I love posts like this because I'm going to bed here in San Francisco just as Europe is waking up. Great to see the excitement spreading!
- Brett Slatkin
@Brett - since you are still up, got any recommendation for a GPL'ed XMMP server?
- Christian Bolstad
Yeah, XMPP, haven't had the morning coffee yet... I like Djaberred since I still got a soft spot for perl. Will continue to explore it :-) Thanks!
- Christian Bolstad
I didn't see any mountains when I tried it, I guess no topographic data yet. Is this Flash10, or does it use the Papervision 3D texturing hack? The textures looked perspective-correct, which the normal Flash hacks don't do, so I'm wondering how they did this, or if they used Flash10.
- Ray Cromwell
It's gotta be Flash 10, no? Otherwise there's no way in hell they could get the perspective correction, is there?
- Joel Webber
Great, I'll have to switch to Windows before visiting Google maps.
- Burcu Dogan
Is there no Flash10 for Linux? I think SVG has perspective transforms (as well as displacement mapping!) so there is the possibility of an HTML5 version doing this. Edit: an example, quality is kinda crappy in FF3.5, no bilinear filter and weird artifacts: http://www.tapper-ware.net/stable...
- Ray Cromwell
SVG has perspective transforms? I didn't know that. But it wouldn't really provide you a way to render textured triangles, would it? That's my problem with CSS perspective transforms as well -- they're cute, and useful for a limited set of things, but nowhere near a usable system for anything interesting in 3D.
- Joel Webber
I think you'd have to mimic texture coordinates by using canvas to offset/clip/mask each portion of the texture image and then use the perspective transform on the canvas, but maybe Brad Neuberg would know better, my SVG knowledge is limited.
- Ray Cromwell
That would be an interesting hack, but somehow I think it would just make me nauseous :)
- Joel Webber
Tack.

I get this all the time! He's my stunt double!
- Robert Scoble
We should chart the number of times this old chestnut appears. Or something. Amusing thing is it always seems to be exactly the same pics used for the example, lol
- Slappy Line
I always thought that Seymour Hoffman was Scoble's alter ego. I bet they have never been photographed together. Coincidence? I don't think so!
- Keith Beucler
Pretty close. :) Seymour Hoffman maybe underrated but he's a superb actor.
- jan geronimo
not that you don't get star treatment already ;) but you could walk into anywhere channeling PSH - best tables and autographs baby!
- BEX
Huh? I thought "Robert Scoble" was just PSH's on-line alter-ego...
- Adrian
I have thought that for a long time. Nice.
- Ben Hanten
It's Philip Seymour Hoffman's biggest role to date!
- Joshua M
Ok, to disprove the conspiracy... I propose that this *Robert Scoble* shave his head and appear in public. Although, I suppose PSH could just wear a wig.
- Adrian
I heard they're really twins separated at birth.

I was just watching State and Main yesterday that "the big secret" had been revealed to me

I am certain @scobleizer was used as a double in Doubt.
- Bernie Goldbach
Hehe... I've mentioned that to my wife several times. If they ever make a movie about Scoble, Phillip Seymour Hoffman it is (or vice versa).
- LionelatDell
OMG, congrats to Robert Scoble, you have won the Media Master Award for being a FriendFeed cheerleader. LOL.

So far the biggest problem with microformats is that most companies only offer 1 way support. They provide one for you, but don't take yours from elsewhere. Details: http://www.dotcult.com/who-sup...
- Ryan Jones
I'd love to have someone on Building43 to explain them. Anyone game?
- Robert Scoble
The Operator Firefox plugin was very useful for testing microformats. Hcard is useful when available.
- Jauder Ho
cork'd is a great example of hreview - we have building them into sites for about two years now
- Pat Strader
I would nominate @kevinmarks for this assignment given his work on RichSnippets
- Dilip Dand
FriendFeed uses the rel="me" microformat on the services page (e.g. http://friendfeed.com/paul...) to tag links to my other services. The Google Social Graph API uses these links to find you around the web.
- Paul Buchheit
i wrote a recent introduction if anyone is interested i can share, but do not wish to link drop
- Pat Strader
Google Profiles also uses this to guess links that belong to you.
- Jauder Ho
we build in hcard primarily as we deal with a great deal of tourism "directory" type sites
- Pat Strader
I'd love to have Tantek or Kevin on Building43 to explain microformats and show how to use them.
- Robert Scoble
i made some moo stickers if anyone wants some, let me know, microformats stickers have been hard to find for me!
- Pat Strader
Thanks Pat! Basic or not it is more than I knew 5 minutes ago!
- Marshall Huwe
dan cederholm used them years ago with cork'd - hreview
- Pat Strader
Pat - problem with that URL please resend tks
- courtney benson
marshall no problem, im very excited about them, just needs more evangelists
- Pat Strader
Scoble, besides Building43 ;) What is a great website to keep on top of the 2010 Web? Are there any web resources that you're particularly fond of? My favorites are Mashable, Read Write Web, and TechCrunch.
- Sam Houston
If someone wants to set up a local (SV) meetup, I'd be there. Trying to digest as much as I can since format adoption appears inevitable.
- Rick Bucich
if you want a couple sheets of the moostickers, just let me know...i printed 900 for blogpotomac, but they didnt arrive in time to take them....
- Pat Strader
if only eventful etc crawled for hcalendar...
- Pat Strader
The question I have about microformats is "how do you know you need them?" I know when I need to use DIV's or when I need some JavaScript but I'm still not along to the place where I know all the places I need microformats.
- Robert Scoble
I'd rather see HTML change to be separated into a set of semantic elements and organizational elements, then CSS adapt to work better with that separation, way more than I'd like to see microformats try and do this same thing through hackery of CSS.
- xero
robert i simply started wrapping any address, or review or event as a part of workflow
- Pat Strader
I'd love to come and explain microformats for your audience, Robert
- Kevin Marks
the point of microformats is to give common ways for people to express things on the web that are used a lot, like addresses, reviews, tags and events. They do this using standard HTML.
- Kevin Marks
Robert, we can chat about them at the SFAMA meetin on thursday - I think it fits into the panel's cope too.
- Kevin Marks
Kevin: yeah, let's do that. I'd love to take advantage of your free time before you get totally crazy busy with some hot startup.
- Robert Scoble
I loved melody piece on su.pr. And I've been using it all day
- Zachary Adam Cohen
How would someone find out who has adopted the format? i.e. review sites using hReview. I know of Yelp but also notice that Insiderpages is being pulled into Google & Yahoo Local.
- Rick Bucich
rick thats a great question, i have tried to find out who might be looking for them myself
- Pat Strader
yes, i have it use it quite a bit, i was trying to find places that might be going out and looking for them, not necessarily implementing
- Pat Strader
i use both operator and tails plugins are there others?
- Pat Strader
It doesn't appear that Operator supports hReview, am I correct? I'll check out Tails
- Rick Bucich
What is something simple I can do to incorporate microformats into my blog?
- Robert Scoble
This guy seems to be exceptionally authoritative on microformats or "microstructures" as he calls them: @luebken on Twitter and his blog, http://leubken.com, has a great post on "Overview of microstructures in use".
- Mike Elliott
the simplest thing to do, Robert, would be to make your contact info in the sidebar into an hCard; you're already mostly supporting hAtom from your template
- Kevin Marks
Is this like one of those CGI voting scripts on a website? A widget? You could make it be reviews of each of your videos, Robert. Why put up contact info to the masses? Reviews makes sense.
- Prokofy Neva
I have not looked much at hReview but this shows a hcard mockup (do view source) http://bit.ly/1vfp3i You should be able to use this right away after substituting your info. I did notice that Google does extract this into their excerpt for search results.
- Jauder Ho
A List Apart blog just posted a good article about RDFa, which you could use for semantic markup when a microformat isn't necessary or doesn't exist: http://www.alistapart.com/article...
- Chip Ramsey
Rob, I think it's incredibly smart. They have a *huge* controlled environment to work in now. They'll open up, gradually, but people will all-of-the-sudden have the ability to finally opt-out of whatever they want, even on the "open" web. You can't opt-out of the open web with Google - only their private offerings.
- Jesse Stay
For instance, you can create a robots.txt to prevent search engines from crawling your content, but that doesn't fully prevent indexing of everything
- Jesse Stay
You can't specify which of your family and friends see your videos on Youtube as well
- Jesse Stay
While I do see what you mean there, I still feel it's a bit lame having silly limits on how social you can be there while they show our own blogs in an Iframe...so it means people comment using it, not the blog itself... they take the piss really!
- Rob Sellen :o)
Facebook has one unified system to control everything. Google will take awhile to get such a system in place.
- Jesse Stay
you give to them...they take away from you...
- Rob Sellen :o)
Rob, you can integrate your blog with Facebook outside of the Facebook.com domain as well.
- Jesse Stay
The advantage is only those you want to see it can see it within the Facebook environment - you can make it entirely public, or entirely private. It's completely your choice.
- Jesse Stay
Facebook still has its limits, but they've proven they're aware of those limits and continue to fix them.
- Jesse Stay
I can't tell Google to only allow the content it indexes be available to just my family in its search results, for instance.
- Jesse Stay
What you mean by that? integrate it outside of it? How do I do that? I post blog to it, but it still shows in the Iframe.. and most there don't think about closing the Iframe... that's lame... IMO.
- Rob Sellen :o)
Rob, Facebook provides an entire API (Facebook Connect) for third-party websites. You don't need to import it into the Facebook environment if that is your concern. Simply let your blog publish links into Facebook, and track comments from there. Facebook gives you full control of that experience, and allows you to take it all back to your blog.
- Jesse Stay
Louis, sorry, been a busy day - 2 hours of sleep last night and just now catching up on FriendFeed
- Jesse Stay
Good. That means you're vulnerable, so as a bully, I will follow you around and point out your mistakes until you have a public meltdown. :)
- Louis Gray
Louis this is normal for me so either I'm already having a public meltdown or things are just fine ;)
- Jesse Stay
I see Jesse...thanks for explaining the API ... :o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
Oh the other hand, Facebook search seems extremely deficient compared to FF. I could not find a way to search for a specific word in my stream.
- Richard pancakhaus Walker
Richard, that's coming. It's those areas that Facebook still lacks, but have proven they are still very willing to expand.
- Jesse Stay
wait... someone on friendfeed that doesn't hate facebook?? i like it :)
- Frankie Warren
Facebook walls = bad = AOL, Which I hope will devour itself from the inside just as quickly (after they become the majority controlling partner in a media giant with nearly a century more credibility than themselves). I'd much rather use a different tool, with different owners for each of my online purposes, than Facebookopia.
- Matthew DeVries
And they will not "beat" Google, because Google does not play to win. Google classically plays to tie. Football coaches won't ever tell you that, but playing to the tie, and having infinite wind will always serve you better than a killer instinct.
- Matthew DeVries
Frankie, I wrote 2 books on Facebook. I have to like it. :-)
- Jesse Stay
Thanks Jesse .. now the other riddle is why Louis' "bully" comment is on BackType ... but is a FF thread comment, not part of a blog post. Is this an accident of where an item is found or something more gray and sinister ? :) (and no, people, don't start trash talking to get hits... It only caught my attention because it was atypical - at first glance anyway.)
- Richard pancakhaus Walker
Matthew, Facebook is much more than just a walled environment though. My website is part of Facebook, for instance, but it's a completely open environment, no walls. Yet I can put up walls where I want to.
- Jesse Stay
And so can they. You're share cropping on someone else's land.
- Matthew DeVries
Richard, BackType indexes FriendFeed comments. If you have an alert for a term, it will be caught.
- Louis Gray
jesse.. how do you feel about the fact they stop you being social.. IE block you for being to social? how can that be a good thing? I have been blocked once from commenting... it lasted a week.. great move.. I help my friends on there alot.. yet get kicked in the teeth...
- Rob Sellen :o)
Rob, they've got to get better at that. They have to do something though or spammers would rule the system like on Twitter. I have noticed fewer and fewer cases lately of suspended accounts though.
- Jesse Stay
I can see your point there mate and agree with it, but I am NOT a spammer, I have been stopped twice from commenting, surely they knew the truth after the first time. their lack of clarity on "limits" on the FAQ page is pathetic... how do you stop going over a limit you are not even aware of?
- Rob Sellen :o)
I know I'm not a guy, but I do wear ties sometimes. I go for the Half Windsor for casual looks. The 4 in Hand for a more formal look.
- Admiral Anika
I always use Four in Hand, but the blokes in our London office seem to feel that is uncouth and anything but a Windsor is unacceptable.
- Christopher A. Wichura
Pretty sure I do a Windsor, but I don't wear ties very often.
- Jordan Hofker
Used to be Four in Hand (I actually thought it was a Half Windsor until just now) but then I learnt how to do a Windsor a few years ago, so I always do that now. Never seen the Shell before. That looks pretty interesting…
- Tony Ruscoe
from fftogo
When I do it myself, four in hand. When a lady is doing it for me, usually a windsor.
- Beau Liening
I think Four In Hand. Never think about it though. Would you believe once I started wearing ties again, I just googled "How to Tie A Tie"? So... I've done it the way that video said ever since. :)
- Louis Gray
4 In Hand or Half-Windsor. 4 in Hand is most versatile, but some of my shirts require the Half-Windsor because the collar is so wide. I need to learn some more knots though...
- Tad
from fftogo
Four-in-hand, although I had no idea how it was called. I'll play around with the other ones the next time I'm going to wear a tie -- some of my ties are too long, and the four-in-hand knot is often slightly uneven.
- Tudor Bosman
from email
I am relieved to know that the four-in-hand is a legit tie knot. I always felt a little embarrassed thinking I didn't know the "real" way to knot a tie.
- invariant - farewell FF
The full Windsor knot is just too bulky for anything but the best silk ties. At school I was lazy and wore a four-hand knot, but on the rare occasions that I sport a tie now it's the half-Windsor
- Slappy Line
I see that I invented Windsor by myself(i.e. none showed me but I knot windsor). Four in hand is the most popular style in Turkey btw.
- Burak "cyrus" Bayburtlu
four in hand ...quickest easiest n still has a sexy dimple
- viki saigal
At last something practical I could use! lol
- Kevin J Hatton
Half-Windsor or Four-In-Hand depending on the shirt and the width of the tie.
- ha3rvey (Ho)^3
(OT) Friendfeed do need a poll feature
- Jérôme Flipo
I ran the Men's Furnishings area at Robinson's (when there was a JW Robinson's) and men would call have us pick 5 shirts and 5 ties to go with a couple suits for a week long business trip. Almost everyone of them asked that we tie the tie and put it on the shirt so they could loosen it - and wear it without re-tieing the tie! My knot of choice? Half Windsor!
- Robyn Hawk
learned to do a four in hand myself after watching someone else do it. However, I detest ties - horrible things. Was forced to wear one thru school and when I started work. After the 4th time I caught it under my knee while crawling under desks I refused to wear one. When I did one of my vertical slice episodes last month where I dressed up as the spy from TF2 was the first time I had worn a tie since about 2002. No time for them soul sappers. Next up, abolition of the suit! ;)
- alphaxion
Actually, after looking at this again, I do the Full Windsor

fan bloody tastic! So we can post here and Twitterers can comment away without any complaints! The only think you need to try and do is bring in comments (about a share) from twitter into here! :)
- Zee.
This is great...should help new users quite a bit.
- Mark Krynsky
OK, I admit I'm dense. As an existing user will this help me find the folks I follow on Twitter?
- Laura Norvig
Cool, is it possible we could have the ability to bulk import or non-FF Twitter friends as private feeds so we can track them in FF? :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Laura, existing FriendFeed users should just go to http://friendfeed.com/friends... and click on the Twittter (and Facebook and Google) icons to find their friends. Kol, not yet, but I'm hoping to add something like that soon (improved imaginary friends).
- Paul Buchheit
Thx, Paul - guess I haven't been to that page since the launch. btw, I'm definitely coming around to the new friendfeed (colors notwithstanding).
- Laura Norvig
Great to see the standards working -OAuth fro Gogole and Twitter login on Friendfeed
- Kevin Marks
That's a great tool, Paul! Found a few from Twitter and Facebook I didn't realise were on FF...:)
- WorldofHiglet
Oh man, that is suh-weet. Works really well.
- Laura Norvig
Paul, that would be wonderful, thank you. I'm keen to use FF as a kinda Twitter client. I'd love the ability to import my group I've created on Tweetvisor too but that would additionally require exporting facilities from Tweetvisor, and from asking them they've told me it's low priority (which is fair enough).
- Kol Tregaskes
That's fantastic! Sharing with all of my not-yet-friendfeedified twitter friends. Thanks, Paul!
- Eric Johnson
This IS good. Thanks for the hard work, Benjamin Golub.
- Micah Wittman
Love that you guys are making the entry more enticing. What about refining what FriendFeed is further? Like: Twitter + conversation. For new people who don't get it and most without the time to get it, simplifying the message or experimenting further with your "first impression" on your splash page might be worth a try. Example: wouldn't it be cool to have a live conversation streaming to show just how FF has a leg up on the scattered Twitter stream?
- kilbuda
WOW! 313 new Twitter people! Amazing what the OAuth did. Amazing. That just completely Rocks!
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
That was just too easy, and found a bunch of Twitter people. I just subscribed, but I hope they participate. I'm sure I'll have to trim later.
- Eric @ CSTechcast.com
Thanks for everything Benjamin and the others, that is really great. :)
- Alp
I was subscribed to exactly 100 of the people I follow on Twitter. Added 93 more. Funny, this is actually helping me find people I *don't* want to follow in either place.
- Laura Norvig
I'm looking forward to the "advanced imaginary friends" section which lets me as an existing FriendFeed user view all the twitter updates from people that don't use FriendFeed.
- Brian Sloane
Just posted this to my stream then saw this, Cool stuff Paul
- Charlie Anzman
Some time ago I spent lots of time in removing my Facebook-Friendfeed integration, and didn't succeed, Facebook refused to remove it. Since that - no info about any other my services to Facebook, ever.
- orie
Happy to hear that there will be an improved imaginary friend option!
- Jacob
The improved imaginary friend feature will be great. No need to visit Twitter much then!
- Pinksy
How do we give virtual bucks to Paul, oh I see a like button here. Off to work on the influence funnel, who cares about dollars, I want eyes ;)
- Mark Essel
FriendFeed is constantly bringing new value to the service. I'm loving it!
- Amie Gillingham
I just imported 8,000 new Twitter friends. Worked MUCH BETTER than last time.
- Robert Scoble
Smart move guys. A quick way to grow FF users is to tap into the current hot properties. Can't believe other Social Networks are so slow to respond.
- Neill Adamson
Paul, is there a way to sync it so that people I no longer follow on Twitter are unfollowed on FriendFeed?
- Jorge Escobar
Great news on the advanced imaginary friends. That plus the ability to comment back to Facebook posts as easily as we reply to Twitter would be killer.
- Kevin Kuphal
Ca passe 50 fois par jour ce truc là sur FriendFeed ! C''est pas possible d'arr^ter, j'en ai marre de le voir franchement ... ^^
- Jean-Marie Gall
from twhirl
@Robert cannot seem to do that with groups. What I want to do: Concentrate different RSS feeds (e.g. newswires) which do not necessarily have an account in any other social network into one imaginary friend's collection of feeds.
- Mark Jacobs
Mark, "groups" (formerly "rooms") are able to import feeds just like regular users (and imaginary friends). See https://friendfeed.com/xoogle-... for example (imports the blogs of all known xoogle startups). The only thing special about imaginary friends is that they don't have usernames (or rather we assign a random 128 bit username).
- Paul Buchheit
Paul, the DM option on imaginary friends should perhaps be removed. Also, imaginary friends do not show up on the search dropdown list when you type in their name in the search box.
- Kol Tregaskes
Paul, is it possible to automatically create "imaginary friends" from twitter following list? What I would like is to read all my Twitter in FriendFeed; many of twitterers though are not on FF, so I have to create them by hand which is tedious. Also, it would be nice to allow to add them to some special list.
- Ihar Mahaniok
Ihar, see my comment up in the middle and Paul's reply. Looks like FF are working on it. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Still would like an imaginary friend than making bunch of Groups to simulate peoples that doesn’t use FF. BTW, unlike the Facebook Connect login, when I tried logging in using Twitter, it made a new account for me on FF instead of opening my own (which also has Twitter activity added).
- Natsuki Seika
