From /Film: "Paramount has begun to distribute the first production photos from JJ Abrams‘ Star Trek around the web. Above is a first look at the crew on the Bridge of the USS Enterprise from MTV. Lindelof says that Kirk’s Black shirt is the Captain uniform, and that the red shirt crew member in the background is of no importance (ie Uhura probably replaces her after she dies early on). The bridge looks extremely cool, I can;t wait to see more of it. UGO has the first cast photo of the Enterprise crew (From left to right: Anton Yelchin as Chekov, Chris Pine as James T. Kirk, Simon Pegg as Lt. Montgomery Scott, Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy, John Cho as Sulu and Zoe Saldana as Uhura)."

Zachary Quinto looks exactly like Sylar in his Vulcan nerve pinch shot on the site. The bridge looks really flashy and the cast looks like the cast of Gossip Girl. Not really sure how I feel about it.
- Mark Trapp
Same actor: I haven't seen him do anything else, so he just might play Spock as Sylar. Spock has.... the hunger!
- Mark Trapp
Seriously impressive cast and casting. Disappointed Sylar couldn't keep his own eyebrows, he's only half the man without them. Who the fuck is Chris Pine?
- Toby Graham
They've succeed on casting... I just hope the writing is up to par.

So, I've never seen Monty Python. Any of them. I'm well versed in films, its just that from what I've seen these have never appealed to me. The problem is everyone I know (including some folks on FriendFeed) seem to think they are hilarious. Are these films really all they're cracked up to be?
omg. Start with 'Holy Grail' and get back to us in a few days...
- Bren
I think out of context they may be hard to find funny. But envision Different Strokes, and Benny Hill, Dirty Hairy, and Hart to Hart on different channels. Then you get these guys asking "what's the velocity of an African swallow?" "Laden, or unladen?" "Unladen."
- anna sauce
In a lot of ways they are everything they're cracked up to be - and sometimes more. While a lot of the jokes, skits and dialog seem very non-sequitor, they're often tied into a bunch of extra references that they take for granted that their audience will either get (or, if they don't, the Python guys didn't really care). My favorite - the abrupt, plot-less end of "Holy Grail" -- just like one of the original Aurthurian poems (the author died).
- Jennifer Dittrich
Well, first you should know that Monty Python isn't a movie.. it's a comedy troupe that had British TV show called "Monty Python's Flying Circus" in the early 70s. There are similar, more contemporary troupes like "The Kids in the Hall" and even "Mad TV." You are probably thinking of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" which was their best-known movie. If you really want a concentrated portion of their humor, rent a season of "Flying Circus".. that will get you in the mood for one of their movies.
- Phil Glockner
If you aren't quite there yet, you can start with more mainstream movies penned by John Cleese.. watch "A Fish Called Wanda" or even "Fierce Creatures". Or, rent a season of "Faulty Towers" -- that is pure Cleese. Once you 'get' Cleese, you will understand about 80% of Monty Python's stuff.
- Phil Glockner
yes and no (I personally enjoy them but I haven't memorized them so i can walk around quoting them like passages from A Midsummer Night's Dream) - they are a bit like Wes Anderson movies (which i strongly dislike): some people love 'em, some people hate 'em
- Marco(aureliusmaximus)
it's just sketch comedy, done with lots of non sequiter segues and trippy animations. Oh, and there's a high level of comedic genius involved as well, so that doesn't hurt the quality level at all.
- Pete D
Aaron - My nipples explode with delight! (it's an in-joke, you will get it after you watch Flying Circus for a while)
- Phil Glockner
So I'm on this road trip with my sis & her husband, and he and I start quoting Monty Python and, honestly, it jsut doesn't stop. It got us through about 3 states. SOO FUNNY (for us, maybe not anyone else)
- anna sauce
Yes, they are that funny. Check out Holy Grail first; it's the best of the Python films.
- Jeremy Brooks
It's a 'Mr. Death' or something. He's come about the reaping? I don't think we need any at the moment.
- mikepk
The Grim Reaper skit in meaning of life is one of my favorites for some reason. "Shut up! Shut up, you American. You always talk, you Americans. You talk and you talk and say 'let me tell you something' and 'I just wanna say this'. Well, you're dead now, so shut up!"
- mikepk
My friend wanted me to do silly walk with him at graduation. That is pretty funny.
- anna sauce
Get a Fawlty Towers box set from Amazon (Cleese only made 12 episodes). And tell us what you think.
- Roberto Bonini
Netflix or somehow RENT the TV shows first. Like a tree, the TRUNK is Flying Circus...the rest of it springs from that...it gives you context for the movies that you'll also need to see...then maybe you can hit some of the videos of the live shows and even Faulty Towers. But watch the Flying Circus TV Shows IN ORDER! (towards the end of its run, Cleese leaves...and that changed the show) That's how I would go about beginning the journey that is Python... Good Luck....
- Live4Emma (L4S)
Firefly...a sci-fi show where you actually don't hear anything in space...what a concept! Let's make a sci-fi show MORE real, instead of less! Joss Whedon, you are a frickin' genius and a true auteur.
Best canceled show ever. "You can't take the sky from me!"
- Josh Haley
The real genius of Firefly is that (for the most part, anyway), they never forgot that the show wasn't about the tech and are about the people. Mal never needed to reverse the neutron flow because it turns out that neutron flows don't make good stories.
- James (@willia4)
Yeah Firefly was awesome. Don't understand the rationale for cancelling awesome.
- Mo Kargas
The first time I watched Firefly and saw that there were no sounds in space, I was utterly hooked. Brilliant show. I have memorized most of the episodes from watching them so many times.
- Joey Gibson
What do you mean there's no sound in space? :-D
-
Anime Law of Physics #3: In space, loud sounds, like explosions, are even louder because there is no air to get in the way.
- xero
Actually this was my biggest disappointment when BSG came on the air. I still cringe a little at the sound FX in the space battles there.
- Eric P
And come to think of it, I remember one of the commentary tracks for one of the Star Treks, they were talking about this. They said they *knew* there was no sound in space - but it was boring as hell without the sound effects. if you think about the original series, that kind of makes sense - it would be hard to build tension otherwise with just a model enterprise hanging there.
- Eric P
You can make up for the lack of sound effects in a space movie by overlaying a musical score that paces well and sometimes seems like sound effects.
- xero
I discovered this show just about a year ago ... and still haven't finished watching the series. I don't want it to end! *cry*
- tj hanton
Joss Whedon figured out the drama bit when shooting with quiet space. Cutting in and out fairly quickly between interiors where you would hear something and space shots where you wouldn't.

Crap. I'm pulling for you, Pandora!! I can't imagine re-bookmarking all of those songs and artists someplace else. The time it took to build up the small-ish library I already have... Oh, the thought of it. :-(
- Lisa | #TeamMonique
I'm trying to stop hyperventilating at the thought of losing Pandora. WTF? "SoundExchange, the organization that represents performers and record companies, said it supports the higher royalties for Internet radio because musicians deserve a bigger cut of Internet radio profits."
- Jeanine W.
I wasn't aware of the different royalty rates. Not sure if Pandora is posturing. If Pandora shuts down, then Universal will win, since last.fm will become de facto standard.
- Ontario Emperor
from fftogo
Brian, I totally agree with you but it's not stupidity that drives Sound Exchange it's greed. Obviously the relative success of Pandora to attract a large audience spells dollar signs for a music industry that is seeing terrestrial radio die a slow death and CD sales plummet.
- Jennifer Van Grove
"As for Pandora, its royalty fees this year will amount to 70 percent of its projected revenue of $25 million, Westergren said, a level that could doom it and other Web radio outfits." - yuck.... Now imaging if the revenue could be split directly between Pandora and the artists....
- Tim Hoeck
I've bought a TON of music based on what I heard on Pandora, music that I would have never known about (and thus never purchased) without Pandora. I can't believe how shortsighted the music industry is.
- David Worrell
Greed and stupidity both. Indeed. I'm also bothered by the fact that the person trying to broker the deal is the "Congressman from Hollywood", the media companies' best friend, Howard Berman
- Didi Chanoch
Yeah, I too have found new music to buy based on Pandora. They shouldn't be paying anywhere near what broadcasters pay per song. Think about it, Pandora sends songs to individual customers. Broadcasters send songs to hundreds of thousands to millions of customers at once. Why is Pandora being forced to pay way more than broadcasters? It doesn't make sense. It is sheer stupidity for the content owners to do this to internet radio as it's probably one of the few bright spots for music right now.
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
This is sad. Pandora is such a great idea and the music industry is going to kill it. These assholes just don't get it. I like Pandora because I can find artists I never heard of - something you'll never be able to do with traditional radio. The music industry is once again shooting itself in the foot.
- PC Easy
from twhirl
I think it was apparent, but how do you stop a rabid dog? Too many people are trying to be reasonable with BigMusic instead of regulating them into the ground. It's a shame most corporations can't just be happy to be making a healthy profit--they scream the minute they find they aren't getting every thin dime they could possibly get. They're not like sharks. Sharks die.
- thepete
Also, I've heard all sorts of absurd rumors about that Sound Exchange group, too--like they collect royalties on *all* music, even if the music is from an independent artist--so if you're the musician, you have to sign with them to get your money. Anyone know if this is this true?
- thepete
Pandora is the best. :'( They've been saying this is a big problem for some time now. I really don't think it's posturing.
- Tanath
I've been a huge fan of Pandora since it started, I've bought a great deal of music because of Pandora, I use Pandora to organize much of my music, and I am going to be extremely angry if some Old Media ignoramuses who don't understand new technologies manage to force Pandora's shutdown. (Yet again, I am also taking note that cloud computing is highly unstable and unreliable. Mediamax went under. Now Pandora?)
- Sean McBride
What can be done to help... I can't imagine music without Pandora - it's how I discover new bands.
- Vince DeGeorge
nooo! They can't do this! My job already blocked my Muxtape access today, too.
- Kamilah Reed (K. Gill)
The go to guy on all things internet radio is my pal Kurt Hanson. If you are interested in the real behind the scenes stuff on internet radio check out his online newsletter. http://bit.ly/PvMED

@favorited first time i watch it, i like the special FX, but when i was watching this movie second time, i think what a boring thing they released at all. it's just for spending time, once.
- ideali
I haven't seen either movie, the second was straight to DVD right? Isn't it part of a trilogy?
- Joe Dawson
the second was released in theatres, at least in Russia. And there is the Twilight watch book, so it might become a trilogy. and we all hope it won't
- Peter Fedin
Take my love, take my land, take me where I cannot stand . . . I don't care, 'cuz I'm still free, you can't take the sky from me . . .
- Steve Spalding
I just rented the DVDs, couldn't be more excited.
- Steve Spalding
I can only hope that Joss decides to make another movie, as the rumors say he might.
- Steve Spalding
Watch the special features on the DVDs where Joss talks about writing the theme song. He did the whole song himself, and it's fantastic. :)
- Nathaniel Payne
Fantastic show. Great characters, great stories, great humor. Wish there was more than only 1 season and 1 movie.
- Tim Chemacki
If Firefly started this month, would it be a web-iTunes-Hulu series like Dr. Horrible?
- Bill Sodeman
@Timothy yea, I wouldn't. There is a cult following but probably not enough to justify it.
- Steve Spalding
Thanks for making me sad. Now I want to go watch this again.
- Jordan Hofker
I can't remember the full back story on this, but wasn't there something about the TV show was a consolation for not making the movie (that they ended up making anyway, "Serenity")? I don't know that the story, as Whedon would tell it, was made to be serialized. I'm probably talking out of my hat, tho.
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
Joss Whedon is brilliant. I love the Firefly series and Serenity. If it wasn't for the browncoats Serenity would never have come about. I was sad when it was over. I wrote a brief post about it on my MySpace page back in 2006: http://is.gd/1kqK
- Miiko Mentz
Also, if you're a Joss Whedon fan like me, check out Dr. Horrible on Hulu. He did that during the writer's strike.
- Miiko Mentz
From Gizmodo: "Well, this is just about the most amazing thing I've ever seen. It's a lightning bolt that's shooting down from the sky, shot in slow motion. I'm not sure exactly how fast this camera is, but it's got to be shooting at a speed faster than the Casio EX-F1 can shoot at, at least at a resolution this high." Audiophiles: I have a pair of Etymotic ER6i headphones that are on their last legs and need a new pair. Love them so current default is to get a new pair of the same headphones but was curious if you have apair that you love - want to keep it under $100
It's tough to stay under $100, but I like my Shure SE210's. They list for $179, but a quick Google Product search shows a few e-tailers selling for $117 to $130. Most folks are selling them for $150.
- Kevin C. Tofel
I'm a big fan of the sennheiser cx300's. not noise canceling, but used them while cutting the grass and still heard things i've not heard with other headphones. http://tinyurl.com/6kxpg7 you can grab them at almost half price
- Kyle A Koch
to be fair, i do love the vmoda's too, as they have a mic and inline button for answering from my iphone. if you have an iphone, i'd possibly go with those
- Kyle A Koch
thanks for the suggestions - the ER6i's provide great sound but I know there are a number of other great headphones out there
