Can you remind me again where to find those stats?
- Brian Johns
Brian, go to "Me" link (http://friendfeed.com/brianjo...) which defaults to the Feed tab. Look at the sidebar on the right, below Discussion.
- Micah
0.75 (926/1226) - still relatively new here
- mikepk
I only see my stats for the last week (17/14 = 1.21) Please tell me your 670 number is for more than just a week!
- Brian Johns
1.44 (566/391) for brianjohns (after week tally you should see a comma then 'all time' count - I can see it on your page)
- Micah
OK, sorry. I'm a total dumbass. I stopped reading after the weekly totals...
- Brian Johns
3.74, which seems way off of everybody else's. I wonder what that says. I comment a lot more than I like.
- Cyrus Lendvay
FFers use FF with their own strategy or simply default tendencies. The ratio is an interesting snapshot of behaviour. Thanks for joining in everyone, hope more keep flowing in.
- Micah
from twhirl
0.66 - I tend to 'like' things without needing to comment further, I guess, and I notice I usually like the things upon which I comment. Well, frequently.
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
.39 (2457/6242) I guess I don't comment much. I do 'like' a lot of things, it would seem.
- Bren
0.62 then again i have over 11,000 comments
- Cee Bee
1.23 (5287/4229) - I am put to shame by Cee Bee's participation, good grief!
- Lindsay
So far: Average: 1.27 | Median: 0.81 ... (if you average 1 comment per like, you'd be 1.0 ... if you're 0.xx you might herd content more than discuss ... if you're whole numbers above 1 you may not 'like' much or discuss plenty or both)
- Micah
InPerpetualMotion(Gina k), I really liked this 'Like' of yours (in a series of pics, so I flickr fav'd it): http://friendfeed.com/e... and commented. Thanks!
- Micah
.68 6986/10194 Someone wrote a great article on the comment-like ratio a few months ago. Search on FriendFeed is crashing on me... I'll try to get the link.
- Mitchell Tsai
Thanks Mitchell (btw, search crashing on me too - lots)
- Micah
1316 comments/20221 likes (0.06), according to Windows Calculator, although I probably screwed up.
- Tyson Key
A recent change in FF: now the comment count shows total number of comments (previously multiple comments in one thread only counted as one) http://friendfeed.com/e... so all the numbers above are from the old methodology....
- David HC Soul
My new ratio: 0.76 all time (old methodology .52).... this week 1.39
- David HC Soul
Looks like my ratio as flipped again (comments back to dominating again). Seems to match my own awareness I've lately been commenting without Liking (commenting is my inherent recognition of value to me and the additional Like is when it merits an extra bump to help discovery by others).
- Micah
Rick, you mean that face with glasses I photoshopped tint into with an apparently disembodied arm which is actually very much attached to my eldest son? It's mostly just me :)
- Micah
Thanks, Michael. Yes, you have a rising tide of comment percentage (oh, wow, you were one of the originals from January - cool!)
- Micah
Yeah, that's a decent upward rise in comments, Nicholas.
- Micah
.6 (6,000/10,000) 3rd update - Now it's time to flip this on its head. My goal is to have (16,000/16,000) next time I post here. Regardless of what happens, I'm just looking forward to the next 10,000 comments, likes, posts, and new relationships I make here. It's all good!
- Michael Fidler
1.76 (7539/4290) My commenting habits haven't chanced much, but it felt like I clicked Like a lot less, and this ratio confirms that for me.
- Micah
.82 as of right now. edit: on January 8th it was 0.39 -- when I saw that, I decided to make more of an effort to comment. When I hit 10k "likes" I decided I wouldn't "like" anything else until I also had 10k comments.
- Bren
Jimminy, I'm copyrighting every single number. It's kind of a honeypot ;) Actually, it was curiosity mostly, but I also hope to build a sampling (small and self-selecting as it may be) for anyone who might want to analyze it.
- Micah
Wow I didn't realize I was so out of whack!! 12.23 that's got to be a record (and I don't even import my feeds with the summary as a comment)!!
- Chris Myles
Thanks JA, Chris (wow, 12+ is unusual :), Serkan and Nine!
- Micah
Micah.. I told you I take my likes seriously; ). You *might* want to ask (in a separate post) what percentage of likes were used to "bookmark" a post or save it for later VS actually "liking it". I NEVER used like for that.. but I did use a private group that if filled with my own topics (and comments)..
- Chris Myles
Likes are down relative to comments, which matches my much lower frequency of liking. I'm a more selective liker than ever.
- Micah
I don't think I could argue that any particular kind of ratio is "best", because if Lurkers like to Lurk and cultivate (via Likes) and the Chatty-ites love to chat, to pump out much many more comments than Likes, each can be happy and make for a great social experience.
- Micah
wow, what a difference time makes, when i 1st posted on this thread, 6.43%, now = 1.25%, for a 5.18% difference, :o (and this is the earliest post to date i've recovered of my activity on ff)
- chaz2b
chaz, I think there's been a big fluctuation for most people (maybe not that much). This is the oldest post on which you commented that you've recovered?
- Micah
that was my third post... It's interesting to see how the number has changed. of course, I manipulated the number to a degree, because I stopped "liking" things for a while...
- Bren
Bren, the other thing that can seriously throw off someone's stats is a feed that upon each item it imports adds a comment automatically.
- Micah
true. that can seriously inflate comment stats, of course. Then you have someone like RAPatton, who posts a gazillion comments, in part because of his playlist posts where he will list each song in a separate comment. I found, after this post in fact, that I tended to "like" things much more frequently than comment on them, that I was lurking instead of participating. I have changed the way I use ff rather considerably, and I think for the better.
- Bren
In 4 days it will be 1 year since my first recorded stat here. My comments/like were almost a 1:1 ratio then. Now comments are almost double likes for me.
- Micah
75,415 comments/1,286 likes = 58.64 - i wish the auto inserted comments didn't get counted... the true number is probably much much close ot my number of likes
- Chris Heath
1.97%. thanks again micah, this has been a great metric to measure my first year here on ff. As the year went (this being the first record of me being here that i've found): , 6.43%:1.25%:1.97%
- chaz2b
Chris, Bren, thank you. And chaz2b, thank you too - glad it's a special marker for you. :)
- Micah
63.58 (97,534/1,534) -- interesting that my last three digits are the same there, eh? (note, i already posted a month or two ago when i first saw this thread)
- Chris Heath
Last year my comments were around 7000 and likes around 2500, for a ratio of 2.80. I consciously chose to do more liking over the last year. As of today my comments number 10,782 and likes number 7,666, for a ratio of 1.41.
- Stephen Mack
Jason, Stephen - cool. Thanks for keeping updated here. :)
- Micah
Okay, Micah. <----I had to resist the urge not to post that because I know it's going to up my comment count. ;)
- Jenny R
But how many of those primordial, high interest posts are still active. Uh huh. :)
- Micah
Thanks, Morton. BTW, when you posted in February, it was exactly 0.13 also.
- Micah
Jenny, resistance is futile; embrace the rising tide of comments.
- Micah
Comments are more difficult and time consuming than Likes. I'd be happy about a high comment:likes ratio except that many are surely imported from feeds, while every Like is manual.
- Mike Chelen
it has changed to 2.2256 now as Sep, 6 2010.Labor Day. :) I added the date for future references.
- ۳۰ مرغ Loves Y'ALLLLL
Two years later and my ratio has climbed from 3.4 to 4.675. I've got a lot to say, apparently.
- Kevin Fox
Funnily, I didn't notice until after leaving that comment that when I reported my stat in 2009 I also followed it up with "I've got stuff to say." I didn't say it was *new* stuff...
- Kevin Fox

Great Bret! I remember that in the past some persian people wrote here that whould be nice to have FF interface also in persian, probabilly because their language is very different and english isn't so diffused such in Europe. A welcome to persian friends! :)

Roll call...this can be great if we all participate. Add yourself to this shared map. I created a placemark on the 2 major intersections near where I live.
- Mark Krynsky
Mo, I'm a newb to the shared maps stuff, but I turned on collaboration and allowed anyone to edit the map. There should be an edit button and then you can add a placemark.

Robert bought me a new house in the northern suburbs.

@Bec...nice. You are the first brave female on here.

Cool idea, Mark! I was thinking something like this would be fun the other day. Duly added myself - or at least the nearest big intersection. ;)

Thanks for the profile tip - I hadn't updated it since I moved here!

Thanks guys. This is coming along nicely. It's great to have as a resource to see where everyone is from. Hopefully this can become a standard feature on FF one day.

I've read the instruction and still don't see the button thing to add myself. I'm feeling pretty stupid right now.

@Jill, make sure you are logged into your Google account and then click on the edit button above the list of names already on the map. You will then see the pushpin in the upper left hand side of the map.

Added. Seems like there are a lot of us in the Bay Area...we must do a get together at some point.
- Neal "thePuck" Jansons
@Neal yea, we really need a FriendFeed meetup. I might be up there for Web 2.0 in March...or we can have one at SXSW if a large number of us are going. Let's plan and get the Upcoming page going.
- Mark Krynsky
@Mark Not gonna make SXSW, but am definitely down for working on an FF get together. March is long enough away to make sure plenty of people have time to plan ahead. I added you on Upcoming so we can start coordinating it. Anyone else interested/want to help set this up?
- Neal "thePuck" Jansons
Maybe we can talk Paul & Bret into letting us invade the FF offices for a meetup in conjunction with Web 2.0? That would be sooooo cool!
- Mark Krynsky
Pinned! sheesh this just cost me 1/2 hour of time as I scrolled thru all the folks :)

"Hyderabadi Biryani is my ultimate recipe for a flavorful rice. The bite of protein, the aroma of spices, the tang from lime, sweetness of onions and touch of herbs make this biryani a top favorite of my family and guests in any daawat. Two kinds of Biryani are commonly made in hyderabad, "Kacchi" and "Pakki". "Kacchi" literally meaning raw is prepared by layering uncooked meat. The "Kacchi" Biryani ,usually prepared by expert "Bawarchis" ,requires a thick bottom vessel for meat to cook through without burning and rice has to be precisely half cooked while promptly making layers before rice cools. I prefer making the easier "Pakki" biryani in which cooked meat is layered with rice. The following recipe is of "Pakki" Biryani."
- Anika

It's been probably about 8 months since I've made a biryani and I awoke craving this. Hope I can find my saffron, it's been way too long since I've used it.
- Anika
This looks so good, I'm hungry. Your knowledge of hyderabadi biryani's is great too. Lots of other varieties of biryani out there. Don't forget to have this biryani with Mirchi ka salan (chillis melange) or bagaire baingan (aubergine stew) and raita (mixed yogurt) of course
- Aaman (Clone of FF)
Friend of mien was comparing biryani in India to pizza here. People get very passionate about it. "Hydrabad biryani sucks!" despite hearing about how great it was at work for about 1/2 hour the day before.
- anna sauce
I have only had biryani a few times, but I really liked it. Haven't tried cooking it myself, though.
- ha3rvey (Hugs 50% off!)
Aaman, that first part above is from the site, though I do know my biryanis since I started learning to cook them in '87. I always have mine with a raita and of course, the chilis because that's what I'm used to. I'm just more excited about being able to used vegetables and herbs from my garden for this.
- Anika
I love Biryani! I don't think I'll try making it though. There are so many great Indian restaurants in my part of NJ. Thanks for sharing! :-)
- sean808080
Off to make the biryani. Using chiken (boring!) because I forgot to buy lamb.

Anika, my first job out of school was in Hyderabad - lived there for about 1.5 years and had the most amazing food possible. If I am ever in your part of the US, I hope I can come make some Hyd biryani and Salan for you.

Why is Erhan Erdogan in the middle of the atlantic ocean on the map? Is he in the Bermuda Triangle or something? lol
- Alan Le
@Micah, great job on recruitment. Eli has added himself and we now have all 7 continents filled.
- Mark Krynsky
Erhan probably got moved accidentally. When I got to the page, and was moving the map, I accidently grabbed someone and moved them to the middle of the Atlantic. Thankfully, it was someone who used a special icon, so it was easy to search and put them back.
- Anika
Hmm, apparently I'm just up the road from Haggis.
- Rob H.
I just added myself. Curious - how do you get different placemarks? I like the Google-looking ones that aren't quite raindrops.
- Tamar Weinberg
Just an addendum to Spidra's explanation: To go back and edit, click the pushpin then click the "Edit" button (look waaay to the left on the page). Then you can click the icon to change, and you'll see Save button next to "Edit"
- Micah
Oh cool. Nice job reviving this guys. Hopefully we get another good round of users to add themselves.
- Mark Krynsky
Kind of frustrating to see how much time I spent on this map and then to find out someone had probably saved their changes over mine - hence mine was gone this entire time. Others should also check for this. In any event, thanks, Spidra, for the tip :) My other pet peeve is Google Maps scrolling incessantly out of nowhere. (Hi Jess.)

Anyone interested in collaborating on an "advanced" 23 Things project for librarians? I'm thinking it'd deal with APIs, data migration and mash-ups, content/collection management systems, web development, and the like. Y'know, shit I wish I was more proficient at right now.
excellent. i can't think of a better place than FF to start generating a list of "things" that we could work on. pile 'em on, folks.
- J450N
Various LSW types have talked about this in the past--increasing actual tech proficiency among the already web-savvy--but for some reason I don't recall anyone suggesting that we approach it as a 23 Things-style project. Maybe they did and I just don't remember. Anyway, good idea, and I'd be likely to participate in one way or another.
- Your Neighbor Steve
Well, I think APIs, data migration, and mash-ups are a pretty good start. I know I have lots of ideas for mashups are go beyond simple RSS feeds and geotagging info. Maybe something with Drupal?
- Georgie Bestie
Rudiments of the command line for *nix. Setting up an Apache/MySQL/PHP sandbox on a local computer.
- Your Neighbor Steve
great suggestion, Steve -- or building that sandbox via virtualization could provide the foundation for a number of additional "things" like: create a small digital library using Omeka/DSpace/etc.., build a simple Drupal website
- J450N
Ooh--I would absolutely be up for doing something like this!!
- Hedgehog
What about addressing some of the things Iris mentioned in her recent blog post: What's your DNS and how to deal with it etc...
- Hedgehog
*Excellent* idea! "Learn to code enough to make some simple stuff (forms and the like) for your site" might be good (says she who is trying to do just that). Refurbishing old computers with some flavor of Linux? Any of the final project assignments Dorothea has used for her classes.

Yup. I'm happy to pitch in with setting up wordpress - finding themes, simple theme adaptation, plugins u need and how to find them; how to set up a LibX toolbar ( although that is easy peasy if u just sit down for 1/2 hr and follow instructions. I'd dearly love to participate in something like that. Hm, obviously I could do Zotero, or work with Kathryn on LibX. I'm not so hot on the server-side stuff but would love to learn more about it.
- Jason P
Between what I'm seeing here and what Steve said has been discussed by LSW, I think we have the foundation for something pretty interesting. I'd be glad to coordinate this and get all the right people on board to share their respective areas of expertise. Most importantly, what the hell do we call this thing? "The Next 23 Things?" "23 Weeks?" "28 Days Later?"
- J450N
I'd be interested in learning some of this stuff, though maybe not all. I'm interested in Koha/Drupal integration, other Drupal integration stuff.
- Laura Norvig
Me three! Also, it might be too basic for you guys, but making more dynamic webpages (PHP, Javascript) would be interesting, too. Basic upkeep/commands for sys admins? (Says the person who was handed a server without any training).
- Jaclyn Bedoya
Jaclyn, I can fudge my way around basic javascript, but so far I've only used php for the simplest possible include function so that'd be interesting for me.
- Deborah Fitchett
Looks like this project is unofficially getting greenlighted for funding. @Volpone Steve's suggestion of "Do IT Yourself" as the name must have been the clincher.
- J450N
Yeah, one of the cool things about this is that a person could easily be a "teacher" for a section where she was proficient and a "student" for other sections where she felt her knowledge was lacking.

this is nice. very unique living space. i posted an article a while back here on ff detailing similar mill conversions. now i can't seem to find it 'cause ff screwed up the search feature
- Cee Bee
Looking at the kitchen shot I thought "that doesn't seem very well insulated" but then I realized that corrugated metal wall is probably just elaborate interior paneling and not the actual exterior silo structure. Seems like they built interior walls around the entire side, so the grain silos effectively provide siding and inspiration.

"The revenge of the Forty-seven Ronin (四十七士 Shi-jū Shichi-shi?), also known as the Forty-seven Samurai, the Akō vendetta, or the Genroku Akō incident (元禄赤穂事件 Genroku akō jiken?) took place in Japan at the start of the eighteenth century. The tale has been described by one noted Japanese scholar as the country's "national legend." It recounts the most famous case involving the samurai code of honor, bushidō. The story tells of a group of samurai who were left leaderless (became ronin) after their daimyo (feudal lord) was forced to commit seppuku (ritual suicide) for assaulting a court official named Kira Yoshinaka, whose title was Kōzukeno suke. The ronin avenged their master's honor after patiently waiting and planning for over a year to kill Kira. In turn, the ronin were themselves forced to commit seppuku — as they had known they would be — for committing the crime of murder. With little embellishment, this true story was popularized in Japanese culture as emblematic of the loyalty,...

This is what happens after you go do art as a kid and as a teenager, go to art school for 6 years, then buy a few *more* things, and keep tossing them in a closet and forgetting what you already have. I was sorting them by brand, sort of, with some help from the Dick Blick website. Now stuff's all rubber-banded together, the Prismacolors are all in the bottom of my ArtBin, etc. Told you guys this was #reallyanal.

I swear I sighed audibly with contentment. It's neat and beautiful. I've no idea how I missed this before.

oooh look at how young and cute Paul is! :) very cool that you saved this! What was your job title then (intern for ______)? What location did you work at? Does that # mean you were the 39,325 employee hired by M$?

I worked on Win NT, debugging OLE. It was pretty bad because the NT OLE code was fine; all the bugs were in 16-bit OLE apps. There are few things worse than debugging interactions between two 16-bit apps you don't have the source to!
- Gabe
Wow, 16 bit OLE. Why didn't you force everyone to use 32bit Word and Excel? It would've been very Apple of you.
- Eric
Yup, Redmond. I think I worked in building 4, which may not exist anymore, and lived across the street at "Timberlawn". I worked on the installer for "Plus Pack for Windows 95".
- Paul Buchheit
Eric, it gets worse: one of the first apps I had to look at was Ichitaro, Japan's #1 word processor at the time. It sure would have made things easier if I could have forced everybody to only use 32-bit English apps!
- Gabe
I wonder if it was some kind of foresight to hang on to your old Microsoft badges, but not your diplomas.
- Clare Dibble
Nice, a blue badge. I consult for Microsoft and have an Orange badge.
- Alan Le
Wow! I was there that same summer interning for "Office Team Manager" I must have started a week or 2 before you as my employee number was 39207.
- Joe Beda
I think I returned my badge, so I can't remember what my employee number was. I worked on porting the standard ms installer from windows to the mac.

Sanjeev - a worthy cause for sure! :P

It was a piece of code that Ben Slivka wrote to produce cab files :)

Noah, it's an image bookmarking service. The only way to get in on it is to be invited and each person gets one invite to pass on.

I don't even eat meat and I want that right now.

Joey... I have a vegie alternative. You get large flat mushrooms and lie them stem up on a try. Put about 2 tablespoons of butter on each with chopped up chilli and salt. Bake for about 30 minutes in a medium oven. They take on the taste and texture of fresh, tender beef.

Epic is the only word to describe this. Truly. Epic. I am impressed.

At least you had a Hayes 300 Baud Smartmodem. We had to make do with a half-duplex No-name British 1200/75 baud one, and we didn't have anyone to sort out the wires for us the first very frustrating weekend!
