"It is romantic to think that Benjamin Franklin, the greatest printer of his day, was there in Dunlap’s shop to supervise, and that Jefferson, the nervous author, was also close at hand. If so, the Declaration was not only written by the founders, but perhaps set into type and printed by them as well. In every way they could, these ink-splattered geniuses willed the document — and by extension the republic — into existence. We’ll never know for sure. But as Franklin might have appreciated: print the legend." - Carla Thompson via Bookmarklet

This is obese - I don't even want to see "overweight." Colorado is the only state where it's not a granted that 1 out of 5 is obese (though by the looks of things, the average is 1 out of 4). Does this include children? Pre-edit: clicked on the article - the overweight numbers are amazing. I'm certainly in these categories - I must disclose. - Vince DeGeorge
cool chart - looks like our primary home (ct) is #3 & secondary (vt) is #5 :) - mike "glemak" dunn
Like we always said back in Arkansas, thank god for Mississippi and Louisiana or we'd always finish last! - Jesse Hattabaugh
I loved visiting Japan, where people seem to be healthily thin. It's very sad the changes since I was in high school. At a pediatric obesity presentation at Stanford, they showed a slideshow of obesity/state over the past 25 years, and it was really sad to see the whole country become fatter & fatter. An Economist issue from the past year shows that it's a worldwide trend - poor & rich countries... People were so much thinner when I was in high school. :-( - Mitchell Tsai

This photo says so much about what a lot of people simply don't understand about the Middle East. - Akiva Moskovitz
What is it that we're not understanding, Akiva? - David Worrell
I'm an absolute subscriber in tolerance for others' beliefs and values, but there are times where you have to hold the line. There are some cultures in the past that featured human sacrifice, but that doesn't mean you have to tolerate it. This is subjugation of women, clear and simple... Basic human rights take priority above culture and religion in my view.... - Chris Reed
Akiva, I'd love to hear more of your thinking here. I'm with Chris - any situation in which a woman is rendered virtually invisible by her clothing is subjugation. - Carla Thompson
Carla, Chris puts it well for this particular context. I go a bit further and see this as just one example of a far greater underlying problem. This is a dangerous and inflammatory topic we're skating around, though. - Akiva Moskovitz
@Akiva: If I read you correctly, you're talking about the underlying "Death to Israel" theme we see perpetuated? - Chris Reed
Must be pretty miserable under there. From my non-educated stand point, the women are covered to show they are modest and to prevent the men from falling into temptation. However, clearly this shows the men are the horn dogs, so why don't we just blindfold them? Why do the women have to disappear under an acre of black material? Although... as a woman... sometimes this outfit (minus the headgear) would be a great option. - Yolanda
Interesting photo and even more interesting comments. I will be interested to see the Middle Eastern FF'ers comments later on today. - Mathew A. Koeneker
She does look like Palpatine. :) - Mathew A. Koeneker
Chris, no. Israel's also just a small part. - Akiva Moskovitz
Wait, what about Israel? I thought she was being compared to Palpatine not Palestine. [insert "occupation" joke] - Karim
I didn't think that women were allowed to have occupations! [rimshot!] - Akiva Moskovitz
I think Evil Overload is more an avocation than an occupation, no? - Cyndy
I've actually met some folks who think Westerners oppress women by forcing them to expose their breasts and thighs to strangers, not to mention sticking sharp metal pins through their earlobes. Not that I agree, of course. I'm not some simple-minded relativist or whatever. - nathan
I will admit that the whole burka with maybe a bigger face hole is a tempting option for say, eras of bloating and/or bad hair days. - Cyndy
Yeah, I still see it as intrinsically different. A woman in California isn't going to get jailed or suffer an 'honor killing' because she won't walk around in skimpy clothing. - Akiva Moskovitz
Nathan - we don't have morals police who go around beating women for not dressing a certain way. Well, maybe in Utah... I kid! - Tad Donaghe
@Tad, Utah or possibly my neighbors. : ) I think that's my new goal on FF - to insert my close-minded, evangelical neighborhood/community in every comment I make. - Carla Thompson
