I don't think the Secret Service shows up without a reason. And also: leave it to the Vancouver Sun to use a photo where the President looks high.

"Victoria police chief Jamie Graham was lying low Wednesday after reportedly disclosing that an undercover police officer, posing as a bus driver, had infiltrated a group of anti-Olympic activists on their way to a rally. “You knew that the protesters weren’t that organized when on the ferry on the way over they all rented a bus … and there was a cop driving the bus,” Graham told an amused crowd attending the Vancouver International Security Conference on Monday."

"Fifteen years ago, IKEA received bomb threats when it included a same-sex couple in a TV ad. Even this year, the company faced controversy in Poland for a similar print campaign. Including male or female homosexual couples in non-gay media advertising (however innocuously) has long been a hot-button issue, especially in more conservative areas. But look at what's happened here in Canada. (F)or TD on the Web, including gay couples in their ads seems to have become routine, just part of the regular range of ad campaigns. That's a good thing, and our Canadian experience in general is good evidence against those elsewhere who claim that legalizing same-sex marriage will somehow ruin life for the rest of us. Even the big old conservative Canadian banks don't think that anymore."

I don't think it's fair the face of homosexuality in hockey should be a 20-year-old college kid, but Brendan is more than willing to be the guy, which awes me. Can't believe Miami's response on this one. I find it weird to consider that they're as accepting about Brendan's homosexuality as it comes across in the ESPN article -- I went to school there, and it's hard for me to think of another public university as conservative and homophobic as Miami was. Maybe they've changed a whole lot since the mid 1990s, who knows.

Perhaps it says less about Miami U. than it does about how people's attitudes change when they personally know someone who is gay.

The whole thing about "you are blah blah blah" really grated on me, when it went on for so long.
- DJF
@DJF - the Vancouver Sun used to have a guy who did the whole cut-rate Hemingway or second-person-perspective writing way too often. So I'm kinda used to grating writing styles in sports articles.
- Andrew C
Funny, it was the style that actually made me sit through and read a sports article to the end.

I agree, DJF. But they I realize the journalist was probably using it to get people to empathize (esp. geared to people who probably have trouble empathizing until something's happened to them).

I used to go to the ROM as a kid. I'm a big fan of this kind of architecture, and I really like this building. The list is somewhat questionable, with this and the Pompidou in Paris on the list as well. But one building I really do agree with is Melbourne's Federation Square. Damn that place is ugly.
- Will Higgins™
I like the ROM as well -- on the inside it seems the changes are quite nice but to me this thing looks like a wart on the building from the outside. The Gehry AGO mods I find quite pleasing though inside and out. Maybe it is just a matter of taste.

"The series paints an ugly picture of an Olympic system that sanctions a virtual monopoly of ticket selling in the U.S., and inflates ticket and hotel prices at the expense of the public. "What we discovered," Willmsen said, "was that the last persons served and priority for tickets was the public. The IOC 'family' and sponsors came first." Not exactly a revelation to British Columbians. From our perspective, the well-documented frustration with the scarcity of tickets is also well down on the list of concerns."

A Toronto man found not criminally responsible for sexually assaulting a woman because he suffers from sexsomnia will not face any restrictions on his freedom, the Ontario Review Board ruled Thursday.

The bizarre assault took place in the early hours of a July 2003 house party in Toronto. The woman was roused from sleep following a croquet tournament in Toronto's Beaches community by a strange man lying on top of her, engaged in sexual intercourse.

Court later heard that Luedecke had taken magic mushrooms the day before the party and had consumed 12 beer, two rum-and-Cokes, and two vodka drinks in the hours leading up to the assault.

@John sounds like it -- but the part that gets me is that the guy had like 15 drinks and shrooms that night and somehow the judge seemed to ignore that.
