This is a fantastic idea. I was already considering storing a few static images of things like the London Underground map and other transport maps of areas I might visit. But proper apps would be even better. - Tony Ruscoe via fftogo
OMG, yes. Let's also add maps for the museum you're in (replacing the entire paper brochure). You could even have downloadable audio tours. Of course how long would it take for Netflix to come out with "take a picture of the bar code and we'll add it to your queue" when you're in a video store. Heck, Amazon should do that with everything. Yes, this could really kill local retail. - Cyrus Lendvay
wow what a great idea - I don't even have an iPhone and i think its a great idea! - Marco
That is a sweet idea - klecu
They discussed this already in relation to Starbucks and potentially Apple stores. They discussed the idea expanding beyond to other places. Currently they have an app that pops up in Starbucks inside iTunes to view recently played music. This article expands on it a bit. Old article: http://news.softpedia.com/news... - Adam Helweh
This is a good idea for any GPS equipped phone ? - Brian Sullivan
This a cool idea, but it's been talked about for years. The new things about it are 1) the iPhone and 2) that it could actually be implemented widely now. The tricky thing from a user experience point-of-view will be providing the opportunity to add apps without constantly annoying the user with the sheer volume of them (a la spam). - Chris White
There was a similar system for Palm devices some years ago: "beaming" stations which could send apps to a Palm device via IR. I tried it at the Sony Metreon, which distributed an interactive floorplan. A little Googling shows they also installed the beaming stations at Pac Bell Park and similar public locations with lots of foot traffic. - Denton Gentry
There's no need to make them as intrusive as he describes. Just tag apps with one or more sets of coordinates and allow people to filter app store searches by location. The same applies to web pages in general. There are already ways to geocode web pages. If only some search engine would let you do something useful with that... - seth
@Cyrus We (edgelab) looked at Scanbuy's technology a few years ago - does just what you are talking about. Their best application (rolled out through a shell organization...for reasons that will become apparent shortly), IMO, was this http://www.wired.com/science/d... - Ryan Kaisoglus

"In several lengthy interviews, Mr. Batebi provided an unusual window on Iran under its ruling clerics. His alienation began at age 9, when he witnessed a deadly stoning. He rose to fame in 1999, appearing on the cover of The Economist magazine holding the bloody T-shirt of a fellow student demonstrator — an image he first saw when a judge slapped it before him and declared, “You have signed your own death sentence.” Finally, after a decade of political combat, he reluctantly decided to abandon Iran for an uncertain exile." - Bret Taylor via Bookmarklet

Iran's tank man - I can't believe he survived and is here now. Considering my own father was arrested, imprisoned and then escaped from his home country only to never go back, I have nothing but extreme empathy for the people of Iran and what they have had to experience not just since the revolution, but with the Shah and beforehand. So much misunderstanding in the west, as we dont realize that the large majority of the world dont live with the same freedoms we enjoy and instead we demonize them as groups - Nik Cubrilovic

Nice one. I'm not so sure on my leaning towards the white one now :) - Patrick Jordan
So I don't get it...when I get my 3G tomorrow at an Apple Store are they going to rip off the plastic and install the sim card, etc.? Or do I take it home and install it? I understand you bought from reseller, just wondering if anyone knows what the US Apple Store experience will be like tomorrow. - James Hull
Duncan, whats your verdict on the white vs black? Fingerprints really noticeable? - Zee from WeDoCreative
James - pretty sure both Apple and AT&T will be doing all the activation in store for you. - Patrick Jordan
Zee, the white shows up dirty/ dusty immediately, but fingerprints aren't too bad - Duncan Riley
James, per Patrick's comment. In my case I had an existing sim, so they just handed it over - Duncan Riley
Duncan - what do you think of the slightly rounded back? Does it wobble when set on a desk / table etc? - Patrick Jordan

giz said it was buggy though... Did it crash on you yet? - Chad via twhirl
I'm not anti-Facebook app, I'm just saying that it doesn't replace contacts. - Chris White
Not yet. I would rather see Contacts pull from other resources. FB has the advantage (as do other sites) of having up to date information. - Dion Almaer
The login form was buggy, finally got it to work, and then the app crashed for me. - Bret Taylor
Okay, lets be clear. Facebook is never going to replace the contacts app. - Chris White
Not almost for me, my contacts lists is much more comprehensive than my facebook contacts list. - Rajiv Doshi
Chris White: For my sister-in-law it will. For some folk, FB is their contacts. Just not you and I :) - Dion Almaer
So what we need is a "Plaxo Contacts iPhone app" that layers personal and shared contact information together - but have it come from a company without the spam-baggage that Plaxo carries and the wall-garden-baggage that Facebook carries. - Jonathan Berger
I think it would be nice if everyone did get on facebook. Something like their contacts app could then pretty much solve the 'contacts' problem once and for all - Charlie via twhirl
Yeah, parents should all get on their kids Facebooks. No problem. - Chris White
Jonathan Berger, perhaps it's time to let bygones be bygones? Plenty of companies have done stupid, albeit not intentionally evil things, and gone on to offer awesome stuff. As a former Plaxo contractor, I'm biased, but I think the bloggerati haterade's been way overdone in this situation. - Adam Lasnik
Thanks, Adam! (I head up marketing at Plaxo.) Also worth noting in this space is an initiative quietly gaining serious momentum, Portable Contacts. http://portablecontacts.net/ - John McCrea

It's going to be interesting. Quite apart from virtual worlds, I think there's a long way to go with exploring avatars themselves. If somebody can make 3D avatars that can lipsynch with services such as skype, and are not as annoying as clippy, they might be on to something. - Jonathan Beckett
Do we need more virtual worlds? I've held business meetings in World of Warcraft (three directors and a couple of stakeholders for an oil company). People will choose the easiest tools to use and games are way in front - Craig Thomler
Crazy talk, Craig, but no doubt true. - Migger
Hosting meetings via games is a great idea. It's gotta be more fun than sitting in a conference room. - John Budnik
Business meeting in world of warcraft? or second life? Why not just have a real "face to face" video conference ? - Chris Farrugia
As many people as I've talked to about the virtual world phenomenon, not one can cogently explain to me the appeal. Craig, I second Chris' question-- why have a WoW business meeting as opposed to a videocon, a conference call, or an in-person meeting? - Harish Venkatesan
Can't go there. Would probably never come back ... much less find my way out ?! - Charlie Anzman
@Craig: I guess it's fun 'coz you can start shooting the directors if something goes wrong.... I'd suggest quake :) - Yuvi
I always think of virtual worlds as a place kids hang out. NVM that I play video games at 33, that's ok. But virtual worlds? I dunno. Until they get like SnowCrash I'll just pass I suppose. - Jason Shultz via twhirl
