Obama has amazing literary and political instincts. The puppy anecdote in yesterday's press conference, as silly and simple as it was, was very deft. Amidst all this serious economics he injected a personal note that gave people something to hang on to. It was a perfect grace note.

I told someone the other day that Obama writes his own speeches, and they were astonished. I figured I'd better fact-check, so I googled & found this. Vindicated! It would indeed be unrealistic to expect him to do absolutely ALL his writing, but the writing process described here is just so, so much more authentic and trustworthy than, say, the fact that Mark Salter wrote so much of McCain's "memoir."
