I would like to share a very touching story of a remarkable woman and her family who, even at great odds and struggles, never lost hope, faith and love for each other. November 25th of last month, I came across an online article about a mother's battle for her life. After reading it and visiting the web site posted in the article, I became highly moved by the story and the events that lead to and after her ordeal, and the difficult trials faced by her family to save her life. 27-year-old Jennifer Yim was diagnosed with a stage 4 form of gastro-intestinal and ovarian cancer with Krukenberg tumor—a rare form of cancer that is more inherent with women of Korean and Japanese descent. For over a year after being diagnosed with a terminal condition, Jennifer and her family continued to remain strong, hopeful and resolute in finding a specialist doctor who could save her. She and her sister, Jane, established the web site Savejenn.wordpress.com as a medium of contact, information and diary...

Carving an Artist Seal on Stone, again. With a larger stone chop or do-jang in my growing collection of Asian seals, I decided to recreate my previous artist seal by executing a different design approach and style. For this version, I was inspired by seal designs from Tibet—in particular, ancient seals bearing sacred scripts with a thick border design. My aim was to depict Hangeul (Korean) writing in the style of the Tibetan Phags-Pa script. The origins of both written language system dates back to two famous monarchs. King Sejong the Great (May 7, 1397 – May 18, 1450) of Korea's Joseon Dynasty era is credited for commissioning the discovery of Hangeul as a unified literary language. Phags-Pa was commissioned by the Chinese emperor Kublai Khan (September 23, 1215 – February 18, 1294) as a unified writing system of the Yuan Dynasty. A closer look at both writing systems show common fontographical characteristics and traits. They also share the same "square script" or box layout design....

My Artist Seal on Qingtian Stone "A seal is a testament to the kind of craftsmanship produced by an artist. By stamping his seal on an artwork, the artist proudly stands behind the level of his expertise and the quality of his work." I made my Asian-style seal—also called Chinese Chop 朱砂 or Dojang 도장 in Korea—on a beautifully decorated Qingtian soapstone. For this project, I was able to acquire a pair of stones to carve on. I used one stone for my artist seal and I plan to use the other for my studio seal. I used a self-inking Japanese brush pen to create my seal calligraphy. Below is a sample image of wet and dry brushstrokes made by the pen. I made many variations to the calligraphic work before settling on a final seal design for the stone. I tried smooth, fluid brush strokes as well as rough style strokes. I experimented on center-squared layouts and circular layouts. As a graphic designer & illustrator rather than a traditional Asian calligrapher, my inspirations came more from...
