Gary Wolf wrote a Wired cover story about craigslist called "Why Craigslist Is Such A Mess". It's a somewhat strange article because it is highly critical of craigslist's design, management, and lack of innovation. But you cannot read that article and not come away impressed with Craig Newmark, Jim Buckmaster, and the ethos of craigslist.

Hilarious - may all come to pass before 2018.
- Todd McKinney
Love it. But 2018? I'd except to be able to get Friend.com directly through the HUD in my flying car by then... Only silversurfers (like us) would still use "web browsers" in 2018.
- Tony Ruscoe
Twitter feed not available? That may come to pass at 10:30.

And what's up with "low karma comments"? I thought the karma thing left us in the seventies... but yes, everything comes on cycles...

You've got the Google thing backwards :)
- Paul Buchheit
Hey, I just noticed I'm in the screenshot. :D @Paul: ? What's backwards, where?
- Voyagerfan5761
Actually, it missed one important thing - a HUGE ad, taking up the top half of the screen, for a substance that is just as effective as Viagra (which was banned in 2011).

I think Paul's saying that in 2018 ff will own google

It's comforting that hitting monkeys will still be as popular in 2018 as they are now.
- Ginger Makela Riker
One thing they got wrong: by 2012, Paul will have started his own country southwest of Alaska on an artificial island. It'll be called Free Festivusland, and it'll get the top-level domain “ff”. FriendFeed will then be http://ff/ — no dots or coms or nets or orgs.
- Amit Patel
I think the web will be voice and audio driven in 10 years, or at least it will be available. There's even some startup now that can sense nerve pulses to the vocal chords to know what you'll say before you actually say it.
- Mike Reynolds
I think comments won't be replaced by nested commented, just like @ in twitter, many people like this.
- terababy
Mike Reynolds, now I'm scared. Very scared. I'll get myself in trouble before I actually hear what I'm saying (rather than after).

For some reason, the Facebook deal makes this future user interface look more likely.

Trent Reznor, the leader of the band Nine Inch Nails is pretty upset that Apple has rejected the latest version of his iPhone app. And rightfully so, the reason for the rejection once again points to Apple’s inconsistencies when it comes to the App Store approval process.
- Daniel Roux
...wow. just WOW! not a NIN follower myself, but Reznor's response here could make me one on general principle alone. also wow: apple now sits in a position where it can decide the morality of popular music...unbelievable.
- .LAG liked that
LAG, was thinking the same thing. Not that they had any problem before, but their following is going to skyrocket. Its a pisser though that they removed the song. I have to fault them for giving in.
- jcunwired
Reznor is awesome. Love the don't take shit from anyone attitude.
- Mark Krynsky
Reznor is a musical genius (for the un-initiated). The irony here is that he's been a long-time Mac evangelist. I'm hoping he sees now that Apple is no different than MS, except they've created a cooler image and have a lot of mindless followers. Go FLOSS. Be happy.
- Chris Spizzirri
When Trent and company drop Pro Tools / Logic on Apple's Mac for something like Linux running Ardour http://ardour.org/ then we'll see some serious shizzle. I still vividly recall playing with the GarageBand files he put out there years ago.

Hats off to Trent! Why do people continue to support Apple and their draconian ways? I really wish others would stand up to Apple like Trent did.
- Alyx
Apple's policy doesn't make any sense. Right now, on iTunes, I can buy 'questionable content', the album The Downward Spiral. I can even buy the video of Closer.
- Paul Grav
I totally think Trent has a point and the right to be upset. However, it's sounds to me much more like some lowly guy in an office who has made a bad decision, rather than some big apple "policy" thing - i.e. someone applying a policy without a clue.
- John Collis
@John. Do you think that there may have been the possibility of 'lowly guy in a office' escalating the issue and management making decision. That would make more sense from a PR perspective. If I were the 'lowly guy in an office' I certainly would have escalated the decision as I certainly wouldn't want to be responsible for an Apple PR shit-storm.
- Paul Grav
Ah I do love it when people take on companies like Apple for the right reasons.
- tech pops
@Paul. Anything's possible, it just strikes me that this is similar to what happened with other apps in the appstore like one of the twitter apps (can't remember which) was blocked because whoever reviewed it saw some language on twitter that was "offensive". In that case it was quickly resolved. This just sounds very similar. As for whether decisions get escalated, I don't know;...

Was thinking of dusting off the blog and posting some thoughts as a SXSW noob - i think i might show my love for Friendfeed and just post them here instead
I got a couple of new blog ideas, too. SXSW can be inspiring in that way. Catch up with you in a bit.

Holy crap, Chris! This is great stuff! Would you say personal branding is for anyone, or more for people who have something to sell through their online persona (a product, service, or opinion)?

thanks Chris - what a great resource - wil be sending this to all my staff - if only they will DO IT! :)

"This map shows the most racist parts of America. Only 22% of counties voted more Republican this year than 2004. These are the people that bucked the general trend and actually went the other way, i.e., Democrats and moderates switching to the Republican side. Race is the only reason that makes sense for a Democrat to switch sides this election cycle. Keep this in mind when you plan your next vacation: America's “racist belt” stretches through the whitest parts of the South and up the Appalachian Mountains."
- Jason Toney
from Bookmarklet
This is quite a leap of judgment but does align for anyone who generally believes the South has more trouble with race than the rest of the nation.
- Jason Toney
Do I understand this correctly: Republican == Racist?
- Glen Mistletoe
I am not sure what this means for Georgia. Is it improving? I hope so.
- Russellreno
I guess the statement, "Race is the only reason that makes sense for a Democrat to switch sides this election cycle" requires a bit of a leap of faith. Of course, no one would disagree with Obama's policies; race would be the ONLY reason to switch sides. Not population influx, not lack of campaign organization. Only race. Yup. There it is.
- Glen Mistletoe
Glen, I think the argument Jonah Peretti is making is that the trend of Democrats who switched parties this election and the counties where it occurred suggests race was the primary factor.
- Jason Toney
And my counter-argument is that there's no evidence presented for that thesis apart from his opinion.
- Glen Mistletoe
But I should note that I'm not advocating for that argument. But I do think the map is fascinating and does suggest some kind of trend that is geographically and demographically related.
- Jason Toney
and I'd also note that the other intriguing number for me this election cycle was the backwards trend of voting by race for Republicans. 91% of McCain's votes nationwide came from white voters. As the electorate gets exponentially more diverse with each cycle, this can't be anything but a losing number.
- Jason Toney
i assure you that the depiction of florida is incorrect. there is way too much white in play there.
- Carlos Ayala
So people who don't vote for Obama are racists? I can't believe that divisive nonsense is starting already.
- Morton Fox
I call BS on the reasoning that being more conservative == being more racist. I HATE when people abuse using the term "racism". They've only helped to water down its effectiveness. Absolute BS.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
Shey agreed there. It's also a roadblock in the conversation. What I would argue, though, is that in this election -- particularly from a Presidential standpoint -- John McCain was supported to an extreme degree by white voters (almost exclusively) while Barack Obama's support was, essentially "the melting pot" or "salad bowl" or whatever diversity metaphor you'd want to use.
- Jason Toney
@Jason Yeah the racial divide between the two parties is definitely visible. What surprised me is, according to CNN, age was more of a factor with deciding voters than race.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
And, while you can't ever truly know whether race or policy was the deciding factor in these specific counties trending more Republican than the rest of the nation, there's nothing wrong in noticing that these are also some of the least racially diverse counties in the nation.
- Jason Toney
i'm inclined to believe there's something there quite frankly. we're in the midst of an economic meltdown and two wars, but those counties trend even *more* towards the party that caused one crisis (the wars) and was in power during (and possibly exacerbated) the second. flies in the face of a whole lot of history and a good bit of common sense. race may not be the "only" reason, but i'd bet it's a leading cause.
- tiffany
Also, with well over 100 million data points to look at, simple answers can't be found.
- Jason Toney
This is a question that is theoretically answerable. Sure, it'll be impossible to get most people to admit that race was a factor, but it would be interesting to ask any Democrats who voted for McCain why they did so.
- Victor Ganata
Craig, which stereotypes are being perpetuated? Which argument is trying to be won? Who, in this article is to be considered the victim? Who is the "you" you're referring to: the person who wrote the original buzzfeed piece or me for posting it on friendfeed?
- Jason Toney
I don't particularly subscribe to the way in which this is presented, nor assigning a 'racist' label to certain areas of the country based on this data point. It's a correlation at best, not causation. THAT said, race DID influence sizable portion of votes (either way) in this election.
- AJ Kohn
except it's not FUD craig. no one said conservatives were racist. conservative isn't even the same as being a republican. the point of this post is that these 22% of counties not only VOTED MORE REPUBLICAN THAN THEY DID IN 2004, but also VOTED FOR THE PARTY WHO LEAD US INTO AN ECONOMIC CRISIS. that is REALLY, REALLY unusual and raises some questions about *why* folks in these counties voted the way they did. when you consider that these places have very few black people and/or were former jim crow states...
