two that I have blocked on FF was determined to be a troll and supposedly anon. However, there are many countries that speaking up and signing on the dotted line will get both your head and hand chopped off.
- Mathew A. Koeneker
Cody is right. I did overstate that and I am sorry about that.
- Robert Scoble
Robert... i would follow you into the fire.. and here is why we all follow you: Your are passionate. Sometimes it gets in your way because you overstate things but then you admit you are wrong. A guy with 30,000 followers could be big headed enough not to admit something he said wasn't quite right. It's cool that a little guy in Ks can make a contrary statement at you and not just get blocked and you roll over him. Now admit you were wrong on the rule against anonymity too. lol just kidding.
- Cody Heitschmidt
The Internet is and should be about choice. You should be able to choose your level of anonymity. It is not one shoe fits all.
- Jauder Ho
Robert -- There is legitimate reason for anon speech, especially on the internet. What I think you really want is a "Personal Global Internet Filter" that allows the removal of the ugliest side-effects. Even looking to the American revolution, pen names and aliases were used countless times by the likes of Thomas Jefferson, et al. There is a legitimate purpose to it... the statement that no revolution was started by anonymous is a bit of a stretch.
- Mark Philpot
There are a ton of reasons for a person to use a pseudonym on the internet. Especially when you look at people in other countries who can only speak by being "nameless". I even have reasons for using a name that isn't my real name.
- Candace
Don't admit you were wrong on the rule unless you believe it... until you believe ! hehe lol Great freaking discussion who started this whole mess with the rule comment?
- Cody Heitschmidt
I believe it was started by Robert's response to Laura Fitton's question: "What one "rule" would you make about the Internet?"
- Tim Finucane
i'm sorry he's wrong or right depending i've been batting this question lately and i use the internet not to shield who i am but to get people to talk to me who wouldn't do to disability. and if i ever meet any net folks in RL my hope is that they will be over it quicker due to knowing I'm capable and cool to begin with
- Cecil Sandus
To all those under pseudonyms: Why? Are you truly in fear of reprisal? @Dtrizzle a link to your blog profile quickly reveals you. @Corvida do you have a reason?
- Mathew A. Koeneker
@Robert Scoble (scobleizer): What's so negative about my blog? Well, other than the fact that I don't apply myself. Sorry, there've been too many firings and too many "we won't hire you" situations because of uptight control freaks in power who can't stand employees who have their own minds. Anyone who really desires it can find out who MiniMage is, but I feel the better for not broadcasting my real name, and so do my parents.

One rule for the internet is that all data is equal. The second rule is that there are no other rules. I think Scoble's idea of not anonymity is becoming more a reality with people's lives becoming intertwined with their online identity. I would like to preserve anonymity for whistle blowers, etc. Anonymity is a tool that can be used or abused.
- Erik Weese
Pseudonyms mean nothing. People do find out who you are. I spent two days in a courtroom reading my blog entries aloud that were posted under a pseudonym. If you don't want people to read what you write, buy a pen and a blank journal and stick it under your mattress.
- Trish R
MiniMage many many more people have been hired for their blogs than fired for them and I can't think of an instance where someone who was fired wasn't behaving stupidly. We have a whole chapter in our book about that.
- Robert Scoble
yes Dtrizzle that makes sense to me and Trish as for your idea it's an oldie but a goodie...
- Cecil Sandus
corvida isn't anonymous. I have talked with her on the phone. Minimicrosoft is pretty anonymous but I know at least one person who knows who he is.
- Robert Scoble
Dtrizzle - The bit on your educational background while perfect for a resume can provide an easy way to start skip-tracing you. Not that I am. Just one of the little tricks I learned where tech meets accounting.

it is amazing the conversations that can start with a simple word or two. I am at a wedding with people who have left Iran to get the freedom of speech so understand well the problems with using your real name. One guy here was in Iranian prisons for years. He is not afraid to stand up in public against injustice.
- Robert Scoble
@Robert Scoble (scobleizer): Do you remember the Chronicle of Higher Education article where someone talked about being on an interview committee? These EDUCATED folks attitudes were explained thus, "Several committee members expressed concern that a blogger who joined our staff might air departmental dirty laundry (real or imagined) on the cyber clothesline for the world to see. Scoble I think he was referring to the fact that I don't use my real name online at all. As for the person who asked why, because I don't want people Googling me. I like to keep my personal life separate from my online life. Same person, different interactions and I don't want them overlapping in any way, shape, or form.
- Corvida
@Corvida - Why keep yourself so fragmented? Then you have to remember who you with whom. I am with Robert for the most part on this one. You instantly gain more respect from me if your are proud enough of your name to attribute ALL of your actions whether in the VW or RW to it. You are an American are you not? Unless, you have a TS like my folks then who or what are you hiding from. Telling me that it is just a personal choice is a cop out. @Dtrizzle gives some valid rationale for his decision.
- Mathew A. Koeneker
There are certain place on the net that you NEED anonymity !! Take a look at some Forums that ONLY focus on vulnerability disclosures. Each and every one of them is only known by a handle. Chances that you actually associate a handle w/ real name /face is near impossible.
- Peter Dawson
I could argue the same. Most in my situation do take that approach. My disease is just that a disease. It is what it is. Like I commented earlier there can be valid reasons; I just wanted to hear Corvida's rationale both from a personal interest as she is just another human being as well as from the pov of the well known blogger.
- Mathew A. Koeneker
Interesting convo. I actually talked to Mark Hopkins about this. He brought his anon handle into his identity. I've kept mine apart. I don't agree with no one being anonymous; I happily existed online for years and can still write about personal issues and my children without compromising their (or my) privacy.
- Cyndy
I vote for anonymity. If you are anonymous and threatening though, realize that I also support using every tracking method possible to make a community safer. People can not yell "FIRE" in a crowded room. I can not call my neighbor a "RAPIST" just because I feel like it. Regulated Free Speech is ok. Unregulated free speech is not, just as I can not go around town physically hitting anyone I want to ("Freedom of Action").
- Mitchell Tsai
The vast majority of my college friends (Harvard 1982-89, age 40-50) are still petrified of Facebook due to Corvida's concerns - and I have mostly techy friends. @Robert people tend to act differently online than they do in real-life, anonymous or not. They perceive a disconnect between their online profile and life. Makes people be more direct, confrontational, and sometimes hostile. They don't feel bound by the same social rules (have respect for each other).
- Alexander van Elsas
I can fully understand that some wish to be anonymous on the web. But thinking that the things you do online are disconnected from your offline life is stupid. I am not anonymous online and I am aware that my interactions are always visible.
- Alexander van Elsas
I'll just add here that I don't agree that we should chop off our whole arm but if someone can point the finger and label me negatively knowing full well that I am public and not hiding behind a fake avatar, I should be able to see who is doing the labeling and so should the community since the insult was brought to the community's attention by the hiding labeler/harasser. This is a long thread and I may have missed it in a later response, but what about people finding you in person through the internet? I play WoW and my guild leader was stalked by someone who knew only her first name, state, and profession. He called her and flew to her area to find her. WOW. I was trying to figure out why I had this pop up from a year ago. I still pretty much side with The Scoblezier with a few exceptions. If you are blogging, chatting, or even surfing on-line....odds are pretty good that a determined individual or govt entity can find you out. You may think that you are "anon" but in reality you are not at all. Plus, I have a lot less respect for folks esp in this country that are unwillling to put their real names in their posts.

Ok, So Michael Forian's the youngest at 14 and Jack DeWitt Smith's the oldest at 73. I just did the math on all mentioned in this this thread and the average age so far is 43.1 years in age.

Chrome...it's fast, but I also use IE 7 because some sites for work (or MSN Money) don't work well with Chrome.

Firefox when using OS X, Safari on my iphone, and Chrome when I fire up XP. LOVE Chrome which is a big deal considering how much I love Firefox--can't wait to see something for it for the Mac.
- Kelly W.
firefox because I am used to it. opera when FF gives me trouble. not crazy about safari. on those rare occasions when I fire up my PC I use chrome if it's just for something quick. firefox if I am doing dev work. FFs tools just work too well for me and because it's cross-platform I only have to keep one set of keystrokes straight.

Restricted to IE at work. Firefox mostly, Safari occasionally at home. Will eventually try Chrome

1st public internet email was via easy.com ... my own domain via ISP I started in 1993. 1st corporate email was 1978 ish internal on our private global DECNET, connected to public Internet in about 1984.
- Don Strickland
A shell account in '92, I forget with who. Was BBS'ing for years before that, and they sort of had email.
- Bob Morris (polizeros)
mail.com. Alternative back than was only hotmail (I think, can't remember about yahoo) which totally sucked. I think mail.com is extinct now, but they used to have multiple domains. And I had about 5 different accounts. 4, 5, or 6MB, can't really remember exactly. Wow, the days... This is one example (of many) where I'm very happy we are where we are today.
- Vlad Bobleanta
I can't remember. Possibly Yahoo, but I think Yahoo may have come later...
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
Compuserve, then "Niftyserve" the licensee of Compuserve here in Japan. We have it so good now!
- Rick Cogley
Hotmail, way back in 1998 (although before that I had an ISP email through Frontier)
- Brandon Mendelson
Prodigy in 1991, followed shortly thereafter by AOL 1.0 for the Mac, then Compuserve. And finally a POP internet dialup with Chicago's Interaccess in about 1992 after getting Adam Engst's Internet starter kit book that came with a copy of the Mac/TCP control panel on a 3 1/2" floppy.
- Adam Turetzky
My first was at work. heamin@sunshine.vab.unisysgsg.com -- no joke. Then I had an alumna account with Virginia Wesleyan, and then I think I picked up a yahoo account. My first web site was on geocities, and it was so kewl for its time, too. :-)
- Ladybug Heather
Technically, my first email address was on an internal mail service for a large corporation back in 1991, but it was possible to email other people on the internet with a byzantine series of pipes, slashes, gateways and hostnames. My first personal email on the internet proper was with a regional dialup service called pics.com in 1992.
- dthree
I had brlewis@mit.edu in 1986 way before there ever was such a thing as spam. Now there's probably not a single spammer's list out there that doesn't have that address. I still log in there occasionally.
- Bruce Lewis
A tiny, local ISP here in Vermont call Kingdom Connection. I was one of the first 25 subscribers I think, and I still have my original e-mail address. Scary.
- Bob M. Montgomery
Prodigy. Then AOL. Then Berkeley.edu followed by Earthlink.net, Home.com, ATTBI.com, and then Mac.com. (Also in there, GMail, Excite, Netscape, and work accounts, etc.)
- Louis Gray
Hotmail - Sometime in 1997 I think. My first email account for work was in 1998.
- David Yarnell
AOL. I was so excited to get Hotmail because at the time, it was cooler than AOL. Heh. Then Yahoo and now Gmail. And that's it, not counting work/school accounts.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Mine was AOL over my 2400 baud modem.
- Allen Blair
<student id>@<sydney university undergrad domain), then something at extro.com.au which was the Sydney University dial up provider then good ol iname.com. I thought that would be my non service provider bound email address, till they decided to charge for it. Thank god for gmail.

Actually, my first email was with MCI*Mail. NOT internet email. The next one was Compuserve. Still not internet. My first internet account was on a server at my employer in Austin.
- Glen Mistletoe
My math prof gave me an account on a NeXT box.

AOL for sure -- had one under my parents' account, probably early to mid 90s. Signed up for Hotmail in 1997 when I was in college (still have that account, though I really never use it). Of course, I had a standard-issue "geneseo.edu" college account starting in 1996 when I started college.

Compuserve (73000,673 if memory serves me right)... and some other obscure usenet type account through a local BBS.
- Carlos Granier-Phelps
Hotmail. Agree it was awful! I can't believe I ever thought it was okay for the first page of my email client to be a page filled with ads, as opposed to the actual inbox.

oh shit... it must've been Compuserve, although I don't remember if I had real email in there. If not, Yahoo Mail was the first portal mail I had (and I had jungleg@yahoo.com, but then lost it for some reason and couldn't get it back)
- Jorge Escobar
Prodigy! Oh wow. That was a long time ago. I remember I had some 25 cents an e-mail plan. I used to get in trouble from my parents when I went over my allotted amount. I can't imagine paying 25 cents an e-mail today.
- Jennifer Mitchell
Local ISP, Connect2 I think was the name. Haha. Didn't even have 56K internet speed yet at the time. First web based email was Hotmail before Microsoft acquired it.

- Bonnie Foster
Hotmail for me. I haven't used it in 3 years.

Messaging on the Univac in late 70s probably, at the college. BITNET, HEPNET, ARPANET in late 1980s. (Ignoring the BBS phenom of 80s.) EDU & GOV 1989+ My own domain I hosted around 1994. NEVER AOL or that fake-Internet stuff of the mid-90s. Ewww! After years of GOV, moved to COM at work in 1999. Started using GMAIL for all my personal mail when that was in Beta. I now have about 20 domains forward to GMAIL.
- John Johnson
not counting university and school, or BBSes? My first email account would then have been jnebbe@ibm.net (back the first time when IBM did internet services) - they were one of the few to have reasonable dial up plans with a multi-country presence - and I was using OS/2 a lot then too. After it got bought by ATT and they changed the address, I decided that I would always have my own domain for email, so I would never lose people because I lose an email. Hosted it myself for years, now it's all with fastmail
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
We should all get together and pitch in on something for Robert Scoble to win if he can go a whole week without mentioning Celebrities on Twitter and the Suggested User List. Maybe he would put something on the line in return? He has to give the FF community some shiny new object if he can't make it. Will Robert accept?
I vote to just hide the entries. Except...I could get something if the challenge is accepted. So, I vote that he wins a...random but potentially expensive domain name. ...I got nothin'.
- Candace
Rob: heheh. I tried to go a week without mentioning Twitter and failed, so I don't take these kinds of bets.
- Robert Scoble
haha. I thought it would be fun to see what you'd say anyhow. I can't imagine you going a week without talking about twitter - that's why I left it to talking about the celebs and the SUL lol!
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
there's no way i could go a week. even if i wanted to. i know id slip.

I am all over the board. lately, I've been listening to Silversun Pickups, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Killers, Bob Mould, but you know, I still listen to hair bands, so I'll try anything pretty much :)

oh, I'd meant to check out the Bird and the Bee. see, this is my problem. I hear of bands but always forget who they are :)

I think they should handle this with the current "disability" access system (however they handle the parking permits, etc.) because most private business are total crap at implementing something like this on their own. I don't mind walking a little extra distance at the super market, but I'm not sure why the local one needs both 20 disabled spaces an an extra 10 expectant mother spots. I think those women should get to use the disabled slots as they are rarely all used, and they're closer.
- Jennifer Dittrich
Let me rephrase. Of those who say "no", have you been pregnant?
- Rochelle
I can get behind Jennifer's solution of letting them just get temp disabled tags.
- Matthew DeVries
Jennifer, I'm not sure about other states, but WA state does allow pregnant women to use disabled parking spots, as long as they get a temporary disability parking permit.
- Rochelle
yes, especially on public transport or public parking
- Steve C
K, we got that fixed. Next issue? We should have the world fixed by tuesday.
- Matthew DeVries
why should they not get special priviledges eh ? after all , if somethings happens to the women, the law generally tends to smack you for injury's of 2 people.. correct ?
- Peter Dawson
No. The extra discomfort is good practice for what's to come.
- Mark H
Mark, what do you mean? When I was pregnant, I had my pubic bone separate. It's not an uncommon complication. However, I'm not sure how a broken pubic bone prepared me for having a child.
- Rochelle
I'm going with "no" . Only because I see too many pregnant women in public places who expect *everything* to be handed over to them, and expect to be waited on hand and foot. Yeah, I get allowing them to park close to a facility because walking is tough for them, and I understand other small things too. Special treatment? No. You're pregnant, not handicapped.
- Candace
Candace, this post is about allowing them to park close to a facility, not about "special treatment". Am I missing something?
- Rochelle
I skimmed the article and it basically said people should be courteous (duh), and the expectant should not take advantage of it (duh)... so what's the issue?
- LogEx
I don't mind the courtesy. The sign that gives priveledges to parents of young children, I do not. It's enough to endure them in the store, in the theater, in a resturant. No breaks for you!
- Mike Lewis
As with anything, special privileges should be a case by case basis. Some women are so high risk that they'll miscarry if they sneeze wrong.
- Jess
Rochelle, by forcing pregnant women to park far away it helps them both to get extra exercise and to build up more of a tolerance towards the pain and anguish of childbirth. I realise it's not a popular viewpoint so I won't be suggesting it should I ever run for political office.
- Mark H
I'm not even as open-minded as Candace. "Pregnant" is no more a disability than "fat ass", a "disability" with which I am intimately familiar.
- Roger Benningfield
Jess: In those cases, I'd have no problem giving someone a temp disability sticker or something.
- Roger Benningfield
@Mark I can see where you are going, but like Rochelle said, pregnancy can cause major discomforts to a woman that really has nothing to do with exercise.
- Shevonne
Mark, that's sweet and all, but uninformed. My experience with childbirth, for example, was pain-free. No anguish involved. And like Shevonne said, exercise has nothing to do with any of it.
- Rochelle
@Rochelle, I understand courtesy and think they do deserve that. Parking close to a facility is fine, or allowing them to rest somewhere, etc. etc. However, the article mentioned a woman in a restaurant and what happened with her. To me, that's what I see as pregnant women who expect special treatment. My cousin felt like the world owed her a favor when she had a baby. She wanted to be...

Somewhat related: Older generations were smart to tell men to give up seats to women. Today you're expected to give up your seat only if she's pregnant or elderly. That puts you in the position of judging who's pregnant and who's elderly, and you insult her if you get it wrong. Men 50 years ago only had to judge who's female, and we're adequately good at that.
- Bruce Lewis
the only special privilege would be to stop the tenure/promotion clock. you cannot be expected to publish or perish while expecting
- enza (aka iVenus)
Honestly, no. To me, mothering is a choice, not a right. However, I'd go with Jennifer D.'s suggestion of allowing them to use handicapped parking spaces. Everything else should be set as common courtesy. On behalf of both the pregnant women and the persons around her (if someone who's 8 months pregnant needs a seat near the door on the bus, for example, sure I'll get up for them if I'm...

- Helen Sventitsky
actaully on second thought, that is plain wrong.. .. how does an establishment figure out a painfull child bearing vs a normal child mother mother who has no ill effects ? "Pregnant" does NOT equal "disablity" !~!
- Peter Dawson
@Helen There are also the "Parent with small children" parking spots. Do those bother you as well? Just wondering @Bruce I feel sorry for men nowadays.
- Shevonne
Is there no common sense don't be a dick issue we can't deconstruct and mental masturbate ourselves into overanalyzing ecstasy? Come the fuck on. It's a pregnant chick. She just wants a parking spot. Just say yes and go on with your day?
- Matthew DeVries
@Shevonne, they wouldn't bother me as much, other than the necessity for them being there in the first place. Would small children pertain to two or three year olds? Carrying small kids in carriages? That I could probably understand.
- Helen Sventitsky
My wife is pregnant, I'm going to go with no on this one if we're talking a bulk "You're pregnant, you can park here" type of rule. IF you're in your later stages of pregnancy, I'd be ok with the parking pass, but not for the full 9 months.
- Brandon Mendelson
Matthew, IMO, it's not a "don't be a dick" issue. It's just that there are some here who wonder why certain privileges would be given to a segment of our population who chose to be pregnant. Personally, I would put pregnant women in the "temporarily handicapped" area and treat it accordingly, which, according to Rochelle, is already being done in WA. I don't think anyone's here is...
- Helen Sventitsky
@Rochelle - that's one of the things I like about WA; I figure that puts it in the category of any other health-related issue: if it is really difficult, due to a medical condition, to do certain things, then we have an OK system in place to help handle that :)
- Jennifer Dittrich
I'm ambivalent. I had to be on "modified bedrest" so on the rare occassion that I could go out and about I think a disabled permit would have been appropriate. I would rather see more family friendly parking spaces (like at IKEA) then spaces specifically designed for pregnant women though.
- adf
Matthew: Why does it matter that she's a pregnant chick? What if she's just a 250lb chick? Or a 300lb dude? Or a dude with really bad allergies, who needs to get inside the store as quickly as possible? Or a chick whose "office dress" policy requires her to wear heels, even on a slippery, rain-soaked day? There are lots of people who have issues, and I'm not sure why we would single out one specific group for special attention.
- Roger Benningfield
And that notsuredness is why stupid courtesy laws are needed.
- Matthew DeVries
Hey, I don't drive, and I don't think I've ever gone through a public door without holding it for a woman, an elderly person, a disabled person, or even a smaller guy. Courtesy is cool. It's the whole "I breed, therefore I am" ethos to which I object. You can be a dick to virtually anyone in this society, no matter what their situation, and most people will just shrug and go on. But if there's a kid involved, people lose their frakkin' minds.
- Roger Benningfield
Welcome to social contract of the country in which you chose to live. Sorry you had the wire-mother. Have a fruit roll-up.
- Matthew DeVries
Y'mean the same social contract that also demands that the icky homos stick to the closet, and expects Muslims to just man up and accept that this is a Christian nation? There are plenty of flaws in that unsigned deal, and telling people to shut up and accept it never got us anywhere.
- Roger Benningfield
See, there's yer problem... you haven't read the fine print! :)
- Roger Benningfield
Roger think you're making yourself sound harsh, but above you commented that in cases where the woman is at a health risk, you would make certain allowances. So it's up to the doctors to decide who those women are. Which makes it easier for men to chose old fashioned chivalry to all pregnant women and/or kindness to a person (pregnant or not) in need.
- Jess
I am oh-so-amused at how this went from "be nice to pregnant ladies" to "icky homos stick to the closet".
- Rochelle
Rochelle: No, it went from "should pregnant women get special privileges" to "that's the social contract, shut up".
- Roger Benningfield
And Roger in a fit of trueness decided to attach a bunch of effed up riders to the social contract, hoping the executive would sign it with them in there. Now the shit's gotta go back to committee. Oh bother.
- Matthew DeVries
Matthew: I didn't add 'em... they've been there all along.
- Roger Benningfield
Yes. I think so. In Australia we have 'Parents With Prams' spaces close to the door, often next to the disabled spots. While they are not enforceable by fines like that of disabled spots, they are governed by the public law of "Really mate? You're in a sports car and you couldn't park 8 spots down. You're a fuckwit". This is not so much a 'privilege' so much as a safety issue. Having...

When I was 28 weeks pregnant, I flew from EWR to FLL on Continental Airlines. I was uncomfortable and wanted to get on the plane early to avoid being bonked by some suitcase. The agent at the gate yelled at me and said I couldn't board early because "pregnancy is not a disability." One of the mothers nearby muttered, "um, yeah it is." I, too, was appalled. I filed a complaint against the agent and corporate told me they put the agent back in training.
- Tamar Weinberg
"However, I'm not sure how a broken pubic bone prepared me for having a child." Exactly, Rochelle. I'm in super pain where I walk right now and I'm not sure how this is going to prepare me for motherhood. I'm certain with all the discomfort I'm going through (33 weeks now) that life will be *easier* when the kid is born. I even expect to actually sleep. Yes, I'll *definitely* get more sleep with a kid to breastfeed given the circumstances at the present. I don't think that some people get it.
- Tamar Weinberg
I wasn't going to say anything else and just let it go rather than explain to Shevonne and Rochelle but, since Tamar brought up the broken pubic bone again I suppose I should just clarify: I was not being serious when I was suggesting women should walk to get them in shape for childbirth. When it comes to some people not getting it ... well, there, I've said it. Sarcasm, I know, doesn't always come across in written form. I'm very, very sorry. That wasn't sarcasm, by the way.
- Mark H
Usually I don't bitch about things, but I have to say this. People, we are on the Internet and many of us don't know one another. How can someone possibly know if someone is serious or not? Can we see your body language or tone of voice? No, so you shouldn't get pissy because we didn't pick up on your sarcasm.
- Shevonne
I wasn't being pissy. I was trying to stop others from assuming I'd been serious. But thank you for telling me not to be pissy without being pissy.
- Mark H
I think so yes, it just makes things a little bit easier for those who might be uncomfortable at the late stages and such. I remember my friend being really emotional at about 6/7 months gone and just needing to get things done without hassle. Sometimes it was easier for everyone else too ;)
- Charlotte M
Just in case anyone misunderstood me, I'm with Mark. I KNOW women are allowed to drive and I don't have a problem with it. That was also sarcasm. Though no one seems to have been either amused or offended. Nevermind.
- Nathan Rein
Sorry Mark -- I made a general statement not really directed at any particular individual. In fact, I moused over your name and figured you were being sarcastic after reading your bio, but on the other hand, it doesn't seem that Roger was. I'm fairly certain that if I was a non-pregnant "fat-ass," I still wouldn't be as uncomfortable as I am right now.
- Tamar Weinberg
Wow...I was told recently that my ex-husband disappeared. Indeed it seemed he had. There was even a few people who thought he might be gone (yeah...) . I tried to find him through Google, and nothing. His last known address was ours which was four years old. His name turned up *nowhere*. I was concerned until I searched on a whim for his old e-mail
address. Xbox live's website showed up. Sure enough, there was his Xbox Live profile. Last seen online? Two days ago. He's fine...he's not around for a reason. LOL ahh the internets. I found him when no one else could.

I see. Thats when you have them wacked or bury them yourself.

I used Zaba. That's the one that showed our last address as his. He did a good job in keeping his online trail stealthed.

Thanks Zee. I could have used http://tineye.com but too lazy to save, crop and upload the image for that. And Friendfeed is faster anyway ;) Their logo isn't easy to recall IMO.

Use all of the above (except for the flowery icon, have no idea what that is), FF addict, and still have a life thank you very much. If I'm not on my PC I'm out :P

So far, Janet is winning the "Caption This Stupid Ass Pic" contest!!!
- Brad Williamson
Thanks Janet, I'm now crying AND giggling ,-)
- Jess
I'm mentally writing a whole story to try and explain WTF is going on in this picture and how it happened. Because honestly it makes no sense. "Bob's girlfriend hired the cast of Cheaters to see if her boyfriend was cheating on her. Sadly, they had to tell her he was fucking an accordion, because it had more response than her, in bed." This is an image from when Bob found out he was being filmed.

Sadly, Naked Punk Polka never really took off. Bob was force to relive the good ol' days in the comfort of his bedroom.

"WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE, WE GOT FUN AND GAMES!!!..."
- Brad Williamson
I think I'm going to have to go with Akiva on this one. Although, Brad, that's hilarious.
- Jimminy
I feel stupid. I simply don't get Akiva's. No offense to her, of course, but could someone explain her caption to my dumb ass? If it's a crude caption (which, I think it is), please be use the most descriptive words possible.
- Brad Williamson
+1 Jason. You've made me feel even dumberer. Akiva... Sorry dude / lamb in a suit. ;-)
- Brad Williamson
Akiva is a man. It comes from "The Silence of the Lambs" movie.
- Candace
Brad - it's a line from Silence of the Lambs. The crazy suspect holds a hostage at the bottom of a well and lowers a basket of lotion and then yells, "It puts the lotion on its skin."
- Jimminy
I'm sorry, James, but that made zero sense to me. Once again, color me stupid.
- Brad Williamson
WTF?? They cancelled The Lawrence Welk show???!!!
- Steve
Nice, Steve! I had to Googlay the dude, but now I getcha! Good one!
- Brad Williamson
Wow, I haven't been accused of being a female on FriendFeed since someone wanted to include me on a list of influential female bloggers. I'm pretty awesome, you know.

Lol, pronouncing Viagraccordion out loud makes me laugh.

In the end, Lyle decided to accept the job as greeter at the Musical House of Horrors. It was easy work. He got a chance to play again. And they let him scream all he liked.

In all honesty, it was expected. Somehow...Brad had a feeling this would be it. I think he knew that his Grandpa was tired this time, and he was just ready to go.

Maybe you have something on your face. My dog does this then looks away real quick like she doesn't want me to see her looking at me.

Two days ago http://friendfeed.com/louisgr... Louis Gray pointed out on FriendFeed that when a new user signs up for FriendFeed that they receive 24 suggested FriendFeed users to follow. I'm one of those 24. There is no mystery to how these 24 users are selected for promotion on the FriendFeed platform, they are simply the 24 FriendFeed users with the most followers. Once a user subscribes to someone this list changes. it roughly becomes the most popular people followed by their friend(s). And while Friendfeed's objective and simplified method of promoting users to new sign ups is probably better than Twitter's much criticized subjective method of elite favoritism, it could be vastly improved yet.
- Thomas Hawk
But the "most popular" under this scheme is also self perpetuating is it not? Is that a good thing? Perhaps some sort of other automated suggestion list would be more appropriate?
- Brian Sullivan
Yeah Brian, read the linked article :) He covers that sufficiently, I think...
- Joel Bennett
I think rooms/groups or whatever they're calling it now should be featured more prominently for old and new users alike. That takes care of both the geography and the interests.
- Eric P
Joel, Yeah, I've got a number of imaginary friends already set up from Flickr. But these are problematic as well. You can't share their stuff with other people on FF, you only see their flickrstream (I want to see their blog, their Flickrstream, their twitter acct, etc. all together), plus having to make these one by one is a pain. It would be much better if FF could just use the Flickr...

- Thomas Hawk
Brian, yes, the suggested user list should *definitely* encompass more than just popularity. If you read my article above you'll see that I offer up a number of suggestions on how to improve/fix this. There are ways to deal with the self-perpetuation problem with the current system.
- Thomas Hawk
Thomas this is a very good suggestion. Lets new users get out of the simple popularity based recommendations, and get more into interests and areas, which I very much like. Caters to the geeks and non-geeks alike. I especially like the "take 200 and randomize 24 out of the 200" -then even longer time users can go back to the list and get a fresh view. I think that if FriendFeed won't implement something like this, someone else should, but it would be best if we culd convince the FriendFeed crew to do so.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
The Flickr API does indeed expose your contacts in terms of their user id and screen name on Flickr. FF could match this info against Flickr accounts that have been set up by FF users.
- Ole Begemann
Ole, that would be my number one FriendFeed request. I'd love to be able to add all of my flickr contacts on FF that I'm not already following. I'd love to be able to invite all of those that are not here yet via the flickrmail system as well.
- Thomas Hawk
The most distinct problem with the "popularity" based recommendations (here esp) is that they're totally oriented towards one group of people. If you don't like tech-journalists, you're not going to like the recommended list here now. I ALSO really like the idea about finding the new most active/popular users (the ones with less than 60days here) Great way to discover new talent.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Thomas: Not much of a flickr user, aren't flickr / yahoo contacts integrated? (I guess they must not be)
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
One of the problems I see with the suggestions is they involve introducing more information requirements for the user to specify (geography, interests) which imply changes elsewhere in the system. Surely there is something simpler that can be done without that extra baggage to introduce some more randomness?
- Brian Sullivan
Rob the new active/popular users tab would actually serve two purposes. it would be great for people like you and me to find new users to follow, but it would also provide valuable interaction to new active/popular users bringing them into the fold so to speak. I think some people sign up for FF and because they are new and unknown they get no interaction and get frustrated and quit. This would help them get exposure and engagement making their first impressions of the service better.
- Thomas Hawk
what would be interesting is to ask the new user what they are interested in, then show the 24 people that have registered the same interests/tags in their FF stream. Like for example, Love comic books, comic book goodness, rapatton, me, and ect. That at least would be more "democratic", but then there I go thinking again :-)
- Dan Morrill AKA Techwag
Rob, I'm pretty sure that my Flickr contacts are not integrated with my Yahoo mail. It would be cool if they were. Yahoo owns Flickr but the Yahoo mail and Flickr systems are still distinct as far as I'm aware.
- Thomas Hawk
Dan, exactly. by letting us stipulate interests, friendfeed could create a suggested users by interests tab. I think you'd get a far different initial friendfeed experience if you had a tab for 24 (or even better paged) people interested in say photography than in the current 24 being promoted. Whatever your interests, music, guitar, comic books, movies, cooking, etc. I actually think...

The "suggested list" should go "both ways": to subscribe and unsubscribe. Friendfeed should give me a list of, from those I follow, the one's is "less worth" following (I have everything, don't click in their links, never like or comment...)
- Marcos Marado
Tina & I pointed out this deficiency a while back in April where I cited an Allan Stern article which was perhaps the first to point out this lob-sidedness wayyyy back http://friendfeed.com/sofarso... kind of fell on death ears *shrug* I'm not a blogger
- sofarsoShawn
Yahoo and Flickr contacts are completely separate. Thomas: Inviting people via FlickrMail is not straightforward because Flickr doesn't expose FlickrMail via the API. Understandable IMO for spam reasons.
- Ole Begemann
I agree with your suggestions, as well that a good chunk of the current 24 are not really engaging in the conversation here and whilst popular don't really deserve to be on the recommended list. It would definitely be better to see people who are engaging more here... As opposed to just having their tweets feeding through.
- Travis Koger
I haven't looked at the suggested list since last year. It was something very similar even then, people with the most followers were chosen, but they aren't always the most active people. I think there could be a different way to suggest people to new users, maybe a way that chooses suggested users by interest.
