sergiooooooo, yes, if its a roll in your sidebar. They're not extinct, but they are rare these days. Sprague, good to see you're still keeping the spirit alive - Duncan Riley
I used to use one, but it seemed as soon as I'd update it, people would go inactive, or I'd have to change it again. (Examples: GeekWhat and Kent Newsome, both who just about fell off the map) Now, I think the Google Reader shared items blog gives a good enough clue as to what I read and find important. - Louis Gray
I found that no one ever clicked on them so I removed it. It was just noise. - Kevin
I'm on the same boat as Kevin. No one ever clicked on them so, I just got rid of it. I have a section for "friends" that include a couple of blogs but that's it. - Candace Holly
I have one on my dembot blog and really believe in it. - Andrew Baron
My blogroll would probably span a few screens.. Anyway blogroll feels slightly 1990s.. Don't you think so? - Winston Teo
Which reminds me, I need to update my blogroll. - J. Phil
Still maintain one but update it about once a month as things change - Charlie Anzman
I still use them, but only for close contacts. I like them. - Jim Kukral
I once used them, when Zeldman was that name in the bottom of every blogroll (go figure why ;-) ) and then I stopped blogging - directeur via NoiseRiver
In my opinion, the best use for a blogroll is for a _short_ list of _related_ blogs that the reader can hit in order to get more information on the topic. The "600 blogs I read every day" doesn't seem to me to be the best use of a blogroll. - possible248
I'm trying to convince myself to compile a decent blogroll since 2002:) - Federico Giacanelli
Perhaps it's time to convert the blogroll to a micro-blogroll. Better yet, I would like to display the people I find interesting (at friendfeed) as a widget. - Czar Derek Peterman
I recently dropped the blogroll on my blog. No one ever bothered clicking the links. What people do click are the links in my blog posts (yes, it does still happen). The blogs to which I link regularly in my blog posts are a much better barometer of the ones I follow than my blogroll ever was. I really didn't keep the blogroll up to date. - Hutch Carpenter
Hmm, regardless of clicks, SEO's understand that a blogroll link is a vote in Google, or at least indexing priority. If you really like someone, you'll tell Google about their blog by blogrolling them. I never nofollow those. - Brian Carter
Czar: How do you describe your "intersting" people at friendfeed? - directeur via NoiseRiver
I have it on good authority that a new blogroll widget is in the works that will bring blogrolls back - well at least with this crowd. I probably shouldn't say who and I don't know when, but it sounds like it will be dynamic and awesome. So don't count them out just yet - David Knight
My blogroll was too long for my sidebar, so I used to have a separate links page. I should clean it up and bring it back. Need to add a TON of social media bloggers I've been introduced to via FriendFeed these past few weeks. :D - Nathaniel Payne
are blogrolls that hump of cheese n the back of your fridge? :) - (jeff)isageek via fftogo
How about this for a theory: The blogroll has been superceded by Twitter and FriendFeed as the easiest way to track and associate oneself with others that are active, interesting and influential in social media - Daniel Young
It's crazy to me how many have dumped them when it's the first step in being social online if you have a blog... good for blogger to blogger luv and also good for pointing your visitors to additional related resources of value, so good all around. - Scott Bannon via twhirl
Duncan, this is so true. I was literally thinking late last night about doing a post on this as I was tidying up my own (relatively new) blog a bit and looking at the standard blogroll links that came with my Wordpress template. I had a quick look at a few fairly well-known blogs and there wasn't a blogroll in sight.. - Matt Hooper
Regarding the value of blogrolls for Google SEO. Check out this thread, about 3/4 the way down, for a comment on that by Adam Lasnik (Google search evangelist): "be careful about making assumptions on how Google does or will weight 'constant' links ;-" (http://friendfeed.com/e/7c7d98...) - Hutch Carpenter
I read blogs mostly in Google Reader. When I'm on a blog, I'm focused on the content rather than the sidebar. I like the blog roll concept, but it would reach a broader audience if it moved to the main column of content. For example, instead of showing a Last.fm widget in my sidebar, I automated a weekly post that shows my top artists from the prior week as a regular blog post. http://bit.ly/4rQvZU - Joe Lazarus
Poor suckers! Where I work, not only do we get to get to pay too much for our food (as compared to nearby organizations), most of us also have the privilege of paying our employer for a non-guaranteed parking space! Envy me! - MiniMage
i never took advantage of my friend's invitations when he was there. :| - edythe
that's because you are a good person edythe, and i am shameless. WILL DATE FOR FREE FOOD! - Mona N
When I went out to Google for a visit, I was sure to try their food. had momo's and it was so much better than our cafeteria at work and it was free. - Andrea Baker
Ok that's kinda pissing me off. :-) That's just not fair. LOL - Brian Carter
thinking of the Andale on campus...good stuff - Rick Bucich via twhirl
Brian: You should see the breakroom INSANE - Mona N
I wish more companies had the same work philosophies Google has. Allowing them to have free food is genius. Google gets to keep more of their workers in close proximity and I'm pretty sure most stay later at the office for dinner too. free good food = happy productive employees. - Michael Narciso
IMO, it's management 101. employees(perks + positive work environment) + deadline driven employees = happier employees / phenomenal work results - Mona N
^btw the 'happier employees / phenomenal work results is supposed to be a fraction =| - Mona N
My company gives away free red vines... does that count? *sigh* - Michael Narciso
WHAAATTT Red Vines FTW! I don't know about you, but I think I can eat a whole bucket of Red Vines. But I can't find anyone who's willing to do it with me. - Mona N
You can also do that "?" in Google Reader (if you use it) - AJ Batac
Thank you Paul! (I undo more than I do ....) - Charlie Anzman
thinking, whether its technically possible to more undo than doing! :) - Jigar Mehta
Still waiting on the "unsend" feature.... - Alex Cook
Charlie captured my editing style pretty well also. It is possible, at least by my count. Type something, undo it, type it again, undo it, retype it and then actually send/post/submit/publish it. You've really only *done* it once, and undone something else twice. See? :) - Todd McKinney
cool! Does that mean I can UNSEND a message now? I keep waiting for them to add that... - Tim Hoeck
I wish. Unsend would probably be my top feature request at this point. It's a little tricky, but definitely doable (requires a small delivery delay obviously, but an extra 15 seconds is not big deal for email). - Paul Buchheit
totally agree on unsend. holy shit that feature would have saved me from alienating most of my friends (i think... sniff.... yeah, its not the BO) - tommy payne
"A new study casts doubt on a long-standing belief about the power behind gamma-ray bursts, the most energetic explosions in the universe.
Researchers have found that short gamma-ray bursts—those that last a couple of seconds or less—have brighter afterglows than the simple, reigning model of afterglow emission predicts." - Robert Seidman via Bookmarklet
Man, gamma ray bursts scare me: a couple seconds from like 1,000 light years away can boil away the Earth's atmosphere and we'd have no warning of it. This piece only serves to harm my sleeping ability more. - Mark Trapp
I thought this was going to be a crap article about stuff we already know. I'm glad I actually clicked on it...and read it :) - Rahsheen Porter
I follow all 10. Got any other suggestions? - Robert Scoble
Why isn't Scoble on the list? Or did I miss it? - Kyle Lacy
Kyle, it's based on Mike's top 10 most interesting subscriptions as defined by Friendfeed. If you go to Friend Settings in the top right, then click on Stats, you can see your top 10. Scoble just doesn't happen to be in Mike's top 10. - Mark Trapp
Would have probably helped if I actually read the entire post. I went straight to the image. - Kyle Lacy
Nice nice. But this just motivates me to use FF more for so many other reasons! - Tamar Weinberg
+1 for Franklin Pettit, he's very active here and tries a ton of alphas/betas. Not to mention he had twins a good 2 years before louis gray... he's quite the trend setter :-p - David Knight
Did he say skilled? :) As my inbox fills overnight ... appreciate the mention Mark. Of the people commenting (that I know) above, add Tamar if you're interesting in the Social Marketing or SEO space. - Charlie Anzman
Well done, pleasantly surprised. :) - sergiooooooo
Thanks Mike I am glad to be one of your favorites. You are one of my favorites as well. - Franklin Pettit
I love Franklin's bio -- "His blog was recently “Louis Grayed.” " - Shey
Cool list... those folks are definitely "keepers"... fun to follow and interact with, including you too Mark!! :o) - Susan Beebe
A great post on Friendfeeds FOAF feature :) - Oliver Ding
Neat article lots of common interests there! - Geoff Schultz
The FF stats are a great mini snapshot of 10 people we find the most interesting. We all can agree on one thing, the stats are lacking
and could use a significant overhaul. - Mike Fruchter
Wow, thanks for the link love....thaaaaaat explains all the new followers. I was wondering what the heck happened today! - Sarah Perez
Now absolutely confirmed. I've been Mike Fruchter'd (with all due respect to 'the fearless leader' of course). - Charlie Anzman
One woman out of ten people? Shameful. Women are at least half the population on this planet. Your prejudices are showing. - Out Wrong
lol. husband Just came in, grabbed a flashlight and headed into the backyard. I'm married to the crazy neighbor! Shhhhhh. There's a raccoon out there! - Shellee
“Hmm. Out of the top 10 people Stats tells me I find interesting, only 1 appears in my "Finds you interesting" list. There are some good folks in that first group, but I may not be paying enough attention to those who pay attention to me.”
Often those you find most interesting are most active and follow many people. When FriendFeed was smaller, I had a lot of overlap between the two lists. Now, only Steven Hodson is in both lists. - Louis Gray
My crossover is Jonathon Coleman from the Nature Conservancy. I really wouldn't have thought to look at this, but it came up elsewhere. Your point about activity level is well taken. - Chris Baskind
Well, gasp and SWOON! You're on both of my lists, Louis! - Cyndy
it almost looks like the wafers are eating her! scary. - Nick
I haven't had vanilla wafers in years... but that's about to change. - Roger Benningfield
Hilarious, I found this pic once when practicing writing funny captions :-) Oh duh, that's my flickr. Now THAT part is funny, thanks Russell! - Brian Carter
my mother used to make banana pudding (which i detest) on a bed of nilla wafers (which i used to love). - Kaia
My favorite home made pie is Banana Cream. I love nil wafers but not in my BCP. - Russellreno
BC - I thought this was you daughter. Still funny. - Russellreno
I hate to break it to you edythe, but I hate banana pudding, too. Bananas should not be cooked. - Cecily Walker
but it's FAR from cooked! fresh bananas are chopped and folded into pudding.. w/ vanilla wafers =\ - Mona N
correct banana pudding has warm pudding made with evaporated milk, layered with fresh nanners and 'nilla wafers. Often topped with whipped cream and chilled in a fridge until stiff. It's perfection. - Jason Toney
From now until the day I die I will wake up each morning and pray to Whomever might be listening with thanks that the above image was somehow not animated. - Akiva Moskovitz
See, I barely like bananas plain, but evaporated milk? Whipped cream? For me, it's a gastrointestinal disaster waiting to happen. - Cecily Walker
Bananas are perfect as they are and I refuse to eat them in some pudding concoction. - Kaia
RR I look old enough to have a daughter? Yikes! :-) - Brian Carter
Wow - This is my best topic ever. It is the third Best of Day behind Mark (Grilled Cheese) and Edythe (Search for Companionship). I got an invite from Mona to the Food room, and I am applying for a subscription to the Crankylibrarian. Pure gold. - Russellreno
Trish, then your son gets: "An Extreme Case of Opthalmic Nilla Wafer Tumors"
Or "Stop torturing your children with nilla wafers! (An all-to-common practice)" - Brian Carter
Did anyone stand up and walk out in protest? - Chad Myers
Did not a single soul anywhere in PR have an inkling of how irresistible this would be to headline writers around the world? - Tom Harrison
On the other hand, maybe these people are experts at eating, they really know how to get the good food. Maybe they are the best people to help others get the good food too. :D - Andrew Baron
You all sound like hypocrites to me. I guess you all starve yourself every day in protest of world hunger and the global food crisis. Would it have made any difference if they had Big Mac's and fries? This whole thread is a joke. At least they were discussing how to solve the global food crisis. All you all are doing is having this pathetic discussion. - Michael Tefft
I didn't have an 18 course meal to discuss world hunger. - Chris Cavs
Michael, not only is the irony irresistible- it might be argued that this demonstrates a lack of compassion... not they'd think better while fasting about it, because the brain needs sugar, but politicians in particular should know better about PR backlash and how it works. - Brian Carter
@Michael: Somehow I don't think they were actually discussing the global food crisis. And, for the record, I'm willing to be that most of us in this thread donate food and money to food banks and charities that get food to Africa, SE Asia, etc. Nice try at a tu quoque, but it didn't work. - Chad Myers
sam sethi? can't believe you are here man! long time no talk... what's uop - Loic Le Meur
Wow, Paris Hilton is missing from the A-list. How is it possible? - Alex Popescu via twhirl
Interesting to see if network effects will now be set in motion: these most followed folks will now get more followed as a result of being listed as most followed, etc. Suggests a paretian (power law) distribution with a fat head and a long tail. Note also that if everybody starts following only a few people then we all risk eventually lowering our rate of discovery. - lang davison
Alex - I've heard it said - people try to put their eggs in one single basket. Of course, the most successful marketing strategies are those that are cross(multi)-channel, but not all of us have the $$$ for a 'full blown' media blitz. - Sonciary Honnoll
"thanks for giving me some more interesting people to fill out my subscribed list and expand my horizons... i especially enjoyed the short bios you included on each person as part of the post
i've already seen items pass by on FriendFeed from most of these people, so rather than just get exposed to them as FOAF's, i subscribed to you and all 10 of your suggestions!" - Philip J Beyer
interesting. i'm a big mmo fan, even though this is just a virtual chat room i will check it out - Chris Harris
Looks like the artwork from Gorillaz. I'm Mac only, but even if I wasn't ... meh. - AJ Kohn
Got a server login error message. Odd because my login works for other Google apps. - Chris Herbert
Inneresting. Wonder if they'll develop privacy protocols around this as well, so you can have secure and private group chats in a rich environment. Hmm.. - felix
:O Pretty interesting, I wonder if you're able to import your own items. - sergiooooooo
@Chris: It seems you are not alone. I am getting the login error too. - Vinay
Yeah. Now once they combine this with Google Earth, it'll become really interesting. - Steve Lynch via Alert Thingy
@Chris @Vinay I had login errors too via the client, succeeded by logging-in first via "Sign in" at the top right of the lively.com home page - David Peacock
Windows only? I can't even make myself a sad panda avatar. - Goran Zec
They need to take a page from HyperCard or Squeak/Smalltalk and implement live in-world programming. I'd buy into that. (That, and please support other platforms) - landonf@bikemonkey.org
I can see why LinkedIn hasn't been heard of. Not many people are into putting resumes and stuff online anyway and it seems very enterprise-ish - Corvida via twhirl
Surely that should be "What WAS Facebook"? - Chris Nixon
I actually think that FF is what I wanted Facebook to be. - Chris Nixon
"What the (bleep) is the internet" - Jay from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back - George Smith
I'm a student. Facebook is the only thing alot of them know. Twitter, Flickr, Linkedin -- like speaking Klingon. - Phillip Jeffrey
What closet, rock or hole have they been living in? Doesn't know what Facebook is? OMG you've got to be kidding me! - Susan Beebe
Facebook's a little green patch. Or a place where someone can buy you as a pet. - Christine Cavalier
Did you tell them it's where they let the asylum inmates play? - Todd Jordan
BTW, most college kids are pretty unaware of social networking. My husband is an undergraduate advisor. They concentrate on texting, mostly. The middle-to-upper class white kids know FaceBook, but that's about it. I wouldn't call 21-25 year olds digital natives. The ''true" digital natives are about 3 years old or younger right now. Corvida, I would guess that many more of your peers will come to ask you this in the coming months. - Christine Cavalier
wow, that beats some of my friends - they know what it is, but don't see the point! - Sarah Perez
LinkedIn is for when you have a career (and are establishing a professional network). Incoming freshman may not know facebook, but most do by the time October runs around. In terms of "digital native", the way I think of it is that the digital natives are those who don't understand the concept of a tv show being on at a specific day and time. My 9-y-o daughter has always known Tivo, whereas I used a 300 baud modem in my first job out of school - Barry Graubart via twhirl
This will sound weird but I tried some bacon flavored chocolate a couple of weeks ago and it actually tasted very good. Gave it sort of a smoky taste. - Mike Doeff
Over the past few years I see a lot of unexpected foods and spices incorporated into chocolates so I wouldn't be surprised. Where did you get the bacon chocolate? I'd be interested in trying it! - Mona N
Mona, I'm forgetting who made the chocolate but we bought it at Whole Foods - Mike Doeff
