"Roger Ebert loved movies. Except for those he hated. For a film with a daring director, a talented cast, a captivating plot or, ideally, all three, there could be no better advocate than Roger Ebert, who passionately celebrated and promoted excellence in film while deflating the awful, the derivative, or the merely mediocre with an observant eye, a sharp wit and a depth of knowledge that delighted his millions of readers and viewers. “No good film is too long,” he once wrote, a sentiment he felt strongly enough about to have engraved on pens. “No bad movie is short enough.”" - Bluesun 2600 from Bookmarklet
What I appreciated about him was that he not only wasn't afraid to have a strong opinion, he also had the willingness to admit that his opinions could change over time and that his initial impressions of something might evolve. His view of GroundHog day was one example. He hated it at first but then came to regard it as a great movie. - Kevin (aka ThreadKilla)

"I often times would imagine that the camera, not the cameraman, was my boyfriend. And that I was playing up to him. Especially in some of the smiling shots. I sometimes tried to look sexy but couldn’t pull it off. Marilyn Monroe could pull it off; I couldn’t. I thought I looked ridiculous in those shots where I was trying to be sexy. -Bettie Page

"When Marilyn died, I was in Japan making a movie and I remember being so sad because it seemed to be our loss. But she lives forever on film; she gave so much, she had a deep caring for her work and cared a great deal. Actors care about the parts they play, but Marilyn cared even deeper. She was glorious, something else. She stands alone and is incredibly unique. When I need cheering up, I watch “Diamonds” or the opening number of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and it lifts my spirits. Marilyn was a lovely, kind person who wouldn’t hurt a fly, she was adorable but that isn’t even a good enough word. She was so gifted. -George Chakiris (who was a dancer in the “Diamonds” scene with her in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes)" - Bluesun 2600 from Bookmarklet

Ann Rutherford, actress in 'Gone With the Wind,' dies at 94 - latimes.com
"Ann Rutherford, an actress whose small role as Scarlett’s younger sister Carreen in the 1939 film “Gone With the Wind” was her most enduring, has died. She was 94. Rutherford, who also portrayed Mickey Rooney’s teenage girlfriend in the Andy Hardy movies, died Monday night at her home in Beverly Hills, said her close friend and fellow actress Anne Jeffreys. Rutherford had been in declining health with heart problems. As she became one of the last surviving cast members of “Gone With the Wind,” Rutherford made a second career out of attending festivals featuring the beloved Civil War epic. Under contract with MGM, she was a regular in the hugely successful Andy Hardy series when studio head Louis B. Mayer informed her that his son-in-law, producer David O. Selznick, wanted to borrow her for “Gone With the Wind.” Mayer called it “a nothing part” and planned to say no, Rutherford told The Times in 2010. A fan of the Margaret Mitchell novel, Rutherford implored Mayer to reconsider. When... more... - Bluesun 2600 from Bookmarklet

Ray Bradbury, enduring author of fantasy, science fiction, dies at 91 - latimes.com
"Ray Bradbury, the writer whose expansive flights of fantasy and vividly rendered space-scapes have provided the world with one of the most enduring speculative blueprints for the future, has died. He was 91. Bradbury died Tuesday night in Los Angeles, his agent Michael Congdon confirmed. His family said in a statement that he had suffered from a long illness. Author of more than 27 novels and story collections—most famously "The Martian Chronicles," "Fahrenheit 451," "Dandelion Wine" and "Something Wicked This Way Comes"—and more than 600 short stories, Bradbury has frequently been credited with elevating the often-maligned reputation of science fiction. Some say he singlehandedly helped to move the genre into the realm of literature." - Bluesun 2600 from Bookmarklet
