"In my experience I have to disagree with you overall. I've only ever found it useful for your point 1 in that it has put me in touch with interesting people, material and events. As a happiness-making pursuit in and of itself however it has never really worked for me. There's just too much ego, self-publicity and self-importance. (I'll admit that I've been guilty of all three at times). I'll keep giving it a try though."

"Reading something that changes your view of the world is one of life's real treats. It can be really scary as well to have your fundamental beliefs challenged. On the other hand it can be very soothing to have your fundamental beliefs solidly reaffirmed from time to time. I just read the Railway Children and it made me so happy I cried."

"His definition of the cloud differed slightly from what is generally understood as the cloud "we can do computing out indeed internet, we can do it in the data centre in a corporation, we can do it on a PC, we can do it on a phone. And we need to have the software that lets people blend those things seamlessly" The cloud is the internet it's not a software solution for syncing all your devices."

""I’ve said this in the past, but I will repeat myself, so bare with me. " Just because you're repeating yourself doesn't mean I'm going to get naked with you!"

"It is really weird that no one is talking about this. This exchange rate drop has really affected a lot of businesses. Australians looking to close deals in US dollars have basically seen the asking price jump by over 30%. As well as the commodities issues I suspect that there are some real worries about the Australian housing market. This whole crisis began with inflated housing prices in the US. Property in Australia is very expensive. Very glad I don't have a mortgage right now."

"Duncan I have files on Omnidrive and until quite recently I've been able to access them. This is the first time I've never been able to access them at all. Kim's called it right in my opinion. It's unforgivable that they haven't contacted the users. It's a simple common courtesy. It only takes a minute to pen an email and let people know what's going on."

Sep 4 - The Japanese electronics company is getting some help from Britain's biggest book chain for the UK launch of its electronic book. After many false starts, ebooks finally appear to be gaining traction with consumers in the U.S. Now Sony is...

"I sort of read it differently. I thought his point was that there is no substitute for first hand reporting whether by bloggers or journalists. First hand reporting is expensive and time consuming. It involves travelling to meet people and see things and being available at any time of the day to do so. A lot of blogging (and journalism for that matter) is just the recycling of secondhand news. There's no substitute for original research and to do that you need time and money."

one small problem with this idea: Roo meat tastes like sh*t, and smells even worse. We use to feed it to our dog when we had a dog

Obviously no one has ever cooked it right for you :) A correctly cooked Kangaroo steak tastes pretty damn good IMO. Kangaroo steak pie is nice, too.
- Shane Perris
Shane, I don't care how its cooked, I still don't want to eat skippy :-) Emu and crock are marginally better than roo, and that says something in itself
- Duncan Riley
Really? Culinary reviews from the land that invented Vegemite? heh
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
Duncan, emu's not bad but ostrich is better. More flavour. Haven't tried croc yet but it's on my list. I still think Skippy tastes great (and totally awesome in a big chunky stew, too!)
- Shane Perris
Chris, I wouldn't eat Vegemite if you paid me. My son loves it, and I gag every time I smear it on his toast
- Duncan Riley
Shane, crocs not too bad, a little gamey, but so is roo I guess. Needs to be cooked properly.
- Duncan Riley
@Duncan nice to know there's still some sanity near the tropic of capricorn
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
Roo can be great, but is hard to cook right. I've given up cooking it myself after a few mediocre experiences. I had wallaby at http://www.jacquesreymond.com.au/frames-.... It was just about the best thing I've ever eaten.
- Richard Crocker
OH MY GOD!!! You eat kangaroos? ... "He just smiled and gave me a Kangaroo sandwich..." ... nope, just doesn't have the same ring to it.
- Matt Shaulis
Duncan, won't they revoke your citizenship for saying that?
- Cyndy
I love wombat pie but it's hard to find.
- Charlie
Matt, yes. You can buy it in supermarket, it's fairly easy to find, although it's more common as a pet food then something people take home to cook. Cyndy, I don't think so, Vegemite is a myth perpetuated by an American company...it's made by Kraft :-)

What if I told you the current president of this country has lead us into an immoral, illegal war needlessly costing the lives of thousands of Americans and 10s of thousands of Iraqis? --- Sorry, I'll take whatever Obama's got over 8 more years of FUD from the GOP.
- Tad
I don't care who you guys vote for as long as you guys vote. Bush only got the votes of 15% of eligble voters in 2000...

Boskin is kind of a corporate tool, though. "Boskin has been a director of Exxon Mobil since 1996." And, yes, that's a little synonymous with evil to me these days.
- Pete Delucchi
Oh dude - there's goes any legitimacy of that editorial straight down the crapper. FAIL.
- Tad
The first two paragraphs were enough for me. I'm sending another donation to the Obama campaign.

I think you have missed one role for Google with Knol - it not only offers a platform and pays for content, it also offers the distribution channel that over years has proved to work incredibly well for other content providers. What I don't understand is why many people don't see pure business logic behind Knol for Google - it has finally realized it sends way too much traffic elsewhere and decided it should keep it to itself (and make money off it).
