"I’m asking all participants to list their “greatest” nominees in the comments section below. You can list your top ten, twenty or fifty - but please, no more than that. List them in order of greatness, #1 being the most important. I’ll cull the final one hundred out of what titles we receive by January 9th. Mad Dog Palin--The scariest thing about John McCain's running mate isn't how unqualified she is - it's what her candidacy says about America : Rolling Stone
WOW...This is not just another article digging at palin - it is THE article digging at palin and her 'cultural' significance. - Anna Haro from Bookmarklet
"The great insight of the Palin VP choice is that huge chunks of American voters no longer even demand that their candidates actually have policy positions; they simply consume them as media entertainment, rooting for or against them according to the reflexive prejudices of their demographic, as they would for reality-show contestants or sitcom characters. Hicks root for hicks, moms for moms, born-agains for born-agains." - Anna Haro
The truly disgusting thing about Sarah Palin isn't that she's totally unqualified, or a religious zealot, or married to a secessionist, or unable to educate her own daughter about sex, or a fake conservative who raised taxes and horked up earmark millions every chance she got. No, the most disgusting thing about her is what she says about us: that you can ram us in the ass for eight... more... - Anna Haro
"Democracy doesn't require a whole lot of work of its citizens, but it requires some: It requires taking a good look outside once in a while, and considering the bad news and what it might mean, and making the occasional tough choice, and soberly taking stock of what your real interests are." - Anna Haro
See, I believe that as a citizen you have the responsibility to pay attention to the people who will represent you and the laws they enact in your name. But with poor reporting and politicians doing so much behind closed doors, there's a dumbing down of American culture that's acceptable. How many people have you talked to who seem to have an opinion they want to spout on politics and in the same breath state proudly, "Politics bores me." or even worse, "All politicians are the same."? - Admiral Anika
"And none of it matters, so long as you remember a few months before Election Day to offer them a two-bit caricature culled from some cutting-room-floor episode of Roseanne as part of your presidential ticket. And if she's a good enough likeness of a loudmouthed Middle American archetype, as Sarah Palin is, John Q. Public will drop his giant-size bag of Doritos in gratitude, wipe the Sizzlin' Picante dust from his lips and rush to the booth to vote for her." - Trish R
And unfortunately, most of it is true (or at least I agree with it). - Trish R
Wow, that's a hell of a picture. After reading the first two paragraphs, all I could think was how badly Matt Taibbi wants to be Hunter S. Thompson. - Carla Thompson
Personally, I like Rolling Stone articles. But a word of caution.. they are always unapologetically extremely left-leaning. - Phil G
hahaha...Carla, I thought the same thing. - Anna Haro
The ironic thing is that the media is the primary cause of all this. Reducing politicians statements to sound bites where a few words from a larger speach can be spun one way or another. Politicians don't have to have grand ideas or positions, they just stick to hot button issues that play well on TV. Couple that with lobbyists and special interest groups to give them butt loads of... more... - Jason Shultz from twhirl
Of course J Phil. It's one perspective, one article, out of MANY. - Anna Haro
I honestly don't know what the terms "left" and "right" mean anymore in American politics. I try to figure out who has the best command of the facts and who is making the most sense. This article makes a great deal of sense. (If I must define myself politically with a label, it would be "progressive libertarian.") - Sean McBride
"Here's what Sarah Palin represents: being a fat fucking pig who pins "Country First" buttons on his man titties and chants "U-S-A! U-S-A!" at the top of his lungs while his kids live off credit cards and Saudis buy up all the mortgages in Kansas." - wow...harsh. - Chris Hollander

Taibbi *nails it* w/ the consumption of candidates as media entertainment. Infotainment has utterly corrupted news such that they are largely indistinguishable now. A huge disservice to the populace. And, of course, it results in this insane Reality TV show in front of us. - Ayşe E.

Why is the entire country not going, "WTF? You can't find a person more qualified in the entire Republican party? REALLY?!?!" Her selection was condescending to our entire citizenry, and everyone seems to be rolling with it. - Robert Fischer
Why aren't more Republican women outraged that the party thinks so little of women that when they feel the need to add a vagina to the ticket, they don't give a damn about whether she's actually qualified? - Trish R
why aren't they more outraged? because they're living vicariously via the pit bull. they see her and say, 'she's just like me'. but prettier and i bet you they aren't willing to admit that. so they over-identify with her and i'm left saying, 'yea, but i wouldn't vote you president of a committee of 2.' - Admiral Anika
Liked only because of the picture, not because I have any interest in US politics. ;-) - Kol Tregaskes
"But watching Palin's speech, I had no doubt that I was witnessing a historic, iconic performance. The candidate sauntered to the lectern with the assurance of a sleepwalker — and immediately launched into a symphony of snorting and sneering remarks, taking time out in between the superior invective to present herself as just a humble gal with a beefcake husband and a brood of healthy,... more... - Roberto Bonini
"The rest of Palin's speech was the same dog-whistle crap Republicans have been railing about for decades. Palin's crack about a mayor being "like a community organizer, except that you have actual responsibilities" testified to the Republicans' apparent belief that they can win elections till the end of time running against the Sixties. (They're probably right.)" - Roberto Bonini

What you PC people are missing out on...
Picture 2.png
On the left is Firefox on Windows XP. On the right is Firefox on OS X. Same laptop screen. This is why I feel yucky when I have to work in Windows now. Granted, I don't have ClearType installed on the Windows side. But it doesn't make things THAT much better. IE7 is even worse. - Paul Reynolds
Pay no mind to what that text actually says, I'm still editing it :o) - Paul Reynolds
I thought Firefox did its own text rendering regardless of the OS. Hmm. This clearly shows that I was wrong. - James (@willia4)
Meanwhile, I'm missing out on low priced commodity hardware and a large selection of game titles. (Figured I'd beat any Windows zealots to the punch) - Paul Reynolds
Windows: it's all about minesweeper. You think I'm kidding... - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I have noticed things are a lot clearer on my MBP than on my PC. Font and graphics-wise. It's refreshing. - Araceli
Araceli - Yeah. OS X's text rendering is a trillion miles ahead of anything out of Redmond. - James (@willia4)
My fonts are on Vista and they look TONS better than what you are seeing. ClearType DOES make a huge difference to me. I can't use a computer without it. Reminds me too much of 1994. - Robert Scoble

wrong use of "you're" in the "If you don't understand these guidelines" paragraph. Should be "your" - Imabug
I have to say I far prefer the non-cleartype one. Is something wrong with me? =p - Daniel Bruce
imo, this discussion is of... dubious value. 1.) most folks would prefer the rendering that they're most familiar with- personally, I prefer the vista/ff rendering, and find the osx rendering artificially bold. 2.) the exact clear type (or osx font rendering) settings is hardware dependant. what looks great on your monitor may end up looking crappy when screenshotted and displayed on my monitor, due to things like pixel ordering, DPI, resolution, screen technology, etc. - Chris Hollander
This, this right here, beautiful text rendering, is the one single reason I'm lusting after OS X. Safari on windows has the OS X style rendering, so it's possible on windows; just that Msoft has adopted clarity over font smoothing. Joel from Fogcreek has a good article detailing how the company philosophy is reflected in the font smoothing choices: http://www.joelonsoftware.com/items... - vijay
I went from programming full time (a heavy text reading occupation) exclusively on Windows for 8 years to OS X and it was something to get used to... it seemed blurry. But now Windows feels to aliased and clunky to me. - Paul Reynolds
How does it look on Linux? ;) When I first moved to the Mac, the fonts did feel slightly blurry, but they feel perfect now. Depends on what you've been used to. - Paul Grav
If that's all I'm missing then I'm pretty sure I'll survive. I can adjust my fonts in windows, turn off cleartype or turn it back on, so it'll be ok. - Jason Shultz from twhirl
I love my Mac, but I still have trouble stomaching it's font antialiasing. ClearType++. - Evan Sims
At first I thought the point was showing that based on browser/OS sniffing, the Baker's Dog website WAS charging $4.95 to Windows customers and WAS NOT charging Mac visitors at all! Then I realized the same text flowed differently and was outside the screenshot. Now that would have been a new kind of Windows tax. - Micah Wittman
Hrmm... Micah... the wheels are turning. Maybe a discount if you're using Firefox (read: not IE) to buy your dog treats? :oB - Paul Reynolds
C'mon, XP is a trillion years old. Get Win7 and enjoy it's nice font smoothing. And here's a great article for those who is praising Mac font rendering: http://www.joelonsoftware.com/items.... Mac and Win font rendering mechanisms both have advantages, Mac is more print-optimised, while Win is screen-optimised. - Kirill Petrovsky
You only need to activate ClearType and the page looks like it should. And yes, it makes a difference... - Flynn (Michael A. Volz)
so...we're supposed to spend $500 more for a computer that renders texts differently? I think I'll use ClearType or other fonts on Windows and treat myself to another tech gadget. - brainno722 (Peter)
Yes. - Paul Reynolds
Enable cleartype and yes it makes a tonne of difference. - Adi

Female orgasms and a 'rule of thumb' -- latimes.com - http://www.latimes.com/feature...
thumb[1].jpg
ruler[1].jpg
"Kim Wallen, professor of psychology and behavioral neuroendocrinology at Emory University, is busy doing the math to find out. And, yes, he says, simple physiology may have a lot to do with orgasm ease -- specifically, how far a woman's clitoris lies from her vagina. That number might predict how easily a woman can experience orgasms from penile stimulation alone -- without help from fingers, toys or tongue -- during sexual intercourse. In fact, there's even an easy "rule of thumb," Wallen says: Clitoris-vagina distances less than 2.5 cm -- that's roughly from the tip of your thumb to your first knuckle -- tend to yield reliable orgasms during sex. More than a thumb's length? Regular intercourse alone typically might not do the trick." - RAPatton
"Recently, Wallen dug up Bonaparte's measurements and analyzed them with modern statistical techniques. Sure enough, he found a striking correlation. Now he is hoping to do his own measurement study. Preliminary work has revealed that only about 7% of women always have orgasms with sex alone, he says, while 27% say they never do. The current research hold-up: developing a reliable, at-home technique for measuring C-V distance, especially one that can deal with stretchy skin." - RAPatton

'Embarassed' sheriff reprimands deputies in Midland, Texas for waitress posing on cop car - http://www.nydailynews.com/news...
'Embarassed' sheriff reprimands deputies in Midland, Texas for waitress posing on cop car
"An embarrassed Sheriff Gary Painter fired one Midland County deputy and suspended three others without pay after a scantily dressed waitress holding a rifle posed for photographs on the hood of a patrol vehicle. Round Rock officers were dispatched to the restaurant after someone reported the waitress with the weapon, which had been given to her by one of the deputies who had been attending a training session near Austin. The incident occurred last week in the parking lot of a Twin Peaks restaurant, which promotes its "fun, friendly and sometimes flirty atmosphere!" The deputies told Painter that they had about three to five beers each. A fifth deputy who remained inside the eatery got a letter of reprimand." - Derrick from Bookmarklet

Interstate 10 curves up and out of New Orleans, looping out of the Big Easy and chasing the Gulf Coast towards points east. About thirty minutes outside the city, just after the I-510 interchange, a set of faded blue structures rises on the southern horizon. These are the derelict roller coasters of Six Flags New Orleans, which closed in advance of Hurricane Katrina and has yet to reopen. The park was not so much shut down as abandoned—sacrificed, almost, to the encroaching storm. Merchandise stayed on shelves, electronics remained in place, and the logs in the flume ride were left stuck halfway up their plastic hills. The sole preparation for Katrina seems to be a message on the park’s signboard, still visible more than three years later: CLOSED FOR STORM. The property opened as Jazzland in 2000. Rides such as the Bayou Blaster and The Big Easy Ferris Wheel were sprinkled through lands with similarly local-sounding names, including ‘Cajun Country’ and the ‘French Quarter.’ After low... more... - Cee Bee

trying to become one of those people who eats a good breakfast, but don't like a lot of bfast foods. What do you eat first thing?
I can't seem to think beyond Yogurt. Have you read the Michael Pollan books? - Matthew DeVries
Consider a handful of homemade trail mix: dried fruit, nuts, perhaps Chex-like cereal or pretzel sticks. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I can't hear homemade without thinking "made by hoes" - Matthew DeVries
Jumbo multi-grain Rice Krispies w/ honey - Brad
Fruit has been my saviour. I never used to eat breakfast, as food just didn't take my fancy that early in the morning. Now I eat a selection of grapes, melon, watermelon, mandarin, apple etc. Easy to digest, not too filling for an early start, and it really does give you the energy you need! Would be great with yoghurt as Matthew sugested. - Charlotte M
Eggs. Sometimes scrambled with all sorts of stuff to eliminate the breakfast feel--made into burrito has the same effect (and pre-made and frozen makes it quick while cheap); sometimes raw stirred into limeade (I've found it best masks the taste and consistency) which makes it really quick, while still really solid. Yogurt is also a big one, just not as frequent. - ryan
Depends on how adventurous I feel. Usually cereal, but sometimes eggs and french toast. I also have protein shake mix that I'm trying to get into. - Rochelle
ZOMG don't like breakfast foods? I could eat eggs, cereal, waffles or toast for every meal! - rowlikeagirl
Fruit yogurth goes down the easiest. Or just a rich smoothy can be quite tasty and healthy too. - James Kuypers
A mug of hot chocolate for me. I usually eat a large lunch. - Eric Geller
My portable b'fast is a banana (sometimes yogurt). I only eat traditional breakfast foods for other meals. I have neither the time nor the appetite in the morning. - Ayşe E.
homemade smoothies - Chris Hollander
Ham, egg, and cheese sandwich. Add a little hot sauce for kick. Oooo! Sausage Gravy is also fantastic! Or did you mean good as in healthy? - Alex Scrivener
I usually eat good leftovers or a sandwich, with some veggies or fruit. I just treat it like any other meal. I like breakfast foods, just generally not early in the day. - Jennifer Dittrich
scrambled eggs. If I need something quick and portable, I'll bake/broil some chicken andouille or Italian sausage the night before. - Spidra Webster
Okay here's my breakfast of winners: a handful of quick-cook wholegrain oatmeal (uncooked), 2 tbsps of ground flax, a handful of 2 scoops raisin bran, a handful of fresh or frozen blueberries. Add warm milk or microwave for 1:30 - 2:30 mins (depending on if blueberries are frozen and how warm you want your cereal) and - viola! And it actually tastes really good. You won't be hungry until lunch with this breakfast - guaranteed! - WorldofHiglet
My breakfasts: 1) cottage cheese with flax seeds, celery, fiber powder, and corn thins. 2) yogurt with buckwheat groats & an apple. 3) cereal with nuts. 4) oatmeal (lately with peanut butter mixed in), or 5) egg whites with ground chicken breast crumbles and cheese. Occasionally I will have a smoothie, English muffin, or bagel, but they're rare. - Alix Whitmire
the days I don't go to work I really love eating breakfast but when I go to work I don't have much time to eat .. so usually I just drink a glass of milk or juice - Viva Vida
i probably won't help, but it's Hersey's Hugs... and sometimes burritos. But Sat mornings after my runs, I get beer with my omlettes! - Liana Shanes
I like a simple bagel and cream cheese... but if I have time, I'll definitely have eggs. Scrambled. - Ryan - @magicofpi
2% cottage cheese and fresh fruit (pineapple, strawberries, blueberries, cantaloupe) or a smoothie made with strawberry & banana, plain nonfat yogurt orange juice and rice milk. - jcunwired
I can't bear to even think about food before noon but know I need breakfast and have tried oatmeal, cereal, bagels, fruit, and yoghurt. I have found all either too heavy or too sweet. I'm still looking for something that will kick up my metabolism and provide energy without making me sick :( I'll be watching this thread for more ideas! - Renee from BuddyFeed
Try cottage cheese if you like it, or plain greek yogurt. - Alix Whitmire
steel cut oatmeal with fresh fruit or a spoon of strawberry jam is a great way to start the day. - sean808080
Bagel toasted with stuff on top. It's fast its easy its portable and you can change it up. My normal is everything bagel with guacamole, nutritional yeast and tofurky slices. Just remember to brush your teeth after that one. - Josh Wilkins
Whole grain cereal with blueberries and a banana mixed in, nonfat milk. Large glass of fresh OJ. - LogEx
Instant Oatmeal -- Bagel with Cream Cheese on Fridays ;) - Jorge Escobar
Luna bar. Kashi cereal. I can be hypoglycemic, so it's important for me to get protein in, but most "breakfast" sources of protein are so full of fat. When I do oatmeal, I add brown sugar (or the splenda version of it) and almond slices. - Ladybug Heather
Yogurt with walnuts in it. Add a touch of sugar or Splenda if that doesn't sound like enough fun. - Matt Cutts
Bacon. With bacon on the side. Sprinkle with Bacon Salt (tm). - Otto
cottage cheese and blueberries - William Harryman
Usually wholegrain toast with Vegemite or peanut butter, and coffee. Only because I can't stomach cereal and coffee in the same meal for some weird reason. Porridge and coffee I can do though. I like a cooked breakfast, but am too lazy to make it. - Mellissa Claus
Egg whites scrambled with ground turkey and a little cheese - Brian Newman
I like oatmeal. :) - mjc
My cousin eats whatever is in the fridge/cupboard that takes her fancy - sliced tomato with black pepper, soup, rice, leftovers. Something is better than nothing :o) - Mellissa Claus
Quick and easy: take piece of potato bread, slather some peanut butter on it, fold in half and wash down with a big glass of cold milk. - CAJ, somewhere else from iPhone

Carbs kill me, so cereal or toast is out. Smoothies are good if I get around to them, but my favourite are Irish sausages and eggs (fresh from my own hens). You can really eat whatever you want for breakfast. - Ann Donnelly

One Way Android Can Become Viable - http://smarterware.org/2862...
"Android has to run on decent hardware (preferably a handset Google designs)" why do folks assume that google has capabilities to design human usable hardware? - Chris Hollander
Probably because they design their own servers and other hardware which they use. And, no matter what you or I think about them, when they set an eye on something, they do it. - ryan

The Shining will always freak me the hell out because there was a very gruesome murder around the corner from my Aunt's bakery in town when I was a kid living back east. Anime got nuthin on real life imitation when it comes to this. - TheMacMommy
