Leo Laporte
Windows Weekly 102: Now With Unicorn Tears discussion (recorded 9 April, published 10 April 2009)...
I'll start opening rooms for comments as we record the shows at http://live.twit.tv. This is our first - Leo Laporte
Great idea :-) - Ken Sheppardson
Are you going to keep doing this? - Nolan Alston
If people use it, definitely! - Leo Laporte
Might take a few shows to get some traction. - Ken Sheppardson
Can you do a embed with this for under the live video? - Ryan
Well, good idea - but aren't you starting to have a large amount of different places where people discuss? Three chat rooms and FF? - Andreas Næsby Rasmussen
I really wish that I wasn't at work right now so I could participate here... Hopefully I'll be able to get home in time for PCPerspective (that is today right?) - Chris Heath
Paul mentioned a CompUSA store. Tiger Direct bought all rights to the CompUSA brand when they went belly up. I've been receiving CompUSA e-mail ads for a while now and they often have awesome prices. - Ken Davidson
Yep. The advantage is that it's permanent and searchable. But just as real-time as IRC. - Leo Laporte
The Leo Radio stuff just pushed this thread half way down the page. - Nolan Alston
But its back at the top now :D - Ryan
It comes back to the top when there's a comment. - Leo Laporte
I had the pointer over the comments so it did not move. It moved once I moved the cursor. - Nolan Alston
I am thinking of putting this under the video once we move to Bit Gravity. - Leo Laporte
i think it takes more than one bit of activity to bump the item back to the top - Chris Heath
Leo, how do you talk here and talk to Paul at the same time! :) - Chris Gardner
BitGravity + FriendFeed would be a pretty darn slick system. - Ken Sheppardson
Yes, it does.. it still shows third on my list - BASEnet
That would be nice! - Stephen Heron
Leo: putting this in the text stream is a great idea! - Eric Geller
I'm not sure how to embed it - but I think one of the standard widgets will work - Leo Laporte
When is the move to Bit Gravity going to be complete? - Ryan
You can always click on the date stamp on an entry to open that entry by itself on a page. That also gives you a comment box on the bottom of the page that's always open. If you click on the date stamp a second time, you get a little pop-up window with none of the navigation. That's the view I'd try to embed. - Ken Sheppardson
The Feed Widget should work fine. - Chris Gardner
That is, just append "?embed=1" to the permalink - Ken Sheppardson
will now - russellcoleman
How the hell did you figure that out Ken? Haha. - Rolf Schewe
Love it Ken, thanks. - Norm Corriveau
Problem with that is I'd have to change the embed for each show. I'll just embed this room. - Leo Laporte
Read his bio: Ken builds web stuff. ;-0 - Leo Laporte
With BitGravity will you have the ability to view past shows? If so, per show conversation would be pretty handy. I wonder if you could start threads and update the embed programatically... - Ken Sheppardson
Leo: If you embed the room, you'll also get non-show-specific comments like general questions, thank-you's, etc. - Eric Geller
Yay TWITTER :-) - Ken Sheppardson
I love TweetDeck. - Stephen Heron
Jesus my 3g keeps dropping the audio stream :( - Ryan
I'm with Leo, use FF only now. - Norm Corriveau
FF is a bit confusing for me. I like twitters simplicity. - Stephen Heron
Showing it now on the show - Leo Laporte
FF is definitely confusing, but if you spend enough time using it, you'll get a sense of how everything works and where all the features are. - Eric Geller
Horray - Ryan
Wow, this is nifty. : ) - Chad Moran
Hi Paul! - Chris Gardner
Very cool Leo. - Joshua Beard
And it's searchable later. - Ken Sheppardson
How do you keep up Leo? - Willem (@wim66) ☠
The 96% of netbooks using Windows is FUD http://bit.ly/tIR4 - Ghworg
Ken do you work for friendfeed? :P - Stephen Heron
Cant find Paul's FF account... anybody? - Ken Sheppardson
Funky - realtime, non-chat that's searchable - Devin Baines
The only complaint I have about FF is that, for highly-active FF comment threads, you might respond to a comment and your response might be separated from the original comment by six or seven other posts. Which makes it hard to follow along. - Eric Geller
I like this much better than the Stickam chat - k. chan
Just one more thing...... - Stephen Heron
No, I don't work for FriendFeed :-) - Ken Sheppardson
Real time is cool, you should open a drop.io account Leo. - Kiko Cherman
Eric: Is that any worse than IRC or Stickam chat? - Ken Sheppardson
Ken: not at all, but that's meant to be fast moving. - Eric Geller
Eric: This isn't meant to be fast moving? - Ryan
Ryan: FF could be intended for that as well, but Stickam seems to be more so. - Eric Geller
To turn off Facebook IM click on the Chat Icon on the bottom Right and click Go Offline - Chris Bartow
i like this - Ray
Eric: yeah I guess I agree, Stickam chat was originally designed to be realtime fast scrolling chat, this is just quickly becoming something very similar and better - Ryan
you da man Leo - Ray
Wasn't the river going to be moderated? - Norm Corriveau
Norm: by chat mods I think was the original plan. - Eric Geller
Leo: You might want to switch the room over so only you're the only one who can create new entries. Then anybody can comment or like on them. - Ken Sheppardson
Ken: Good idea. That will eliminate miscellaneous, non-show-specific threads. - Eric Geller
What the heck are unicorn tears? - Norm Corriveau
mmmm....unicorn tears - Tony, Paradox of FF
This comment chain is so long that I have to scroll all the way up just to hit the "Comment" button. Maybe FF could do something about that. - Eric Geller
I wish the comment button was at the bottom instead of the top, scrolling all the way back up to hit it is a pain. - Ghworg
Eric: Click on the time up at the top (XXminutes ago) - Ryan
Finding myself using Twitter less and less, just wish my Twitter followers were on FF - BASEnet
It is at the bottom if you link directly to the posting page - Tony, Paradox of FF
Ryan & Tony: Thanks guys! - Eric Geller
Also... keep in mind this is a Beta. And I think they really mean "beta", in that I expect they'll work out some kinds over the next few weeks, e.g. how to handle really long threads better. - Ken Sheppardson
That's cool, when Leo updated the original post, the URL changed with a refresh. Guess that makes sense, but it looked cool. - Eric Geller
I'd like an updating tally of the number of comments at the bottom next to the comment button - Tony, Paradox of FF
When the comments are collapsed they go by too fast to read for me. - Ghworg
Ken: Then we really need to make sure that the TWiT thread is huge - Ryan
I've just added FriendFeed - TWiT Conversations Room to my TWit Live iGoogle gadget... very nice... check it out... http://fwennberg.blogspot.com/2008... - Fredrik Wennberg
I can't wait until they add the ability to skin the page. - archaictree
Fredrik: Nice! - Eric Geller
Links work here too! - Norm Corriveau
You really need to make entry creation private, Leo :-) - Ken Sheppardson
Leo: I love the idea of saving comment threads by having them take place on FF, but how fast do you think this would go if you were able to get your IRC and/or Stickam peeps all over here? - Eric Geller
Eric: Shouldn't be any faster than if you were in those actual rooms - Ryan
Can I see a Group feed only in the Room? - António Teixeira
options are always good - Tony, Paradox of FF
I wonder if we could crash FF by having lots of show threads going with simultaneous commenting. - Eric Geller
Antonio: If you subscribe to the group, you'll always see entries/comments/likes. - Ken Sheppardson
Will you be using this to post links etc leo? - Stephen Heron
Can we put the newest at the top? - Mark
Thks, Ken! - António Teixeira
When Leo encourages, people listen. - Eric Geller
there doesnt have to be only one winner. - Tony, Paradox of FF
there is room for both services - russellcoleman
Leo how goes the effort to separate your consciousness into three bodies -- one for responding to each chat room? - Eric Geller
Leo, you're going to need more hands. - Mark
This is great..better interaction! - Eduardo
Leo: sounds like a very good and reasonable plan. - Eric Geller
Yeah.. I like this too - Paul Meason
I guess there are already too many chat media; but I'd love to see Jabber there. It's such an open infrastructure and it has a lower barrier to participation than IRC. But I really hate the Stickam chat - the colors and the random jumping around. - Friðrik Már Jónsson
Pause on BG is great too. - Norm Corriveau
Will two Leo clones will use Gotomypc to monitor the chatrooms? - Du Senyao Peter
That sounds like a challenge! - Stephen Heron
This means I can run this on XMBC and maybe Boxee? - Friðrik Már Jónsson
MMM, salad! - Norm Corriveau
Most if not all the FriendFeed folks are from Google, with significant experience with Gmail and Gtalk, so I'm sure they're at least aware of having to scale the system :-) - Ken Sheppardson
I certainly don't see the slowdowns here we usually have when Leo mentions a site. They must have decent servers. - Ghworg
Gonna get a bite as well..... - Eduardo
---- Marking end of Windows Weekly + post show live convo - Ken Sheppardson
i see posting is turned off - Jon Harrison
Is there a BitGravity feed right now? - Ryan
I wonder if Leo can delete comments on here. Like if someone posted something that, in the IRC, would have gotten them banned. Could he moderate comments? - Eric Geller
Stephen: Awesome thanks - Ryan
Yes, since he started the entry, he can delete comments. - Ken Sheppardson
Is there a player that can play the bitgravity stream? - Chip Duford
Ken: Good to know. I'll watch my mouth. ;-) - Eric Geller
He also should be able to make "mods" by making them room admins - Ryan
Ken, how about banning people? - Chris Gardner
should be able to block them from the room - Ryan
And maybe even just this post - Ryan
Is there a player that can play the bitgravity stream so I don't have to open up a web page? - Chip Duford
Chip: Someone told me that it works if you plug http://bglive-a.bitgravity.com/twit... into VLC under the Network Stream section, but I've had no luck so far. - Eric Geller
right ... where do I get VLC? - Chip Duford
It's not bad ... the aspect ratios a little off, but ... it's staying up. Thanks for the heads up - Chip Duford
No problem Chip. - Eric Geller
Jeff Atwood
serverfault.com logo winner: http://99designs.com/contest... (yes, the font and layout will be normalized with so logo)
Nice choice Jeff. - Roberto Bonini
Ehh, I think he had a few better ones but that's a nice one too. - Chad Moran
