I really hope this 'bacon' craze gets squashed by the threat of swine flu. Food that slowly kills you is not 'cool', nor has it ever been. Carl's Jr. wants us to basically have sex with their hamburgers, so that we will forget about the fact that they are selling death between two sugared buns. Truly sad. I recommend EVERYONE go and see "Food, Inc" when it hits your city.

Gee, Christopher. Really? Bacon had nothing to do with it? That's fantastic. Anyway, my point is, this recent 'bacon craze' is really just another internet craze that usually dies out after a few weeks, Related or not, it's just my hope that the onset of swine flu could kill the fad, mainly because it's annoying as hell. It's a stretch to relate the two, but who cares? It's worth it if I don't have to hear about how friggin' cool bacon is anymore. I'm sure it won't, but I can always dream.

Months? Maybe. Years. Not really. The 'spike' has happened quite recently, as others have caught on and decided to wax poetic about the pork product in all it's glory. Sure, people will always talk about bacon, but not quite as much as they do right now.

I'll chime in once more, then I swear I'm done. Yes, you are correct in that it would give evidence of a mass ignorance or stupidity, but really, would anyone be surprised? Of course bacon has nothing to do with the virus, but you can see how this recent 'pandemic' can immediately put people in a mass panic. Most people react with little or no information whatsoever. It's the sensasionalist media mentality that rules supreme.

It's just one of those things. :) If price is your most important criteria, then yeah, apple is def. more. Also the price differential, when comparing the same HW builds isn't totally out of whack (usually more but def not 2x or 3x like you mention). When I used to have Dell laptops though, their build quality really was awful (keys falling off, creaky plastic that flexed, pieces not fitting together, it might be better now). I wouldn't call it a strict apples to apples (no pun intended) comparison.

@Mikepk LOL at "Apples to Apples".. And I hear you.. I admit the design is pretty slick on them, but I'm looking for straight up hardware for the most $$, and Apple doesn't seem to offer that on their cheapest model. I specced a 2.0ghz Dual core with 3gb of ram and 160gb hard drive for < $500 that is already better HW specs than the cheapest $999 white plastic model that Apple sells.

Checking the specs... for some reason apple.com wasn't loading. Which Dell model are you comparing? I'll bet that it's a lower grade CPU (less L2 cache, slower FSB etc). I think when you really compare the HW closely, you find that apple is more expensive, but not ridiculously so.

I would also like to point that OS X can do way better with the same hardware. My Macbook Pro has 2 GBs of RAM and 2.2Ghz Intel C2D and I've had few performance related issues while simultaneously keeping PhotoShop, Aperture, iTunes, Safari all fired up for long periods. My work desktop has significantly better specs but it cries for more all the same.

Yeah, it's what I thought... the first dell with the 1066MHz FSB (and 1066MHz DDR3 RAM) that I can find is the XPS 13 which is base at $1099. Then again, that model comes with 2x HD space and 2x the ram... but like I said, it's not totally out of whack, just more expensive.

I have a Macbook Pro and I love it. The way that OSX works is just so much better then any other OS. And the nice little touches to the laptop are fantastic as well. Oh and it also is pretty.

Oh I wasn't trying to convince you to get an Apple :) I was just pointing out that comparable hardware (same CPU's FSBs Mem type) the price of Apples is not that out of whack. The apple tax exists, but it's not nearly as large as most purport.

It just depends on what you want. I wanted something that had a good amount of power in a 15" body. And I also wanted OS X because its the best browser around. I thought about making a Hackbook, but decided against it after doing a ton of research.

I should have been more clear with the type of system I was looking for. It doesn't need the ability to render 3D animation, just get me on FF from my couch. :D

They definitely go the route of cramming "premium" specs into even their "low end" mac books. It means you can't get the absolute cheapest, just gets the job done, kind of configuration.

@Mathew I made a Hackintosh once, it worked alright, didn't support a couple different hardware in the system. In the end it was a little too buggy for me, but was a fun experiment. I also really like the flash and pizzaz of OS X, but I would probably miss the customization and tweaking that I can do on an Windows machine.

I have, but was concerned over the lack of Hard Drive space in most of them. Can any netbook owners offer any opinions? Are they viable work machines, or lacking in performance? Most of my work is through web sites and Photoshop.

You can do plenty of customization with OS X. I use Candybar and and something called Secrets to do a lot of interface changes and software changes.

I'd guess photoshop would be tough on a netbook. I also think most netbooks don't have optical drives either (anyone confirm/deny this?).

Thanks MikePK and Mathew for clearing my initial reaction up. I wasn't exactly clear about the system I was looking for, my first reaction was just based on the kind of money I was looking to spend rather than the use/hardware I would need out of it. Apple's quality and design is far superior to PC's, but I've never been one for "Designer models", rather than the most for my buck. :)

I have no issues with iTunes. Runs great, lets me play my music and if I want to buy music through iTunes I can do so pretty quickly.

thing is, Apple uses commodity hardware - it's not "higher quality" stuff, if that was so then show me the DFI mobo's in them! Just standard intel made boards? then you're not getting the best quality on the market! Just look on the net as to how many peoples laptops are breaking due to manufacturing defects (the mba hinge problem for example)

alphaxion, there is still a range of commodity stuff. I was talking the level of the components. Usually Apple uses the higher end of the commodity range even in their "low level" laptop. Since apple designs their own mobo's, I'm not sure what that has to do with it (from an intel ref design I'm sure, but still). The point being, Apple is more expensive, but not as much as most people complain about. If you think you're getting the same HW in a $400 Dell that you get in a Macbook you're very mistaken.

I'm poor and I have a Macbook Pro and I don't regret getting it. Like I said before, I love Apple because of OS X. The extra prettiness of the laptop and the bells and whistles are just icing on the cake for me.

@mike I was talking about the components too. They may design them, but they don't fab them. That fab takes place in the same factories as most of the consumer gear is. And as I said, just take a trawl of the net and see how many people have broken kit that wasn't them being careless (I gave the example of the mba hinge). But, lets me honest here, every computer is going to have problems. But, overall the percentage of defective computers period is very very low. I'm willing to accept that the components in all computers aren't going to all be perfect. But, I will say, that thus far every computer I've owned as been good hardware wise, its the OS that sucked (talking to you windows).

Oh I know what you mean about the OS - the last OS I really loved was RISC OS.. since then every single one has niggles that I just don't like (yes, ALL of them). Tho I don't think there has ever been a "fair" argument in this perpetual "Mac's better than all other PC's" battle because both are quite different in their market dynamics. But I have been hearing more and more that Apples just aren't of the same quality as they used to be.

(and I get sucked in again :) ) I wasn't saying the *physical quality* of the components (ie failure rate, etc...). I was saying that in the spectrum of the *performance* of commodity components even their low end machines tend to have higher end components (spec wise). So comparing a $499 dell with a slower CPU, slower FSB, previous generation RAM, lower end graphics chip with the "low end" macbook is not a fair comparison price wise. That was my only point. :)

And my experience with Dell laptops (for example) the build quality was way worse than my MBP. The creaky plastic, flex and bad fit were obvious in the machine I had. I also had keyboard keys "flip over", connected by a little ribbon but flipped upside down on the KB, if I typed just the right way. This was years ago so it could be their quality has gone up, dunno.

@mike a lot of dell stuff has gone really bad quality since about 2003/2004. I retired some servers from that generation in december 2008, not because of performance but because they were 4 years old and we had a habit of replacing anything that old regardless of the reliability/performance. We had some Dell laptops from 2004 that were still going strong too.

That reaction to her tweet was very impressive!! (Seriously) I had to reach the police a couple of days ago--they NEVER arrived. The FF squad here would have proven much more effective than numerous calls to the authorities. This has turned out well and we can laugh at an 'over-reaction.' But I offer kudos to you all.

The hashtag does sound like an interesting idea. Perhaps an iPhone or Android app can be created to tweet one's location with the hashtag at the press of a button (plus a *very* quick verification to make sure the buttton isn't accidentally pressed).

I think you're comparing apples to oranges here. Twitter vs Facebook vs FriendFeed...one's a micro-blogging service, another a social network in the traditional sense, and the last a service and news aggregator of sorts. I think an important aspect is keeping as clear a distinction between the services as you can get. As in, one music service, one location-based service, one video service, one bookmarking service, one photo-sharing service, etc. That way, when you do something, you won't be updating multiple profiles at once. I know, easier said than done, but it helps.

it depends on some people, that's right. there is no "one surefire way" to lose weight (apart from stop eating completely, but i dont recommend that to anyone). people are too different and need to find their own tips and tricks. my mother only recently just turned 50 and she's only just now having to start excercising, her metabolism has been great over the years (looks like i got my dads genes hahah)

I've loved it, but the 4th season had some deep issues for me. Splitting up the castaways was weird. Although of course I get why they did it, it seems very poorly motivated. Also not straight up killing Ben at this point seems dumb. HE SHOT LOCKE IN THE DAMN CHEST. Stuff like that.

I'm excited. I have a total emotional attachment to so many characters that I'll prob watch it as long as it airs. That said...I think it's kinda irritating that they are making the explainations for everything whacky that's happened a time-travel, physics thing that only Stephen fuckin Hawking can understand.
