The brief was to create a typeface based on an environment of your choice. I chose the newspaper as I saw it as a direct interpretation of the socioeconomic environment that surrounds us all. I manipulated the rules of design of the environment by using the 5 column grid as a framework for building a modular font family. This font is then displayed in a series of books and posters where the design is influenced by the newspaper.

Subtitled ʻA concise yet rich discussion of all the small things that enhance the legibility of textsʼ, Jost Hochuliʼs guide to micro-typography considers everything that can happen within a column of text. The book was published first in German in the 1980s. This is the first English edition, completely revised and adapted for todayʼs conditions. Hochuli discusses all the factors that affect legibility: letters, letterspacing, words, wordspacing, lines, linespacing, columns, development of script and type, composition of text and punctuation Detail in typography, designed by its author, is printed and bound in Switzerland to the best standards. It provides, in its own form and manufacture, a demonstration of how books can be made. Colour is fun and doesn’t have to be complicated. There are a ton of more complex articles on the web about colour theory but personally I find these articles boring and uninspiring. You don’t have to be an expert on colour to use it well.

Securing a healthy, resilient, productive and diverse natural environment is a key Defra priority. This is enshrined in the Government’s Natural Environment Public Service Agreement (PSA) to “Secure a healthy natural environment for today and the future”. The Government wants to see biodiversity valued, safeguarded and enhanced. Biodiversity benefits are highly dependent on local action because biodiversity is ultimately lost or conserved at the local level. Therefore Local Authorities (LAs) have a key role to play in conserving biodiversity.

The Printable CEO™ (PCEO) was born from a desire to focus my time more productively. For me, that means things that make my freelance practice sustainable and fun. The Printable CEO name comes from the idea that a good CEO should focus primarily on those things that move the company forward; since I can't afford to hire my own CEO, being able to print one out seemed like the next best thing!

A little bit modern and a little bit nostalgic. A slurp of ice-cream, a smidgeon of grunge and a whole lot of typographic elegance. Owltastic indeed.
