Javascript power to weight ratio. What's yours? Click here, wait for the result and divide it by your device weight in kilos. E.g the Aigo MID with ff3.0 scores 18 which, with 0.35kg gives a jp/w of 51.4 http://bit.ly/v8v3benchmark - http://code.google.com/apis...
I just tried a few times to run this on my iPhone 3G 16GB. First time, it hung Safari. Second time, fresh after a reboot, it never completed, even though I let it run for about 10 minutes. Both times, it. Got to 57% complete, and the scores were: Richards 2, DeltaBlue 2, Crypto 5. Hope that helps, let me know if you want me to run it again! :-)
- Josh Bancroft
first run on my iPaq 614c with PocketIE : same as Josh - got to 57%, then 71% then device hanged ... Second try with Netfront 3.5 : stopped at 43% .. Third shot with Opera 9.5beta: completed ! score: 8 / .145 = 55 :)))
- jean-paul
it hung on an S60 phone for me in the same place. Good to know that Opera completes the task although for some reason, their browsers always seem to be poor at Javascript.
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
Still haven been able to test Skyfire to see how well ajax works and how the latency is. I guess I could RDP to my server at home and get a similar 1000+ result though ;-) I'll post why I dont like the proxy solutions soon.

N800 for shits and giggles: 3/0,206 = 14,6. funny enough it wondered if i wanted to kill the javascript around step 3 or 4.
- turn.self.off
and now multiply the figure by the online battery life of your device and you have an index of internet mobility. Mmmm. Maybe im on to something here!
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
remind me, that archos is using cortex, yes? got to be somewhat bothersome that the older N800 scored as much as it did. or maybe that say something about the microb javascript, even before any kind of optimization...
- turn.self.off
The archos 605 is the old one. Not Cortex bassed but Opera, while accurate, isnt the best at javascript. I will contact Jenn to see if i can get a result from her.
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
ah yes, i got my numbers crossed. that makes a bit more sense. and i recall having issues with javascript (to the point i left it off most of the time) back on my 770. but then that was also a weaker device then the N800, so...

Fujitsu Loox U/B50n 1.6ghz with chrome v1.0154 = 395 / 0.58 = 681 (looks like latest chrome is slower!)
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
tried tear just now, on the old N800, interestingly enough that got me, 18,8 / 0.206 = 87,38! what a difference that is compared to the microb test i did some time ago...

I did some more javascript tests this morning. Android/ARM has made amazing steps forward in the last year but Chrome/X86 (intel Atom at same clockrate) is still 5-10 times faster at processing javascript. A Cortex core takes 0.5W at 800Mhz. An Atom 800Mhz takes 2W at 800Mhz. Based on that, Moorestown could be a more efficient javascript platform.
...which brings me to the question. Are javascript engines written on X86 and then simply ported to ARM or are there javascript engines out there that are specifically written for ARM. (E.g. Android browser)
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
Chrome OS is both for ARM and X86. But I think the ARM version will be more Interesting. While the x86 version might provide only slightly cheaper netbooks (saving $30 Windows clicense for one), could be even cheaper at $199 if with 8GB flash instead of hard disk. But ARM Chrome OS will be about bringing fast and full browser experience on the cheapest ARM laptops as cheap as $80 or...

Starting another mobile device javascript speed thread. This time i'm just using SunSpider 0.9 http://www2.webkit.org/perf... Feel free to run the test and enter your details and result below. (Device, browser, browser version, CPU speed and result.
I can't get over how fricking thin it is. Fingerprint magnet (of course)
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
Just fits perfectly in the hand in portrait mode. This could make an awesome e-book reader.
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
H.264 playback. Check. Divx, check. MKV recognised (contains an AC3 channel which the IT doesnt play out of the box (costs extra for the plugin), same for WMVHD (same plugin though) WMV (VGA) Check, H.264 720p, check.
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
No dock included unfortunately. Usging full fat ff page right now and its fast.
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
sounds really promising. found any android apps to install, to test the compatibility with the large screen? oh, and i see the usual onscreen keyboard issue...
- turn.self.off
Yep. Forget java app. just use imap or direct push With activesync,. itseasy and works great
- Joao de Oliveira(BassoPT)
Not happy with IMAP. 1) The built in email client is poor. 2) I like to be able to search GB of emails on the server (imap can possibly do this, yes). Native app is critical for me and makes me think of Android or S60.
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
If you need to search that much amount of e-mail then you are right, you need a web based app. I like the internal e-mail, but I only sync the last 30 days of every "folder" so it's allright.
- Joao de Oliveira(BassoPT)
I like the Iphone in many ways. social networking and microblogging is really easy on it and apps look good. But the lack of features like easy file management, simply doc editing and email attachment really freaks me out.
- Joao de Oliveira(BassoPT)
Video quality is about the same as on my HTC Diamond 2. But also, as on my HTC the sound in video is really bad. That is where the iphone and even the new Ipod nano win by far.
- Joao de Oliveira(BassoPT)
this video is the recompressed version via the on-device video editor. The original is better but still not what i'm looking for in a mobile device. Video before editing: http://www.youtube.com/watch...
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
Yes, Steve, you can change the text size easy on WM go to settings / system / screen, then got to text size and reduce it. The allways set it to big by default.
- Joao de Oliveira(BassoPT)
Thanks for the screen size tip. These settings are hidden under the Samsung UI. I had to turn it off to find it. What an amateur I am! I've gone to the smallest font setting and i've now got 5 email headers showing instead of three! Actually in portrait mode it's much better thanks.
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
You have to go around the TouchFlo UI on the HTC devices too. They really made these new devices more productive with this new implementations over basic windows mobile, but sometimes they forgot to leave stuff, as simple as changing system fonts size, available to users.
- Joao de Oliveira(BassoPT)
SO far i'm quite impressed with the TouchWiz UI. It covers 95% of the UI and 100% of one's daily needs. I wonder how they will implement it on WM6.5 though because replacing WM6.5 components as they've done with 6.1 might actually be the wrong thing to do
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
I've been using WM6.5 on my HTC Touch Diamond 2 for a month now. Actually WM6.5 is pretty must just eye candy over 6.1, basic windows mobile features are abou the same. What you might have seen on screen shots and demos is a UI created by microsoft called Titanium, similar in many ways to TouchWiz or TouchFLO from HTC, but with way less features. What all manufactures are doing is...

Oh dear oh dear. App store sounds like the only real advantage. I hope they improve the connection manager though. It's poor.

yep, 12:50 Helsinki - Finland With delivery courier
- jkkmobile
I have no idea why DHL chose to stop mine. They want a customs number form me now. I've sent all information to them but it doesn't look like it gets here before Wednesday. Have fun with unboxing!
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
i have already called them. 6 phone numbers to try and get it sorted!
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
ah, the insanity that is customs. mostly its some overworked shipping clerk that gets the paperwork backwards, rather then the customs office directly that the problem.
- turn.self.off
@jkkmobile "Delivery attempted; recipient not home" Go get it bro. (Viliv S7)
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
yep, just shouted to them on phone... will get it in 1 hour

The 'smartbook' OS has a long way to go yet IMO. Moblin on Intel Moorestown could actually be one of the best options out there.
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
Yep. I have been using Mesh for quite a while now. I use if for storing files mostly, but I do have a directory of applications that have USB key style installs that I use to populate new/rebuilt machines. Recent upgrades have made the file copying much faster than in the past.
- Sean Brady
first i find it great. then Microsoft MyPhone was out, offering all PIM data backup and synchronization. i wonder when Microsoft will merge MyPhone and LiveMesh... so far, i m storing my favourite software cabs into a folder of my memory card :) it s easier then to re install a volonte ;) and as i m using Google Sync, my contacts and my calendar are always synched (tasks should come soon i hope!).
- jean-paul
I'm using both LIveMesh & dropbox. I found that if you only want to have your files available in the cloud, dropbox is the better choice, but less storage & anything has to be in dropbox folder might be your dealbreaker.
- sipp11
I use Live Mesh to sync OneNote documents
- Rodfather
Thanks for the note about Dropbox sipp11. So far Mesh is doing exactly what I wanted, that is, deep integration into windows folders. I've already shared a LiveWriter draft folder out to my co-editor Ben. We'll try working across the net US-Germany on a single folder for blog posts.

4hr 45min 55% battery left. Phone still running, Tweetdeck still updating.
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
5hr 18min 45% left. For info, the apps running (only Tweetdeck) have uploaded about 2MB, downloaded about 8MB
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
5hr 45mins and the battery level just dropped all the way down to 20%.
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
Woah! 5:49 and the battery level is at 5%. What a wonderful battery level indicator this is.
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
and two minutes later it's shut down. Turning on again to remove the 3% shutdown level to see if it really has more than 3% left!.
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
Nope. It really was dead. So thats a total of 5hrs 50mins on the 27wh battery. Average of 4.8W drain. Screen mostly off. Internet connected via GSM network. (low speed, low power) I really should run the test again with no internet connected but first I need to re-charge
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
right now i expect it to be a Windows 7 netvertible with lotsa features like multitouch and motion sensors. Oh yes, i can wait for this one cause it'll be the one :)
- Sascha Pallenberg
If Moblin is for existing netbook and Moorestown platforms, Pinetrail won't break compatibility surely. Pinetrail likely to be a variant of Moorestown?
No one knows the GPU core on Moorestown or PineTrail yet.
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
if done right, pinetail will be a superset of moorestown. And in any case, the moblin interface is clutter based, right? So its using opengl to accelerate 2D. And even older intel onboard gpu (if one can call them that) should be able to handle it, in theory.
