Bret, just thinking out loud if there were a REST interface for the backend that worked like the REST interface for the client, I would be able to program both ends without having to learn the internals of your system. It would be really elegant, and probably wouldn't cost that much in overhead. I was able to create an interface to the client side of your realtime API in an hour or two....

David Bisset, you're right. there is a one-button backup option. but it has not worked as well (or at all) for some users (it worked for me). as for all the ways to make WP more secure, that's great if you are tech savvy with 1-2 blogs. when you are an "average" user or have multiple clients using WP, it's not so attractive.

Just a big surprise to see that the 33 % of these good sites (ffsummary, ffsms and ffholic ) are created by Turkish developers. We are very close to these tools. Hi Nick! Better in that it was quite easy to customize for me. If you recall, the TM button showed the same counts across the board, and said (via @tweetmeme), etc. Bit.ly is so far, trusted, and "safe" and the code is all hosted locally. Yes, the RSS doesn't work, but we hadn't run yours through RSS on my site yet either. So for me it's a win all around.

I had no clue why anyone would use Dave Winer's Twitter OPML tool to get all tweets from friends via RSS. But I tried it anyway and discovered that it's easier to find the really relevant stuff when you get tweets via RSS. I can skim through 1,000 tweets in a few minutes and separate the signal from the noise much more efficiently. And, of course, it's all searchable in GReader.

I'm with Louis on this. RSS is far from over. Like Louis, the number of feeds I'm subscribed to is on the increase, too. Services like Lazyfeed and Toluu are making it far easier for me to discover great new content.

Taking into account that Im far from been an expert, I want to leave a thought. What if the way of use is simply different I mean, ok twitter is real time while RSS has some minutes delay, but in any case if I receive 900 hits/day I will not be able to read them all as they come so I dont see the problem on getting some delay.To me is just a question of leaving the noise on Twitter as is much more quick to read and pass through the news & info and get the selected ones on RSS for better storage and record.

I use FF, Twitter and Google Reader for different things. Twitter and FF are far more about Buzz and the conversations around the topics. In Reader I aggregate many different original sources together. There is less need for it to be on-the-spot live, but it needs to be deeper and more detailed to be of value, and it is. They serve different purposes for me.

RSS is very alive and well and dare I say, even young. With tech news, there aren't necessarily thousands of sources like with general business news, etc. Where RSS will be big is in who can create the best filters for those larger niches. But the RSS readers we have today don't support all the features we'd need to create those filters. Google Reader management taps out at maybe 1500 feeds in Chrome, the most of any reader that can export opml (not just rss like Friendfeed).

I agree that the problem with RSS is filtering. If something changed the way I use the Net was RSS, but now the volume is so great that unless you prune your feeds regularly you can end up with a lot of garbage. Most average users don't have any idea of what RSS is and that's something that can't cease to amaze me.

RSS & EMAIL are not dead. They are getting better and faster. PUSH tech can push anything. Push Email on mobile devices is just as fast as twitter. And now we are going to PUSH RSS/ATOM. Twitter is different, yet the same. Sure, maybe a news headline will break first on twitter but will I see it before I see it in my inbox or reader? Prob not because I'm not frozen staring at a twitter...

What! Ewww. I love wildlife. Especially since I lived on a National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island. From Salmonella Infection to extremities blowing up like balloons. I've seen it happen as a result of handling Turtles and Iguanas. The first photo obviously is the result of a flood and the second appears to be farm-raised turtles. But still.

The *idea* of FF is not dead though. The ability to do what we can here is ALWAYS going to be required. The set up here is the closest thing we have on the internet that replicates just talking to a group of your friends. Twitter's design almost ensured 40% of tweets would be pointless. FF comments by definition are only as pointless as the conversation itself. It is inevitable that a FF type service will eclipse a twitter type service.

The whole "RSS is dead" is a broad sweeping statement positioned to get a rise, and meaningless without context. Why? How? What exactly does that mean "RSS is dead" Its usefulness serves people, then its very much alive.

Honestly. Declaring something "dead" because it doesn't have that new-car-smell anymore, and somebody's trying to, heaven forbid, *commercialize it* is just a sign of tech-ADD. CORBA was supposed to be dead, but it's still alive. COBOL was supposed to be dead, but MicroFocus is still making money. Hell, even DOS isn't dead, or filesharing, or the music industry, or old media. They just don't have that magical infinite potential of the blank piece of paper anymore.
