I think this is bigger than Twitter and FB... I think it's some interweb routes or something. I had a VoIP call going with a party local to me and two across the country and I lost the two across the country, but maintained the local party. And others are commenting on other sites showing signs of outages. - Timothy Federwitz from Alert Thingy

As I said, I predict a baby-boom in 9 months... wait and see! - Jordi Soler
SEO Experts can analyze their charts, celebrities and wannabe's can entertain us with video (maybe some cool Twitter Whore like stuff) , and social media experts can quickly become Fail Whale Experts. - Michele Lorito-Chase
@Lee Provost don't you thing you're going to be a little apocaliptic ? :-) - Filippo Ronco
Twitter downing has to be a lesson for all of us. if sometimes gmail or even google will be down. what we all are going to do in that situation??? - obolonskyi

I'm hoping the social media experts go away and do something useful. - Parvez Halim

@Jordi LOL, considering that there are a vast amount of single male computer geeks out there in the twitter community, baby boom effect might be negligible :-D - Lee Provoost

AAANND.. it's back. At least for a moment I guess.. - Alex Schleber
AAANND it's GONE! ..Again. At least I managed to send out a quick FriendFeed SOS, as in: "Still think you shouldn't have all of your favorite tweeps in a "backup system" on FriendFeed? Join here: www.friendfeed.com/alexschleber " - Alex Schleber

A good FF day- new familiar faces on this thread. - E-Advocate Network
What will the blackhat SEO experts, the SM spammers, and the social media experts do during a widespread outage? The answer is obvious: While sitting out the crisis they're fine-tuning their methodology. Seriously, your question offends me. There's a gazillion of SEO experts out there who do not abuse social media. - Sebastian
Sebastian there can't be a gazillion SEO experts! What's 10,000 keywords times 20?? (and that's being generous!) - Arleen Anderson
Would a social media expert consider it to be a crisis? If they rely so heavily on just one or two tools that it's enough to throw them into a tizzy, their expert status would seem to me to be ... questionable, at best. - Gord McLeod
Agreed. - Greg
Arleen, 10,000 keyword phrases times 20 is a tiny fraction of the search terms that are worth optimizing for. Think of the long tail. Also, consider lots of webmasters and even publishers / site owners / bloggers / Web developers ... SEO experts who are able to optimize their stuff quite successfully but don't sell or publish their expertise. Many of them, and even many SEO consultants, do make sensible use of social media, as plain users. - Sebastian
Gord, in a social media spammer's book 2 hours of outage, IOW 2 hours w/o sales from sneakily distributed links to questionable sales pitches, can sum up to way more than a good day's beer money. ;) However, "crisis" might be a term too strong for this potential loss. - Sebastian
+1 Sebastian - Bill Sodeman
I'm hung up on hop 12! - bev
I love FF! - John Giglio
come to Friend Feed? Not - Rob Cairns
You must be dying of laughter now Robert! - Arleen Anderson
Arleen: yes, reading this is fun. Sebastien SEO types are so easy to wind up. ;-) - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Gotta love it... @RobCairns says "come to Friend Feed? Not" and then his page shows ONE POST from Twitter in the past 18 hours! And that one talks about how Twitter seems to be slowing down again! (Sorry Rob, but that's just too good to let pass!) - Mark "DerBingle" J
Robert, admit it, you broke Twitter by massively unfollowing people. The DDoS attack reports have just been a ruse to cover up the fact that you were the backbone of Twitter all this time. - Louis Trapani
Louis: that is true. I pissed the bots off. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Keep running into the wall a few times then find alternate outlets such as ff, linkedIn, etc... - Kirsten Mitchell from iPhone
Looks like the devious plan to move everyone to FF is working well. LOL :) - Geer
Ha! The whole Facebook Twitter slowdown may have been just people clicking on spam (not a DDoS botnet). How funny! Manual DDoS. See Bill Woodcock's theory at CNet, AP, SF Gate, and The Register http://ff.im/6gLmO - Mitchell Tsai
There you go again implying the only ones that use twitter is SEO experts, the celebrities, the spammers, the bots, and the social media experts - This is definitely SPIN. Perhaps you should join CNN also LOL - RetiredTeacherD
Ironic, given your status as a celebrity social media expert who constantly spams about bots... :-P - David Kettler
Now they'll have time to shower and do their laundry! - Ron Hagenhoff
Mashable
Twitter Down: Twitter Doesn’t Know Why - http://mashable.com/2009...
isn't a joke!! - abdellah
Glad we can talk about this and see the info via FriendFeed - I almost resorted to my bookmarks to check out Mashable and TechCrunch :) - Robert J Taylor
reboot - Kevin Norman
Is it inevitable because of their architecture that they will continue to have these problems until a massive rewrite? - Dusty Edenfield
The world is collapsing for a ton of people right now ;-) - Caio Cesar
i dunno - they were coping quite well with all the growth. They did do a lot of work after thier last set of probloms. Pesonally i think its a data centre failure. Enough of the system ( or just the important bits) got taken down that its useless. - Roberto Bonini
there's always identi.ca - Imabug
Facebook is having issues for me to post, could it be some form of ajax update that was posted that broke things? - Thomas Vincent
it caused by unfollowing 106,000 people by Robert Scoble))) - obolonskyi
Scoble with his mass unfollow created a "disturbance in the force"..Twitter's servers had gotten used to that load profile and went insane upon the recent change :) Looks like Twitter took down FF with it for a moment as well (for me at least). "Twitter is down" shout outs overload? Or something about the feed input to FF hanging/bursting/etc. ?? - Alex Schleber
It's been having reporting problems for the past week, for me at least, unless I missed some new decision to reset the tweet clock. my 9000+ tweets and dwindled down to just the most recent ones - Melanie Reed
i'm feeling really bad for the bots right now, since they are 25% of Twitter's traffic - Kevin Norman
@cerveau / obolonskyi Haha - we were thinking the same thing simultaneously.. - Alex Schleber
Twitter's blog does mention the reporting problem. I guess this implies I don't have a legitimate account?! ;) - Melanie Reed
Twitter/status reports they're fighting a DoS attack. - Roger Jennings
Ahmed Ibrahim
I have one sick 50MBPS internet connection :)
complaining about 50MBPS? how about connecting with 50KBPS??? hehehe - rommel from email
Na in this context 'sick' refers to 'awesomness' :) 50MBPS. Damn you guys are in the stone age! - Ahmed Ibrahim
that ain't bad indeed.. I'm waiting now for a 20 one, but still on 6, working fine as well, only uploading is a bitch with only 1mb - Jaap Willem
I'm in prehistory with dinosaurs - 512kbps... :) - carrotmadman6
Robert Scoble
While lots of people are giving @techcrunch #twittergate crap for thinking through the publishing of stolen Twitter docs, someone else published: http://www.businessinsider.com/twitter...
He spent too much time sleeping and thinking it over, the hacker went elsewhere. The competition scooped TC by posting - Mark
That little slideshow just scratches the surface. I don't think that's all 300+ pages that has been discussed. - Jason Shellen
"350 million at the end of 2011" Their growth projection on users - Mark
that's 1/3 of a billion, nice - Mark
that slideshow is bullshit. arrington stops to think and discuss, bizinsider grabs a handful of images, many already seen yesterday, and milks them with hype for pageviews. dumb. imho - Marshall Kirkpatrick
The original link (in French) - http://www.korben.info/hack-de... - carrotmadman6
I am sure Arrington will come up with a wonderful title for a post, and outdo them all - Mark
I believe it. I just saw a Cisco banner ad on CNBC and they put their twitter account up there instead of their website - Stephen Pickering
If they have a third of a billion uses in a few years, some peopel on the SUL will have dozens of millions of followers - Mark
Imagine Mashable pushing an article link to twitter, and 25 million people seeing it? - Mark
Mark: actually that data is funny, because my friends who are analyzing Twitter's user base say there's fewer than 10 million real users on Twitter right now, and while the user base is growing quickly, I don't see it continue to grow. Twitter is not Facebook. - Robert Scoble
Ah. I thought 1/3 of a billion looked a little on the high side. - Mark
Korben will not release all info. - Peter Dawson
Someone will Peter, you have to think someone will - Mark
Facebook’s Offical User Count Now 250 Million according to new TC post just now - Mark
Jason: probably not, but if the data is really getting widely received someone WILL publish it all, maybe on a private bittorrent. - Robert Scoble
Lolable quote from TC article: "How long before Facebook reaches one billion, and can it beat Twitter to that milestone?" Err... of course! - Mark
Mark: yes, and Facebook's engagement scores are much higher than Twitters are. Unless Twitter radically changes they arent going to be the next Facebook. They are, however, getting an extraordinary amount of hype, but now that Oprah seems to have lost interest, watch for that to subside quickly. - Robert Scoble
Mark: Facebook is growing the size of a Twitter every few weeks. No way Twitter get there first. - Robert Scoble
I guess. But they must have based these figures on something. They clearly know something we don't. Maybe some super secret plan to blast into the mainstream - Mark
Nope, the hack was just for publicity in the uberrworld of grayhatting.. no malicious intent.. so all the info will never come out.. compromising an a/c of this nature with dns redirect is highly practically phun.. IMHO..someone tried it.. it worked and they dug around.. pulled info and leaked a bit here and there.. makes the hacker look real good in terms of being a source of intel ! - Peter Dawson
Robert: Your friend, who's researching Twitters figures - is he / she publishing his / her findings? I have no idea how they can get accurate figures. - Jim Connolly
Facebook is closing in on Google's number of pageviews per month! That is huge. All they gotta do is turn on the Yellow Pages paradigm and in a few years that 15billion valuation is going to seem small - Stephen Pickering
Jim: yes, they are working on a blog about the data. At least that's the plan right now. - Robert Scoble
Those are just the screenshots that everybody has. TC claims to have _all_ the documents, not just screenshots of examples. - EricaJoy
If Twitter wanted to kill TechCrunch's story, they would just publish the information themselves - Jesse Stay
TC claims to have all the documents, and this far they'll be the only ones publishing some of them fully, while the other sites just publish screenshots. The Hacker completed his task of making us see that the cloud is not that safe, of course it depends on the password you use. - Jorge
Jorge: the password doesn't matter. The question you use to release passwords does. For instance, if you put in your question "what is my mom's name?" you can figure that out easily. It also is Google's fault for not then emailing the password to the original account. So, it's not cloud computing fault's, per se, but the fact that these systems haven't been thought out well. - Robert Scoble
Is this Google's "virus problem" that Microsoft had in late 1990s to 2006 or so? Yes. - Robert Scoble
The buzz is greater than its content. - Nir Ben Yona
Solution to online security, IMO, is to take it offline - have a global single-sign-on authority, and validate with either biometric or unique private key through SMS. to cellphone, - Aaman (Clone of FF)
those screen shots weren't all that interesting. It will be interesting if/when the full docs come out. - Thomas Hawk
My initial reaction was not to publish stolen information but I realize that the public would not make the same charge against news organizations who report on leaked documents, in fact we thrive on "investigative reports" that have obtained secret documents and recordings. It's hypocritical to throw stones at TC and others for doing what traditional media has done for years. - Karen Swim
AFAIK, investigative reporters don't make a habit of displaying stolen documents, they merely report on their contents. - EricaJoy from IM
++ to EricaJoy. Sadly, we only get to deal with bloggers here. Not trained investigative reporters. - David Chartier from iPhone
Mauritius
Maurice fait don de US$ 500 000 à l’Inde - http://www.lematinal.com/news...
I don't understand...why should Mauritius give so much to help the state of Bihar? - Adarsh
Because India gives much more back in terms of investment, loans & aid. ;) - carrotmadman6
So I help Bihar and India helps me. Can't India help itself? - Adarsh
Unfortunately in India you have politicians that spend taxpayer's money in glorifying themselves instead of helping the needy. - carrotmadman6
Robert Scoble
Why did Google announce Chrome OS this week? Well, of course, Microsoft has a big announcement coming on Monday (I'm embargoed).
It'll be interesting to discuss both announcements too, and what they mean for each other. - Robert Scoble
Is this that internet clipboard that Ray Ozzie demoed a few years ago? Maybe they've completed it! - Diego Barros 
I hope to see something good come out of this. Are they saying free or paid for the Chrome OS? - Anthony Timberlake
That's my Scoble - seeing things behind the things! - Alex 'BuckyBit' Covic
*raises eyebrow* Interesting. I applaud more competition - Mo Kargas
I'm intrigued! - Daynah
Diego, no, it's one of Microsoft's primary businesses. Did you know Microsoft has 14 billion dollar businesses? - Robert Scoble
Related to Microsoft's Gazelle browser? http://news.cnet.com/8301-13... - Kiran Patchigolla
Windows 7 GPL 3.0 ?? Brouahahaa:-) - Alex 'BuckyBit' Covic
cool, im thinking its a special version of windows 7 for netbooks? - sean percival
Microsoft isn't doing too bad lately. - Eric Florenzano
Anthony: I'm sure it will be free. - Robert Scoble
Robert: I'm sure they do. As I'm sure IBM does. But I don't care about IBM. :) - Diego Barros 
BingOS? - imabonehead
imabonehead :D - Alex 'BuckyBit' Covic
imabonehead: no. :-) Microsoft isn't that disruptive. - Robert Scoble
And that means Google Is doing well once again, doesn't it? - Markingegno - Donato from Android
The Chrome OS will be for netbooks and such for now. And is Microsoft announcing the Free One Care? - Dylan Richardson
haha BingOS! I like it - Diego Barros 
Bingo yes :) - Kiran Patchigolla
*chuckles at imabonehead* - Daynah
LOL BingOS! The startup sound will be Ballmer saying "BING!" like he did at AllThingsD conference. - Paul Salzman
Bing-OS was his name-o! - Daynah
Bingos <--- that was his name-o - Micah Wittman
GoogleOS is already out - "It's the browser" - the GNU/Linux/Ubuntu skin is just marketing... - Alex 'BuckyBit' Covic
*high fives Daynah* - Micah Wittman
An open source OS - how much stable will it be?? - Palak Mathur
Question is Robert, if you are not allowed to say, how on earth did Google find out? - Sandra Large
Bingo-sssss - Alex 'BuckyBit' Covic
Micah, we're on the same google brain wave tonight. :) - Daynah
Palak - you troll - Alex 'BuckyBit' Covic
Ride the wave :D - Micah Wittman
Sandra: it might just be coincidence. Or maybe they have great spies. Depends on your view of the world, huh? - Robert Scoble
Microsoft is open-sourcing their code too??? Yeah, didn't think so. :) - Josh Fraser
Josh: part of the Microsoft announcement on Monday runs on Google Chrome (and Firefox for that matter). - Robert Scoble
Not all "open-sourcing" is created equal. - Micah Wittman
Maybe Microsoft is making it's secret announcement this week cause they knew Google was about to announce? - Alan W Silberberg
Robert - say no more, don't get into trouble, Duder. - Alex 'BuckyBit' Covic
Thats real funny Josh .. Its like pulling teeth to get them to give a discount on anything. - Dylan Richardson
Alan: maybe! It all depends on how you look at the world, doesn't it? - Robert Scoble
Nice Cant Wait! - James Hunter
It just seems to coincidental. Like President of Iran making big speech during MJ's funeral! - Alan W Silberberg
Scoble the only MS announcement they could make that would blow me away is Windows 7 Early release. - Dylan Richardson
Dylan: Microsoft has a few other impressive things up its sleeve. - Robert Scoble
So the question is now that Google's making an OS, will Eric Schmidt resign from Apple's Board? - Paul Salzman
It's all just ones and zeros. ;) - Victor Panlilio
So, do we give Calacanis credit for calling a Google OS back in 2006? http://calacanis.com/2006... - Mike Doeff
Sanat: insightful. Paul: Google makes a smart phone OS, and he hasn't resigned, so why would he now? - Robert Scoble
Zune HD. Looks nice for the first time ever I'm thinking about it. - Dylan Richardson
Google is talking about it's goals at this point. Isn't Intel trying a netbook OS too that boots fast? It'll be interesting to see which OS features win out here with different implementations. Is instant on to the browser the key or will some other feature shine? Fun times ahead, though really need to see things in action. - Loren Heiny from iPhone
Dylan: sorry, that is dead on arrival. They should have combined Zune with a cell phone. - Robert Scoble
I got a screen photo here: http://ff.im/4WoVE, I don't have much comments yet due 2 that I am using it now, its not much of an announcement. - polou/indigo_bow
Robert, Zune with a phone hmmm??? I hope ur rite as u said ur embargoed! - polou/indigo_bow
Gazelle? - carrotmadman6
MS does not have the Balls to take on the iPhone. - Dylan Richardson
Wait for Monday. Nothing else to say. - Frédéric Sidler from iPhone
Robert, because they claim to excuse him from the part of the meetings related to iPhone...computer OS is arguably the biggest segment of Apple. I guess he can stick around for the hardware discussions. I know my argument is elementary, but maybe walking a line here? - Paul Salzman
What was the last big hit new MS product? - James Watters
But if they did that would be cool competition is always better for the consumer. - Dylan Richardson
James: Xbox? Dynamics? Bing? - Robert Scoble
Apple is not really what I will be looking at Android is the big boy here - polou/indigo_bow
MS Office on the browser would also explain why GMail and Google Apps are finally out of Beta today too. - Ron Schott
OH OH Project Natal is coming out!! lol j/k - Dylan Richardson
Robert: Thanks, wasn't hating, just looking for organic momentum from products. Bungie was def a godsend to 360. Bing proved Seth Godin wrong which I greatly enjoyed. - James Watters
@Robert Scoble: So I looked up Microsoft's last quater's financial report, Microsoft does indeed have a $14 billion business :) - Long Zheng
Bing is nice I have to say. Here is how I use it .. If I want to Buy or shop a price I use Bing. If I need info its Google. - Dylan Richardson
MS better fix the %$^#%@^ Gumblar hole first, it's apparently worse than Conficker -- http://rixstep.com/2... - Victor Panlilio
MS also has ~6+ B in R&D, is it efficient? - James Watters
Not new news, but it could be the launch of Silverlight 3.0? Offline mode and all the other nice bits, runs on Chrome and Firefox. - Travis Koger from iPhone
Oh, really? When I get something on embargo...I don't write about getting it under embargo. Come on, Robert. You're better than that. Or at least I hope you are. - Andrew Feinberg
I agree @travis, but google make it like a news - polou/indigo_bow
James: it doesn't matter, a company like Microsoft needs a product pipeline to remain relevant. Research lets Microsoft remain relevant and on Monday you'll see a bit of how it does that. - Robert Scoble
OK. Google Chrome OS. Netbook makers say Linux based Netbooks have high return rates. How will people react to a Netbook that only runs a browser? Linux has remained niche. - Dileepa Prabhakar
Andrew: sometimes you have to take a risk. This is one of those times. - Robert Scoble
Robert: I will look forward to it. We ALL win when great software comes to the market. Almost nothing better in the world. - James Watters
14 billion, maybe Office that runs on Silverlight, therefore in the browser properly. - Travis Koger from iPhone
Do you all think GoogleOS will just boot up right into the browser? Browser will be in firmware? - Paul Salzman
BTW, Robert, will Microsoft finally dump IE and develop a Webkit based browser? (Forget Gazelle. Yet another stupid Microsoft research project that will never successfully make it mainstream.) - Dileepa Prabhakar
Paul: no highly unlikely. - James Watters
Dileepa: I don't know the answer to that. But the demos on Monday (I have a bunch of video coming) were shown to me in Firefox. So maybe that's our answer right there. - Robert Scoble
James: so you think it will sit on top of Linux or something? Or just be a new flavor of Linux? - Paul Salzman
Linux flavor of Chrome, thus far not arrived yet - polou/indigo_bow
Paul: I'd look at Android as a precursor and say yes its going to use a google refined linux kernel, and I believe the post even says a windowing system. I'll check TC again to be sure brb. - James Watters
Paul: I bet there will be some customization of Linux underneath Google's Chrome OS. I'm intrigued and can't wait to see what they will do with it. - Robert Scoble
Google says the software architecture will basically be the current Chrome browser running inside “a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel.” (quoting TC) - James Watters
I can almost bet that its web based Microsoft Office with some nifty real-time collaboration features. - sameer
Sameer - I agree. Explains cross-browser compatability - Daniel Lazarides from iPhone
"a new windowing system" leaves the door open for a greater level of abstraction away from the kernel for sure. Probably still with some access to files, devices, etc on the local hardware though which a browser alone would be a clumsy solution too. - James Watters
If Microsoft's BIG announcements are Web based Office (already demo'ed and announced), Windows Azure RTW (nothing unexpected) or Windows 7 RTM (already announced to be announced!), there is nothing that's going to surprise people on Monday then. - Dileepa Prabhakar
I think Wave might be integrated into the OS. - Jayasimhan Masilamani
Dileepa: Windows7i -- the Cloud OS from MS - Paul Salzman
Jaya: Like as a built in extension to the windowing system? Like IE and explorer? - James Watters
@Alex Will they be able to match Open Source strategies as followed by Ubuntu, etc?? - Palak Mathur
just another rehashed disaster of windows in another marketing created packing - Zac Bowling
Dileepa - They haven't talked much about collaboration using Office web. There was one OneNote demo that showed some realtime synchronization. I'm thinking more Wave-like realtime features. - sameer
Zac: I'm going to believe Robert, but lets give him hell if this is marketing glossy! :) - James Watters
Paul Salzman: Windows 7i with WGA! -- works only when accessed through IE when running on a WGA validated copy of Windows. - Dileepa Prabhakar
Dileepa: that's it, we've called it! ;) - Paul Salzman
Robert you managed to convert a complete google night into a complete MS night :) - Kiran Patchigolla
James: it's been a while since I've felt compelled to do more than five videos at a Microsoft press conference. See ya on Monday. - Robert Scoble
sameer: That will be mimicking existing Google Docs feature. Google Wave is at a completely different level and I am not sure if Microsoft is up to doing something like that. - Dileepa Prabhakar
Till Monday it is, I'm thinking I'll even blog it. - James Watters
Wave might act as the collaboration platform on the OS. But that leads to another question. Will the OS be tied to Google accounts for login? - Jayasimhan Masilamani
Dileepa: Let's see, I think there's potential for implementation of realtime collaboration across the web based and desktop offerings of Office that could be of big mainstream impact. It's got to be something related to Office, Robert talks about the "$14 billion business" - The only other Microsoft business I know of that's that big is Windows. - sameer
sameer: I said that Microsoft has 14 billion dollar businesses. Plural, not singular, but I also said it was one of Microsoft's primary businesses. That narrows it down a bit, yes. - Robert Scoble
My guess is a MS hardware that will shake the netbook market!! - Krishnan Subramanian
So that's a Win7 RTM announcement, combined with Web Office. If Web Office will be free to use, the combination of W7 Starter with Web Office will be a huge notebook hit. - Kirill Petrovsky
If ChromeOS was meant to counter MS, then the logical MS announcement would be some kind of OS project, like maybe a combination of Microsoft Singularity (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... ) combined with Silverlight for NetBooks or mobiles. - Ray Cromwell
MS Web Office for sure: Scoble said it runs on Chrome and Firefox and it's a multi billion business. Actually, MS Office accounted for 18-19B $ in 2008. - Jérôme Flipo
I fear that if the tech side of their release if good (but whatever the pricing), Google Apps isn't ready for the fight. - Jérôme Flipo
Microsoft announces the cloud OS? I'm still not sure about a Google OS though. - Burcu Dogan
Web Office in Silverlight, together with a mobile version that means we get Silverlight on WinMo and maybe even IPhone would be a win for me - Ian Blackburn
I cannot wait...:-) but I DO have a clue... - Eric Denekamp
Lots of people suggesting Office-in-browser but if that were it why would Robert be under embargo given they've already announced it and demo'd it? I'm not saying it ISN'T Office-in-browser but if it is then something doesn't add up! - Jamie
Good point Jamie - the two primary business in MS are Office and Windows (in terms of revenue anyway), so perhaps this is more to do with a Windows OS in the cloud? How would that look? - Ian Blackburn
Initially, Google VS Live, Then Chrome Vs IE & Google Vs Bing, finally its Windows VS Chrome OS - Michael_techie
Ummm... are they announcing an online version of MS Office like Google Docs? - prolificdyslexic
that's why I do not subscribe to Scoble - too many comments on his articles, too much noise - Павел Романовский
I don't see any noise in here. Interesting conversation! - Robert Scoble
The MS guy at Portland Cloud Camp said Azure was going to be released very, very <wink, wink> soon. #cloudcampPDX - Gary Walter (gwalter)
All google apps platform out of beta yesterday, now Chrome Os.. Is definitely the answer to Seven + Silverlight/OfficeOnLine Monday ;) - CantorJF from iPhone
@gwalter You’re maybe right. The front end would be MS Gazelle, and the back end would be Azure. - Bram Pitoyo
Microsoft is finally putting the Zune out of it's (and out) misery and killing it? :) - Diego Barros 
Office Web Apps release to public beta is well overdue - first promised for end of 2008. If this is embargoed then it must involve something new. ScottGu hinted that Silverlight 4 was already in development. SL3 is released this Friday. So maybe SL4 will be released,in beta with a beta of Office Web Apps showing some SL4 features (like more AIR like features).. - Joe Wood
It seems like "too late" and illogical for Microsoft to come-up with another vendor-lock-in type innovation and expect positive results. Microsoft is not run by daredevils nor wimps. The announcement Robert talking about might be about a web based productivity application suite, which is standards compliant and offers a familiar interface and workflow for people, thus easily adoptable and steal competitors' (G, Y!, Zoho, 37S, Adobe?, etc.) user base. - Berk D. Demir
The thing thats got me shitting my pants over all this is Games. I need Windows to play all the latest Direct X 10 and 11 games. Linux is hopeless in that regard. - Mark
Audience in here is mainly composed of technically inclined, early adopters. We feel comfortable with online apps and mainly ready to ditch (or already ditched) many offline applications in favor of our new toys. OTOH, that's a huge paradigm shift for the other majority of less technically inclined and incomparably bigger masses. Microsoft still have the power to lead masses, create... more... - Berk D. Demir
Interesting discussion! I vote for MS Office online ! - Krishnamoorthy
I commented in istartedsomething on Long Zheng theories with this list. so why not here after having read all of Scoble responses?: Safe Guesses (not crazy): 1.- Office Ensemble (Office Web Apps + Office Live Update) and a Office 2010 public CTP (the most likely one) 2.-Microsoft Online Services gets full release along with a full release of Windows Azure while one of the new Data... more... - Avatar X from FriendFoo
i crammed a lot of guesses that may not have to do with the announcement so maybe robert could say warm or hot to the whole list without having to specify. :P - Avatar X
I vaguely recollect listening to the GIllmor Gang in June/July 2008 where Robert said he'd just visited Microsoft Research and seen "an amazing new browser". If memory serves me correctly it was said in the context of mobile devices but who knows.....this may be another contender for Monday's announcement! - Jamie
Anything related to Midori ? http://technologizer.com/2008... - Krishnamoorthy
Microsoft has already made their counter-move to a Google OS. It's called Windows Azure. It'll serve apps to the Google OS with ease and MS will make money in the process. Yeah, I know today the money be nowhere near what the Windows OS makes, but while the Google OS is gaining traction as a desktop OS, Azure will be gaining traction as an app hosting platform for that very same Google OS and others. - Jeff Weber
More spam news will come in. Azure, Mirot ha ha ha - Michael_techie
just another social network (where the IE users might hang out) - Dobromir Hadzhiev
Another huge innovation like renaming Bing? - Burcu Dogan
Google is initially going after netbooks via a new OpenSource OS. If Microsoft's Next Big Thing is Azure then they are betting that a locked-in cloud-based OS will trump Google's move. It's gonna be VEHLEY INTELESTING to see this play out. - J.D. Deutschendorf
launching online enabled MS Office, free and beta - Павел Романовский
I really hope it's not anything Silverlight related, some one is on crack if they think the end game is everything running in a plugin in a browser. - Scott Kahler
Tease. Tease. :) - Charlie Anzman
Robert, they'd better have more than a few "14 billion dollar" businesses. Their market cap is 200 billion for heaven's sake. - Stephen Pickering
sorry, have to ask. did it make you cry? :) - dannysullivan
does this mean google=novell? - Eran Even-Kesef
Made the news onto electricpig your announcement! - Giraffes Up In The AIr
Dr. Schmidt HAS to resign from the Apple board... too many conflicts of interest (iPhone v Android, Chrome OS v OS X, Chrome v Safari). What could he possibly be adding that can't be obtained through someone else? - Gerald Buckley
You are in Palo Alto? I am in Mendocino. :) - Joe
pricing of Azure will definitily be one of the announcements; not the BIG one. Office online perhaps... - Jeroen De Miranda
Very interesting indeed. Chrome OS sounds like a great companion to Windows on a netbook+ device, for those times when you do need instant web/email. Looking forward to your videos! - Will Johnson
Since the event on monday is WPC I'm guessing that Steve Balmer will present MS view on future of the Enterprise and showing off some of what Ray Ozzie has been working on. Coming full circle with Azure (computing infrastructure), Mesh (powering collaboration), SilverLight (future of runtime enviroments on all platforms) and of course all of this software+services has to be powered by Windows Enterprise Servers on the back end. - Daniel Chow
Also the new Office is the first application to launch under the above stack. Scoble, did I get anywhere close to any of the embargoed announcements? :) - Daniel Chow
Robert - Was GLADoS based on you? ;) - Matthew DeVries
What do you think? How long will the Apple-Google Friendship last? http://friendfeed.com/applero... - Hans Kainz
They are going to announce the release of IE 9 - the even worse with net standards addition. - Bobby Griffith
Windows 7 Home/Business/Ultimate Netbook Edition. Each with different capabilities and things disabled for no reason other than to confuse users and make more money. - Scott Koon
heh - i know now what the announcement is and i am not embargoed - i should make a post :) - Allen Stern
Go for it, Allen! Inquiring minds want to know! - Rudy Amid
Well if you do know, you owe it to your readers to report the news, - Mark
Mark - That's if you see tech journalists (which I don't think Robert even classifies himself as) as true hard hitting journalists (think woodward and burnstein, ed Murrow) or if you think of them in the vein of Sports writers. Sports writers, like tech writers, need to foster relationships and have their names known and have to cross closer into the friendzone to get us the day to day... more... - Matthew DeVries
Mark: sorry, I signed an embargo. That's the way these things go and I'm not willing to burn this relationship, sorry. You'll know on Monday. Matthew is exactly right. And even with Woodward and Burnstein, they played this game. You didn't know who Deep Throat was, even though that was news too. - Robert Scoble
Not even going to go for the Deep Throat joke... I swear, I'm not going to... :p - Bill Heslin
what announcement? - kang
I didn't mean Robert should report it. I meant Allen Stern who commented he was not under an embargo. He knows it, he has no NDA, he should report it. - Mark
RT Allen Stern "heh - i know now what the announcement is and i am not embargoed - i should make a post :)" - Mark
I hope its not Gazelle. If it is I respect Robert for abiding by the embargo. It seems as though no one in tech abides by embargoes any more. If it is Gazelle, might as well discuss since it is all over the tech blogs already. - Keith Beucler
As they keep it under the blanket till now! It should be software only thingy! speculations about xbox, zune phone etc are free to leave! - Amir
It's not Gazelle. At least I don't think so, because I have no clue what Gazelle is. I'm off to find out. - Robert Scoble
Ahh, nope, what I was thinking of is not Gazelle. But now that I see the rumors I wonder if Microsoft has more than one major announcement on Monday? - Robert Scoble
My Guess: They enabled Live Mesh Web Desktop to run applications, So in future all applications are going to be hosted in Live Mesh - Amir
maybe i want use chrome all day,,just for internet surfing - qian
Hey Robert, on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being an announcement that version 8.1 of IE includes a better spell-checker, and 10 being that Windows 8 is coming out in 2010 and is free, how many out of 10 is the announcement going to be in terms of having an impact? - Mark
btw I have had this single chrome window open for about a week, and because each tab has its own process I don't get memory leaks like with firefox. - Mark
Does unmodded, unaddon'd firefox leak? - Matthew DeVries
Not sure to be honest - Mark
So there could be your difference. - Matthew DeVries
Mark: that's hard to judge. I'd say 6.9 based on how you framed it. - Robert Scoble
Is this something that will go over well on Wall Street? - Michael Fidler
Well, today Microsoft announced the promotion of Steven Sinofsky to president of the Windows Division. - imabonehead
Robert ur (face) a hit today in the news outlets: http://lifehacker.com/5310444... - polou/indigo_bow
I hope Google comes up with a great OS. I have tried any different Linux versions on my netbook but have never found the perfect one. Looks like they have connected the right partners as well so I am very excited. 9 0ut 10 for me. This could change everything - Asgeir
TechCrunch on Scoblelizer's drumroll: "Office In Cloud Comes Monday" http://bit.ly/18sKUe - JimmyJet
it will be a sigh of release for people come to fear those massive, massive office purchase/downloads. still a pain for when you travel and have no access online though... - Terry O'Fee
While Google's forays in the OS and office productivity arenas are great for consumer choice, are they playing w/ fire? Google's core revenue stream is search, which has a much lower switching cost than any of MS's multiple revenue streams: Client, Office, Server. It seems like the two are pitching for a protracted fight that could be costly to both. But in a battle of attrition, it seems to me that Google could lose $ faster than MS. - lingb
Windows ME Ultimate? - Michael Funk
Well, it's Monday, what is the announcement about? - SuezanneC Baskerville

Internet Explorer 8 is 6,000x better than IE6, but it still bugs me. Google Chrome is the future. Here's why:
1. Google Chrome is way faster. - Robert Scoble
2. Google Chrome is a rethink. IE8 is a bug fix. - Robert Scoble
3. Google Chrome has one box. IE 8 has two. - Robert Scoble
Google Chrome is very light weight (including the UI) - Vaibhav
4. Google Chrome works better with Google Reader and other AJAX sites. - Robert Scoble
5. IE8 has too many menus and icons. Gives a real cluttered feel. - Robert Scoble
IE's been a glorified bug fix since MS relabeled it from Mosaic, Robert - no secret there. :) I'm loving Chrome. - teleken
WebKit is a really good rendering engine. I've always secretly wished IE8 would use WebKit as their rendering engine and scrap IE rendering, and somehow incorporate ActiveX and all of the IE features into it, since WebKit is open-source, not tied to a specific competitor (as opposed to Gecko and Firefox) and is fast and stable. – Have to agree about Google Chrome as well. It's a great browser. As much as I love Safari, I wish Chrome would come to Mac sooner :) - Mark Bao
6. Google Chrome's search integration is magic. Start typing something and it figures out what you want. IE8 waits for you to finish, then brings up a boring web page. - Robert Scoble
Any others? - Robert Scoble
When it finally works on a Mac, perhaps I'll believe you ;) - Jeff
If it didn't bug someone it wouldn't still be Internet Explorer. - Josh Sharp
Looks like WebKit is the future, all mobile browsers have started using it. - Vaibhav
Google Chrome and FLASH don't get along! - paul mooney
Now I just wish Chrome worked better with Flash, or Flash worked better with Chrome. - Dennis Jackson
Google Chrome is focused on internet. IE seems to mix to much other junk in - Mike Scott
By the way, I wrote this whole item in IE8 running on Windows 7. If you are still going to use IE, please do get IE8. It is much better than previous versions. - Robert Scoble
Not a big fan of IE or Chrome... I'll stick with FireFox. - Steven Sanders
Google Chrome is slick...but I still like the simplicity of FireFox. - Charlie Flowers
I love Google Chrome, I just wish the addon's started rolling out. - Michael Fidler
Because the browser is a commodity... Connecting (correction - Deep Integration) with Google's cloud based services is the secret sauce. - Brian Roy
Charlie: simplicity of Firefox? You've gotta be kidding, right? I love Firefox because of its complexity! (Plugins keep me there a lot of the time). - Robert Scoble
I still need to play with Chrome in order to form an educated opinion. I'm just too hung up on Firefox still. :P - Korey
Timely thread. I literally installed Google Chrome on my home computer within the last half hour (hey, I'm slow at these things - I'm not trendy). Just poking around a bit now, liking the speed. StumbleUpon support is an issue, but I'm reading up on it and other stuff. Just read Sarah Perez's post on privacy. - Ontario Emperor
I h ave never been a fan of ActiveX. The fact that several websites still rely on it versus better technologies irks me and I refuse to use them. - Jason Shultz from twhirl

Paul: Google Chrome gets along fine with Flash here. What are you experiencing? - Robert Scoble
Yeah, I have to admit, IE8 is a pretty good browser, relatively speaking (relative to IE7 and IE6.) Renders my pages a ton better than previous versions. - Mark Bao
Flash slows down Chrome for me pretty significantly, sometimes to where it's not even usable. Maybe it's just my computer. - Dennis Jackson
How is IE6 a basis for comparison to anything anymore? Totally agree about Chrome. - Bob Starr
loved chrome until I found out it wasn't compatible with my Roboform. I'm lazy and not too security conscious. - BEX
IE 8 was supposed to be more compliant with standards, but it breaks a lot of websites which work in IE7, FF, Chrome. (Scratching my head) - Vaibhav
Amen on the 'IE mixing other junk in' thought. I hate typing a hostname into it & it tries to hit a UNC or whatever the heck it's doing... - Steven Byrnes
Chrome has a whole list of niggling problems and has had since day one -- they just never seem to get fixed. I like the speed and simplicity but Chrome will become the next IE unless Google starts paying attention to detail. - Brian Sullivan
Chrome lets you create 'desktop applications' that don't get lost in all of those tabs and don't waste space with the address bar! - Jon Issler
I use Chrome from time to time, but it just feels wrong when I do, I think I'll be sticking with Firefox. - Randy
I am with Vaibhav on "webkit is the future as well" - Peter Finn
Val: Privacy is dead. I really don't care. - Robert Scoble
Chrome's biggest shortcomings right now are password security and the lack of plugins/extensions... Have to give Firefox a nod for having those two nailed! - Jon Issler
I think Chrome is Google's paid service platform... http://www.johnworthington.me/... - Johnny Worthington
Google Chrome is like FireFox back when it was Phoenix: Sleek, sexy and satisfying. Beta 2 adds autocomplete, profiles and a Greasemonkey style scripting. - John Rubier
Chrome has built in Task Manager.... anyone? ..... alright, never mind. - Vaibhav
@Dennis check your fans. If your on a laptop the fans and/or exhaust may be blocked with dust. that happened to me on my laptop, any flash video slowed my laptop down. realized one day (after reinstalling windows and still having the problem) that my fans had a lot of dust. used compressed air to clean them out, problem solved. happy laptop! - Jason Shultz from twhirl
One thing I know I liked about Chrome: The web-comic! http://tiny.cc/9Ck9L - Korey
I'm amazed at how many flash/chrome issues there are. Ive never had any? - Mike Scott
Looking forward to chrome coming out for the mac - Kevin Whalen
I still see that firefox is the future! unless google chrome will be a 100% organic software http://snipr.com/9u3ld - Mark Guadalupe
I love firefox and plug-ins, but does Chrome need plug-ins? I thought their deal was to run current and next-gen online applications better, which will likely preclude the need for the plug-ins we firefox users can't live without now. - Bill Garrett
Robert, I really like Chrome too. The universal address/search/history bar is the future of browsing. There are only a small % of sites that do not work with Chrome... usually old school corporations, such as ones that I have to pay bills online at. Grr. Works 99.8% of the time for me otherwise. - Brian
I just installed the Windows 7 beta. I fired up IE 8 and it didn't correctly render a nonprofit's Web site I administer as a volunteer (www.spauldingcenter.org). IE 8 didn't correctly render some of the CSS. I installed Chrome and Chrome got it right. IE 8 is obviously not yet ready for release. - Rod Bauer from twhirl
I love Chrome and it is my default browser now. In fact all my flash problems in Firefox and IE went away in Chrome (video paused many times during playback, audio kept going). They are both memory hoars. Maybe a problem with too much Flash on websites? The lack of plugin support is very troubling. - Chris Mayer
I'm keen for getting mac version of chrome too, though its going to be interesting to see how they're gonna handle interface - Mike Scott from IM
Re: 6. The search bar autofill? Err FF has that too for recently visited sites. If you get an Add-On it'll do the potential sites too. - Adam
Google Chrome may be nice, but there was an "Epic Fail" on my system when Chrome decided that it was the default browser (out of four browsers) and would not directly allow me to un-check the Default-Browser checkbox. It was quickly removed. - Robert Miller
I don't care about Internet Explorer any more. I switched to Firefox + Foxmarks, and solved a nagging problem - synchronization of bookmarks across multiple Windows *and* OS X machines - that the 'softies *still* haven't managed to solve, despite wasting a few developer-centuries on Live Mesh. - Pat Rice
Love Chrome. Use it whenever I can. It does have problems with some sites, and I'm always having problems with flash crashing in it. - cjmart
Kind of ironic that Chrome and Firefox and both performing much better for me under Windows 7. The beta Chrome release is really sweet. - Charlie Anzman
@Pat: I use live mesh to sync my bookmarks between machines all the time. Add your favorites folder to mesh and you are good to go. Mesh for mac is available too. - Chris Johnson
Google Chrome doesn't know what's RSS!!! FAIL - carrotmadman6
I feel like people are debating the relative merits of tn3270 emulators... - Brian Roy
I like the speed/lightness of Chrome, however i dont think it will be big anytime soon with anyone other than techies. Doesnt run many addins/plugins etc... Unlikely any enterprise will adopt it either. Its a great reference app. - Chris Johnson
Chrome certainly is clean and renders fast, but until the experience can be customized via extensions like Firefox, there is no one way I can make it my primary. I just loaded Win. 7 on my laptop and the only thing I ported over from any of my other machines was my FEBE. - George Rogers
Important point for me is that Chrome opens more of the monitor for the content on the page, not for toolbars that i do not need while browsing a page. no loss of functionality without the toolbar. - Jeff DiStanlo
I wonder how many people even know what tn3270 is used for :) I know I do all too well. - Patrick Allmond
+++ on this. FoxMarks is awesome. Just wish FoxMarks had an iPhone browser sync also :( - Patrick Allmond
Any Flock 2.0 users here? If Chrome comes out for the Mac, I may take a look as well - but Firefox/Flock has been great for me for now. - Erich Miller
@Robert: Maybe simplicity wasn't the right word..."ease of use" might be a better term. I think that FF's layout is not as radically different from the browsers I grew up with (IE & Netscape), as Chrome seems to be...maybe that's why I find it simpler to use. Having said that, Chrome is by no means complex, just not as intuitive as FF. As you mentioned, the plug-ins add to the ease of use. It seems you can get a FireFox plug-in for anything. - Charlie Flowers
BTW, have you tried FF's AutoPager plug-in. That thing is amazing! It "automatically loads the next page of a site inline when you reach the end of the current page for infinite scrolling of content"...it's perfect for things like Twitter, Google, and yes it works for FriendFeed too. :D - Charlie Flowers
I'm using Flock 2.0 on both Mac and Windows. I've uninstalled Chrome -- didn't care for it much since Flock does everything I need it to. - Victor Solanoy
:hits the Googles to figure out what the Flock you guys are talking about: - teleken
IE8 (and Firefox) offer a lot of tools to supplement your browsing experience. Chrome just gets out of the way. I'm not sure one or the other is a fundamentally superior approach. - Toph Tucker
Installed Flock for all of 5 minutes. Sticking with Chrome, thanks. - teleken
ctrl+t takes forever on IE8, and for what? A blank tab. I like Chrome's approach - Andrew Smith
Firefox's is simple and extendable. Firefox' strength comes from its pluggability and ease of developing new plugins. Chrome needs to beat that. - Angsuman Chakraborty
Chrome needs to support Linux before it can even think of replacing Firefox. Chromium port of Chrome on Linux isn't very stable. - Angsuman Chakraborty
firefox plugins are the new activeX. there's too much functionality i use for me to shift *now*. i *do* like chrome, though. - moogs
I like moving tabs into new windows, but does crashes alot w/ Flash - Da
7. If one tab crashes, all the other tabs are unaffected. Let's see ANY other browser do that. - Nathan Chase
i think i'll stick with firefox. so much more you can do with it.. - Terry O'Fee
Chrome is fast (unlike IE), has a very minimal UI (also unlike IE), and you can move tabs to other windows. I have never been able to get Firefox to open new tabs next to the tab they're opened from, instead of at the far right, plus I don't really care about extensions. Plus, I've never had any issues with Flash. The only problem is that my school email won't work in Chrome (but that's minor). Chrome wins for me. - imperator3733 from twhirl
Robert - how is the performance of IE8 compared to Chrome and Firefox? Personally, I'd be using Chrome if I had my add-ons and greasemonkey scripts. I love Chrome's mult-tasking / memory management - very nice - Susan Beebe
@Imperator, Firefox's UI can be slimmed down, and you can fix the tab issue with Tab Mix Plus. Also, Firefox 3.1 is faster than Chrome. - Tanath
how bout: Chrome is CSS compliant? IE8 isn't, I know this by experience - Duncan Riley
@Nathan -- as far as I know, IE8 separated tabs into different processes first.... - Toph Tucker
I think FriendFeed should put a comment button at the bottom of the comments... that said, Opera is the fastest, but it has a few shortcomings. I use FireFox or Chrome depending on what PC I'm at. Some sites only work in IE. - Gus
Google Chrome uses your screen real estate more efficiently - Aad 't Hart
Chrome focuses on the web and not on the browser and that's what a browser's supposed to do. - Rohit
May be when there are basic extensions available for Chrome then it will be fair to compare with Firefox. For now, I don't see Chrome that useful, even though it's clean, a bit faster and provides more screen space. After a couple of days of using Chrome, I switched to Firefox as I felt less productive without the powerful extensions in Firefox. - Amar Shah
When Chrome has an extension like Better GReader, TabMixPlus, and NoScript, then I'll switch, but FF has everything I need with the extensions. NoScript is about the ONLY addon I absolutely need to use for security of my computer. - Ⓐ ☠ slayerboy ☠ Ⓐ
You can install extensions on the Chromium Builds! Go for it! - Will Higgins™
love chrome as much as the next guy, but it does crash sometimes over simplest things, like downloading sth from gmail or greader. & it's not just one tab that goes - it all goes & only one comes back, either gmail or greader... - siggimus
Chrome also crashes when importing Firefox Bookmarks, which makes it awkward to switch. But yeah, I would still use Firefox over IE 8. - Todd Brunner from twhirl
my mother understands the search-thingy-box in chrome. - Svensonsan
@scobleizer I think this would have made a good blog post. Would have been easier to read you view points. The discussion could then have happened on friendfeed. Too many comments to read properly - Sidharth Dassani
Chrome and WebKit are the future - just hope there's still room for Firefox. Remember how Firefox became Firefox? - Mona Nomura from fftogo
I agree. Chrome focuses on opening fast, which is critical for impatient people like me. Firefox and IE are way too slow. - Richard Crocker
WebKit can do CSS3 gradients, and I have only seen it in WordPress for creating actual images with gradients. Chrome is the future indeed! Extensions? heh, I use javascript bookmarklets to do my bidding! Chromes bookmark manager is more powerful than I expected. Passwords can be imported from FF but there is no backup option yet. - Web20Critic
Chrome is really promising, but still incomplete imo. Being a web developer, I have deep connections with firefox plug-ins like FireBug (with Yslow), dev. toolbar and a couple more. But looking at the future, I think the final round of the browser wars will be between Safari and Chrome (ofc IE will still have at least 50% market) because Firefox gets slower and more agonizing with every new release, and lacks the support Apple and Google offers for Safari/Chrome - Onur Cengiz
If chrome crashes, report it! Make a note of what you were doing and blog it, microshare it, post it on the chromium blog etc. This way all of us can help make it work for us! Nice thread for tech support, Mr Scoble! - Web20Critic
7. Because Chrome has a new and improved version every week/month/quarter (depending upon the distribution channel) whereas IE version comes once in 3 years. - Varun Mahajan
Robert: How did you get IE8 on Windows 7??? The installer refused to run when i tried. - Roberto Bonini
Roberto: it came with Windows 7. Or so I thought. I already had it loaded on this machine before I upgraded. - Robert Scoble
Robert Scoble
This is my first Windows 7 message. Everything on my main computer upgraded properly. This is a winner.
Windows 7 does sound good. I might give it a go next weekend. - jon
I installed it on my mac, dont know why though - Simon Wicks
Can you say anything about hardware specs, Robert? I don't know if MS is playing the NDA game with the beta release. - teleken
Have you tried mouse hovering over the task bar in the bottom right (there's a small rectangle with no label) - does a nice 'show desktop' effect. Pretty cool so far eh? - David Ing
Happy too.. so far so good... - Aad 't Hart
I wanted XP rather than Vista, I really did. Now there's some slim hope?! - Bernard (ben) Tremblay
I love Windows 7 on my old hardware! Just posted a review on my blog... :) - carrotmadman6
teleken: if Vista works on it Windows 7 will work better. - Robert Scoble
David: that's cool! - Robert Scoble
Why does Robert get so impressed by every new technology ? - Sidharth Dassani
Robert: Understood. Now the question is whether I drop it in Parallels on the MacBook, or go for broke/masochism and see how the Inspiron Mini handles it. ;) There's the real acid test for a new Windows OS. - teleken
teleken, I have it on Fusion and on my netbook. Both work amazingly well. The only problem with using it on Parallels/Fusion is that you will not get Aero and hence won't get all the nifty Aero-dependent desktop features like Desktop preview, the preview panels etc. - Kamath (नमः)
What are the minimum memory reqs on it? - Jason Wong
Is it a winner because it actually installed correctly, or because you're impressed with the new feature set... - Shay Frendt
Also, try left-clicking on a taskbar item and then dragging upward. - Akiva Moskovitz
Shay: both. - Robert Scoble
Looking forward to the release after posts like this. Read that idle W7 uses appr. 600-650 MB RAM. Anyone confirm those numbers? - Migger
The real killer feature for Windows 7 would be a little dialog box at the beginning of the upgrade process that simply says "If you proceed with this upgrade, you will lose N days of productivity to trying to troubleshoot drivers, software incompatibilities, and reinstallation of incompatible programs; to re-learning simple UI tasks; and to experimenting with superficial cosmetic changes, all for marginal UX and performance gains . Do you want to continue? Yes / No" - Ken Sheppardson
Jason: I don't know what the hardware requirements are but it uses fewer resources than Vista. So, just go with the hardware requirements for Vista. - Robert Scoble
I've had Windows 7 running with just 128mb RAM in a VM - Excellent memory management. - Nigel Kitchen
Tips for VMWare Fusion install http://friendfeed.com/e... - michael silverton
Will Windows 7 fit on an 8GB netbook SSD? - Ken Sheppardson
teleken: My MacBook is running it fine, no problems so far, although I've only really been playing around with settings and stuff, not installed any big software to try with it. I used VM Ware to do it, Parallels always gave me problems so i switched. - Simon Wicks
Since I have both Vista & Ubuntu I think I can wait until all you early adopters work out the bugs. :D Seriously, I will wait until it is forced upon me when I buy another computer. That should be about 3 years from now. - MarkCarras
REALLY tempted to run the beta on my laptop...a bit nervous to run any beta on my main rig but i think it wouldn't be so bad on my laptop....hmmmmmmm - Live4Emma (L4S)
dual booting 7 with vista and 7 is running so much faster than vista. i'm happy that they cut down the min. req. - Aaron Eaton
Stay away from AVG under Windows 7...triggers a heinous BSOD in tdx.sys... - Mike Dove
I have been unable to download the Windows 7 image from Microsoft's site. I think they're a bit overloaded at the moment! - John Bellone
John, have you tried since Saturday? My download worked like a champ Saturday afternoon. Also Brandon LeBlanc @ Microsoft is reporting that extra capacity was added and the download site has been working smoothly since Saturday AM. Also they have removed the 2.5 million limit on the number of beta testers -- as long as you get it before January 24, you can get a product key: http://windowsteamblog.com/blogs... - Karim
Upgraded main computer? will MS support upgrade from Beta to RTM? - Vaibhav
I installed Windows 7 64-bit and Chrome doesn't work at all. GRR. - Phil G
I like the things they have done with respect to perf and UI changes, but this is what Vista should have been in the first place and I hope the upgrade from Vista to 7 is cheaper given the small number of differences between the two. - Vaibhav
Whoops, someone figured out how to fix it: http://www.blogsdna.com/1900... - Phil G
I got it here on my HP Mini 1000. Running good so far... not doing much though - Bwana ☠
Phil, have you run the compatibility wizard on it? - Akiva Moskovitz
@Mike Dove I have 7 x64 with AVG installed. I don't have any problems with it. - Vaibhav
Akiva - nope but that command line switch I just linked to did the trick. - Phil G
@Vaibhav Perhaps you are getting lucky. I believe I was triggering it with the Outlook Email scanner portion of AVG, it may be that for normal operation it is fine. - Mike Dove
Karim, What link did you use? MIcrosoft's site seems so slow. - John Bellone
When attempting to download Windows 7 I click "Download Now" and nothing happens. - John Bellone
Windows Weekly mentioned that there's quite a nasty MP3 truncating bug in the beta. If you value your music collections, it's probably best to avoid using WMP. Apparently there's a hot fix available. - Paul Grav
@Paul it was the first thing I did after installing Win7 and Windows Media Player is working just fine with no damage to the mp3's that I have been able to tell yet - Steven Hodson
@Paul same here. It works fine after hotfix - Vaibhav
Awesome news.... I hope MS Windows 7 is a winner...that would be great! - Susan Beebe
Yep, Windows 7 went pretty smooth so far; tackling my main home/Windows Media Center device now. +1 for sex life as well. - Wade Dorrell
Whats the timeline before it expires on you? how painless was the upgrade? - Stephen Smyth
Stephen: I think it's expires in August - Vaibhav
I wrote about my initial install experience on The Inquisitr (http://www.inquisitr.com/14951...) with some follow Snapshot posts at WinExtra .. I'm liking this release of Windows - Steven Hodson
Stephen, it expires in August which means a Beta 2 or RC1 in July (or a hotfix to extend the death date). - Akiva Moskovitz
Been running Windows 7 for about a week. Loving it! - David Andrzejewski
A friend just loaded Win7, she is upset that she can't find a way to make it Classic UI. It will be a long long time before I upgrade in that case. - Tina Clarke
I've heard someone saying he was expecting something new in Windows 7 and literally got the same Vista OS, just a little faster. Don't you think Microsoft is re-selling the same system (only a bit improved) instead of giving us a new one? - Nir Ben Yona
I think I'll be waiting for the BETA-tag to go away. I have tried vista and xp in beta and I regret it, so..this time I'll wait for the FULL and not beta version of Windows 7. - Qbat
In case anyone cares, I threw Windows 7 on a late 2006 Compaq V6600 laptop with a Turion 1.8GHZ processor. This was one of those Vista capable machines. It was running XP (it never had Vista on it) and Windows 7 runs better than XP did. It has 2GB RAM. It's not a low powered laptop nor is the CPU/chipset that old but it's nice to see Windows 7 run so smoothly on it. Windows 7 installed... more... - Dr. Apps from twhirl
John - if you are using the technet download link (the one with the serial number) , it will try to invoke a downloader app which only works in IE. If you find one of the many blogs with the direct download link, those should work with any browser. - Phil G
Previously as a test, I upgrade installed the Windows 7 6801 beta on a Vista 32 machine that was heavily used (over 1400 installed applications) and was shocked to see it that not only did everything still work (Zonealarm, LogMeIn, MICROSOFT FINGERPRINT READER!), but it was MUCH snappier and startup and shutdown was significantly better. Not that I would ever recommend an upgrade... more... - Dr. Apps from twhirl
Great to hear the upgrade worked. I hate when computers fail... - Mitchell Tsai
Failed to mention that the upgrade install on the Vista 32 box w/ 1400+ apps took at least 3 hours. I can't remember exactly how long. But it took forever, which was expected... - Dr. Apps from twhirl
Like it so far. Install was a bit difficult, but thats probably my fault (dual boot machine). Snappier than Vista, cleaner than Vista. Uses about 20% less RAM on my machine. - Chad Albert
Dr Apps mine took hours too. I ran it while I slept. - Robert Scoble
Just tried streaming h.264 video to a xbox as an extender. It works !! - Olivier Castets
Fresh install took me < 30mins to login prompt. Upgrades take a lot longer. - Chris Johnson
Clean install to Lenovo 510 went very smooth. Loading some apps shortly, but first impression is that it is noticeably snappy. http://www.flickr.com/photos... - George Rogers
John, I am using the regular Technet link: http://bit.ly/NJJb If you're seeing "Download Now" I assume you have gotten past the Live ID logon, profile update and gotten your Product key? The download uses an ActiveX control or Java applet download manager. Assuming you are on Windows :-) try your download in IE, and allow the ActiveX control to install. - Karim
I have Windows 7 beta running on an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Processor 4000+ with 2 Gig of Ram and it runs better then Vista Home Premium did. The only issue is I can not get my Netgear SC101 NAS box to recognize. Does anyone have any ideas? - Rob Cairns
"windows", "winner" - is this an example of #15, say something outrageous ;-) - Neil Saunders
Peter Simard: That's awesome! I'm sure you backed up first, but were quite relieved it all went well. :) Rob Cairns: I didn't even know the SC101 worked with Vista in the first place... I gave up on that thing so long ago. That is probably the only piece of hardware I've ever regretted buying. Though it sounds like you've had a good experience with it if you're still using it. I'd say wait a few days and see if anybody comes up with a solution. I took a cursory glance and didn't find any info... - Dr. Apps from twhirl
Robert - Using it since late yesterday. On two boxes, more stable than the original final releases of Windows NT and/or Windows 2000. More drivers supported up front than in Vista. Think MS learned something and the download limit drop will bring a lot of embedded techies. It's a win. - Charlie Anzman
Thanks for being on the bleeding edge, just about to load the Windows 7 beta myself.. Good to know it upgraded properly for you. - TechMama Beth Blecherman
I'm going to download it tonight Can't wait! - Michael Fidler
It was a long upgrade for me... but overall I like it. - Jason Womick
Been very happy with Windows 7 so far. Many subtle improvements add up to a much better product than Vista. - Jim Bednarz
I am happy with Windows 7. Fresh install was effortless, but after the install and adding all possible board drivers, four "System Interrupts" entries remain yellow. At least the LAN connectors worked immediately. - Robert Miller
I put win7 on a Toshiba Satellite a65 from 2003 and it works better than xp did - Todd Loren Sinclair
Stephen : The upgrade was painless 90 minutes or so and a couple of reboots later. The only issue I had as previously mentioned was my Netgear Sc 101 issue - it did work on Vista. It expires in August - Rob Cairns

If you had $3,000 in your pocket, which would you buy? Canon 5D MKII or Apple 17-inch MacBookPro. Discuss here:

Canon camera. I need a great camera more than a Mac - Keith - @tsudo
5d Mk II - Scott Loftesness
5D MKII, since I've already got a Mac Pro. ;) - Cory OBrien
Have a Nikon D300 and my old MBP is on the fritz, so this woud be a slam dunk for me - Gregg Gallagher
17 inch MBP because I love it. Then I'd buy a cheap 40D. I get more use out of a laptop than I do a camera. - Michael Yurechko
Apple 17-inch MacBookPro with a matte screen. - Arturo Puente
People who get a good cannon keep them forever, I go through a macbook every few years - Michael Struening
Macbook Pro. Only because I'm a Nikon fan. D300 is definitely my choice of camera ;) - Tamar Weinberg

Would have to be the MacBookPro - Jason Townsend
The Canon. A solid peice of hardware and I'm after a camera - Mo Kargas
5D MKII of course. - Jeremy Franklin
The Canon. I'd have so much more fun with a zippy camera than a Big Mac. - Mike Neumann
Probably the computer. I'm happy with the first gen 5D I'm about to buy and as awesome as the camera is, the MBP doesn't need another $5K in lenses. - Derrick
Neither, you need at least twice that for glass & equipment to get the "rig" you should want for a Canon MKII - sorry, 3K isn't enough for that toy; and spending 3K on disposable technology (Mac equipment) isn't a wise investment. - Enrique Gutierrez
MBP....i miss my macs! - Brian Bufalo
5D MKII hands down. I can hold onto the memory cards until I get to a desktop :) - Austin
Without question: 5D mark II - Rodney L.

Canon, without a doubt. - Brad Butner
Definitely the MacBook Pro...but then again I'm not a photographer. - Charlie Flowers
Canon - Tyler (Chacha) from IM
Neither, I'd use it to buy food for a year. - Will Higgins™
Considering I can make quicker cash with my Photography work I would say the Canon 5D MKII and then I would buy the Apple 17 inch MacBook Pro with some of my earnings! - Patrick Greer

Canon 5D MKII since I already have the 15" MBP. - Alan Le
I don't need either one--but I think the Canon would have much better resale value--so given the choices: Canon. - Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)
Canon 5D MKII - for sure! - I really want one.... :( - Brad
MBP - not a photographer - Matt Faulkner
A 50D and a fast lens. ;-) - D. Lambert
I've already got the 15" unibody so I'd go for the 5Dmkii - Sparky
If I didn't have a laptop, then I would get the 17" MBP. If I already had a lappy, then get the camera... - William Sellers
Well, I recently moved from a 30D to a 5DMII because it was a huge upgrade for my "system". With a 2 year old Macbook Pro still serving me well for my needs, it's an easy decision. Additionally, I can't see using a 17" notebook over a 15 for portability sake, I'd just as well get an iMac and keep using my Macbook Pro for mobile use. - Ryan
Aren't you in Vegas? I think there are a few other options in front of you.. - LA Snark
5D!! - Wil
The camera. I have a new macbook already. - Jim Williams

The camera! I already have the 15" MBpro. 17" is just too big. - Sherry Main
My 1 yr-old MacBook doesn't thrill me; it sits on the desk unused, and I just couldn't pay more than $200 for a camera, unless I was dreadfully rich. - MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
5DMKII - sell some images on istockphoto, and then buy an MSI Wind and install OSX. It is faster than my 15" MBP! - Darren Mak
Definitely the 5D MkII - Christopher Chan
$3,000 worth of NOODLZ - Bwana ☠
MBP. I just got a brand new camera. - Mistletoe Glen
100 shares of CRM ;D - barl0w

MacBook Pro, but I would need another $1200 for the 8GB of RAM. - Shawn Hickman
5D MKII. Even though I already have one. - Kathleen McGivney
Neither. Maybe 3 coins :). I have a Macbook Pro which I don't use often comparing to my PC. I am not into the consumer electronic stuff, only got a digital cam last year :). - dexin
Canon. Can't believe Apple ditched the matte screen on the 17" - FCP users and photographers don't want a glossy screen - the idea of the 17" is the ability to use it out in the field for photo/video editing. - Peter Clayton
So limiting, Robert! If I could pick whatever I wanted, I'd get one of those sweet Asus multi-touch netbooks coming out - and then use the rest to buy Yahoo! stock. :P - Shawn Farner
MB 13'' and the external cinema display. MBP17 is huge to carry out - Jean-Charles VERDIE
canon - jtothea
17" MBP FTW! You should create a poll on SocialToo.com Robert, then we can see graphed results! - Joseph
Craigslist in Cincinnati - 5D for 1200: http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/ele... - D. Lambert
Wow, what a great argument! 82 comments in 17 minutes! - Robert Scoble
MacBook Pro. I really, really, really want a new laptop even though my current MacBook works just fine. - Nation Hahn
Camera. Droooooooooool. - Alix Whitmire
Well part of it would have to go towards fixing my car, http://preview.tinyurl.com/9dz2kz. Then the rest would go towards buying a second camera body to be my main and at least one lens if not two. Then the rest would go towards bills. - Mathew™ one of a kind
Robert: Apple products plus awesome SLR cameras...response is a given :) - Mo Kargas
the camera is nice - especially all the HD video. friend of mine in the movie post-production business reckons this sort of Camera will KILL the movie camera business in a few years time. especially at the low-budget movie (<$30 million) of the movie business. RED already making big inroads. much cheaper than an ARRI. - Scot Mcphee
The MK II as I already have the MBP 17 inch...older but it works. - Semipro
Canon 5D is the winner for me. Great digital photography is the gift that keeps on giving.... ;-) - John Uppendahl
Well.... Given that I have 4 PC desktops, 2 PC laptops, and 1 iMac, all of which are operational and regularly used, AND that I suck at photography, I'm going for what's behind door #3: A whopping big HDTV -- which will get hooked up to the living room PC, of course. ;-) - Joanmarie
17" Mac. Already have a camera. . . - Scott Whitney
Nikon D3 - Bill Sanders
Macbook Pro for me. Would be my first Mac. - Jim Bednarz
Nikon D3 - ThePicMan
MacBook Pro. Don't need such a super-duper crazy camera. Not a real photographer. But a very real Mac geek. - Louis Gray
5D for sure! - Daniel Pourasghar
I'd go the MacBook - but I'd also load it up with the full 8gb of RAM I see as an option (and not many people mentioning). Sadly, a nice 17" MBP setup it just over NZ$10k :( - Mark Derricutt
MacBook Pro. Hands down. I'm a computer engineer, not a photographer. - Logan Leger
well since I've already got a Canon 5D Mark II... hmmmm... - Thomas Hawk
I'll buy neither. What I would rather do is try to buy one share of BRK-B if it gets to that price. :) - imabonehead
The 17" Mac Book Pro, I already have a 5D MkII ;-) - Jeff P. Henderson
I'd buy the camera, I have always loved photography and wanted to learn. - R. Ferguson
The Canon, all the way man!! - Finding The View
Apple! I don't like the fact of the hd video recorder on the 5D and I want the Sony alpha! - Brandy Lea
Canon. 15" MBP is the largest I'll go. - ronin
I would take the cash and build an ultimate gaming PC !!! :D - ralphsaunders
When you buy an inexpensive camera, you really sacrifice quality, and that lack of quality endures (you want to keep your photos forever, right?). When you buy an inexpensive computer, that's not the case (I don't need a unibody case :) - David Andrzejewski
Canon 5D - easy answer! - Susan Beebe
Ouch, this one hurts. I suppose I can't opt for a Nikon equivalent to the Canon? If this is the choice, I'd opt for the MacBook Pro. But if I had 3K, I'd buy myself the Nikon D300 - Karoli
The Canon. A 17" laptop is too big unless you plan to use it as a desktop. - Hartley Spurlock
Mac for sure.I have a first generation Macbook and I need a new one. Kaya Singer - Kaya
I'd pay off my credit card. For all that stuff I, like, already bought. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
the Macbook pro but only because I need to upgrade my computer. - Anna Lynn M.
the Camera for sure - Tai
5d Mark II - Jauder Ho
None - a super-gaming rig. :) - carrotmadman6
Definitely a Canon 5D. - Maria Colacurcio
5D Mark II - Hands down. - Seagate
I would save it until I had between $8-15K for a CO2 laser cutting machine. I like my macs small, and while full frame sounds nice, I know I'm not nearly hungry enough to go pro in photography, so 40D suits me just fine. - Jason Wehmhoener
That's a tough one because I have been wanting to get my first Mac (have to start somewhere, right?!) but am a hard core Canon fan/user. So if push came to shove, I would have to go with the Canon. - Laura Zickus
Mmm, CO2 lasers. - Mo Kargas
That would be either a trip to another continent or a Fujitsu LifeBook P1630, but it would not be either of the options in the question. I seriously cannot understand $3k for a camera, unless you're going to make that money back in a month or two WITH said camera. - MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
Neither, I would invest in the stock market. - DGentry
I'd prefer a D300, however no matter what brand I'd take the camera in a second over the MBP. Save up another $500 and get a Windows Notebook as well. - Kenton
The Canon 5D MKII for sure. Cameras bring me a lot more joy than flashy computers. Though a 17-inch MacBookPro would be nice to edit those new photos on too ;-) - Ian Holton from twhirl
Probably the Mac. I would never carry around a DSLR. Too big. - Rodfather
Neither. The new full frame format with HD Movies (wow! Woopee *rolls eyes*) is crap - only 3.9 FPS?! Who are they kidding?! - Adam
Seeing my Macbook Pro is 5 months old. I would buy neither...but I would buy a MacPro with more RAM. - Ryan
I take a cruise with Lindsay - big ass stateroom. - Tad
Neither, I'd get a Canon Rebel XTi and build a new gaming PC, anything left over would go toward the new home NOC - xero
I would take my lover to Italy :) - Maryam Scoble
The Canon 5D, I find the photographic process calming, a welcome diversion from the ones and zeros. - cornedbeefgents
Awwww :) - Mo Kargas
Nikon D700 - Rod Bauer from twhirl
There's one in every crowd. - Rod Bauer from twhirl
If I had the $3,000, Canon 5D and a larger donation here http://tinyurl.com/daniela Pros: it's more portable, takes better pictures, and connects to my more compact 15" Macbook Pro. Of course, it doesn't work with my Nikon lenses, so... - Lee Dale
Canon 5D MKII only cause I have a Macbook Pro. If I didnt it would be the Macbook. - Bob Maltais
Nah. Patrick's college fund. 5D Mark 2 or the Macbook isn't all that exciting. - Joshua Hayworth
cannon.I kill computers, so not worth spending 3 grand on one. Plus I have a (beat up) macbook pro already. - InPerpetualMotion(Gina k)
Photos shoot at 3.9 fps, video shoots at 30 fps. @AdamGiovane - Jim Bergman
The MacBook of course. - Rob Fahrni
mac - Vishy
5D, but I wish it had XLR audio. - Gus
the new MBP, without a doubt ... my current ones needs a refresh (I'm accepting donations btw) ;-) - Jeffrey Canton
Since I'll be getting the new MBP anyway, I'll take the 5D. BTW, is anyone keeping score? - Brad Kligerman
I would buy the Canon, but of course, I would need a MacBook Pro in order to edit/view the photos the way they were meant to be viewed. - Robert Peña
Blatant self-promotion, but if Robert used re-searchr.com it would keep score for us... I wrote it to suck down inline multiple choice selections so no ne would even have to leave ff - James Ostheimer
Robert, you're asking the question that's been pondering in my mind from some time (albeit it used to be with the 15" and Cinema display v. 5D/a900/D700 -cannot make my mind-). I want to be able to make a decision before March. I think I'll be going for the Mac, since I might relocate in part of the world where carrying an expensive piece of art around my neck might be more dangerous than here, in JPN. - Paul Papadimitriou
I'd go for a MBP, mine needs an upgrade and I just bought a 50D not long ago which is just fine for me. - Andrew Trinh from Nambu
I need cash! :) - Randy
Some of us are Nikon people. Some of us are not Mac people. I'll just take the 3 Gs. - Eric @ CSTechcast.com
Nikon D700 + 50mm 1.4 prime lens! - Guillaume Lemoine
More lenses. My camera is fine, and this Thinkpad is a good 'un. - Paula W
Seems like Apple design the 17-inch MacBookPro just can use in 3years.the battery can only use in 1000 times,1time per 1day,3years.But Canon 5D can take more beatuful pics for me,and can stand by me more than 3years.if i really have 3000dollers,i real do this.kick off 17-inch MacbookPro. - jedorstar from twhirl
Lenses, like Paula sez. - Rob Kramer
Buy half and half :) - Michael Forian
Wow, I came late to this convo. Well, for what it's worth at this point, I'd probably get the lappytop, sell my old MBP and then use THAT money to buy a cheaper camera. :D - Jon, the Chilled Beartato
Canon 5D MKII, no doubt. I have a 1.5 year old 15-inch MacBookPro which is still more than OK. Going from Canon 400D to a 5D MKII however would be a major upgrade. - Rutger Blom
Macbook I think. I have a 40D but REALLY want the 5D. Which do you think you could get your hands on first? - Andrew Smith
The 5D. The MacBookPro can wait. - Chris Nixon
5D, I have enough laptops as it is. - Amit Morson
The $2800 MBP becomes a lot more compelling when converted to 2080€. - Brad Kligerman
I'm a Nikon guy but the 5D MKII has me seriously considering a switch - Bryan Thatcher from twhirl
As I don't like Macs and into my photography the choice out of the two is simple. :-) But I've rather spend the money on say the Nikon D3 and if you gave me an extra grand or 2 then I'd go for the Nikon D3X. ;-) - Kol Tregaskes from twhirl
Without though, the Canon 5D MKII. First up, you don't want to trust another "first gen" Apple product. And with the unimpressive lineup yesterday, maybe the 15" laptops are coming out real soon now, with similar features, and all quirks ironed out - Colin Charles from twhirl
MAC!!! - Orli Yakuel
(Friendfeed needs a poll feature) - Jérôme Flipo
5D over the MAC Pro. - Robert Miller
MacBookPro - just bought myself a nice camera with a fracking big lens! - Joel Hammond-Turner
Canon! - Janet
Canon. I have a laptop and rarely use it - well not as a laptop. It sits on a desk as a permenant fixture. - Ian May
Canon 5D mk 2 :) - Joe Dawson
Camera, I never liked the 17". It's too heavy for a "portable" - Melissa dela Merced from twhirl
neither, a big ass HDTV :) - Terry O'Fee
17-inch macbookPro is way too big. so I would go for the camera. Problem is I would need to learn how to use it then... - Davide D'Incau
If you have good lenses to take advantage of the MKII (extra $3000 needed here), go for the camera! - Joao Pedro
I would buy a Apple 17-inch macbook of course.! I don't have an apple and I would really like one. I have a camera thats good enough for me. - Qbat
nor this neither that! i will send money to help people in Gaza or at least I'll send 1000 $. - خیزران kheyzaran
canon 5d mk ii based on the videos I've seen - i mean just look at these http://is.gd/cP6x - planetMitch
The Canon, surely. No use for a laptop that big. - Ryan Sholin
5D over here too - Simon Wicks
Macbook Pro 17! - Greg
The camera. Already have three computers but have no camera. - Martha
I am not pro enough to need the 5D, I am actually looking at a D60 or D90. But the 17 Macbook is something I can use :) - TheSleepyGeek
I'd buy the Nikon D700 - David Parmet from twhirl
neither - cash is still king - viki saigal
its the lens, not the body - spring for L glass - @jessewright
MacBookPro - Stewart Rogers
New MacBookPro 17". I would probably get more use out of it than the Canon. But my, oh my, ya'll, the Canon sure is sweet. - Matthew Freeman
I have the glass. I have the Mac, I'd get the 5DMKII - stretta from twhirl
5D - I don't need a macbook. I'm happy with my PC and laptop - they cover my my needs perfectly. - Roberto Bonini
Donate it to @armano. - Jim Mitchem
given my current status .. I am happy with my Canon XTi so I would go for the MacBook Pro. - Kapil
5D, but that's cuz I've been saving up for one. A new MBP would def. be on the list of future purchases (current computer is 3 years old) - Michael
Canon 5d Mk II, far more useful than the new laptop. More fun. One encourages you to sit around, the other encourages you to go out :-) - Richard A.
MacBookPro, Canon sux. (OK, relax, just kidding. I'm a Nikon guy. I have no Canon lenses.) - Trevor Carpenter
Canon!! - Ivy /composmentis from twhirl
I would buy the Mac, get a cheaper camera with the money I have left, and edit and enhance my videos using my Mac. - Shevonne
I'd go the Mac route. I'm looking to buy one anyway and I've already got a camera. Might not be as fancy as the Canon do-dad, but I'll manage. - James Ferguson
Wow 202 comments! How did I miss this thread? :) - AJ Batac
17 inch MCP - johnpiercy
The 17" MBP as my current 12" PB is on it's last legs and needs replacing - need rather than want for me - Sally Church
The Canon. I already have a 17" MacBook Pro. - Carmen - Happy 2010!
The Canon... even though I already have a 5D and actually need a new laptop - Shawn Duffy from twhirl
Macbookpro - Roger Kondrat
I'd say the MacBook... you can do more with it. - Dejim Juang
EOS 5D - Julien Guyard
Canon, since the MBP that I'd want would actually cost $5823. Not $3000. - Ben Hwang from twhirl
This would be much more enjoyable if there was some kind of poll widget along side comments. - Michael Leggett
The camera..I find apple laptops overpriced for what they offer. - Nick

The MacBookPro, I have a Canon 30d but I do not have a MacBook - Bob Gannon
I wouldn't want a 17'' monster of a MacBookPro and therefore would go for the Canon 5D MKII - Donald Townsend
Neither. Both are overpriced. If no other options; I'd go camera. - Wade Dorrell
5D, the 17-inch MacBook Pro is very big. Harder to find bags for it and its less portable. - seanb
bank it, put in matress, done need either of those things, we need smarter devices that tell us the likelyhood of use-longevitiy in them, "i'm a camera you bought last year, you used me 9 times, i collect dust, owner- please resist replacing me unless you really really really need to, and the data suggests you don't.." - Dan Rockwell from twhirl
Not enough to buy what I want with the Canon, and I wouldn't be caught dead spending $3000 on a laptop. What a waste! - Paul Puri
Neither. A $3000 laptop is not worth it just because of its branding. - Spencer
ohh.. I can't choose. I want both of them... But if i choose, first canon, second mac... İ have canon 40 d and 15'' mac book pro. And i don't like mac's new screen. It's like mirror... - devletsah
Spencer: as a recent PC to Mac switcher, it's more than brand. Much more. - Ryan
I'd buy a netbook for the other three members of my family and put the remaining $2000 toward bills or savings. :) - Steve Lowe
Agree with Aaron, love my 13" Macbook and really want the 5D MKII - Kyle
Definitely the Mac. - John Clifton
Is this thing still going? I can't remember if I replied to this yet, but I say it depends on what will benefit you the most. Robert, you are a photo-maniac. I know that you have a few cameras laying around the house, but I don't know how many Macs you have. You have to remember that a 17" laptop sounds great on paper, but I know that you do a lot of traveling as well, so it might now suite your means. Then again, I would never keep $3,000 dollars in my pocket ;) - Michael Forian
of course the mac - doesn´t matter what the second option is... - Dieter Schwarz
I would buy the Canon 5D MKII but being a Nikonian I would end up buying the MacBook Pro and feel no remorse :) - Carlos Lorenzo
MacBook Pro. I need a laptop really bad. - Nick Humphries
The camera. 17-inch laptops are fricking ridiculous. - Andru Edwards
camera and a box of junior mints - Morgan Haley

Forget the Mac, keep your current camera, and buy better lenses. - Michael Krigsman
17 inch laptop is useless in term of mobility so I would go with the Canon - Hadar Weiss
A Sony a900. :) - Jeff Jones
Neither. I'd start with the Bonobo Pro Ubuntu Laptop for under $2000 and use the $1000 to max it out. http://system76.com/product... - Internet Strategist
Impressive amount of comments here, this has to be the highest ever now right? - Joe Dawson
I'm sorry, can you repeat the question: did you say a "camera", a "computer" or a "shark with laser beams"? - Micah Wittman
save the money for tougher times. as much as I'd like the Canon, it's going to be just an expensive toy for me. and my three year old Inspiron works just fine for the most things I do on it. - Franci Penov from twhirl
5Dm2 because I already have the new MBP 15" 2.8Ghz. Mostly b/c the cam is more revolutionary than the 17", even though the 17" battery life is enticing. - Thomas Bøhm
Wow, 250 comments - OMG ...FF is really growing ...YEAH !!! - Susan Beebe
Yeah, this week has produced several >100 comment threads in my feed. - xero
Not the 5D, but some body+the best lenses, that actually lasts longer. Laptops are out of date in months and often die within 18, cameras and lenses last a lot longer - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
I would buy a Apple 17-inch MacBookPro, only cause I already have a SLR, so I dont need the Canon 5D MKII. - Colide81 (James)
I would not spend it, id rather invest 3000 dollars with 10 shares of google - Kyle Weller
then just buy lenses - you probably already have a computer that can do everything you need - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Exxon-Mobile. Oh wait, what was the question again? - Erik S
Neither- new hardware for the pending Win7 beta drop. :) - Randy Holloway from twhirl
both! - jortai
@Ryan I am a Mac user, have been for a while. It's just my opinion, but $2800 for a piece of hardware in which you can the same or better specs on a PC, is quite a bit of branding. - Spencer
Using the MacBook Pro 17 inch now (love it!)- and I am quite happy with my Canon Powershot G9, so I'll just take the cash and pay down some of my debt--thanks! - Kelly W.
Canon 5D MKII then buy the 15" MacBook Pro later. - John Wang
I would buy a new fast lens for my old 5D (around $1000) and save the rest. - Alexander Arsky
Nikon E90 *and* a 15" Macbook. :) I bend rules. - Daniel Miessler
Nikon E90 like Daniel :P - Molly, New Ears :P

is someone tabulating these answers? - Mistletoe Glen
Canon 5d MKII, i'm not a mac person so that was easy. - Squid
I've been back and forth on this since the 17" was announced. I am very likely to upgrade to the 5DMKII this year. But I want a more powerful laptop to work on the huge files it creates. Chicken? Egg? Confused. - Jeremy Brooks
Canon 5D MKII for sure. MBP 15 is still chugging along after 2 years. And the 5D is still doing great after 1 year, but I would really like the new 5D. - Johnny Sewell
5D Mark II , without a doubt! - americanm
Caonon 5D all the way - John Uppendahl
