Re: The Future of Magazines - http://www.charlesfrith.com/2009...
"Lovely Rob. Great comment and one I'm pleased to receive. I agree with your first comment. Magazines like many newspapers will likely view this as a revenue fixer. Thus turning away from their core job of providing the content in the first place. Quality writing, great photography, informed opinion and painstakingly put together. Magazines are the new wave under pressure but I think their business model is more robust. Unlike immediacy which newspapers are being decimated by. I don't need to buy a magazine on the day it's published. It's about quality not distribution and speed of delivery. Yes they're under pressure but like you point out it's not about tech really is it. But could this be the think end of the wedge between magazines and then newspapers. Is it the future of e readers? I'd probably like to use one to determine that though I'm really enjoying my 'forced' reading on the ferry ride these days. I could fire up the netbook but I've started to enjoy a discerning analogue..." - Charles Frith

"No, the opportunity is not to create the next great website for modeling bottom-up community activity, but to go and actually do the stuff. It is to participate the public school, work towards alternative energy possibilities, design and install bicycle lanes, argue at work for equal pay for women, assist local agriculture projects, develop complementary currencies and non-profit credit unions." - Charles Frith from Bookmarklet

Capitalism the 'real culprit behind climate change' - Mail & Guardian Online: The smart news source - http://www.mg.co.za/article...
“It has too much of a petit bourgeoisie quality … They’re missing the big problem, which is capitalism. Capitalism is what configures the state and forms of thought. Marx and Engels put it very directly; they said in every epoch the ideas of the ruling class are the ruling ideas. Well, what’s the ruling class? Is it the meat-eaters? No. The ruling class is capitalist. - Charles Frith

Labour remains convinced that a “digital Britain” can best be served by government regulation and observation of cyberspace, despite the fact that nearly all the examples of best practice that went into the strategy were online citizen initiatives that had been created in somebody’s living room—with no government interference. - http://www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/2009...

Secret evidence on drugs policy: Inconvenient truths | The Economist - http://www.economist.com/world...
"After thinking about it for nearly two years and trying out various exemptions, the Home Office has refused to release a confidential assessment of its anti-drugs strategy requested by Transform, a pressure group. The reason is that next March the National Audit Office (NAO), a public-spending watchdog, is due to publish a report of its own on local efforts to combat drugs. The Home Office says that to have two reports about drugs out at the same time might confuse the public, and for this reason it is going to keep its report under wraps." - Charles Frith from Bookmarklet
