funny; I'm at 140conf (all about Twitter) with a room filled with people staring at the fail whale at Twitter.com.. :-) (via @Boris)
Haha. - Kol Tregaskes
Oh the irony - LANjackal
I can't even connect to Twitter.com here, right now, let alone see the Whale. :( - Tyson Key
haha! - Dee S.
you are in nyc zee? - Allen Stern
unfortunately not Allen - @Boris managed to nab this event... (there's the @boris at the end there) - Zee.
LOL..unfortunatly some of us keep hitting the refresh button on the browser to check..lol - Linda Zuidema
aah i would meet boris if he is interested :) - Allen Stern
pics or it never happened ; ) - LouCypher

Glad / Sad to see confirmation that Twitter is not working just now. - Jim Spencer
so if twitter is down does the 140conf actually exist ? - Nik Butler
nik - i'd like to think the conference doesn't exist in any regard - Allen Stern
Twitter’s downtime during #140conf should’ve moved some to try Identi.ca rather than have heart attacks - A Mitchell

Google Squared, the ‘Wolfram Alpha killer’ is LIVE! Our initial thoughts. - http://thenextweb.com/2009...
Google Squared, the ‘Wolfram Alpha killer’ is LIVE! Our initial thoughts.
its more like tabulation of pages - Abhishek Tiwari
I agree with @Bryan. Not the same as WolframAlpha, more like AskJeeves - John Apps
not the same as wolfram but usefull - lots of info gained from wiki posts - Matt Stevens
Not very useful IMO. For example, your planet query works, but searching for BMWs lists all car brands, which is nonsense. I'll stick with Alpha, where at least the results bear some relation to the input. Total miss here by Google. - LANjackal
Google Squared is nothing like alpha, But it's gameable! look up "Programming Languages" and add PowerShell -- it turns out that according to Google squared, PowerShell influenced C#, DCL, ksh, Perl, Ruby/LISP, CL, SQL, COMMAND.COM/ cmd.exe, Tcl ... and unlike other languages which have locations such as "Newark, NJ" "Paris" and "Australia" ... PowerShell is located in \Scripts\old\ - Joel Bennett
But it does not answer the question: "How many beans make 5?". Bing does, amazingly enough - John Apps
Looks nice. It partly does what Wolfram Alpha but it's a long way off. Certainly something I use though. - Kol Tregaskes
It's not a Wolfram Alpha killer at all. - Kol Tregaskes
@Kol: My thoughts exactly. - LANjackal
So when do you think that universities are going to say not to use both of these services? - CW™
The problem with Wolfram Alpha is that it doesn't have much in the way of popular culture references like Google has. Once it does it will be amazing and possible replace Google for me (but that's a long way off). Google Squared is just putting search results into a simple table. A useful feature, for sure, but is very different to Wolfram Alpha. - Kol Tregaskes
Wow this makes it easier to get a list of things... http://www.google.com/squared... - CW™
Something really surprising (for me) when I played a bit with Google squared today, is that I found spam on some results¿? It was like the last place I was expecting to see spam. - Josue Santos Martin
No it's not Wolfram Alpha, but oh, my, god. LANJackal, try searching for "bmw models" instead. That's a good starting point. - Kamilah Gill
What I like about google squared is that it allows to add column of info of your choice. It is in developing phase but I hope Google does not keep it buried under other projects. - ashish
Funny that it took Wolfram Alpha and MS Bing to make google improve their "question" and "topic" handling... No competition had made them slack, imo - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
I don't understand people defending it. Their data is so scrambled, you could never trust it. I mean, search for the Secretary of State http://www.google.com/squared... ... and look at the descriptions of these PEOPLE. Half of them aren't even in the ballpark. - Joel Bennett
If expand that search, get Hillary Clinton on there, and then add the "President" column ... apparently Hillary Clinton is serving as Secretary of State under president Patrick Leahy. :-D - Joel Bennett
Joel, it's Labs, which is like beta. I don't expect it to be perfectly accurate yet. I like it as an organizational tool. I don't want to bash it too much because I don't want them to give up on it and then have it disappear entirely. - Kamilah Gill

Is there a driver detector out there that i can use to find out which sound driver to get for a computer? xp/vista
SIW from http://www.gtopala.com/ will tell you everything you'd want to know. - Greg Guitarbuster
Wouldn't it be nice if the OS could do a better job at this? Hello? Is anyone listening? - Joel Bennett
I know right Joel thanks Greg - Gordon Swaby
Given the wide variety of hardware out there from a zillion manufacturers, including knockoffs and rebrands, Windows actually does a pretty good job. What we need is for just one hardware manufacturer to develop a platform driven by their tight grip on the hardware and the OS that runs on it... hmmmm. - abacab
I like to use Belarc Advisor ( http://www.belarc.com/free_do...). It's got my butt out of a jam many times. It's lite, fast, and easy to use. - Lestat
Tried SIW worked wonderul:) thanks people - Gordon Swaby

Best part: you could see any kind of app on this, it's not sharing a closed application market with a cell phone (like the iPod touch and the iPhone), so you won't have someone denying an app if it isn't in the best interest of the company or wireless provider. - Shawn Farner
Looks very tempting. I've got a port of android running on my N800 which works pretty well, apart from the on-screen keyboard which is so buggy it's unusable (not sure if that's just because of the port). Fingers cross for a sub £200 price in the UK. - Russ
Resistive touchscreen = FAIL. And touchscreen != "tablet." - Karim
Ok then, so what would you have headlined it Karim? - Mona Nomura from IM

It's a prototype, Karim :-P You're not going to find this in the store tomorrow. Some companies go to these shows with a video and a device that doesn't even work. - Shawn Farner
I see your point though. "Android tablet $149" much better linkbait :-D - Karim
;) And I'm glad I asked for you to re-title. You never fail to crack me up. Shawn - have you noticed a lot of companies are making their products available right away? That sort of "demo" or "prototype will be available JUST in time for Christmas!" mentality is evolving, imho. - Mona Nomura from IM

Should big brands fear or revere the mommybloggers? - http://blogs.zdnet.com/feeds...
"Judge for yourself, but I thought it was kind of funny. Then again I am not a mother and also, after much competitive improv training, I’ve learned to find humor in most anything. That said, I decided to check with my reality touchstone and best friend, who happens to be a single mother of three outside of Birmingham, Alabama. Her reaction?" - Daniel J. Pritchett
Good for these mommy bloggers...Happy that their voice was heard. However, they should take care not to make it a habit in fear of being tagged as "complaining mommy bloggers". - John-David Lusan from fftogo

however, Obama is NUTS if he gives one penny to failed automakers like GM. those companies NEED TO FAIL. give grants to Tesla!
agreed. - Carlos Ayala
Tesla won't get grants until they can show they already a workable plan for creating a 20k electric car. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
It'd be a great strategy to let tons of his constituents lose their jobs, right? - J T. Ramsay
If they fail, it would almost destroy the automotive industry in the U.S. The economy would be in much worse shape than it is now. - pcnerd37
I tend to agree, but I'm worried about the short and mid term economic damage it could cause. Is there such a thing as letting them fail gracefully? - Matt Pfefferle
Unfortunately I think that a collapse of the big three would be too sudden a shock to the system at a time when we can ill afford it - a million jobs lost would have a ripple effect that makes an already bad situation that much worse. The government shouldn't let that happen, but at the same time these companies need to be punished - I'd like to see a revival of anti-trust enforcement. Break the big three up into the medium thirty. Then the failure of any one won't matter nearly as much in the future. - Eric P
It's a tough call. The reprocussions of an allowed failure are much deeper than you may realize. When they collapse, they take entire associated industries with them—thousands upon thousands of jobs on a global scale. I'm not fore rewarding bad business practices like the auto industry big wigs any more than I wanted to see Wall St. scumbags and EvilCo Banks get billions to go on more... more... - Bob M. Montgomery from twhirl

Free market principles have failed. The bailout will happen. - Victor Ganata

And when did it become the job of the federal government to bailout industries or companies? It's all absolute nonsense. - ComicList
Interesting statements, yet the Fed. Gov't gave the auto makers a bailout about 3 or 4 years ago and no one batted an eye then. - Admiral Anika
Obama will give them money for four reasons. 1. He doesn't want to be the president who lost the auto industry. 2. He owes the unions 3. He believes "smart" people like him can centrally plan the economy. 4. He truly believes govt. bailouts can save the economy - Steve Olson
I agree. However, I think he needs to do it to save the workers. Afterwards, he needs to bust some Corp and union ass. Force them to join the next century. - Charlie Wilson
Part of the problem is Tesla doesn't provide vehicles to the military as GM does. It would take years to replace them. - Steve Gillette from twhirl
Unions kinda did join the 21st C. by being beaten to a pulp in the 20th. Maybe it's time for unions to, um, fight back already? - J T. Ramsay
We should see it as opportunity. The money should have strings to force a greener industry and less dependency on carbon-based fuels. - Phil Boiarski
One of the prerequisites being floated in order to get a bailout from taxpayers is a major shakeup in management at GM. Perhaps reorganizing the top would create a much better company worthy of the bailout dollars? - Ryan Twomey
I would rather see our bankruptcy laws be adjusted for the current financial environment than have the federal government (politicians!) try to fix what may not be fixable with a bailout, strings attached or not. - scott anderson
I agree Jason, But PLEASE keep the Corvette alive! Maybe Tesla could buy the Corvette division and put an electric drivetrain in it. I'm too fat to fit in a Tesla if it is based on a Lotus Elise. - Tokyo Dan from twhirl

I actually that idea of splitting the company up into its natural divisions. That strategy could be beneficial all around, boosting competition and innovation, reducing the effect of a failure by a small producer on the economy as a whole and ultimately providing better vehicles. Wonder if this sort of idea is anywhere near the table. - Bob M. Montgomery
letting 'em fail is not a solution at the moment. due to the lack of any kind of regulation in US industry and economy, you people of US created this very crisis cooperatively. now you have to cure that cancer without an amputation and make sure to get appropriate precautions to ensure it's not happening again soon... letting your ridiculously poor managed companies fail means giving them away to Chinese, Russian and Arabian dollar billionaires for free. do you really want this? - Berk D. Demir
that and you'll be able to sell your corvette for a pretty penny if you garage it for the next 50 years - Paul Stamatiou
i want my change to happen in 4 years: if they bail out auto-industry - i expect in 4 years auto-industry too: 90% of there fleet be non-gas, 90% of overseas work force back into USA = if not pay gov back money! - shayne catrett
Although... the general population can buy Chevy, Buick, Pontiac and Olds - not many can spring for a Tesla or many other 100K+ autos. Not that I care, personally - I don't like GM... I'm a Dodge fan. LoL - Ian Maffett
@ Shayne Well said. History shows (British Leyland) that mere subsidies are harmful. We should demand goals and targets, dates and benchmarks. - Phil Boiarski
@Phil: the govt. has done this with many things. most of those goals, targets, dates, and benchmarks are worthless for the most part. - Aaron Eaton
If they fail millions could loose their jobs. In places like Michigan there is no other industry for those workers to go to. - Matt Farina
@ Aaron, I guess it irks me that we heard none of this when spending 4 times as much on AIG, Wall Street Millionaires. Save the guys who helped sell Mortgage Backed Secuirties and got big bonuses for doing it. We can throw millions of Joe Sixpack out on the street but God foribid Godon Gekko not get his share. - Phil Boiarski
Jason, Tesla cars are way too expensive. I understand that you are in love with them, but that's because you can afford one. Give grants to car companies that want to promote 'green-friendly' cars and can afford to give us cheaper options. - Fleagle
The whole Eco/GreenOP is a scam since 70s. Companies like TeslaM [paypal perp! ] and Fisker/Quantum Technologies [who recently started to oppose TesM] only have a chance, if cybersheeple would confront radically WorldMedia on the use of Directed Energy Weapons vs. 9/11 TwinTowers. Jobless claims higher than expected - Nov. 6, 2008 - http://money.cnn.com/2008...
"Job cuts On Wednesday, a private outplacement firm reported that last month had the highest number of pink slips handed out since January 2004. The job cut announcements soared to 112,884, up 19% from September's 95,094 cuts, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. Separately, payroll manager ADP said the private sector lost a seasonally adjusted 157,000 jobs last month - more than six times September's decrease and the largest drop since December 2001. The Department of Labor's monthly unemployment report due Friday is expected to show that 200,000 jobs were lost in October and that the unemployment rate grew to 6.3% from 6.1% a month earlier." - Thomas Hawk from Bookmarklet
This is not good. FF needs a 'Don't Like' button. I would expect to see more retail job cuts shortly after the holidays. - Jeff P. Henderson
keep your eye on tomorrow's jobless number. Market is anticipating 200,000. It could be a lot worse though based on anecdotal reports of job losses. - Thomas Hawk
I've been cutting back on a lot of unnecessary expenses the past couple of months. it's too the point where if i don't "need" it, I don't keep it. those regular monthly charges can really add up. - Jason Shultz from twhirl
Jason, I suspect you are like a lot of people out there. I canceled my gym. Striped my phone service down to the minimum (no caller ID). Cancelled my EVDO account. Started bringing my lunch to work instead of buying it. And made lots of other cuts as well. Monday will mark the third week straight that I've had the same single $20 bill in my wallet. - Thomas Hawk
I was shooting around Union Square yesterday afternoon. The stores seemed empty. Especially the high end luxury goods stores. They just opened up a Prada store in Union Square and as pretty as it looks from the outside there didn't seem to be a single soul in inside. I think these luxury good stores will be some of the first to close. - Thomas Hawk
I can see what you are saying about luxury brands, but I am reminded of something said by Frank Mckinney, the real estate developer. He said there will always be a market for starter homes and the over $100,000,000 homes. The rich tend to weather things a bit better than the middle, and the bottom rarely changes as well. So the luxury brands may not suffer too bad, at least not at first. But that is just a guess. - Eban Crawford
Eban, I think fashion actually changes in our society this time around. I think people are more ready to embrace a society not based on needless consumption. I suspect that the luxury brands actually lose quite a bit of their cache and even become unfashionable. I think marketers are at this very moment looking at how to redefine "luxury." I've been hired to shoot photos as part of a market research project sharing with marketers what I see as a "luxury" to me. - Thomas Hawk
I think luxury is being redefined in our culture and won't necessarily be associated with "more expensive" going forward. - Thomas Hawk
I can see your point and do see the shift you mention. I can see where this is a positive as long as needless consumption does not start to equate with excessive loss of choice in the marketplace. I also don't mean this in a personal sense as I tend to enjoy the purchasing power that lower cost alternatives affords me. Luxury to me is a great afternoon with my wife, and "crazy great" gadgets. ;-) - Eban Crawford
I don't see it. Luxury is always about non-essential pleasure or comfort ... You always find _more_ things defined as luxuries when the economy is down, but that is *based* on the fact that they're non-essential ... and cost money. - Joel Bennett

If this is true, well then awesome. I like the design of that Nano, seems like you'd then hold your Nano horizontally much like the iPhone or iPod Touch to watch videos. New Microblogging Site Rejaw is Not a Twitter Killer - http://www.mediadeluge.com/post...
I'm tired of all these Twitter copies. Pownce. Plurk. Identi.ca. Now Rejaw. Aren't you? How many more chat room, er, live web technologies do we need? Interesting that Meebo has 10x more users and is never mentioned in comparisons here. - Robert Scoble
How many new clothing styles do we need? Fashions change every year because, well, I've never quite figured that one out :-) - Todd Hoff
I think there's room for a handful of these sites. I don't see one uber dominant player that is all things to all people. Just like social networking sites or IM clients, that fill the need of a certain demographic, I see several twitter clones populated with like people. For example, plurk might serve the Myspace crowd. Had Twitter not stumbled so badly for so long, it might have secured a hammerlock on the space, but given its troubles, people want alternatives. - Christian Anderson
I think there will be more before there are fewer. What is interesting to me is watching to see who wins dominance and how the space gets defined. You mention Meebo, which is really thought of as a Facebook competitor. Facebook too has Twitter-like functionality and 140x the users, but I don't think of them as chat room / live web tech. - Christian Anderson
It does seem to be a bit of overkill when the new services are not all that different and don't offer that much more than current services. I think of all the services Pownce has the best feature set (allows you to be as simple as Twitter or a bit more complex if you need to be) but I think their private beta went too long and they were never able to attract a decent user base. - Gregory Pittman from twhirl
It's not that there's not room for them, it's just that we can't seriously try them all. A new player would need to do mega-marketing to get my attention, or else do really well with a social media campaign. It's easy to try the "first" of something, but being the 3rd of 4th is a serious disadvantage. - Jason Kintzler
It has to be *really* shiny to get my attention at this point. I'm in web service overload. - Chris Baskind
Christian - arguably, there will be one uber player. The network effects of these services are so important. So the one that emerges with the most people gets into a virtuous cycle. You want the network, you join where the network is. Which increases the number of connections on the network. - Hutch Carpenter
Twitter was the first for me, i'm not changing just to keep up on some new "trend" - orionstarr
Jason: i disagree -- especially with this crowd. we're a fickle bunch and move on and off shiny new web toys very quickly. All one of these sites needs is for a few of the whale connectors to commit to them and actually leave Twitter. I'm not advocating that, but think Twitter is in a very precarious leadership position. - Christian Anderson
Each of these clones does seem to have a different flavor. Where Rejaw excels is in near real-time chatting. It's much more like IM when you participate in a hot topic. Conversations on Rejaw tend to swirl around single topics then move on. It's by design - Rejaw locks conversations that have no new posts after three days. If Twitter did not exist, and have such a huge user base, I think Rejaw would be a strong contender. - Leo Laporte
Hutch: i agree there will likely be one uber player for specific demos because of the network effects. Tech early-adopters will likely congregate on one (while trying others). Disagree though that the one uber player will be the same across demographics. I can see Plurk securing a large following and a leadership position with MySpacers, Rejaw could do the same with photographers because it handles pix and video well, etc. - Christian Anderson
Christian- That's true. I forget that I'm speaking for myself and not the critics in the crowd. I totally agree about the Plurk/MySpace connection - I've been thinking that also, much more "chummy" where twitter seems more grown-up- is that possible? - twitter is grown-up? - Jason Kintzler
No, but it's been fun :) - Charlie Anzman
uber FriendFeedstress Mona N ... funny :) - Charlie Anzman
Rejaw seems like a credible player. The challenge, as always, will be reaching critical pass. My take: http://bit.ly/rejaw - Dion Hinchcliffe
*yawn* Back to FF and Twitter. - Nate Pilling from twhirl
Always good to us. Healthy competition is good for the market, is good for innovation. Let them create more and more. This is the reason that we use FriendFeed for example, pull everything to one place. :-) - Tiago Vieira
Next week, something newer and shinier will come out and we'll stop talking about Rejaw, just like we stopped talking about Plurk. - Morton Fox
Morton: and Kwippy, and identica, and Utterz, ad infinitum. - Mark Trapp
Mark: We talked about Kwippy? I think I missed that. - Morton Fox
Morton: for like an hour. There's a cadre of FriendFeeders on it. It's a shame, because it has non-silly XMPP support. The web interface isn't all that great, though. - Mark Trapp
Dion: what? no link love? :) Morton, agree, next week we'll move on and talk about what's next. that is what is great about this group -- the discovery. meanwhile, plurk and others are growing nicely. If Plurk continues to grow like it is, you can bet we'll be talking about them again. - Christian Anderson
I'm sticking with Twitter until the end. The rest of them can screw themselves. Got better things to do than chase followers on every microblog that comes along. - David Risley
The problem I see with all of them is technical... they've re-created the technical problems that plague Twitter. If they ever get popular, they'll have the same issues (or worse, without $20 million to try to fix them) - Jason Carreira
Jason: I pinged Danny Burkes – Architect at Rejaw about scalability. Let's see what he says. - Christian Anderson
This page mentions Rails a lot: http://rejaw.com/help/about - Jason Carreira
why do we need rejaw? it's too much like twitter, pownce, identi.ca, etc. What can they possibly add to the space? - David Ward
There's a lot to be added to the space, it's just that you have to meet the baseline, and meet it better than the pre-existing solutions, before you can move on to the new stuff. - Jason Carreira
No, profit has no place in Web 2.0 ;) - Jason Carreira
just like there is not "one" digital camera or "one" ipod to fit all peoples like and dislikes . I think social media microblogs will continue to develop microblogging sites that borrow bits and bites from each particular model .Competition is healthy . - johnpiercy
"The phenomenal success of Twitter has shown us that we were missing a communication medium" -- Dan York and that's why the services are popping up like, um, weasels. But the winner will be the one that's based on standards, and allows you to run it on your own site a la blog software. - Brian Hendrickson
@Brian, no it won't be, because that would lose a lot of the advantage. - Jason Carreira
@Jason I didn't reply to your question about Twittervision or other services atop a federated network, but any site in the network could easily report its activity to one or more hosts. The default install would report to a search service. Installing additional "apps" on a site would add to the list of services it connects to. If a friend installs the same app then we see each other through that apps' centralized server. Other apps could work site-to-site, and all of this is available now with OAuth. - Brian Hendrickson
...and you're back to the bottlenecks as hundreds or thousands of separate services all try to send a constant stream to a central aggregator... - Jason Carreira
then I uninstall that app - Brian Hendrickson
..and then you get none of the aggregate effects of a large userbase... see how this goes around in circles until someone builds a scalable piece of software, in which case why federate in the first place? - Jason Carreira
@Jason yeah we should keep doing this all day! I got a fresh cup-o-joe. Now I'll say my part again. Seriously, though, I do believe that your architecture is a "correct" twitter, and that you understand the problem better than I do. Can you imagine what it was like, after 8 weeks of work, to have my codebase talk to evan's codebase? Jesse said your architecture should capitalize on this standard and I was thinking the same thing. low end: omb, middle: laconi.ca high: carreiraware.com $20M/server - Brian Hendrickson
See, but I think a federated service REDUCES THE VALUE... The value increases exponentially with the number of users on one service (i.e. the network effect). - Jason Carreira
Do you really think it can "take off" if people can not put it on their own server? It sounds like your marketing angle is "you won't see the fail whale here" but that might not be enough to supplant. I'm guessing that Rejaw has a better back-end than twitter by far so it will be interesting to see. But being able to have your 'friends' in your own PostgreSQL db, that's cool. Also, their profiles auto-update from their home server so it's a live address book. - Brian Hendrickson
I'm guessing from the profiles of the people on Rejaw talking about Rails that they have a similar back-end, driven by a database (probably MySQL) and having the same scaling problems when loads get heavy. Having a technically better and more scalable micro-blogging platform is just the price of entry to the space, for me. I've got several big ideas I want to add after I get that far, one of which I think will be huge when we get there. - Jason Carreira
I'm still working on everything it takes to put up a reliable service, though... I'm an experienced software guy, but a first time entrepreneur and no good prior contacts in the VC / Angel funding world. We'll see how it goes. - Jason Carreira
OK, I'll stop buggin' you. But I would love to see you create an interface on your system for the omb spec. Regarding my own effort, the schema is well-normalized, you can have multiple OpenIDs per user, each message is stored only 1 time in the db no matter how many people receive it, each message gets transmitted to a given host only 1 time, the download is 600k, you could run it on an iPhone or any tiny device that can pump a php4 binary. It's totally fun. Cheers. - Brian Hendrickson
Lets not forget with identi.ca you can run your own. - Matthew

yup, it looks better here too. Plus there is now "update all" in the app store. - Robert Scoble

That's why I only follow people I trust. (EDIT) I should add...and only follow if I can verify a person is really them. That's why I like the idea of http://claimid.com/. (EDIT #2) It would help if they DIDN'T black-out the User ID. How is anyone supposed to know if they're already following this account? And the last line is a little misleading. However, I'm pretty sure they were referring specifically to the worm the tweeted link sent people to. - WazNeeni

"Microscheduling" - http://www.mixin.com Useful or is it just going a little bit too far?

I wish there was a new tab in FriendFeed: "close friends." Instead, I'm opening a new FriendFeed account to see what life is like when you only have a few friends.

Agree with Jeff... I'd like a tab with tech friends and non-tech friends, meat-space friends, work friends, amusing friends, etc. So I could have different "flavors" of FriendFeed depending on my mood. - Lindsay

Could creating a room to put your 'real' friends be an option? - Michael
I agree with Jeff. Moreover to be able to define groups/tabs like "close friends," "colleauges," etc., and give each group a priority in terms of displaying contents and have FF somehow displaying according to priority of those groups/tabs. - Hayk H.
I'm using FriendFeed Filters: Friends & Groups (http://ffapps.com/filters/) exactly for the "close friends" purpose and it's all right. In my case, one wish saved :) - Dani Radu

I'd like "favorite users" in different tabs. And the different groups. Also like to have a clipboard tab, where "clipped" users/articles stay (and I can follow them) and are removed from the "friends" tab (temporarily). - Mitchell Tsai
i also think that there is enough space for additional (custom) tabs here - Dieter Schwarz
I would definitely like to see this feature added! I like Lindsay's suggestion to have several tabs with groups of friends. - Jeff P. Henderson
I've been wanting friend groups for a while, just so I can filter things quicker. - xero
Great idea, group friends and/or related tabs. An idea I've had for a while was "Friend Weight" where as a friend is slower to leave the front page or be buried down. Who knows what's up FriendFeed's sleeves? - Colby Olson
Friendfeed should simply let you privately rate all relationships on a 1 to 10 scale. You could then filter FF by these numerical ratings. It would also be useful information for them to use when they come out with their "best of the day, week, month, etc." algorithm based on social metadata and personal relevancy. - Thomas Hawk
do you find that your friends list on twitter is different from friendfeed? at least for me, friendfeed has some of my closer friends and/or people who's content I follow everyday, whereas twitter has just about anyone. - Chris Salazar
If I tried that, I'd never see FriendFeed update as only two of my close friends use it and neither of them use it that much except to mainly comment. - Akiva Moskovitz
I've been dreaming of the same thing. I don't want to get rid of the "friend of" concept all together; I find lots of good stuff that way. But there are times i wish i could switch over to a subset of people quickly. Maybe two new tabs? "just friends" and "close friends" ? - Jeff (the メガマクダジ of FF)
It would be great if : 1 - one could limite the update to connected people (and not receiving updates of friend of a friend - eventhough this info could be accessible somewhere), or may be I missed something here, 2 - create lists of friends (like family, work, techy which would be displayed as tabs) - Olivier

there could be an acquaintances tab? no? I would follow more people if I could filter it a little more, regardless of the system applied. id like a tab ,, "needsagirlfriend" - johnpiercy
The friend / close friend dynamic is one that no social networking/media site I've seen has quite ever gotten exactly right. If anyone can do it, I would bet on FF ! - Eric Berlin
FriendFeed needs an additional tab (as does Twitter, Identi.ca, and others) allowing you to show posts from only "favorited" friends. I am currently doing this with RSS, but IMO that's a hack. - Jesse Stay
Heh - just realized I was commenting the exact same thing you were saying in the post - need to read better. ;) Consider it a me too++ - Jesse Stay
I do not like the idea of "close friends" as defined by any application. A generic grouping mechanism is more helpful because you can create your "close friends" group, and you can create a "techies" group or whatever else you desire. I am actually surprised that FF does not have it already given that rooms have been around for a while. - Rob Diana
@Robert, why does it not surprise me that you went back to your real account? Good to see that you are experimenting though. - Rob Diana
I would rather have Close Friends that the current Subscriptions listing on the sidebar of my personal page - Mark Dykeman

Warning: your calendar is in danger with Apple’s Mobile Me - http://scobleizer.com/2008...
iDelete ...EPIC FAIL!! - Susan Beebe
When I picked up my iPhone this morning, the salesman was trying fairly hard to get me to sign up for MobileMe but I kept on pushing him off, saying that I wanted to mess with the trial a little more before I committed. Very, very glad I did that. - Akiva Moskovitz
I use MobileMe and so far, no issues. knock-on-wood - Rom Feria
Been using MobileMe since it was called iTools and free with very few issues ever. It keeps my contacts and my calendars and my mail settings synced between 3 Macs. - Adam Turetzky
Is there a known set of circumstances in which this occurs, or are the circumstances fairly random? - Ontario Emperor from fftogo
No reason, no idea why it happened? I understand it's bad news for you, and could be for others, but couldn't this be a random incident? Isn't it a little hasty to go telling everyone MobileMe is a disaster? - Tim Hoeck from NoiseRiver
Thanks Robert. Signed up for MobileMe, but have yet to investigate. Looks like you saved me the trouble! - Bill Sanders
Tim: lots of other people I trust are having troubles with it too. It could be a random incident, but I'd rather have my readers be very careful with this. I've never seen this behavior before. No idea why it happened and since it's taken me more than two hours of resynching with Google Calendar to try to get it back I'm not very likely to try it again. Uninstall. - Robert Scoble
Walt Mossberg says not to go for Mobile Me either. What is his headline? "Apple's Mobileme is far too flawed to be reliable.": http://ptech.allthingsd.com/2008072... - Robert Scoble
I gave MobileMe a rather rigorous testing for a week, and found it to be just one aggravating issue after the next. http://tinyurl.com/6lnzg6 if you care to read. - Evan Sims
Is this just an Outlook problem? Or can it affect iCal too? - John
John: I don't know. I'm using Mobile Me on a Windows Vista computer with Outlook 2007. - Robert Scoble
Thanks. I just backed up my iCal just in case. Apple needs to get their sh!t together. First iPhone 2.0 and then of course the MobileMe disaster. - John
Thank god, this is one of the few mishaps of MobileMe that didn't happen to me, yet. Woke up to deleted contacts on my iPhone one morning. Thank god, they were "only" deleted on the phone, so nothing was lost. But it just makes you remember: "When was the last backup?" - Holger Eilhard
I don't like to rant about Apple, but don't they test this stuff. what about 2.0 firmware for iPod touch and iPhones that is really unstable with the appstore? I know they can't test every config, but atleast try to work out the bugs. Everyday I here of another mobileMe disasters.. I'm happy I still have old treo, which is buggy too, but at least it won't automatically delete my contacts and appointments for me... - Sebastiaan van den Akker
I don't have my calendar on MobileMe, but I know it screwed up my address book. - Francine Hardaway
While there's probably a unique circumstance in which this happens, the fact it is possible at all is scary to say the least. - Sam Law
I have found that redundacy is a good thing. Which is why I keep more then one calendar. - Paul from twhirl
Are there any free and/or open source products which fulfill the same features as MobileMe? Preferably open source so anyone can just up and install as required. - Scott Jarkoff
Before making such proclamations, you might want to do a little homework. Did you even talk to MobileMe tech support? http://www.apple.com/support.... There might have been a simple fix had you checked. I've been using MobileMe since July 18th; I sync three Macs and my iPhone and haven't had any major issues. I'm adding an XP laptop next; I don't expect any problems with that either. - Albert Willis
Albert: a simple fix? Google Calendar has been going for six hours recreating my calendar so far. This was a problem with Outlook. I have 8,400+ calendar entries. It's only recreated 2,400 of them so far. Sigh. Macs don't even have Outlook so, of course you haven't had problems yet. Hope nothing bad happens on your XP machine. I'd back up just in case. At least my calendar will be back tomorrow cause I had a backup. - Robert Scoble
That is, there could have been something Apple could have done to restore your calendar entries, assuming you synced your calendars to MobileMe. That would have been worth a shot. Again, we don't know the culprit here, between Outlook, Vista, MobileMe and whatever else is installed on your machine. I've done enough tech support to know we don't have the complete story here. - Albert Willis
Albert: no, once the calendar entries were deleted, you needed to move them over from somewhere else. There was no way in hell I was going to let it touch my calendars anymore after that. I know Google Calendar will work. My trust in this is shot. - Robert Scoble
I know it's not as critical a failure as calendar but you should try the gallery...I struggled with using it and sharing it for a week before giving up and going back to flickr... - Kamath (नमः)
I didn't have any problems with calendars on MobileMe, but it decided one morning to delete all of my contacts bar three. That was the point at which I decided I'd move back to using Exchange, which Just Works on the iPhone, and (via Entourage) on my Mac. And amazingly, I had people trying to tell me it wasn't Apple's fault, despite it being Apple technology, running Apple software, on an Apple machine! - Ian Betteridge
people love to piss on apple these days, ain't that right? Exchange deletes calendars as well as google calendar. It just happens. Ask an exchange admin how much fun it is to run that b*tch ;) - muzo
muzo: I dare you to come up with any Fortune 1,000 CTO who says that Exchange deleted a calendar like this with a recent version of Exchange. - Robert Scoble
yeah, but from the user end it WORKS. get it? Exchange == most worthwhile product MS produces. Period. I'm going to bed. - Andrew Feinberg
Andrew: right. And anyway, Apple is the beneficiary of more free good PR than any other tech company around. - Robert Scoble
It's a version 1 Apple product - that means "early beta" in anyone else's language. - Andrew Garrett
With every post I get happier that I did not waste my $100 on mobile fail. - Bob Blunk
I'm incredibly sad to hear that this implementation is failing so badly. It's a utopian feature we all benefit from. If Robert ditches this and convinces other to, Apple will really miss out of good feedback from the community. Anyone found out if Apple responded to this major setback? - Mark Aitken
Not worth the very limited utility given the fact that it won't sync up with Google Calendar, either. I got MobileMe through my brother's family plan, and still had to buy Spanning Sync to do that. And I have to keep the intermediary computer on (my home iMac) because it doesn't sync OTA. There's got to be something better than this... - Jason Menayan
Had the initial trouble with MobleMe during the .Mac switch and have stopped using it - even though I paid good money for the service. On the flip side, I'm finding Live Mesh to be surprisingly more useful and it's a free "Tech Preview." Go figure. - Paul Dain
For those who would like to uninstall Movile Me: http://tinyurl.com/6q37oo Talks you through the process. - Paul
I had some initial problems with the service but it's quite stable for me, so far. - John Staton

Apple's Mobile Me just deleted all my Outlook calendar items. I'm getting them all back from my Google Calendar. Wild, what a crappy service. I told it to use Outlook to resolve all conflicts, too. Has this happened to anyone else? Makes me very scared to use it.
I have heard about this happening to multiple people. And the best part is that you pay $100/year for it.... - Peter Ghosh

was this on your iPhone or a computer? I had that with contacts.. after research found out to delete account from iPhone and re subscribe.. then it found them all again! Let me know how you get on.. - Tom de Grunwald from twhirl
Apple have got to do something about this. slowly, surely it's affecting loads of us. Not good. - Tom de Grunwald from twhirl
(holding his blackberry and treo tightly) - Andrew Feinberg
Tom: it was on Windows Vista. - Robert Scoble
This is why Exchange is the defacto standard for business communications. Apple needs to do better. And I'm sure they can. - Roberto Bonini
I was an iTools user back in the day. When that turned into .mac I paid the first year then I abandoned it. I was outraged - even then - that Apple was charging an arm and a leg for unreliable services available reliably elsewhere for free! - Nicholas Helke
@Roberto I haven't seen anything do mail + calendar + group scheduling better than exchange. Microsoft's problem is they insist that Outlook is a part of Office when they could spin off exchange/outlook/entourage/windows mobile into a separate company and do very interesting things. And I'm a die-hard Mac user, too. - Andrew Feinberg
WHOA!! EPIC FAIL.... damn! good thing you had synch up to Google..dang! iDelete! - Susan Beebe
This happened with .Mac as well. I used to sync my Entourage/Exchange calender with iCal across multiple machines using .Mac. One morning I woke up and my entire Entourage/Exchange calender was empty. Had to have IT restore it from backup - Tom Wentworth
Meh. I'm still using Exchange at this point. - l0ckergn0me
That 1% is getting bigger. Having lost all my contacts, without a backup, I can sympathise. A week away from returning MobileMe. - Tom Tubbs
I am using Google Calendar and soon Exchange on the big corp. network. - Susan Beebe
Perhaps I'm lucky. I don't use Mobile Me, Exchange or Outlook. Gmail does a grand job for my needs! - Ian May
thanks. i was debating it. now i know to stay away - Jeff (the メガマクダジ of FF)
Seems a bit harsh to go telling everyone to STOP using MobileMe, I use it through exchange and works fine. I did have an issue with the ical being corrupted last week, but tracked that down to a beta version issue with Omni Groups OmniFocus 1.1 slashing things up. Are you SURE it wasn't called by another program? - wayne Mulqueen
I want my money back - I feel like I was scammed by Apple on this - Jesse Stay from twhirl
wayne: if you think anyone listens to me, you got another thing coming. But if I get one person to backup his/her calendar and contacts before running it, then it'll all be worth it. - Robert Scoble
I just don't even bother with it. I use Outlook <-> GCal <-> nuevasync.com - Chris Ridenour
robert: guess you could look at it that way...I did as soon as I saw your post. With all the new apps coming out for the iphone at the mo, there are bound to be conflicts with other progs. Guess it is easy to stick it to Apple seeing as they have had other issues. - wayne Mulqueen
wayne: if I were the only one having these kinds of problems, I would have kept my mouth shut. But lots of others are too. Walt Mossberg, who isn't known to do negative reviews of Apple stuff, said in his column to stay away too. So I have good company. - Robert Scoble
why app makers don't listen to every power users? - Pico Seno
that you do.. - wayne Mulqueen
Pico: in Apple's case its secrecy keeps it from really testing out a ton of different scenarios. My brother-in-law worked at Apple and he said he couldn't even tell his coworkers what he was working on. So, there is a culture internally which keeps them from testing stuff out with a huge number of people. I think that's why buggy junk gets into their products. Safari on my iPhone keeps crashing, too. Opening up some screens on the iPhone takes six seconds, and my battery often drains just sitting there. - Robert Scoble
What a disaster the mobile me service has been... - Tim FitzGerald
It is interesting how hard the core Apple fanbase is working to keep the MobileMe disaster spun in a good light. Let's be honest, if it was MS there would be no mercy here. With MS offering cloud based MS hosted exchange these days I think MobileMe is redundant for outlook users. - Soulhuntre

I love hahlo! I have mentioned in the past how I like Twinkle of all twitter apps, but I have noticed myself using direct message more to my gf and other friends since it's pretty much like free SMS, and twinkle doesn't support that. Not to mention, I live in a not so techie city, so using the nearby feature is pointless. I go with hahlo and twitterific for now. - Dennis Jackson

Seriously, he gave me some great insights into mobile enterprise market. Says RIM is at huge risk of losing major market share.
Agreed. If RIM don't shape up and if apple continues to market the iPhone as a buisiness device, they don't stand a chance. - Jonathan Aird
Its not that simple,Enterprise penetration takes years with major reliability & stability concerns. It will take iPhone years too - Roger Kondrat
My company has a huge investment in BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server) infrastructure. Not likely to just toss that out and build out support for the iPhone. - John Wright
John Wright, same as my workplace. *sigh* - imabonehead
Roger, how long do you think it might take if it were to happen? What do you think the refresh cycle is on the equipment? And what might it mean to replace or merge into the backend? Or is the cost too great and there is effectively a lock-in for years to come no matter what any other company might provide? - Loren Heiny
@Loren Well I am not a Mobile/Telecom guy but strictly from a business point of view iPhone isn't compelling enough a 'Tool' to convert hundreds of thousands of dollars in technical support, hardware, and software. Its not practical in a $$s sense. Additionally iPhone is an Apple product and Apple has never really played ball historically with business so there is some history too. Oh and one more thought, from a tax/investment perspective most companies won't turn over technology until after 3-5years. :) - Roger Kondrat
My company is already talking about Enterprise iPhone support. One of my friends runs the servers for his company and they are doing the same thing. We are in very different sectors but both have iPhone support coming. It will be a perk in a year or two that you will see on recruiting pitches. Just watch. - Andrew
I know a number of top execs from mobile companies here in the telecom corridor and they have iPhones too, or envy them, or are in denial. Yes we geeks talk about it all the time, and the web 2.0 crowd has woken up to mobile because of iPhone, but it really is a whole new game, and many in the industry have still not wrapped their heads around it all. Still, you can't count RIM out. Denial is a powerful force, and blindness to superior UI's and toleration of ugliness has a long history. - Dean Terry
1mm IPhones is great but Sony sells 100mm cell phones a year and Nokia 150mm. If Apple starts selling 1mm iPhones every weekend or ever week... - Indio Apache from twhirl
The question isn't scale. The question is: do the most desirable employees we have want these things? And is our competition going to offer them? - Andrew
Yea, but a lot of the stuff Nokia and Sony sells should be given away in a box of cereal or Cracker Jacks. - Andrew Leyden
RIM might lose market share? to who? certainly not Apple, at least not for another 4-5 years. - Bob Blunk
Until Apple can provide fine granular control of device policies that RIM has, they won't be able to break into big companies. - Ernie Oporto
Bob, so you don't see RIM losing any existing customers to Apple? I know of one architectural firm that's switching. But agreed, a couple dozen users in one small business is inconsequential. To me, though, I'd watch what happens with new customers. That's where it's bound to be the most interesting. - Loren Heiny
I agree with Ernie. Without the ability to issue policy groups of or individual devices there are going to be problems getting big companies to let go. - Sean Brady

@miqal http://hahlo.com Easily the best Twitter web client for the iPhone. Arguably even better than the Twitterific applet.
I agree. I don't know why folks are going so gaga over Twitterific on the iPhone. It's not even close. - Judi Sohn
I have to agree. I keep going back to it - Carroll
Agree. Hahlo is way better. - Nick Humphries

iTunes activation servers go down, iPhone 3G customers being sent home unactivated - http://www.engadget.com/2008...
Yes, everyone who didn't stand in line this morning can now begin laughing. - Carla Thompson
I'd think the net-crush this time would be lighter than iPhone 1.0, and they did OK with that. But maybe along with all the Apps downloads, etc. it is more load than they planned for. - Anthony Citrano
@Carla - exactly. I love Apple, and I am going to go get an Airport Express today/tonight for another project, but I can't see standing in a long line for anything. Just not in my personality. - Anthony Citrano
Epic fail. Historic fail. - Chris Baskind
Does anybody know what the line is like at the San Francisco store now? I want a new phone, but don't have the time for a long wait in line. - Jeremy Brooks
So will those who walk out with an unactivated iPhone 3G be somehow charged if we don't activate within 30 days? - Hao Chen
Nelson has something to say about that: http://op-for.com/simpson... ... (Sorry) - Chris Reed
Oh and my email is down too. I feel completely cut off from the outside world. - Carla Thompson
Not here... In Rochester, they said too damn bad. - Cyndy
Activation Server down affects first gen iPhones too that try to upgrade to 2.0 - yes, I wasn't paying attention and hit the upgrade automatically, iPhone is now sitting there deactivated with inability to connect to iTunes store. - William Reveal
Wow, guess AT&T/Apple should really have tried the "stadium flush" test before going out - Doug Haslam from twhirl
And once again, AT&T screws the whole thing up (the activation server isn't something Apple controls). - Adam Turetzky
That and the iPod touch 2.0 update still isn't available - Nick Humphries
The guy that helped me at the AT&T store said that they didn't set up any sort of internal access to iTunes so, not only were they dealing with traffic from other stores, but also from regular joes around the globe accessing iTunes. Brilliant. - Carla Thompson
And thus begins my guilt for leaving ITunes open on the PC when I left home today... (wife is home... figure she'll use it...) - Chris Reed
Well, which is it?? Some are saying it's Apple's global iTunes servers failing - Adam says it's ATT's servers... - Anthony Citrano
It's my understanding (and I certainly could be wrong) that the "activation" step of the process is done over TCP/IP to AT&T's serial # servers to register your phones radio transceiver (or check it's registration in the case of a firmware update to an already registered phone) on their network. Something Apple would really have no business running or dealing with. - Adam Turetzky
Nope... the issue is with registering to Apple. Phone is now working, but can't sync to iTunes because it can't connect to Apple. - Cyndy
I have a really pretty white apple brick, I like to look at it.. maybe touch it lightly, every once in a while. - Phil G
i did a little retrospective with a bunch of videos taken during the failure here in SF http://venturebeat.com/2008... - MG Siegler
To top everything off on my iPhone misadventure, I discovered the little handheld devices Apple stores reps are using? Ya, they run Windows. Not that there's anything wrong with that, mind you. But kind of ironic, wouldn't you say? - Tom Landini
I've been trying to download the 2.0 upgrade for my iTouch since 8AM this morning. Keep getting a message the the iTunes store is unavailable. Itunes itself upgraded fine and actually lets me select the app and add them. Anyone else having this issue? - Kevin Shannon
SF downtown store had a line down the block and around the corner. AT&T store across Market was shorter, but still estimated at over an hour. I think I will leave early today and go wait in line. - Jeremy Brooks
My girlfriend is at the Freehold, NJ mall and says there's a good 4-500 people in a line coming from the Apple store. Don't know how the AT&T store is doing in the mall. - Robert DeBord
