i guess this would be the first phase in a more complete redesign. but still makes the UE so disconnected and more confusing to new users who come to twitter for the 1st time

Agree it disconnects UE & provides no value to existing user For new users I do think it's an improvement. It may be confusing, but the tagline and search will give them a better first interaction and potentiality help acquire the folks saying “I just don’t have anything to say.”

Newest. Read stuff from the past couple of hours, then go to my 'news' folder and mark all as read. It's irrelevant more quickly than stuff from my humor/science/art feeds

Newest. But a much better sort choice would be by personal relevance PLUS global strategic impact. Google Reader needs souped up recommender features for news.

I'm sure they've thought of 600 ways to improve search, but I would say its a wise strategy to release early & iterate often.
