"Snow before Christmas is Christmassy (however hard the news purveyors work to make it a scare story). But snow and ice in January are bleak. It makes me wonder: what is the bleakest snow scene in all art?"

There exists a very close connection between the activities of the human species and the natural environment in which we witness the occurence of these activities: to the degree that human intelligence is able to profoundly change Nature it has also created the conditions in which our cognitive activity has evolved. At the present moment in which the ecological crisis coincides with the collapse of human social values and of the certainties upon which are based industrial and post-industrial society - having extreme effects upon the individual and collective experience of living - all ecologists are obliged to evolve a precise and profound model of reflection and analysis upon the nature of the processes which accompany change, and which includes the analysis of subjects like ethology, epistemology, and the study of complex systems.

Psychology of Technology: Real-time Web, Unreal-time Life | Psychology Today : As for the human drive for real-time Web, the emergence of real-time media has altered our expectations about the availability of information and our ability to communicate with others. - http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog...
"Quantum computers take advantage of the laws of quantum physics to provide new computational capabilities. While quantum mechanics has been foundational to the theories of physics for about a hundred years the picture of reality it paints remains enigmatic. This is largely because at the scale of our every day experience quantum effects are vanishingly small and can usually not be observed directly. Consequently, quantum computers astonish us with their abilities. Let’s take unstructured search as an example. Assume I hide a ball in a cabinet with a million drawers. How many drawers do you have to open to find the ball? Sometimes you may get lucky and find the ball in the first few drawers but at other times you have to inspect almost all of them. So on average it will take you 500,000 peeks to find the ball. Now a quantum computer can perform such a search looking only into 1000 drawers. This mind boggling feat is known as Grover’s algorithm."

"Can art change the climate? Of course! It could make us aware and ring some bells in case we actually all decide in a coherent effort to do something about the issue of global climate change. More and more each day, contemporary artists from around the globe respond to the issue of global climate change in their own, unique way. An impressive example of such work is displayed at the major international exhibition of environmental and climate change-related art in Copenhagen, Denmark. However, all this could not have been possible if The National Gallery of Denmark, Den Frie Center of Contemporary Art, Nikolaj Copenhagen Contemporary Art Center, and the Alexandra Institute had not joined forces."

"Amid the economy's many ailments, some good news has remained mostly off the radar: The at-home work force is growing, and it is encompassing new occupations ranging from radiology and nursing to auditing and teaching. The bad news: Fierce competition means your odds of landing one of these jobs are poor. And if you succeed, you will probably take a pay cut. For companies, home-based employees, independent contractors and freelancers are helping cut costs and improve customer service. Full-time, home-based freelancers and independent contractors in the U.S. are expected to increase by 200,000 workers to 11 million by the end of 2009, says Ray Boggs, a vice president of IDC, Framingham, Mass., a market-research firm; he sees another 200,000-worker increase in 2010. While that is a mere blip on the radar in an economy that has been losing nearly that many jobs in a month, the trend means a lot to the individuals who are benefiting from it. They are avoiding dreaded commutes, doing...

"But those who win the work-at-home lottery reap diverse benefits. Intent on avoiding a long commute, Heather Hedden, a Raleigh, N.C., marketing specialist, spent a year looking for her current spot, as a home-based concierge for VIPdesk, Alexandria, Va. The position was worth the wait, she says. She enjoys using her research skills to help clients find theater or sports tickets,...
