Inspired by zoblue and Ken Sheppardson, here is a Greasemonkey script that dynamically adds the service icons to each post.

zoblue was headed in the right direction here (http://beta.friendfeed.com/zoblue...), but had the limitation of needing a CSS style created for each service. I was able use the API to grab the service icon dynamically.

Kol, I think Davide means that it doesn't work on private feeds. I'm using FF's public API so it won't work for private entries. I'll take a look at the Chrome issue.
- chrisofspades
Between this, AJ's Cleaner Friendfeed, and pausing realtime, it's actually starting to become usable for me. Just need to work on easily finding everything I want and I'll be all set. (don't worry, I am working on that one myself)
- April Russo (app103)
chrisofspades is working on a new release with some code I contributed to get the icons insertion working in realtime. Stay tuned!
- Micah Wittman
Updated to include realtime support! many thanks to Micah. Note: There will be a popup if you install this version that says you don't have the current version. Just ignore that for now. This should be accurate for any future versions though.
- chrisofspades
Misconfigured scriptId value - please don't install until amended. A new comment will update the status of the fix. Thank you for your patience. UPDATE: FIXED!
- Micah Wittman
UPDATED again to fix error in Micah's comment above
- chrisofspades
Bump the hell out of this thread. This is my favorite bit of code I've seen in the last 2 weeks.
- Matthew DeVries
<cry> I can no longer see them in the iPhone feed, but at least this script, updated to look at 'regular' url still gives the fix needed for full service use !
- David HC Soul
Bump for eterinity - seems FF would be able to do this natively if someone was able to knock up a script to do it so easily.
- Matthew DeVries
Works well with Cleaner FriendFeed :) Thanks!
- AJ Batac
Weirdly for me it doesn't always include icons for twitter posts. For many it just has a lock icon on twitter posts.
- Quasar
Quasar, all twitter posts? it's possible some of them are coming from a private feed.
- chrisofspades
Can't believe it's come to this to get back an important visual clue when trying to process a real-time stream of updates. C'mon, Felicia Day says she wants the icons back. That's good enough for me! http://ff.im/2x34Z
- Ryan
Ahh. It's not all twitter posts where the icons don't appear, its just all posts made from imaginary friends (no matter what service it comes from). Can't remember if that was true pre the new FF.
- Quasar
UPDATED by Micah for greasekit compability and better performance.
- chrisofspades
This should be a standard option in FF (along with CleanerFF) - toggle on/off options??
- Allan Besselink
This has started becoming intermittent on FF :( :sad panda: is it the themes?
- Zulema ◕ ◡ ◕
which theme are you using zu? and which version of the script?
- chrisofspades
I'm using the Flowers theme, along with AJ's "Cleaner FriendFeed w/themes support" but the "FFbeta Service Icons" script doesn't mention a version number
- Zulema ◕ ◡ ◕
Finally! Service icons even if its a script. One feature I sorely miss from the old FF. Why the reluctance to bring it back?
- Kamath (नमः)
Just added my Viddler feed to Friendfeed. I'm pretty impressed it picks up the video screen cap. Maybe I should stop complaining about no Viddler support on FF.
Argh, read the comments and the dates. I tried playing with that when he wrote it in 2005 and got nowhere. Was able to do some things, but not others. No responses from questions to the google reader google group. Unless there's a change, don't bother.
- Karl Anderson
Try using the Ajax Feed API - http://code.google.com/apis.... This has been developed in the years since and provides nearly all of the Reader functionality that Niall was getting at, plus more.
- DeWitt Clinton
Would love a way to do things like sync my del.icio.us and Google Reader URLs. Best way I found back then was del.icio.us to OPML and manually importing that in Reader, which kind of sucks.
- Karl Anderson
DeWitt- you mean use the Ajax Feed API to re-implement Google Reader? No thanks :) Or do you mean that this API can add and remove feeds from my Google Reader account, similar to what Niall's article suggested that REST API could do? It didn't look like that from skimming the docs.
- Karl Anderson
Oh, I meant for reading and discovering feeds, which was one of the things Niall uncovered with the Reader JS api. That functionality is now officially supported with the Ajax Feed API. I don't believe there is an official API for subscribing/unsubscribing yet.
- DeWitt Clinton
The down side to the ajax feed api is that (to my knowledge) it doesn't allow you to get to reader's cached list, which ones you have or haven't read yet, or your existing feed list. I'm pretty sure there's an undocumented json api that reader uses, but I think it's about as stable as gmail's internal json api (i.e., not very).
- Joel Webber
Our JSON API has been pretty stable, there's a few iPhone apps (e.g. Byline) and desktop clients (Feedly, ReadAir) that use it unofficially. Cleaning it up for official release is on our todo list. It's been there for three years, but it's still there. BTW, http://code.google.com/p... is a more recent set of unofficial docs than Niall's blog post.
- Mihai Parparita
Sorry about that everyone, this popped up in my Google Reader and I didn't notice the year. Thanks for the update, Mihai.
- Andy Baio
TGDaily has picked this story up as new, but didn't link because they noticed the year. Pretty lame.
- Tom
I can't wait until I can use stylish on Chrome.
- Mattie Kenny
That's handy. I am totally digging the boxes. I didn't like the font change in the style I picked but a quick edit of the script made everything clean again. Great tip!
- Heidi Cool
So which style works best, which theme are you guys using?
- Wolfman-K
I've been using Cleaner FriendFeed (URL: http://userstyles.org/styles...) with the comment color removed. Makes things a little easier to track, especially comments from people I'm subscribed to.
- Mark Trapp
Google Gears for Safari BETA. I've played with it a little and initially it appears to work just fine with my Google Docs SSB. - http://groups.google.com/group...
Thanks for the vids Todd. With the new feature in Uberview, it's possible to have a number of web apps in one fluid app. Could group into say, 37Signals apps... Google apps and so on. It has reduced the clutter on my dock.
- Jonathan Kong
thanks jonathan... i'm very glad to hear you like the feature. I've never been as pumped about anything in Fluid as I am with the Uberview and what it allows the plugins to do... woohooo!!!1!1!!
- iTod Pouch
Wow, setting this up and using the new theme in Fluid.app makes the whole MobileMe web app suite a pretty damn neato little package. I would totally use this on say a work laptop that I didn't want to bother setting up with iCal and Mail. Very slick indeed.
- Adam Turetzky
Great episode. Any chance of an audio podcast version? I tend to have time to listen to TWIT, Net@Nite and the rest in the car, less so when I'm near my computer.
