If poss I would like to see FB and Google and not FB against Google ,if they will work one with the other we will all have a better world
- Johni Fisher
Jeunelle, I knew I shouldn't have started this. Autofollowing was stupid on Twitter and it'll be stupid here. But I will check you out.
- Robert Scoble
Johni: that's not how this will play out. Facebook wants to be the next Google.
- Robert Scoble
It's definitely a crazy space right now. The post helps explain or elaborate (for me) on our very brief conversation from this morning at Shel's. How do you think Google Reader and all the enhancements they've been doing plays into all this. It would seem that they are trying to be more like FriendFeed?
- frank barry
Btw...did you know, you can add tags by typing ((tag: abc, def, ghi)) ? i only found that out today...
- Zee.
consider that one "pans" the steam for signal/gold, using ones social graph, etc... we should look to turn the stream into a gushing river of data that we ride ... the stream is your friend(feed) :)
- khrisloux
frank: Google Reader falls apart for me. They still haven't fixed their speed issues. I hate it. And, anyway, Facebook or Twitter is where I get the news now and it comes in a lot better than Google Reader.
- Robert Scoble
khrisloux: I love the stream as much as anyone, but it does not solve all problems. If I want to find a pizza place in Half Moon Bay the stream is worthless. Now, if you give me a list of four pizza places, each with its own stream, now THAT is huge value!
- Robert Scoble
Robert : FB are soooo far from Google ,Google knows to make money and FB are far years from that ,if we are talking on the real time - Google is going to win it big ,,, FF is with FB as they understood it 2 months before FB
- Johni Fisher
Johni: did you know that Facebook has $500 million in revenues ALREADY per year? Do NOT underestimate this company. It is going all the way.
- Robert Scoble
Now, if you give me a list of four pizza places, each with its own stream.. that is where the money is..
- Tyson
Reader has sped up some with the addition of "PubSubHubbub", but i agree it's not Twitter. Twitter works best for me from a news standpoint. Reader is doing something though. Reader needs some sort of crazy seach or Google needs to push reader "comments", "likes" and "shares" into their search results.
- frank barry
[first i think you should go get dinner!] both views are relevant 1) the aggregated stream of "pizza" and 2) the content level stream for each restaurant ... why should i have to filter/sort/read each restaurants stream when i can manipulate a giant river of pizza (data) with the click of a mouse?
- khrisloux
Tyson: actually that just creates the necessary ingredients for money. The real money is in Yelp's offers. But those will appear right over the stream. :-)
- Robert Scoble
khrisloux: if you give me both we're both happy! :-)
- Robert Scoble
ha! only requires global deployment of Echo ;)
- khrisloux
*walks over to Yelp, opens door and peers in..*
- Tyson
So Twitter and Yelp need to meet eachother ... match made in heaven :)
- frank barry
frank: yelp and Twitter would be a VERY interesting combination. The problem is @ev wants to be a billionaire and Yelp doesn't have enough money and Twitter doesn't have enough money to buy Yelp. So, I don't think that will happen.
- Robert Scoble
The last line of your post astounded me since I wasn't aware that Facebook had hired a former key employee of Google. When you talk about Gmail or the monetization system at Google there's nothing small or insignificant about it. :)
- James Stratford
Robert :OHH no I dont underestimate them at all but they are THE social community and far from Google ,yes they are the best and the biggST but in the real time I cant see them doing the war against Wave and the integration with Google reader ,Gmail and Google apps ,and reg the FB revenues its great for them if it will help them as well to get profit from that and not to eat it :-))
- Johni Fisher
Yea, Facebook could gobble up Yelp, but that seems far fetched (though they did buy FriendFeed). I see you're point on how it would need to go down. Maybe Twitter will figure out how to make some $ or get more funding. Possible I guess.
- frank barry
Off topic I know, but by the way it's good to see you've adopted Posterous! :)
- James Stratford
If Facebook was thinking (which they obviously have been lately) going after Yelp might just make sense. It would be powerful especially with the iPhone (or mobile world) and people on the go. That sort of falls down because of the type of sharing that goes on within FB though. Twitter is much more "open" and the "culture" of the users is more about sharing/giving than I see in FB. Twitter/Yelp wins on use ... let's see if we can make them figure it out =)
- frank barry
Johni: Google Wave is too geeky and the interface is too complicated. It won't get mainstream acceptance.
- Robert Scoble
Was just looking for your posterous last week. Glad to see you there now.
- Katy Barrilleaux
I can't believe I was on posterous.com before Scoble!
- Prokofy Neva
I am relieved to hear you say Google Wave will remain too geeky and not get mainstream acceptance because it is the great destoyer of chronology. You know how time is so that everything doesn't happen at once, and space is so it doesn't happen all at once *to you*? Well, that's what Google Wave removes.
- Prokofy Neva
The commenting system on posterous blows. I can't fix my terrible typos :(. Robert what advantage do you gain from posting on poseterous over your blog?
- Mark Essel
from iPhone
1. I use Google to search for everything. I never think to search Facebook, unless I know someone is on there for sure - i.e a friend. 2. Posterous is good for 'quick and dirty' posts, and great for grabbing and snatching stuff from emails etc.
- Ian May
Disqus has been so poor, I've almost fired them a couple of times in the last 6 months. Even Wordpress's native comment system is better than Disqus at the moment. This new version sounds like it'll put them about even with the field. That may not be good enough.
- Cliff Gerrish
You don't have to RT to see the new Disqus. You can go straight to the video.
- Louis Gray
@Cliff. That's sad to hear. What went wrong? - daniel@disqus
- Daniel Ha
I'd guess this is in response to JS-Kit's Echo. Fortunately I have several blogs so I can try both. There are things to like about both.
- Leo Laporte
i'm so ready, with this and the new functionality on tumblr, looks like my favorite internet toys are evolving nicely...
- Paul Greer
I've yet to have a problem with Disqus. Then again, I've yet to have a whole lot of exposure to it either. I mean, at one time, I thought Xanadu was an awesome movie.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Right on time! Wanted to change from Disqus and try Echo, but i rather stick with them. Let's see.
- Tibor Holoda
Disqus needs to work on better mechanism to stop spam. They are so behind the curb it's not even funny. I'm dumping Disqus in favor for JS-Kit..
- Mike Fruchter
Looks purdy (really). But DISQUS' big bugaboo is spam. That's what drove me back to WP native comments.
- Chris Baskind
Agreed on the spam part. We did something new with the next version; in the mean-time, we just released the ability to input your own Akismet API key. It's available as of this morning. :)
- Daniel Ha
Meh. Still not eye catching enough to make me put my system's comments wholly in the hands of a third party. I don't trust you that much. Nothing personal.
- Otto
Otto - it's not entirely - each comment is also saved locally on your blog. You own your comments.
- Jesse Stay
The biggest news is the Real-time announcement - totally excited to see that (can I get a preview, can I? can I?) I like Disqus better than Echo because RTs aren't bundled in with comments (hopefully it remains that way).
- Jesse Stay
Sweet, just pasted my Akismet key into my Disqus setup. Great work! You are now slightly ahead of ID again, and that's not even counting whatever v3 will bring.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
I've had Echo onboard for just few days, but I can't get syncing with native WP comments working. Looks like I'll give DISQUS v3 a shake.
- Micah Wittman
Is it just me or do some elements of the new version look a lot like Backtype? Either way, looking forward to what the new version will offer. It runs on my firm's site (http://webtechlaw.com) and does a decent job.
- Paul Jacobson
If its at all difficult to deploy v3 I'll wait for Louis to do it first, and see how it looks on his site.
- DGentry
Daniel, the spam improvements are great news. I know you guys have been working on that. And I continue to tell folks you're a great team. Looking forward to trying v3.
- Chris Baskind
ROFL - They improved the spam situation ... and are getting people to spam twitter about it? Whaaaatever. You can't have my tweet.
- Joel Bennett
So I guess I was a little late with that post .... huh ? :) Reminder to self .... always check Louis' FF stream .....
- Charlie Anzman
+1 Akiva for Xanadu reference. Awesome movie (in a campy kind of way).
- Rick Cogley
saw a report about this and just updated my blogs
- Rachel Clarke
also, love that Friendfeed now has the 'comment' button at the bottom even when viewing as part of stream,A change that happened in the last few days
- Rachel Clarke
I upgraded mine to 2.8.4 this morning, and then later saw a report about the 2.8.3 vulnerability.
- Joey Gibson
It's a pain in the butt, but I upgraded all of my sites this morning.
- Derek Coward
Alan: it was worse than that. We were still on 2.7x.
- Robert Scoble
Someone might want to warn the Techcrunch blog(s), they appear to be on 2.7.1 still.
- Mo Kargas
No, don't tell Techcrunch, they are too busy reporting on stuff.
- Alex Scoble
Any who has a following should let any of their Wordpress friends know about this. As I understand this flaw doesn't give the hacker access to the blog, just changes the password to mess with the owner.
- Keith Rowland
"Yesterday a vulnerability was discovered: a specially crafted URL could be requested that would allow an attacker to bypass a security check to verify a user requested a password reset. As a result, the first account without a key in the database (usually the admin account) would have its password reset and a new password would be emailed to the account owner." - Wordpress.org
- Keith Rowland
I tried calling Arrington, he didn't pick up the phone. Oh well. I did leave him a message.
- Robert Scoble
Does anybody use Thesis and if you do how do you like it? I'm considering purchasing a Thesis to update my old blog.
- Jeunelle Foster
I use Thesis on four blogs. It is well worth it. I ran K2 before that, which was good, but the things you can do with openhook on Thesis takes it to another class.
- david
I don't personally use Wordpress currently but for the "we wouldn't touch wordpress etc.." crew, what makes you think your choice of CMS/blog is any more secure? Even if you use static HTML, http servers can still sometimes be exploited. Being complacent about security because you chose some other software, is almost recklessly naive.
- dannystaple
Bummer. This happened to me in April. Someone hacked into one of my Wordpress accounts and dismantled my blog completely. I'm pretty tired of updating and maintaining my Wordpress sites. It's a constant task. Typepad has actually been the most headache free platform in my experience. Squarespace is sounding pretty good these days though. Maybe I'll go totally minimalist and just do the Posterous thing.
- Richard Merritt
It's a little easier with the the in admin update tool. Would be nice if it could do it automatically though
- James Tenniswood
The "vulnerability" found the other day was more of an annoyance, really. It didn't offer a way into the site, just a way to reset the password and mail the new password to the admin.
- Otto
Richard: or you could switch to a managed wordpress.com blog and import all your posts easily. then you dont have to worry about upgrading. A upgraded Wordpress.com site is better than a squarespace site IMO.
- Logan Lindquist
From what I understand the admin password vuln isn't that big a deal because they would need access to your email as well and if they have that your already screwed.
- Logan Lindquist
This once more raises the question: is wordpress really worth all the hassles? It's far from the clean, intuitive system it once was, as anyone who has tried to show someone how to use it to build and maintain a reasonably full featured solution will find out.
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
I'm sorry to hear you were hacked. Yes, I upgraded to 2.8.4 when I read about the vulnerabilities.
- Shevonne
"my FTP client kept timing out." - Have you tried the automatic updater in the control panel?
- John Craft
Joelle: its not a hassle. yes its worth it. if you dont like managing the upgrades pay for a wordpress.com.
- Logan Lindquist
what do you mean hacked? 2.8.3 only meant someone could do something that reset your password and emailed it to you (happened to me) but they wouldnt know your password. (this all assuming you were on 2.8.3?)
- Paul Stamatiou
Paul: well, I was on 2.7x and someone reset my password AND posted some porn links into a blog post of mine.
- Robert Scoble
What? No lawyers in suits? Mark's setting a pretty low bar on the dress code for this sort of thing...:)
- Tomas Remotigue
Our lawyers were wearing shorts actually -- no air conditioning at their office on Sundays I guess.
- Paul Buchheit
Zuckerberg's the only one from FB who could be bothered to show up?
- Andy Bakun
American big business such a formal affair
- Robert Higgins
Contrary to popular misconception, lawyers don't actually enjoy wearing suits. Haul us into work on a Sunday, and we'll definitely be dressing comfortably. :)
- Brian Chang
Andy, the person on the left is Vaughan Smith from Facebook. Sanjeev (the fourth FriendFeed founder) is not pictured because he was boarding an airplane.
- Paul Buchheit
Paul, that's so awesome. FB's an awesome company to do business with.
- Jesse Stay
Hey Paul congratulations - FriendFeed has been leading the way since its inception. Are the photos you've posted copy-protected or could I use them in a story on the deal?
- Mitch
...congrats.can't wait to see what happens with both FF and FB as a result of this.
- .LAG liked that
Please try to keep Friendfeed like it was if they let you. Either way, congrats on the financials!
- Josh Haley
from iPhone
Congrats and best wishes for the future.
- Jeff Stannard
For $50m you could at least have hired a photographer who doesn't shake so much. :)
- Rodrigo Jaroszewski
FF was the cutting edge whereas FB is quickly becoming the mainstream. Unfortunately, the mainstream does not necessarily equal innovation and pushing the envelope. We all suffer when innovation is chilled. But on the other hand, congrats to the FF crew. They made their money!
- laosan
congratulations! keep the innovation coming...
- ozlubling
VERY happy for you guys. Possibly even owe you one or two. Are we getting FriendPhone next?? Think Mark should seriously think about 'Friendbook' :)
- Charlie Anzman
Congratulations to you and your team.
- Maria Niles
just showed the pictures to my students and they were like, "they look like normal people!" Congrats on the deal, onward and upward!
- xxx xxxxx
Congratulations, Paul -- to you and everybody at FF.
- Eric Johnson
Congrats Paul, Bret and the rest of the team, this is awesome news! The big question on everyone's lips is: Who gets to have http://facebook.com/paul? :)
- Fenn
Congrats, and thanks for taking us all on such a terrific ride! Big ups. :)
- Pete Delucchi
You've done a great job! You deserve this and more... Congrats!
- Ricardo J. Valle
now this is what a deal term meeting should look like - file under inspirational -
- mediaeater
Congratulations to everyone at FF. Whose house was the deal made?
- seman
I am sad .. !!! I do not know .. why .. for me its not good news
- Nayan
Ouch . . . just a tad bit of salt in the wounds of some of your more loyal users. I've got a poker if you want to inflict a little more pain
- Lindsey is Fierce!
I call this pic... "Six Happy Dudes & 1,000,000+ Pissed-Off FriendFeeders"
- Brad Williamson
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
- Mathew™ one of a kind
Looks like Mathew™ has found a UI bug by flooding contiguous characters.
- Jay Cuthrell
I don't get the negativity - did no one realize FriendFeed was a business? The object of a business is to sell eventually (either privately or publicly). We should be celebrating their success. This is a huge win for them, as well as Facebook. I personally think it's a huge win for the "loyal users" as well. So now we stab them in the back when they do something huge?
- Jesse Stay
Not to mention we know *nothing* about what this will mean for both services. These guys haven't let us down yet, have they?
- Jesse Stay
The FB/FF deal rocks. Total win for users and developers.
- Steve Gillmor
My comment is because they can see by the flood of responses people are not happy and this post is just a smidge tacky. People are upset and feel betrayed and they haven't addressed that, not that I expected them too. This is pretty much inline with the way they've handled every other major change but before you only had a handful of disgruntles users whereas this time I'd say the majority are upset.
- Lindsey is Fierce!
Congratulations Paul, you should have got more, but I guess $50m is nothing to sneeze at. Have a great wedding anniversary too, I'm sure you both deserve it. Much happiness - :)
- Chris Loft
Those are the kind of business meetings I could get used to - no suits... but selling to Facebook? Hmmm... Good for someone of course but I suppose we'll see where this ride takes us.
- Ken Stewart | ChangeForge
congrats on building an amazing product and incredibly passionate community! I was mad at first, but then realize that the technology was most likely sold, not the community. I'm hoping ff community will stay somewhat untouched and features that have been built into ff will be ported to fb.
- Derek Coatney
Congratulations, FriendFeeders! I'm anxious to see what changes this will bring. FriendFeed is my favorite site to visit, so hopefully y'all will find a way to maintain the FF spirit somehow.
- Keith Pelczarski
No matter the type of big change, there are those who will not like it, often simply because it's change. I for one am very pleased that two of the services I use most are joining forces, and am eager to see the new developments that come of this acquisition. Congrats to EVERYONE on the FriendFeed team. You all deserve it! You've done a great job with a small company. Now lets see what you can do with a large one :)
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
@Jesse Stay re: "the objective of business is to sell eventually" : Ummm, the objective of many businesses is to become profitable by providing a valuable experience to their users. Businesses that feel they can't do that are the ones that sell.
- Shane Gibbons
Congratulations to everyone involved. Well done.
- Darius Dunlap
This is a very sad day in friend feed history. It is horrible because I like friend feed for how it's different from face book. I use facebook but I find it really annoying and I wouldn't use it if my friends and family weren't using it. So if Friend Feed becomes another facebook then i donno if I will keep coming to friend feed.
- Colide81 (James)
from iPhone
Congrats to the FF staff, but you'll have to pardon my lack of exuberance. I have mental pictures of being forced to use the FB UI and it makes me sad =(
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Very happy for the Friendfeed team. These pictures say it all.
- Christian Burns
from iPhone
Where are the photos of everyone celebrating? No beer or champagne?
- Shane
Great match-up guys ! The Fabulous Friender Boys ! - Let's see some integrated mashups and extensible apps and FF UI. Given Google and Twitter a run for their money... Looks like they are going to have to "hook-up" now !
- Mike Schmidt
Congratulations Paul and the team! Hopefully we'll still get the same simple UI for FriendFeed. I'm sure however that no matter what you do, things will turn up nicely.
- Ovidiu Predescu
NOOOOO! I _LOVE_ friendFeed and this will change it forever. Yeah - this will improve Facebook. Great deal guys - I can not wait to see how this works out
- Ric Johnson
@Scobleizer: Come on you're a genius and can not realize future of FF? Turkey was one of important countries which is using FF! They asked no one about this! We hate fcking morons and stupid people on facebook, and I'm sure that this post will be real, just read it: http://ff.im/6pRmM
- Ahmet Alp Balkan
But Ahmed you are still being an ass about it, trying to rain on their good times. Go find a hole under the bridge where you belong. You can be sad and not have to come out all bitchy about stuff. Clear thoughtful comments instead of going all into "fuck you" mode.
- Rasmus Lauridsen
OK, that's great. I hope you can be successful at Facebook Dev Team and enjoy spending that money.
- Ahmet Alp Balkan
- mustafa can
Bizim şirket sahipleri konunun belli saatler arasında, belli kıyafetlerle ofiste oturmak değil, yapılan işin niteliği olduğunu analdıkları zaman gelir tabii. Ama bence bu gavurların dediği gibi "When the hell freezes over".
- özlem ercan
bu postu türkçe commentlerle doldrmak süper fikir.. sarcasm diil ciddiyim
- MobilAdam
Bakmayın böyle güldüklerine arkada buyuk yatırımcılar olmasa batar gider bunlar..Adamların yatırımcıları işi biliyor...
- Zeki Pehlivan
Great result Paul. In such a short time, millions of users, 1 new interface and a marriage with internets' celebrity. This is a period which you should write down to make it as an on-line business case. You people are really wise businessmen. Nice job, congrats! :)
- Olcayto Cengiz
Not happy happy congrats bullshit from me-I used FF.
- frankiecarl
Frankie, a lot of us use FriendFeed and are concerned about where things are going from here. As I said in my comment above: I'm happy for the staff but displeased with who they chose to sell to. I'm perfectly capable of feeling both emotions at the same time.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
wonderful so normal so ordinary so simple
- Thomas Power
MZ looks like he has just returned from the gym
- Joe Dawson
These guys represent the most talked about entreprises (Ok even more so by geeks in the case of Friendfeed) and they're still in their 20s. We're talking millions of dollars and look how relax they look and casually they're dressed.
- lelapin
Awesome, nice to see they are actually in fact human still.
- Robert Schultz
Great photographs showing the very reason why 99% of all people start their own business - money! Well done and good luck for the future.
- David Jagger
this is so great! congrats paul! im really happy for u guys!
- Jason Pollock
Business is Business and we can only move forward with social-media applications as we herald a new interactive platform. Albeit thanks to the Mothers of all Mothers, Google. Frank Burns
- frank burns
We've been acquired by Facebook! We are really excited about joining the Facebook team. (Note: FriendFeed will continue to operate - see the blog post for details)
- Bret Taylor
from Bookmarklet
I am hoping this will lead to nice integration for cross posting! Currently using Twitter App on FB to post and I hate those ff.im links that end up on Facebook.
- Ivan Zlatev
it was good while it lasted, Friendfeed. :(
- holly
"FriendFeed.com will continue to operate normally for the time being. We're still figuring out our longer-term plans for the product with the Facebook team." Those are NOT encouraging things to read as a FF user.
- Scott of Two Countries
Sniff... not sure if I'm excited about this. But I have enormous respect for the FriendFeed team... so, I assume they believe in the move as more than an exit strategy.
- Michael Leggett
@#$& that's all I have to say. For now.
- Zachary TG
Facebook should have been aquired by Friendfeed. Why they hell would you give up your better product to a worse one? Did none of you give a shit about this service to begin wiht?
- Matthew DeVries
Coolest web 2.0 site I've ever seen & used. I hope things don't derail. Ads will be coming soon, which is fine, but.... then what 's next? Please no quizzes!
- Ben Hanten
Who would have thought that after Facebook were shamelessly being "inspired" by FriendFeed, the inevitable would have happened?
- Tyson Key
I'm pissed off. I wan to throw away the whole Internet :
- DarkBls
Hey guys, keep in mind that Facebook is blocked in workplaces across the nation. 250 million casual users commenting about last night's party does not intelligent conversation make.
- Hector
I really can't see how FB would buy FF only to shut it down. There are way too many innovations and features FF has that FB honestly needs. I'm looking forward.
- Harry Wolff
Oh, this does not make me happy. Not at all! I've stayed off of Facebook intentionally and FriendFeed is my favorite social network. This is like when the Red Sox traded Babe Ruth to the Yankees. :>(
- Larry Hawes
i have stopped using FB for the most part and liked FF alot more. now FF will go the way of FB. screwed again.
- Joe Silence is not dead
Congratulations. Enjoy the new challenges of acquisition, and I'm looking forward to the result!
- Wade Dorrell
Berge Gazen beat your score in Mafia Wars
- Berge Gazen
Enjoy your fat paychecks, guys. You've sold us out.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Bravo Bret! Been following your successes ever since we had the opportunity to work together on the YellowPages.ca / Google Maps Canada deal. Congrats!
- Sebastien
I wished it was Google or even Yahoo!, instead...
- Tyson Key
i really hope ff stays as it is. fb is kinder carder while ff is a great tool.
- jkkmobile
Not sure what to make of this. It could eiter be a big win or a huge fail.
- dorn
It could have been Microsoft, which would have been worse for everyone. :(
- Tyson Key
Can I take this opportunity to say I HATE facebook?
- Alex Scrivener
seems the only ppl happy here are the ones in the biz or who stand to profit from the merger.
- Joe Silence is not dead
I guess we should get ready to get poked by our supposed friends and have various shit thrown at us? Plus 5,000 requests by apps that nearly all suck.
- Joey Gibson
There is zero way this could have been a win for anyone, but the now rich founders.
- Matthew DeVries
If I have to go to FB to use FF then it's a lost cause
- Randy Pollock
Painful. And apparently I completely misunderstood what FF was trying to accomplish both technically and as an organization. I guess Facebook must have dangled a pretty big bag of money in front of them.
- Ken Sheppardson
FriendFeed is Dead! Long Live FriendFeed! :/
- Tyson Key
I will reserve judgement, i don't like or use FB but if FF maintains it's current goodness i don't care who cuts the checks.
- Steve C
I hope this doesn't turn into an APP filled hunk of crap. I love FriendFeed, it was the untouched gem of microblogging. I don't want Mafia Wars invited in my FriendFeed!!! Congrats on the sale though.
- Jay Farmington
@Philipp: until the new masters start flexing their muscles and bringing in their own people to enforce their own vision.
- Joe Silence is not dead
I read the blog post and one statement stands out to me "FriendFeed.com will continue to operate normally for the time being." The time being. This is not just bad, I think it may be #FAIL
- berchman
Facebook obviously liked FriendFeed a long time ago. Why would they have copied so many features (feed item comments and the "Like" action, to name a couple) otherwise? It was only logical for this to happen eventually. Doesn't mean I like it, but acquisition is part of the game. I have the same feeling I did when SocialThing! was acquired by AOL, though.
- Voyagerfan5761
"Relationship Status: It's complicated" comes to mind. ;)
- Tyson Key
Wow, I finally sign up, and read this. This could end up being a very bad thing for FF fans: "Your FriendFeed friend just signed up on this poll, would you like to too?"
- Brian Bommarito
Congrats guys. And thanks for your continuos effort in helping promote and integrate web services, like mine, Wakoopa. That's awesome and I hope FB gets better because of it.
- Robert Gaal
This will give FriedFeed the attention it deserves. Otherwise it would have been a geek thing forever.
- Michael Netsch
Will there be a super poke feature launched tomorrow?
- Matthew DeVries
aw, this sux!! Congrats to the Friendfeed team though!
- acedanger
Does this mean that we'll be seeing an influx of webcam spammers, a la Twitter? Along with abolishment of the rooms feature, crappification of the search feature, and more "privacy features" that really just put more nails in the openness coffin?
- Tyson Key
Some people will do whatever their friends request........
- Michael Muller
I really don't see why people would be anything but excited about this Facebook freindfeed deal. Great news as far as I am concerned. The Friend feed team is going to go over facebook and make it that much easier to connect, share... isn't that what the social web is about?
- Kevin Murray
I know a lot of people who use Facebook and enjoy it and that's fair enough. It's just not my cup of tea. The chaps from Friendfeed will get rich and the technology will get absorbed in Facebook but I can't see Friendfeed continuing in anything like it's present form.
- Paul Nash
Don't be so negative, something good might eventually come of this...
- Tarmo Aidantausta
Congrats! I know you all must be crazy excited right now.
- Michele Lorito-Chase
chance for FriendFeed to become more mainstream... congrats FriendFeed team!
- Jeroen De Miranda
Nothing could make me happier than if they integrated the good tools from FriendFeed into Facebook, which is where all my friends are. So a big "yay!" from me.
- Ian Betteridge
happy for you guys, but not for all of us
- Flavio
congratulations. this is going to be interesting.
- Dave Beckett
I think I preferred the non-mainstream version of FriendFeed...
- Tyson Key
I'm turning on my black shirt, my black trouser, my black socks, my black shoes. Although I probably must be happy for you.
- Ton Zijp
NASTY NASTY BAD BAD. But we'll see...
- Daniel Morgan
Given that the FriendFeed team has never been anything but awesome & respectful of its community, I think it's unfair for people to assume that the Facebook acquisition is going to change that.
- Jess Lee
Why in god's name are we flying over this shark?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
- Matthew DeVries
Facebook is like a giant who listens to nobody. Please keep your attitude but I don't think you will be able to do so.
- Burak "cyrus" Bayburtlu

- Ömer Balamir
What happens to all the content that we've created and imported here, and the associated metadata? Will all that disappear into the ether?
- Tyson Key
If the FriendFeed guys can make FaceBook useful and responsive again, this seems like a pretty positive step!
- Robin Barooah
Robin, the Facebook users don't want that I'm afraid.
- Rutger Blom
I have big loss of data concerns. See http://ff.im/6pHjo Is there any way to archive all my FriendFeed posts, likes, comments, and pictures (friendfeed-media.com) off-line? Can some Archive.org-like snapshots of FriendFeed be made (Once a month starting Sept 2009)? I'd like to see the cross-links between my posts & other people's posts, even in 2020. -
- Mitchell Tsai
Mitchell: the FriendFeed site is not shutting down. Your data will not go away any time in the near term future - we are committed to our users.
- Bret Taylor
I just overheard a coworker mention FriendFeed. This is how the world ends...
- CannonGod

- Alper Ömer Esin
Then provide us with a way to easily make a back-up of all of our posts and all of the posts we have Liked and Commented on.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Same question as Mitchel Tsai. How do I export my data? I don't want it to be handed off to Facebook.
- Zio Bonino
I don't see good things coming from this. Although I like Facebook, I liked Friendfeed more. Partly because of the environment and the smallness of it. That is now going to be ruined. So, 10-1 odds that Friendfeed will be no more within a year after it gets intergrated into Facebook?
- Mathew™ one of a kind
I doubt it Robin. Bret can only give us assurances about the "near future." Here's what I think will happen. Just like Twitter acquired Rael Dornfest and his awesome web services, Stikkit and I Want Sandy vanished (and so did he), Facebook will acquire all the talent from Friendfeed, shut this service down and Facebook will continue to suck.
- Jim Hearts FF
Same question as Mitchel Tsai. How do I export my data? I don't want anything to be handed off to Facebook. And I don't want to lose anything.
- Zio Bonino
Congrats obviously, but im not sure about the feeling,, different user groups which can not integrate but collide.. hope there wont be an huge integration in the future.
- Yunus Tunak
I'm happy for FriendFeed! But, at the same time a bit worried about the future. Hope you guys convince FB to not be evil too.
- Vishal Verma
I can't believe it! damn! facebook tos will apply to friendfeed too? should i start to move to another service? why anyone would think that facebook public is friendfeed public?! damn! friedfeed was my favorite! I can't understand this move! they want to kill friendfeed or what?

"I bet I can find 1.000.0000 people who dislike this deal."...Welcome to FriendBook.
- Jacque
Well, huge congraulations to you and your team, you deserve every success. To be honest I had presumed this would happen sooner or later - the only business model cool little startups have is to hope they get bought by someone bigger for their brains and technology. I'm going to be in San Francisco in a couple of weeks and was going to stop by your office to bring you a cake and thank you for a great product - maybe I still will if you're still there and there's still a FriendFeed!
- Alex Lomas
The FF founders must have know this would be a very unpopular move. Most users I know here are not too fond of FB.
- Rutger Blom
"Your data will not go away any time in the near term future - we are committed to our users" There's a bit of a contradiction in your statement, Bret. Nice try though.
- jcunwired
Now I can break my Internet plan at home.
- DarkBls
Grats Bret and the rest of FF. To all the naysayers... Lets see what happens before we start bitching....
- Rasmus Lauridsen
This ties in nicely with the fact that you soon will have the opportunity to make your Facebook profiles public and get followers there.
- Michael Netsch
I don't mean to be negative but there's got to be a win-win logic to each merger&acquisiton. Audience high in only quantity is clearly not a win for friendfeed in the long term by considering its unique selling points. Let's wait and see who will benefit from friendfeed's death now.
- ayca
It's all about the money. I would have payed a couple of dollars each month to use FF.
- Rutger Blom
Seriously, what is this? It's like Bret just announced that he's killed all your mothers or something. It could turn out good, it could turn out bad, but at the end of the day, who cares, it's just a website (I mean honestly, come on). I could see it going either way, but in the near term, this is a pretty big win for the FF team, so congrats guys.
- Chieze Okoye
To be honest, my heart sank a little but I am happy to congratulate you and the team for building such a good brand. Well done.
- Kevin J Hatton
I'm just surprised, that's all. I'm not saying this is a bad thing (it certainly isn't for the owners of FF). I'm willing to sit back and see what happens.
- Jason Huebel
Wow, I specifically use friendfeed b/c it is not facebook. Sounds great for the friendfeed team, but not necessarily for friendfeed users.
- Evan Parker
Born to be sold, like in the old "new economy" era. Remember the late nineties?
- Federico Bolsoman
Sudden desire to check out Strands again... but hey, kudos on the incoming $$ for FF team
- Leslie Poston
This is wisdom. Bracing for Google Wave is a good idea.............
- Kevin J Hatton
this is clearly a talent aquisition... why am i not excited about this? could it be because facebook has been blatantly stealing features from friendfeed shamelessly. Likes were clearly not an original facebook idea...realtime feeds is another i could go on...
- Tate DA FF MVP
While I'm sad, because I suspect this means the best things about FF will disappear or I'll be forced to use FB in some way, if the buyout was for some awesome amount of money, I can't say I blame 'em for taking an offer -- I would.
- Andy Bakun
I came to FriendFeed because I don't like facebook. Now the question is, will facebook become more like friend feed? or will they just take friend feed and turn it into facebook?
- Tom Ray
FF could be a good R&D arm for facebook.
- Andy Bakun
My biggest concern here is that FB has a completely different audience than FF.
- Rutger Blom
Fucking morons. FriendFeed is doomed now. Think logically. Facebook has NO REASON to keep FriendFeed alive. It will simply take FF's best features, suck the life of out of it, then trash FF. Way to go, FirnedFeed, damn.
- Jeremy Buff
This announcement should have been held off until the plans for Friendfeed were known. Regardless, this is *bad* for FF users. Best case: it continues on, but with stagnated feature development. Worst case: it's gone.
- tollie williams
I don't want my FF feed on Facebook :( I use both, but maintain both profiles separate
- Leandro Ardissone ⍨
Sigh... Happy for the team if this is what they want, but baffled by the move. The users that are going to leave because of this will make FF a graveyard and the users it gains, well... Hello spam? Sorry, but I don't like it.
- Vince DeGeorge
from iPhone
Well, I guess it is time to dismantle my friendfeed. We all know where this is headed. So, so glad I didn't move all my rss feeds from greader to friendfeed like so many cheerleaders suggested.
- Matthew Speicher
Dang, and just as I was starting to get used to how FF works. FF is useful on it's own. I hope this only improves FF's system, rather than having it disappear into Facebook's wake.
- Don Faulkner
My big question to everybody here is this: What are the potential downsides / upsides to this acquisition? I mean on paper I just don't see what the pros OR cons are. I don't care for Facebook but I don't see how them acquiring FF is going to change everything.
- Nicholas Kreidberg
furthermore they are 2 different things: I follow a lot of people here that are not in my facebook list, which is for IRL friends!
- Flavio
I don't know where to go next either. I had just settled down to make imaginary friends for all my non-FF tweeps, etc. now, I'm not sure if I should bother.
- Don Faulkner
from IM
I hope friendfeed continues to operate normally but it does not look good.
- ashish
integrate best features of ff to fb, then try to innovate in fb if possible, then kill ff... that's it, cheers, all the best. grrrr...
- Kemal
niczak has good points. FF & FB aren't exactly competitors, but they aren't orthogonal either. Let's hope FB's smart enough to see the difference and improve both platforms.
- Don Faulkner
from IM
Nicholas: The upside for Facebook is they just bought an engineering team that's built many of the feature's Facebook's going to need to stay competitive. The upside for FriendFeed's engineering team is $$$ and the ability to build system for a wider audience. FriendFeed's user base is small enough that it'll either get absorbed into Facebook or move on, and FF will become a footnote on the Internet timeline.
- Ken Sheppardson
Don, I don't think FB wants to maintain two platforms.
- Rutger Blom
first tr.im (heard about it yesterday), now this. I wasn't a heavy tr.im user (yet), but sad to see it go, even if I think url shortening is silly.
- Don Faulkner
from IM
As FB said they're interested in the people and not in the site, what if the community will keep running FF without its current staff?
- Flavio
I'll have to go with Flavio's position too. Given this news (plus tr.im and who knows who's next), I'd tend to favor community supported or federated services for things like this in the future.
- Don Faulkner
from IM
I am purposely not on facebook because I don't really want to talk to people I have not talked to in 20 years.
- Andy Bakun
Once again. I'm happy for the FF team. They worked hard and now collect. That's fair. Wonder if they're sitting in a bubble pool drinking champagne while we cry out here ;-)
- Rutger Blom
trouble is (from my perspective), that the philosophies of the two platforms are at odds. FB wants to bring people to the site and keep them there, while FF is a hub, bringing people in and then sending them back out. (That's part of why it's hard for the newcomer to understand, IMHO.)
- Don Faulkner
from IM
Quote «Taylor and Cox say that the Friendfeed product will live on independently, and eventually Friendfeed will be merged into Facebook. But the Friendfeed team is not being kept whole. I don't see what's so bad about it since no one knows right now what the outcome will be, everyone is just making assumptions that could possibly be wrong..... Might help just sitting back and seeing what happens first before complaining.

Don, I doubt there is any discussion going on there. They're too busy throwing quizes at each other.
- Rutger Blom
Congrats, FF! I'm approaching the situation with cautious optimism. A lot of my friends only share stuff via the Facebook wall/feed, so if Facebook is able to make their feed more like the FF feed (i.e. good, instead of sucktacular) through this acquisition, it's mostly a win for me in the end.

- Harry Toon
Please say that facebook.com will be shutting down, and the combined company will still be called FriendFeed... I bet it won't happen, though.

"Regarding FB/FF - Here's how it's [probably] going to work. Best case: Facebook will continue to support and develop FriendFeed. Worst case: this is great news for Amplifeeder.
- David Gaw
FAIL. Facebook is the new myspace, and now friendfeed will become a part of that BS. Can't say I'm too surprised because eventually we all sell out. BTW I don't see friendfeed lasting more than the rest of this year, if that. The good news is that we can all be subjected to add 'Are you related to a monkey?' and Blackjack apps while having annoying personal ads on our profile pages. Fuck this shit.
- Tomy Thomson

Congrats, but concerned that FriendFeed and its tools may disappear. Merging the tools with Facebook seems impossible.
- Mike Reynolds
So, what does the acquisition of FriendFeed by Facebook mean to us, users of both websites: Can I make a friend request from FriendFeed, and be approved for both, on one click
- Reyna Carlos
Exciting news guys. I am actually looking forward to your collaboration with / work for FB. No matter what people may or may not like about FB, it does succeed in reaching a more "diverse" audience compared to most other Web 2.0/social web companies. Paired with your team's excellence in realizing features that succeed in pleasing the geekiest of Web 2.0 affine individuals, I think you are steering towards exciting waters :)
- Mustafa K. Isik
*heart sinks* actually a bit of shock - I think that Facebook will leave Friendfeed as-is but I don't think there is hope for future innovation in Friendfeed since their best superstar team members will be pulled onto 'more important' Facebook issues...
- Pon

Awful news for users but congratulations to you guys. Ideally, FB will run FF as a distinct service but I'm not hopeful. I don't want the diversity and noise that facebook brings - people doing quizzes on which movie star they resemble and playing silly games. I also wanted to keep my day to day social activity distinct from the targeted information and discussion I use FF for.

- Karoli
Karoli: that is due to the effectiveness of the FF platform and interface, which help to join conversations and find interesting people more so than FB does

Thomas Power still believes that Facebook/FF/Linkedin (2010) will be acquired by Apple (2011) and this is a transitional acquisition in the SN market cycle. The world is shifting to Mac, iTunes, iPhones and FB own the next generation. Apple have $29bn of cash on deposit price is not an issue. Google must jump for twitter while MS fiddle in the sticks with Yahoo. BillG will be back at the MS helm 2012.

Flavio: never heard of lifestream.fm before, but I'm going to go check it out. I'll reiterate, though, that I'm now shy of any service like this, since it can disappear just as it's getting good. I heard about sweetcron.com last night (via http://ff.im/6pR2w). Maybe it's time to move from centralized to distributed again.
- Don Faulkner
Just finished setting up my lifestream.fm at http://lifestream.fm/dfaulkner. Lifestream does what it says, and no more. FF's search blows lifestream away. FF is more flexible about adding source feeds, but lifestream does fine without the flexibility I suppose. FF still wins, or would, if I thought it would be sticking around. :P
- Don Faulkner
I also hate facebook, not because of their silly quizzes and pokes, but because I suspect they would like to maintain massive user base as the determining factor in choosing a social network. I would love to switch to orkut as I use so many other google services, but I can't because nobody else does. That should not be my criteria.... I thought friendfeed would try to make social networks work together.
- Ru Viljoen

- Liza
The reason you have two URL profiles is because you seem to have published comments using both URLs, when you should only have comments with www.lizsperling.wordpress.com. You can still claim both on BackType.com by entering both URLs in http://www.backtype.com/home... — BackType Connect allows you to see conversations happening around the content published on *your* blog. We offer a WordPress plugin to show those related conversations on your blog, also called BackType Connect.

Since we launched BackType Connect, we’ve seen a growing demand for our API. We serve millions of requests every single day through our free (limited to 1,000 daily requests) and commercial API. Here are just some of the companies using our API to do interesting things:
- Mike Bracco

that's it- the understanding of publics.
- Kevin Marks
Plus they have video games for entertainment and have lots of time. I don't have time, so Twitter is a form of entertainment that I can get in bite sized chunks.
- Robert Scoble
That's it in one sentence: "Most teens just want to talk with their friends, not write to the world, he says" now maybe the world can start spinning again.
- Hoop
It's really interesting how I've noticed that most of my peers (20-somethings) are too hooked on Facebook to use Twitter or FriendFeed. Again, they don't see the point; Facebook has built-in Twitter that shares with the people they already know and care about.
- Jason Preston
too easy to get in trouble for what you say - on most networks you have to accept the invite of those who want to connect - not so on twitter
- Julie Gallaher
That's the same response I get from nieces and nephews.
- Joseph Ferris
Same thing I hear from a ton of people, regardless of age. For most people, they first need a "point" to use it or else they either don't sign up or don't return.
- Jeff Peters
danah talked about how some teens are using private twitter accounts, as Facebook is now too public, as their parents and teachers are there http://bit.ly/Awmw9 Multiple publics http://bit.ly/publics
- Kevin Marks
My 14-year-old daughter doesn't want to share her life with the world on Twitter...and I'm good with that!

They care, like us about reputation, but within their 'groups' - not publicly....

I am here, and I am only thirteen. But I use it to post news, not about my life.

I'll have to explain it to her in detail before she gets it, prefers Facebook since ALL of her friends are there

Kids today don't understand nor care about the social dynamics that they will be involved in. Without a solid background now they can never hope to make truly justified choices later on. It scares me because I have to deal with them directly.
- Adam
I'm not much older than your son, but I have a twitter. Noticeably many of my friends detest twitter and compare it to facebook status messages, therefore they are unable to understand what makes Twitter great. Facebook has managed to grab the minds of us teenagers. I must admit I am much more inclined to update my facebook statuses as my friends will comment on it.
- Rahul Krishnakumar
the reason Twitter does well with teens is because they don’t care about networking – the act of creating/extending a network – as much as they do in their existing network itself. http://www.kanjhan.com/2009...

PARDON ME! DOES ANYBODY HAVE A BRAIN?

It seems that every ones use of these tools is a bit different. I use twitter/friendfeed to keep in touch with fellow surfers and fellow web developers I know both here and across the world. Twitter/friendfeed have be come my best tools for this.

Zach - no clue man, you're the exception the point in this thread :)
- Bwana ☠
Also teenagers are less likely to stick with Twitter long enough to make it useful to them, Facebook has a sort of instant gratification with adding your friends and commenting them etc.
- Chris Lawrence
I am @ricklafave on twitter, but I see the gap being that teens are all about text direct conversations. I see a huge gap in communication between the generations.
- Rick LaFave
Bwana- You just got yourself another subscriber. :)
- Zachary TG
Hey now, I'm 16 and Twitter totally rules over Facebook for me. Twitter's for discussing news; Facebook's for your personal life. Totally agree w/ Zachary TG
- Kirk R. Arner
Of course there are exceptions, I'm 19 and I'm on Friendfeed and Twitter, but we're talking about the majority of teenagers, Kirk and Zachary.
- Chris Lawrence
Have to agree here... my kid (13) and step brother (14) are total facebook kids... they occasionally hop on MySpace as well. Both try to get into Twitter, but really do not see the point.
- Darin aka iGoByDoc
Chris Lawrence: I understand. But like 60% of students at my school use Twitter, only around 40% use Facebook.
- Zachary TG
By the time today's teens are into things they'll look upon Twitter like we now look at IRC. I'm wondering if I even still have an IRC client on my machine....
- Andrew Leyden
Totally agree, Chris, but more teens are into tech than people think. Not all of us are texting to our friends about useless junk 24/7.
- Kirk R. Arner
because it takes too long and is too involved...
- Morgan Haley
Adults are very lazy...140 characters is tough to power through, but doable. The only people lazier than adults? Teenagers. Why bother with Twitter when their lives revolve around Facebook and it meets all their needs?
- Todd Pringle
That's really cool, I know about three of my friends on Twitter and they never use it haha. And if they do they use it as they would Facebook status.
- Chris Lawrence
Even though I text friends, it is just for information, not for useless information.
- Zachary TG
Todd Pringle: I am so not lazy. I wouldn't be spelling my words correctly now would I?
- Zachary TG
Texting has always been really big in Australia, Zachary. It's a habit that's hard to get out of.
- Chris Lawrence
Well yeah, same for me, but we're the exceptions.
- Kirk R. Arner
Zach: speaking in generalities of course. Clearly you are an exception. All up on Friendfeed and whatnot.
- Todd Pringle
I recently started texting. But it was almost created in Canada.
- Zachary TG
I will be happy when everyone has the internet in their pocket and I can just email people instead of spending 25c everytime I want to use 140 characters :(
- Chris Lawrence
Todd Pringle: Thank you. I see that people on FriendFeed are different then the casual social networker. We have manners and use large words and sentences. Thank you
- Zachary TG
goes back to "announce" vs. "discuss", too. Fb has nice "my friends and family" feel that Twitter and FF don't yet have.
- MikeAmundsen
Depends on geographic area. Here it was the Myspace revolution, then slowly became Facebook. The early adopters of Facebook jumped on the Twitter ship and now the middle stage of Facebook adopters are jumping to Twitter. Does Facebook rule supreme among my group? Yes, with myspace a close second, and twitter slowly catching up. PS, i'm 16.
- Sean Quinn
I also don't think most teenagers grasp the difference between Twitter and Facebook. My friends who are content with Facebook don't see any need for Twitter and are actually puzzled by it's intended use. Over and over again I here, "Well Facebook can do that, can't it?"
- Angus Burton
It is only 5c in Canada per text, and unlimited for 5 dollars.
- Zachary TG
Yeah phone plans in Australia are really ridiculous. There are hardly any unlimited SMS plans and the ones that are you are usually paying over $80 a month. But I digress!
- Chris Lawrence
But our data plans are outrageous. $30 for only 500MB.
- Zachary TG
My 16-year-old daughter said the same thing a few months back. But she finally relented and is on Twitter now. A few weeks ago she said "I've never been more informed in my life" since joining.
- Patrick Giblin
Seeing the longtail of Twitter takes a somewhat more mature mindset. That's why some mature teens can 'get' Twitter and why some childish adults don't (and content with Facebook).
- CannonGod
I think the topic teens liking or not liking twitter topic is entertaining at best. Does anyone have any decent statistics on this? Not to mention the term "teen" is pretty loose 13 and 18 are a world apart. I would think a teen using or not using would be more based on their personal interest. My 20 and 30 year old friends that aren't in the tech industry could care less about it.
- Nicholas Fidanza
Admittedly younger generations want to talk with less ppl but more frequently, and adults want to create more connections for friendship or financial gain. Kids don't need to worry about being loved, they have mum & dad at the end of the day :-P Sad single geeks however...
- CannonGod
@Angus that was a comment concern among my friends. Where twitter began to rule was among mobile updating. Although teens can use and do use Facebook Mobile, a two-way conversation can work well among a group of friends via Twitter on mobile phones much rather than Facebook status updates/conversations on Facebook, in my experience.
- Sean Quinn
I'm 16 and me and my close group of friends use twitter-its possible to have "chat room" like conversations about things (where are we gonna go after school, etc.) if we're all hooked up on it-it works great, but admittedly some kids use twitter more than others (like me)
- Oliver Reich
My 15 year old chats on Myspace with her friends. I told here to message one of her regular chat buddies as "You Troll" today and she laughed until she almost peed her pants. :)
- Eric Logan
I just see Twitter as Social SMS. Teens like texting, so really it's just an extension of that. I can therefore see it being used more as a tool rather than an actual network per-say.
- CannonGod
While it’s possible to make Twitter “private,” the culture of Twitter is all about participation in a large public square. From the digerati seeking widespread attention to the politically minded hoping to appear on CNN, many are leveraging Twitter to be part of a broad dialogue. Teens are much more motivated to talk only with their friends and they learned a harsh lesson with social...

The article discusses that Teens like building out profiles, and taking to people they know. Twitter's not really for that - it's used more for information sharing IMO.
- Steffan Antonas
It's a crime to suggest that Twitter as a whole is just a single feature of FB and has been that way since the beginning. I never understood when Twittr was demo'd to me how a single feature of a bigger app (in my case, IM status/mood messages) needed to be an app on its own. However, what the early adopter mass wants, the early adopter mass gets (until the mainstream mass shows up and it's zomg culture/class war... I LOVE watching this.)
- Eric Rice
Sean: That's a good point. Strangely, using Twitter as a conversation base didn't occur to me. I actually thought more about using a FriendFeed room for that.
- Angus Burton
I agree with Patrick and I'm well past my teens! FF adds talking with my friends, so it works.
- Rachel Lea Fox
It is simple: kids don't use Twitter because they dont have an iPhone! Most teenagers don't have a decent internet enabled device that allows them to use Twitter nicely. Most parents can't afford (or want) to pay $150+ phone bills for their kids plus buy them an iPhone. I have many young friends and they all love the "Big Brother" spirit of Twitter. I only use Twitter to broadcast what I am doing on Posterous, and FriendFeed.

I'm an older (some say very old) user and friends my age don't do Twitter, FB etc. Their opinion: why bother when I have email? Why would I want to share with the Internet at large? The web is full of idiots.

Geoff: I read FriendFeed I just don't post very much. I enjoy reading Twitter and FF they can cetainly be informative and interesting. None of my friends are on Twitter so I was speaking from my experience with them, not all teens.
- Patrick Scoble
Todd: That is also absolutely true with students.
- Patrick Scoble
It is true but a lot of adults don't see the point of it either at the moment and I think it'll change.I'm 19 and I think it's more useful than Facebook etc.
- Craig Malone
kids dont use words or language, they communicat through hyperlinks & txt. as they get older, they'll appreciate the value of words
- echostreamer
Teens spend 6 or 8 hours a day within a few hundred feet of most of the people they know. Why would they need Twitter?
- Rob Sterling
the same reason they spend the next 8 hours glued to facebook and the internet instead of going outside to chill with those friends (no offense :)
- echostreamer
Yeah, but information on Facebook is shared the same way as in school - it's hierarchical and clique-based. Kids are more like base primates than adults. Twitter is too open, when they want to control the dissemination of information among those people they know in school.
- Rob Sterling
There are a lot of 13-15 year-olds on Twitter, just look around :) The best way to find them is to find a celebrity who might garner a teen following ... That said, Twitter is (for now) nowhere near as popular with teens as MySpace and Facebook, for sure.
- dcap
Also, most kids can't afford smartphones, and using Twitter exclusively by text message is mostly a one-way affair. It's pretty lame. I bet your 15 y.o. son loves to text and spends hours on Facebook.
- Steve Lynch
from twhirl
I think teens may be more privacy savvy than the media paints them. They know that a nasty Tweet about a school official can get them expelled; but a private txt is safe.
- Robert Hafer
How many teens are marketing gurus and life coaches? Kids aren't selling anything and see no need to sell themselves. THAT'S why they don't care about Twitter.
- Kimber Scott
Robert: it is worse than that. One message can get them shunned.
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
Just like my older friends, they have no desire to connect with the Twitter-verse at large. But for different reasons.
- Robert Hafer
I've been looking for the point for a long time :O) - To me it has become a place where I can "vocalize" things I've always just said to myself before. I just find it funny anyone actually "listens"
- Bill Rawlinson
I think its good that teens don't like twitter. We can get on here without them!
- Su Butcher
As a teenager I didn't see the point of reading a newspaper either, but now I work in one!
- | Balu |
I don't have any friends, so I'm forced to write for the world.
- Big K
Interns in my office say they know college friends starting to use Twitter. Of course, none of the interns actually do. Twitter seems to be good for celebrities and professional networking.
- Hutch Carpenter
What's the big deal ? Most teens don't follow current events like politics or the economy either, it's not what being a kid is about.
- Doug Randall in SL
So that means he will like Google Wave? = the next Teen Twitter
- Hans Kainz
We can't say that Google Wave is the next Twitter, it's more instant messaging than anything (and I'd say FriendFeed relates more to it than Twitter does).
- Hugh Isaacs II
I do deeply hope that Google Wave takes off. I really hate signing into my msn account just to keep in touch with friends who can't get on the GTalk bandwagon or just don't see the point.
- Chris Chua
I think if you could start a conversation like this one on twitter just like on ff or fb with commenting tweets or just parsing them when you reply, it would be a lot more interesting
- Kaysha
Interesting that the 15 year old kid who got the job at Morgan Stanley did so because his mum knew a chap who she met when dog walking - so not what he knew but who his mum knew, and because of that he had an audience for his opinion.
- Simon Rogers
Wrote a post about this a long time ago. Interaction will scale down as the possibilities to interact scale up. The next gen doesn't care about talking to the whole world. There is little value in it
- Alexander van Elsas

Just blogged on this subject. I don't believe this is a generational issue. It's about privacy and signal:noise ratio. When those degrade, communities migrate to new social networking services, regardless of group members' average age. http://lehawes.wordpress.com/2009...
- Larry Hawes
Hi there. We'd love to get Posterous added to Friendfeed. I know that it's just as easy to add an RSS feed, but you've added support for Tumblr, Skyrock, Livejournal and other blog platforms too. Not asking for special treatment. We're gonna do autopost integration on our end too, though. (coming soon) -Garry, cofounder, posterous.com
There's a lot of good stuff that people are sending to Posterous - users include Mike Arrington and Guy Kawasaki. Surprised there's not support for it yet.
- Sachin Agarwal
Posterous support would be appreciated.
- Jeff Benner
Garry: From a user perspective, Posterous is really slick. All the best to you guys.
- Nick in Manila
*bump* -- I have just imported a posterous of mine as custom atom/rss, but the resulting FF entry kinda sucks. Please add Posterous as a supported service!

Any suggestions on tools to introduce will be greatly appreciated (Twitter, Facebook, FriendFeed, Bitly, Google Alerts, BackType are all on the list already)

how do you compare it to tumblr and friendfeed (FF bookmarklet is very similar)?
- Rob Williams
Yeah, just started using it a bit this week. Need to figure out how to not just make it ta carbon copy of my blog, Facebook, Twitter, etc.
- Curt Mercadante
@Rob better than Tumblr. Dig into the power of it.
- Steve Rubel
I'm a big fan of Posterous... they handle media very well.
- Bwana ☠
I've been playing around with Posterous too but can't figure out what is unique about it???
- cyberjack
posterous > tumblr how? Seems the same 'cept how you get content there?
- Rob Williams
@Rob the nice thing about it is how you can choose where to syndicate and publish longer than you can on Friendfeed. Besides, for me at least, it all rolls up here anyway.
- Steve Rubel
Posterous is great, especially when paired with a new iPhone 3GS. Just email your pictures or video to the site and they get rendered quickly. Only issue I've noticed is if you hold the phone wrong, they render the video upside-down. I submitted a bug report and they are working on a video flip feature.
- Otto R. Radke
Steve, i'm going the opposite way, from micro to blog :-) Few months ago i checked Posterous, it has an impressive feature set, and syndication is sweet. The only thing missing IMO was Themes and Customization. I got a kind reply from Sachin saying it's coming soon. Can't wait to start posting!
- Majento
"I’ve got to agree with Mark here – the fave 5 for me are a quick way to answer the question “Who is this guy?” when someone mouses over my name on Friendfeed. That’s the way I use it whenever I’m trying to get a feel for a commenter’s background. It frustrates me when an interesting FF comment is posted by a stranger whose feed includes nothing more than Last.FM and Flickr entries. Maybe I’m too focused on jobs, but I always want to know “what’s your day job” when trying to get a handle on someone’s perspective."
- Daniel J. Pritchett
Wow, BackType picked this comment up in less than a minute after I posted. Is that because it's on a Wordpress.com hosted site? Now I just need to figure out why BT didn't immediately push it to FF via a SUP update. I had to manually refresh my BT feed in FF to cover that last mile.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
First image is a capture from the comments section of a Lighter Footstep article. The Backtype WP plugin has neatly harvested Twitter and FF comments (I only publish those which stand alone). The Backtype grab is a comment detail on the same article. Very useful. :-)
- Chris Baskind
The Backtype plugin is truly social. Click on the "More from Author" button, and the reader is presented with the commenter's profile on Backtype. Comments from SM can moderated in the same way as site comments. They can also be segregated from the site's native discussion (which I'll be doing from here forward). This trumps my objection of ripping SM conversations from their contexts...

- Kristian Salonen
Wave looks a little confusing (then again I'm at work, so I couldn't read the whole blog post), but the concept is interesting. I don't think it will be able to compete with Twitter if that's what they were aiming for.
- Ocean
I wonder if the FF designer brigade will dis this like they did the new FF UI?
- Daniel J. Pritchett
@Ocean - people will actually be able to get work done with Wave :P
- Daniel J. Pritchett
I'm just thinking of the people who are not even on Twitter, how will they digest this :)
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
I have the same concern - if middle management can't easily participate from their blackberries, then it's dead in the enterprise water.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
from IM
So my interpretation is that this is like an extension of email, that can integrate closely with other services.
- Daniel Sims
No prizes for guessing what my first idea for an application is....this looks very cool
- Cameron Neylon
It would be interesting to see how well this could work for collaborations.
- Pedro Beltrao
Sounds like advanced email service, where the email message is "alive", wiki type collaboration is evolved. Email+Wiki+Twitter meshup. And the UI is really not that much googlish . Very eager to see it!
- Nenko Ivanov
from the article and slides, it looks like FF rooms with live chat functionality and extensibility. FF is almost there already. maybe the presentation video when available will explain any differences better
- Wladimir Labeikovsky
FF as it exists currently *looks* like the enterprise collaboration holy grail. Its only problem is that no one wants to buy into a closed service hosted externally. Even if Wave is nothing more than a free self-hostable Friendfeed it will still blow the doors off of E2.0.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
from IM
[NINJA EDIT] And by "no one" I mean "no Fortune 100 CIOs". I'm sure you guys at FF aren't out to sell directly to the enterprise yet, but it's my area of interest and I've been daydreaming about how awesome it would be to use FF as a part of my official workflow. I think Wave is more likely to get there given your current featureset versus their current vaporset.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
good point Daniel, i had somehow missed that Wave would be a Google App and thus amenable to self-hosting, etc
- Wladimir Labeikovsky
I understand Wave team's desire to integrate and leverage existing, accepted forms of communication and collaboration. But doesn't that also limit innovation? I'd love to see someone take a "blue sky" approach to the problem of business communication and collaboration, rather than build on existing models.
- Larry Hawes
I know it may seem hard to believe by watching all the crazy stuff they show in the video, but it's actually very easy to use. Click 'new wave', start typing, add a recipient. Or you can add a recipient first. So in some sense it's actually simpler than email, because there are a lot fewer opportunities to make irrevocable mistakes (like, oops, sent too early). I can't wait to be able to use it publicly.
- Joel Webber
Nenko, I think you've done a superb job of succinctly describing Wave. Or, at least my perception of Wave after using it for a month or so :). And one thing people should keep in mind: this has been in development for a long time, so it's not like three months ago, Google thought, "ZOMG! Must respond to [insert other service name here]" :-)
- Adam Lasnik
Daniel, if "FF as it exists currently *looks* like the enterprise collaboration holy grail," how do you explain to these enterprise folks, that anyone can edit and delete their past contributions after the fact, thus soiling the conversational record? Business can not be conducted in such conditions. Clearly, before being of use FF would need to "stratify" their basic types of collaborative primitives - beginning with non-editable posts and comments.
- ianf ⌘
I didn't mean "looks like" as in "feature complete" just "resembles". Lots of the latest and greatest parts of FF are features that would make any E2.0 toolkit much more powerful. The rooms and multi-threaded DMs are particularly sweet.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
I can't see this being ready for the enterprise just yet, but sme's and startups definately. If they can also produce a mobile version for the iPhone and android markets it potentially is the next killer app.
- Keith Bennett
from BuddyFeed
ianf: "Business can not be conducted in such conditions." Are you kidding me? What about the telephone conversation. Business uses that just fine. It's one tool.
- Nick in Manila
It certainly wins on ease of use, but that's not enough in a business context. Accountability, being held to account, is. Truth be told, we really don't know if FFeeders paid any attention to enterprise use when originally designing it. Perhaps it can be evolved in this direction without lots of shouting, perhaps not. @Keith - FF is extremely text-input-centric. Neither of the two mobile devices is very good at this. But, fine, it does represent a step above even the most intelligent of mail/Gmail etc.
- ianf ⌘
Nick, there's a difference between telephone and print. As soon as text records are involved, there's the problem.
- ianf ⌘
ianf: Agree. It's not an auditable text record. But we've adapted to Wikipedia. It only takes you so far. You have accept it's not an absolute and use it for what you can.
- Nick in Manila
My problem with FF in the enterprise (and I try to use it that way) is the goofy name and logo.
- Nick in Manila
Wikipedia is a special case, but I have yet to hear of it being acceptable beyond colloquial use. FF is fine if treated as multi-threaded dialogue platform. Perhaps it's just me, but I always assumed that any heavy-duty business use presumes that a company runs it off its own/colo servers, not from platform-provider's own. We really don't know much of how FF works, but I suspect that...
- ianf ⌘
ianf: Yes re enterprise use. But as the enterprise becomes more and more atomized, this will become less and less of an issue. Although that's not the immediate future of Fortune 100s - which gives a huge advantage to smaller co's.
- Nick in Manila
@ianf: There *is* an auditable record. Didn't you notice the part where they show how you can always go back through the history of a wave to see its edit history? Not only is it possible, but it's easy and only takes a few seconds. It's really useful for getting context on a large wave when you come into it late.
- Joel Webber
@Adam Lasnik I'm sure that Wave is not a respond to any existing service. At Google there are smart people thinking ahead and I think that wave is a step forward in personal and corporate comunication
- Nenko Ivanov
Actually the platform looks like a response to Live Mesh and the product looks like a FF client powered by Gears but the interesting stuff is the protocol which could be used to bring consensus on how to, finally, implement track.
- Alberto Saavedra
Isn't that a bit premature to ask? Wave's just been announced, we don't know how FF will develop in few months' time, yet already now you want us to speculate whether some vaporware will be killerware of existingware rhetorical q.
- ianf ⌘
nope it isn't. i think this is the time for asking this.
- Yusuf Güzel
@Yusuf: I have to say I think the comparison is pretty inappropriate. The two products solve different problems completely. I use Wave at work, and even once it's fully open, I will continue to use FF, which I love as well. Besides, does the world really need another "Is X a Y killer?" poll?
- Joel Webber

I met Terry a while back. This thing really is awesome. My impression is that he's basically a little concerned with premature exposure. He has this idea of what it is and should be, and is worried that people won't get it. Maybe he's over it now-- joking aside, Scoble featuring is a big promotion. I hope he gets the attention he richly deserves.

Ha - I just found this thread in Google. Thanks for all the wishes. We're hoping to get an alpha out at the end of June. There's a TON to do before then though.

“Ever wanted to see the entire conversation surrounding a post? Now you can! This simple bookmarklet will load comments from Twitter, FriendFeed, Digg, Reddit, HackerNews and any blog mentioning the article and will load it in a handy sidebar.”

- bnoise

BackType Connect Plugin for Wordpress includes importing comments from FriendFeed, and tweets which link to your post... - http://www.backtype.com/plugins...
Well, I don't know yet, I haven't had a chance to try it :) ... I like the idea of bringing in FriendFeed comments about my posts onto the blog though. I don't know about twitter, because I think all they would get would be people recommending posts, not really any _discussion_ about them (which would quickly stop including the url).
- Joel Bennett
We let you decide which sources you want included -- we often recommend people disable Twitter as it doesn't bring much value to the conversation, but the plugin will still show how many tweets your post received.
