Not very useful IMO. For example, your planet query works, but searching for BMWs lists all car brands, which is nonsense. I'll stick with Alpha, where at least the results bear some relation to the input. Total miss here by Google.

Google Squared is nothing like alpha, But it's gameable! look up "Programming Languages" and add PowerShell -- it turns out that according to Google squared, PowerShell influenced C#, DCL, ksh, Perl, Ruby/LISP, CL, SQL, COMMAND.COM/ cmd.exe, Tcl ... and unlike other languages which have locations such as "Newark, NJ" "Paris" and "Australia" ... PowerShell is located in \Scripts\old\

The problem with Wolfram Alpha is that it doesn't have much in the way of popular culture references like Google has. Once it does it will be amazing and possible replace Google for me (but that's a long way off). Google Squared is just putting search results into a simple table. A useful feature, for sure, but is very different to Wolfram Alpha.

What I like about google squared is that it allows to add column of info of your choice. It is in developing phase but I hope Google does not keep it buried under other projects.

Given the wide variety of hardware out there from a zillion manufacturers, including knockoffs and rebrands, Windows actually does a pretty good job. What we need is for just one hardware manufacturer to develop a platform driven by their tight grip on the hardware and the OS that runs on it... hmmmm.

Best part: you could see any kind of app on this, it's not sharing a closed application market with a cell phone (like the iPod touch and the iPhone), so you won't have someone denying an app if it isn't in the best interest of the company or wireless provider.

Looks very tempting. I've got a port of android running on my N800 which works pretty well, apart from the on-screen keyboard which is so buggy it's unusable (not sure if that's just because of the port). Fingers cross for a sub £200 price in the UK.

Unfortunately I think that a collapse of the big three would be too sudden a shock to the system at a time when we can ill afford it - a million jobs lost would have a ripple effect that makes an already bad situation that much worse. The government shouldn't let that happen, but at the same time these companies need to be punished - I'd like to see a revival of anti-trust enforcement. Break the big three up into the medium thirty. Then the failure of any one won't matter nearly as much in the future.

It's a tough call. The reprocussions of an allowed failure are much deeper than you may realize. When they collapse, they take entire associated industries with them—thousands upon thousands of jobs on a global scale. I'm not fore rewarding bad business practices like the auto industry big wigs any more than I wanted to see Wall St. scumbags and EvilCo Banks get billions to go on more...

I actually that idea of splitting the company up into its natural divisions. That strategy could be beneficial all around, boosting competition and innovation, reducing the effect of a failure by a small producer on the economy as a whole and ultimately providing better vehicles. I was shooting around Union Square yesterday afternoon. The stores seemed empty. Especially the high end luxury goods stores. They just opened up a Prada store in Union Square and as pretty as it looks from the outside there didn't seem to be a single soul in inside. I think these luxury good stores will be some of the first to close.

I can see what you are saying about luxury brands, but I am reminded of something said by Frank Mckinney, the real estate developer. He said there will always be a market for starter homes and the over $100,000,000 homes. The rich tend to weather things a bit better than the middle, and the bottom rarely changes as well. So the luxury brands may not suffer too bad, at least not at first. But that is just a guess.

Eban, I think fashion actually changes in our society this time around. I think people are more ready to embrace a society not based on needless consumption. I suspect that the luxury brands actually lose quite a bit of their cache and even become unfashionable. I think marketers are at this very moment looking at how to redefine "luxury." I've been hired to shoot photos as part of a market research project sharing with marketers what I see as a "luxury" to me.

I think there's room for a handful of these sites. I don't see one uber dominant player that is all things to all people. Just like social networking sites or IM clients, that fill the need of a certain demographic, I see several twitter clones populated with like people. For example, plurk might serve the Myspace crowd. Had Twitter not stumbled so badly for so long, it might have secured a hammerlock on the space, but given its troubles, people want alternatives.

I think there will be more before there are fewer. What is interesting to me is watching to see who wins dominance and how the space gets defined. You mention Meebo, which is really thought of as a Facebook competitor. Facebook too has Twitter-like functionality and 140x the users, but I don't think of them as chat room / live web tech.

It does seem to be a bit of overkill when the new services are not all that different and don't offer that much more than current services. I think of all the services Pownce has the best feature set (allows you to be as simple as Twitter or a bit more complex if you need to be) but I think their private beta went too long and they were never able to attract a decent user base.

Christian - arguably, there will be one uber player. The network effects of these services are so important. So the one that emerges with the most people gets into a virtuous cycle. You want the network, you join where the network is. Which increases the number of connections on the network.

Jason: i disagree -- especially with this crowd. we're a fickle bunch and move on and off shiny new web toys very quickly. All one of these sites needs is for a few of the whale connectors to commit to them and actually leave Twitter. I'm not advocating that, but think Twitter is in a very precarious leadership position.

Each of these clones does seem to have a different flavor. Where Rejaw excels is in near real-time chatting. It's much more like IM when you participate in a hot topic. Conversations on Rejaw tend to swirl around single topics then move on. It's by design - Rejaw locks conversations that have no new posts after three days. If Twitter did not exist, and have such a huge user base, I think Rejaw would be a strong contender.

Hutch: i agree there will likely be one uber player for specific demos because of the network effects. Tech early-adopters will likely congregate on one (while trying others). Disagree though that the one uber player will be the same across demographics. I can see Plurk securing a large following and a leadership position with MySpacers, Rejaw could do the same with photographers because it handles pix and video well, etc.

@Jason I didn't reply to your question about Twittervision or other services atop a federated network, but any site in the network could easily report its activity to one or more hosts. The default install would report to a search service. Installing additional "apps" on a site would add to the list of services it connects to. If a friend installs the same app then we see each other through that apps' centralized server. Other apps could work site-to-site, and all of this is available now with OAuth.

Do you really think it can "take off" if people can not put it on their own server? It sounds like your marketing angle is "you won't see the fail whale here" but that might not be enough to supplant. I'm guessing that Rejaw has a better back-end than twitter by far so it will be interesting to see. But being able to have your 'friends' in your own PostgreSQL db, that's cool. Also, their profiles auto-update from their home server so it's a live address book.

I'm guessing from the profiles of the people on Rejaw talking about Rails that they have a similar back-end, driven by a database (probably MySQL) and having the same scaling problems when loads get heavy. Having a technically better and more scalable micro-blogging platform is just the price of entry to the space, for me. I've got several big ideas I want to add after I get that far, one of which I think will be huge when we get there.

OK, I'll stop buggin' you. But I would love to see you create an interface on your system for the omb spec. Regarding my own effort, the schema is well-normalized, you can have multiple OpenIDs per user, each message is stored only 1 time in the db no matter how many people receive it, each message gets transmitted to a given host only 1 time, the download is 600k, you could run it on an iPhone or any tiny device that can pump a php4 binary. It's totally fun. Cheers.

That's why I only follow people I trust. (EDIT) I should add...and only follow if I can verify a person is really them. That's why I like the idea of http://claimid.com/. (EDIT #2) It would help if they DIDN'T black-out the User ID. How is anyone supposed to know if they're already following this account? And the last line is a little misleading. However, I'm pretty sure they were referring specifically to the worm the tweeted link sent people to.

Great idea, group friends and/or related tabs. An idea I've had for a while was "Friend Weight" where as a friend is slower to leave the front page or be buried down. Who knows what's up FriendFeed's sleeves?

Friendfeed should simply let you privately rate all relationships on a 1 to 10 scale. You could then filter FF by these numerical ratings. It would also be useful information for them to use when they come out with their "best of the day, week, month, etc." algorithm based on social metadata and personal relevancy.

I do not like the idea of "close friends" as defined by any application. A generic grouping mechanism is more helpful because you can create your "close friends" group, and you can create a "techies" group or whatever else you desire. I am actually surprised that FF does not have it already given that rooms have been around for a while.

Thank god, this is one of the few mishaps of MobileMe that didn't happen to me, yet. Woke up to deleted contacts on my iPhone one morning. Thank god, they were "only" deleted on the phone, so nothing was lost. But it just makes you remember: "When was the last backup?"

I know they can't test every config, but atleast try to work out the bugs. Everyday I here of another mobileMe disasters.. Before making such proclamations, you might want to do a little homework. Did you even talk to MobileMe tech support? http://www.apple.com/support.... There might have been a simple fix had you checked. I've been using MobileMe since July 18th; I sync three Macs and my iPhone and haven't had any major issues. I'm adding an XP laptop next; I don't expect any problems with that either.

Albert: a simple fix? Google Calendar has been going for six hours recreating my calendar so far. This was a problem with Outlook. I have 8,400+ calendar entries. It's only recreated 2,400 of them so far. Sigh. Macs don't even have Outlook so, of course you haven't had problems yet. Hope nothing bad happens on your XP machine. I'd back up just in case. At least my calendar will be back tomorrow cause I had a backup.

That is, there could have been something Apple could have done to restore your calendar entries, assuming you synced your calendars to MobileMe. That would have been worth a shot. Again, we don't know the culprit here, between Outlook, Vista, MobileMe and whatever else is installed on your machine. I've done enough tech support to know we don't have the complete story here.

I didn't have any problems with calendars on MobileMe, but it decided one morning to delete all of my contacts bar three. That was the point at which I decided I'd move back to using Exchange, which Just Works on the iPhone, and (via Entourage) on my Mac. And amazingly, I had people trying to tell me it wasn't Apple's fault, despite it being Apple technology, running Apple software, on an Apple machine!

Not worth the very limited utility given the fact that it won't sync up with Google Calendar, either. I got MobileMe through my brother's family plan, and still had to buy Spanning Sync to do that. And I have to keep the intermediary computer on (my home iMac) because it doesn't sync OTA. There's got to be something better than this...

Apple's Mobile Me just deleted all my Outlook calendar items. I'm getting them all back from my Google Calendar. Wild, what a crappy service. I told it to use Outlook to resolve all conflicts, too. Has this happened to anyone else? Makes me very scared to use it.

Seems a bit harsh to go telling everyone to STOP using MobileMe, I use it through exchange and works fine. I did have an issue with the ical being corrupted last week, but tracked that down to a beta version issue with Omni Groups OmniFocus 1.1 slashing things up. Are you SURE it wasn't called by another program?

Pico: in Apple's case its secrecy keeps it from really testing out a ton of different scenarios. My brother-in-law worked at Apple and he said he couldn't even tell his coworkers what he was working on. So, there is a culture internally which keeps them from testing stuff out with a huge number of people. I think that's why buggy junk gets into their products. Safari on my iPhone keeps crashing, too. Opening up some screens on the iPhone takes six seconds, and my battery often drains just sitting there.

I have mentioned in the past how I like Twinkle of all twitter apps, but I have noticed myself using direct message more to my gf and other friends since it's pretty much like free SMS, and twinkle doesn't support that. Not to mention, he's got the audio settings screwed. If you're doing a mono recording, there's NO reason to do a 48 encode versus a 44.1. All it's going to do is increase your size. 44.1, mono at 64k is perfectly fine for voice.

My company has a huge investment in BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server) infrastructure. Not likely to just toss that out and build out support for the iPhone.

@Loren Well I am not a Mobile/Telecom guy but strictly from a business point of view iPhone isn't compelling enough a 'Tool' to convert hundreds of thousands of dollars in technical support, hardware, and software. Its not practical in a $$s sense. Additionally iPhone is an Apple product and Apple has never really played ball historically with business so there is some history too. Oh and one more thought, from a tax/investment perspective most companies won't turn over technology until after 3-5years. :)

My company is already talking about Enterprise iPhone support. One of my friends runs the servers for his company and they are doing the same thing. We are in very different sectors but both have iPhone support coming. It will be a perk in a year or two that you will see on recruiting pitches. Just watch.

I know a number of top execs from mobile companies here in the telecom corridor and they have iPhones too, or envy them, or are in denial. Yes we geeks talk about it all the time, and the web 2.0 crowd has woken up to mobile because of iPhone, but it really is a whole new game, and many in the industry have still not wrapped their heads around it all. Still, you can't count RIM out. Denial is a powerful force, and blindness to superior UI's and toleration of ugliness has a long history.

To me, though, I'd watch what happens with new customers. That's where it's bound to be the most interesting.

The guy that helped me at the AT&T store said that they didn't set up any sort of internal access to iTunes so, not only were they dealing with traffic from other stores, but also from regular joes around the globe accessing iTunes. Brilliant.

It's my understanding (and I certainly could be wrong) that the "activation" step of the process is done over TCP/IP to AT&T's serial # servers to register your phones radio transceiver (or check it's registration in the case of a firmware update to an already registered phone) on their network. Something Apple would really have no business running or dealing with.

Nope... the issue is with registering to Apple. Phone is now working, but can't sync to iTunes because it can't connect to Apple.

I've been trying to download the 2.0 upgrade for my iTouch since 8AM this morning. Keep getting a message the the iTunes store is unavailable. Itunes itself upgraded fine and actually lets me select the app and add them. Anyone else having this issue?
