For the sake of any future researchers trying to search the internets for the definitive date when the fixie phenomenon "jumped the shark," it was when Republic started selling color-customizable bikes through Urban Outfitters.

Yeah, that's jumping the shark for sure.

"General Motors plans to quit a joint venture with Toyota to make cars at New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. in Fremont, a decision that threatens the survival of the West Coast's only automotive plant and puts 4,700 factory jobs at risk."

I was wondering when this shoe was going to drop. But I'm wondering to what extent this "puts 4,700 factory jobs at risk," given that the article itself says that Toyota has no plans to cease their production at the plant and Toyota Corollas and Tacomas are about 80% of what is assembled at NUMMI. Finally...when U.S. automakers are closing plants and laying off workers but Japanese...

I had no idea NUMMI was still alive. I asked some Fremont friends and they hadn't heard of it. I had heard a while back about the 80% corolla/tacoma deal, though.

It's hard to miss if you ever drive 880 between 237 and 84.

For those who ride singlespeed or fixed, the lockring spanner is a nice alternative to chiseling your lockring with a hammer+screwdriver, though the latter will work too. Would be nice to have a chain whip on this, too, so one doesn't have to do the rotofix ad hoc thing, either.

Anyone have a favorite domain registrar they'd like to recommend? I want cheap, of course, but certainly don't mind paying $0.005 more per day in order to not patronize odius registrars that are the Maxim magazine of the registrar world.
"To get their bikes back, cyclists have to pay a fine and convince the authorities they won’t ride them on the street anymore – or at least show an inclination to install brakes on them."

I don't have any problem with requiring that fixies have at least one brake installed. Certain things preclude a car from being street-legal and it's now common to require wearing of seatbelts, so it seems consistent to require real brakes on bikes.

"Too many hours in the saddle may affect the fertility of serious cyclists, a conference heard today. Researchers told the European fertility conference that cycle training of the intensity undertaken by triathletes has a significant impact on the quality of their sperm. But Diana Vaamonde, from the University of Cordoba medical school in Spain, said that she thought the "regular guy" who rides a bike should be fine. "I don't think he will have to worry about it so long as it's just like cycling to work. If you cycle to work ... you have all day to recover," she said."

Would be nice to see a more significant number than 15 in the sample pool.

Neighbor smoking pot in stairwell was annoying. Him smoking on the fire escape, right below my bedroom window, is *really* annoying.
