18 minutes that will change the lives of many people. No pressure ;)

So you're giving a $12,500 speech? Talk about pressure.

$12,500 for a professional speaker is nothing. Some of these guys get six figures.
- David
It's good to be the king...of the internet.

$12,500 "pay" for an 18 minute speech is $11.57 per second. To avoid cheating your audience, don't inhale.

My sister's at the "exploratory"phase. They want to know what she might speak about for 18 minutes at TED Long Beach next February. Gulp! General topic is "What the World Needs Now". There are 12 sessions and each of them have a name: Insight, Courage, Discovery, Provocation, Invention, Imagination, Inspiration, Reason, Energy, Laughter, Simplicity, Wisdom. So, suggestions? spell checking is a big use of google, but obviously this chart is exaggerating for comedic effect
- Chris Heath
I don't use Google to find porn or for spell checking
- LANjackal
I use Google most times as launchpad for big complicated URLs or to search in Wikipedia if I really search for usefull Information. And only as needed for spell checking. Never understood how is searching for Porn on Google. I belive it is a myth.
- JoeD
I do use Google For Spell Check and finding info. But the others not so much.
- TheHenry
@TheHenry: You do more often check how a word is spelled than searching for something??
- JoeD
I very often use google not so much for spell *checking* but for spell *finding* passing in very absurd spelling (which I can come up with based on what I hear) and then google amazingly always finds the word, even when my input is 100% wrong. (English is not my native language)
- Ivan Zlatev
Fortunately it's still under warranty and I kept my receipt. Submitted online service request and waiting for shipping/packaging instructions. Really pissed though. I've never played any games on it, installed Linux in the 1st week, haven't booted into Linux since probably October 2008. Point is: there's been no load on the HDD to justify it dying so early.
- LANjackal
In other news, my Xbox 360 is still going strong. Superior PS3 build quality my ass.
- LANjackal
I think it's pot luck as to which is better quality. Still prefer PS3. Curious: why do you have it if you don't play games on it?
- Amy
Blu-Ray playback. It's still the reference player for most review sites out there and the fact that it's a Sony player and gets frequent firmware updates means it's pretty much future-proof for that. Also as a DNLA device it's a LOT better than the 360 (the 360 is a better Media Extender though). The 360 has the games I want to play at a lower price and with a better controller (I have big hands, which makes the tiny Dual Shock a PITA to use).
- LANjackal
Mine is 2 years old and the Ethernet port is shot. I like the console but it's not quite as well made as I thought
- Rod Middleton
@Rod: Sorry to hear that man. AFAIK the port/NIC's prolly part of the system board, so you'd need a brand new PS3. I just got the instructional email for warranty returns from Sony, now waiting for the prepaid shipping box to arrive :/
- LANjackal
@LANjackal Ahh, fair point - the updates does make it stand out from other Blu Ray players.
- Amy
I have to wonder why sony have not done some form of media distribution deal with a third party such as netflix. Given the lack of blu ray uptake you think that it would make some kind of sense. Particularly as they have a serious foothold on the content provider side.
- Rod Middleton
@g5maniac: That's the problem that's been killing Sony over the past decade - being a content producer/owner + being in the hardware business are 2 incompatible things. The PS3 actually has its own movie download library in the Playstation Store, but nearly no one knows about it
- LANjackal
from IM
In other news on my incredible (lack of) luck of late, Netflix just shipped me a Blu-Ray. Which I can't play, so now I'll have a useless disc at home or have to return it and then re-queue it later. FML :/
- LANjackal
@Guilherme: Yah I'd try not to touch it if I were you, lest the HDD decide to go on permanent vacation. I'm so mad @ Sony
- LANjackal
You just got the short end of the stick. The PS3 still has a much better MTF then the 360. Ever hear of the red ring of death? :-)
- Noah White
@Noah: I have a 360 also, and it's doing just fine :)
- LANjackal
Well, prepaid shipping box arrives on July 1, hopefully it's a quick turnaround from there.
- LANjackal
My mate had a 2nd hand 60gb version (hard to come by in UK) and the disk drive decided to stop reading but they'd collected it, fixed it and returned it to him in a shockingly short time. I'm sure it'll be fine from there.
- Amy
PS3 return box just arrived (a lot earlier in the day than I expected it to). Packing it up to ship it off via UPS later today :)
- LANjackal
PS3 dropped off at UPS earlier, now en route to service center in Laredo, TX where it will be gutted for parts and shipped back as an empty shell (I hope not)
- LANjackal
Wasn't the PS3 dead on arrival?? jk... i cant believe your xbox survived without crapping out
- Cassidy
No it wasn't, HDD FAIL after 10 mths, that would explain the OP ^^^^ (!!!) lol
- LANjackal
Oh wait I get what you mean, yes, it'll be DOA when it gets to the service center. But Laredo, TX is one of the poorest places in the country and right next to the Mexican border. Not a bad place to run an electronics chop shop. Figures that Sony warns in honking BIG letters not to send anything but the console because it might not be returned, lol.
- LANjackal
360 is a better gaming experience but a significantly lower build quality. There are a million things you can shit on Sony for but building a pos isn't one of them with regards to the PS3.
- Geoff Schultz
@Geoff: My 360 hasn't RRODed yet, still going strong
- LANjackal
@Richard: As much as I love HD discs, the poor uptake of Blu-Ray among consumers is well documented
- LANjackal
Well documented by who? It as not been a "poor uptake." By any stretch.
- Richard Lawler
What, wait, you're sending it in for a new hdd??? Do you have any idea how easy it is to replace the hdd yourself? It's intended - Sony WANTS people to replace/upgrade their hdds. For those who don't know: http://www.cnet.com.au/how-to-...
- Will Higgins™
I got my PS3 off eBay used almost 2 years ago and it's SOLID. And if the only issue with your PS3 is the hdd, it's not even really the PS3's fault, it's the hdd's. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the failure rate on PS3 hardware is less then the failure rate of standard hdd's. It'd be like blaming Apple or Dell if the hdd in your laptop/desktop died. I think the PS3's use Seagates, so go complain about them.
- Will Higgins™
@Will: 1 word for you: Warranty. The PS3's still covered, so by sending it in I get the problem fixed at no cost to me. Also my unit had Fujitsu 80GB HDD, not Seagate. Go figure.
- LANjackal
from IM
I love a good warranty claim. I've only ever heard of one other person whose PS3 died (YellowROD), out of warranty it's $330 to service. Might as well buy a new one. But yea, lots of people don't realize how easy it is to upgrade the hdd. It's a really nice design feature imo.
- Will Higgins™
@Will Yeah thanks for the advice tho, I def would've replaced it myself if it wasn't under warranty
- LANjackal

PS3 delivered to service center in Laredo, TX on July 6 @10:14. We'll see how long this turnaround takes ...
- LANjackal
HOLY S*, how's this for a quick turnaround: PS3 delivered to service center yesterday, unit (dunno if it's the same one or a different one) shipped today. That is the FASTEST electronics service turnaround I've ever experienced. And all for free :). I guess the high $400 price tag went somewhere
- LANjackal
UPS just delivered PS3. Time from failure to return: 8 business days. Not bad, Sony. Not bad at all :)
- LANjackal
Update: It's definitely NOT the same unit I sent in. Same model though.
- LANjackal
Just happened to mine. I'm fixing it myself soon found a great video on YouTube on how. Had my ps3 2 years.

Thanks for the heads up. BTW, here is the retweet from the SPAM account: RT @SPAM If someone you just KNOW isn't a spammer is suspended right now, their account is prob contaminated and we're fixing it.
- RAD Moose
I'm glad about the real spammos being zapped, but sure is odd they have to temporarily suspend bona fide accounts in droves!!! Thanks for staying on top of this Jesse. Where is Mashable when we need them?? Nothing from Pete et al yet...
- Mari Smith
Hopefully it will get rid of all those Kathy34982s and Elisa9867s
- Carlton Prest
they're suspending legit accts, but the bots and spammers aren't getting banned the way they need to.
- Dawn S. Lambe
My account was suspended for some reason. Awhile ago I had some duplicate posts due to wayward drupal module however for some reason it was suspended in the last 4 hours. I was using twollow and was following "online marketing" so that I could learn more from people discussing online marketing. Could this have caused it? I sent in a support request so we will see what happens.

I got suspended and I am not spam! A lot of good Tweets are getting suspended.

4chan is currently to blame, they were trying to get on the top of trending topics (and succeeded)
- mjc
Michael, I'm wondering if it happened for some reason due to that. Maybe Twitter got trigger happy to kill the attack.
- Jesse Stay
Doesn't necessarily make sense. If the problem is the gorilla anatomy thing, wouldn't they just go after those accounts?

"There seems to be a wave of suspensions going around Twitter today, and it’s turning quickly into an echo chamber of confusion and frustration. We’ve received several tips (the first one being from Mashable guest writer Matt Singley) that a range of users are being taken down, including some with large followings such as @marismith and the LA Times Top of the Ticket account." http://mashable.com/2009...
- Kimber Scott
Kimber, check out the comments on my post - you'll see there are many more. Also check out the real-time stream and you'll see people complain real-time.
- Jesse Stay
They suspend @marismith but not @GangbangGirl @cumcandy & @kellikanyon. That's rich

Yes, Jesse, I saw the stream and the other comments. My Twitter account is working again. Thank goodness.

I didn't get suspended. Glad in a way, but not sure I care about it. I don't bother with twitter much anymore. I'm mainly here on friendfeed now.

@Robert Come on now... I've deserved to be on this site on multiple occasions (You see the pics with the sleeveless shirts? That was me!) I don't think you have to worry about Walmart taking the site down (they're probably behind the whole ting, it wouldn't surprise me! :)
- Kittyburgers
At any rate ... looks like Divine has been wakened from the dead. I should submit some shots of my own, I mean, after all, it IS my second favourite store, and I can often be found milling about in many different locations around the area. HINT: you can usually find me in the pet accessory department ... if not there, then in the sock department, buying socks I really don't need.
- Kittyburgers
Hmmm, I'm actually feeling a trip to the local Walmart coming on...
- Kittyburgers
LOL I know! I want to go to Walmart now just to take pictures. I've seen these people and worse at the locations I go to.
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Oh, oh...now Walmart will become like a safari. Shhhh...be very, very quiet! We're hunting Hill Folk.
- ‘-.-’ Tutivillus Grift
my girl, my son and her family are avid fans of Walmart. I always get these phone calls about some abuse story. I'm not sure why they go. I think they like the large quantities of packaged food. they think my family are snobs... we spend extra money on yuppie upstate hippie markets. it isn't me... it is my mother. frankly I could dig Walmart

Yeah I converted my company (local branch) to GApps almost two years ago now. Best decision EVER! Now the rest of the group wants to standardise on Outlook... worst idea EVER! Aaaggghhh!
- Travis Koger
I hate using outlook too. RIT just switched student account so that they can be used through Gmail instead. I am hoping it is successful so they provide it to staff soon too! http://google.rit.edu/switch...

My university forces it upon me. It has no spam filter either. Plus it's not possible to redirect the email to my Gmail inbox. Basically, don't go to INHOLLAND University in The Netherlands. Ever.

The OWA on Exchange 2003 is great, as long you use Firefox or Safari and don't get all the 'copy Outlook in Internet Explorer' stuff
- Aad 't Hart
Outlook Express all the way. Old school, baby!
- ilter Kalkanci
The 2003 version blows, though I like the simple version you get with Firefox vs the IE one. The one from Exchange 2007 is much better. I think Google needs to license ActiveSync and allow you to hookup Gmail to Exchange. Just use it as a mail client for the Exchange backend.
- William
William, they have licensed ActiveSync, and currently use it for their iPhone mail connections.
