Isaac Asimov's The Foundation Trilogy (Foundations, Foundation and Empire, Second Foundation) as adapted by the BBC in 1973, in eight one hour long episodes, part of the Open Source Audio collection on Archive.org (free to download and/or stream) | Internet Archive - http://www.archive.org/details...
Read this when I was a kid. Love to think of all the tech that Asimov thought of that's actually come to pass...
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Well acted radio play, the abridgement/adaptation is also very well done through the first one and a half episodes.
- Michael W. May
@MWM why just the first one and a half? does it get crappy after that or is that just how far you are into it?
- Louis Simoneau
OMG, I had no idea this existed... Foundation trilogy still tops on my SF list. Will definitely check these out.
- Adrian
I only discovered it an hour and a half ago ;)
- Michael W. May
Download 'em quick. I'm willing to bet the BBC doesn't know someone uploaded them there. The BBC is pretty aggressive about copyright and region restriction.
- Spidra Webster
I'm really digging the sound effects. The acting is properly stiff. I approve.
- Adrian
@Spidra I doubt it: "This audio is part of the collection: Open Source Audio"

These have been online for years, I'm sure the BBC knows they're up. Most public libraries even have them.

I will enjoy making my spouse listen to this ;)

I'm through 5 and a half and it is making me quite certain I will be reading the trilogy yet again in the coming days.

Paul Bucheit wrote that they no longer had access to Twitter's firehose, so it sounds like it may have had something to do with Facebook's acquiring them, but don't quote me on that.

it's weird that twitter signed a deal to give access to google and bing, but friendfeed seems to have lost that deal.
- gregory
Paul or Bret: what is the latest status please?

The latest status? They're busy working valiantly on mincing the glory of their FriendFeed UI into the horror show that is Zuckerberg's Facebook UI.

- Steve Gillmor
I am trying to locate the conversation where he said this. But it's clear that Twitter is not giving FF the firehose for *some* reason. And they still aren't.

- Micah Wittman
Awesome Micah, I was going nuts for a while. So without going to speculation what do you make of "Twitter's realtime feed from them is gone"? Is it scalability issues? But Google and Bing have no problems?
- Jorge Escobar
It's speculation, but I think it's Twitter saying "Ooopsy, now how did that happen? We'll put Top Men on it." and a Friendfeed Alum with "we hope to get it restored" as technically true, but belying that they know or suspect it's a TWTR business decision dragging-of-the-feet and not merely technical. But this can all be cleared up with an official statement :) Maybe I missed it - if so I apologize for wild speculation.
- Micah Wittman
Thanx Micah, Jorge. We'll wait for the update from Paul or Bret.
- Steve Gillmor
I wasn't seeing updates from Twitter to Friendfeed for 12 hours, but a manual refresh works ok. It is interesting to note the differences in 'real time' for Friendfeed, Twitter and FaceBook they all behave differently - only one of them seems to be 'real' real time -\

Burmese Orchids. In November 2007, the Rainbow and the Hirsute Paphiopedilum Orchids were reported as extinct in Burma. But there is good news about the unique flower.
They arguably captivate the human imagination more than any other plant species on the planet. With exotic names like the Butterfly, Sharry Baby, Dancing Lady, Oncidium Twinkles, Ghost and Slipper Orchid, orchids are available in a stunning range of colours with fragrances that are unrivalled in nature. The exquisite flower is ranked the second most popular potted plant in the United States and could soon replace the Poinsettia as number one.

Something interesting happened to me today during my Playdough adventures at Georgia's kindy (http://friendfeed.com/jworthi...)... One of the kids called me 'Georgia's Dad'. I know I'm her dad but I have never been addressed by this title/name... Kinda cool... Actually, very cool :)

One suspects that few people read Twitter with meaningful attention, nor do they even pay much attention to what they post there. It's a black hole, sucking up everything in its vicinity into instant forgetfulness and oblivion.
That's a long bow to draw - what about some of the special interest groups such as haiku and poetry, not to mention geeky, techy stuff . . . and lists on Twitter make it much easier to focus and filter. I have a year's worth of tweets backed up here on FriendFeed - so that's not a black hole.
- Chris Loft
The stuff that is valuable on Twitter usually requires a much superior interface (like Friendfeed) to search, organize, annotate, discuss, manage, etc. in a useful and effective way. So why bother with Twitter at all; simply graduate to a more capable platform.
- Sean McBride
Friendfeed is superior in lots of ways . . . but I get a lot more reach and engagement on Twitter. Twitter and Friendfeed seem to work very well together (as well as with FaceBook); and each service is reaching a different cross section of people, globally. If I were to ignore Twitter I would lose friends who don't use Friendfeed; from Spain, South America, India, Thailand and a few other places.
- Chris Loft
Both platforms are capable in many different ways that are complimentary and effective - I think that both can coexist, and sure there's a lot of fluff that's not worth paying attention to, on both services.
- Chris Loft
Chris -- whatever platform works for you, works for you, and I respect that. My own experience: Twitter has seemed interesting in phases, but the interest always seems to pass for me because of the limitations of the interface and the lack of features. I do use Topsy quite often now, however, to search Twitter for the most influential news stories on specific topics.
- Sean McBride
(I just want to point out that I clicked "post" before the stripper heels comment. I was responding to the original post. Really.)
- Steve is older than ever
actually, since around 1994, most of the people i've met IRL have either been other musicians, other ppl in IT (from the workplace) or ppl from the Internet that i've met up with face-to-face.
- Joe Silence is not dead
the only new people I meet in real life are new coworkers and parents of new kids on my son's sports teams. otherwise, I would know no one
- Alan Simpson
the last three women i was involved with, including my wife, i met on IRC in the mid-1990s. either i'm a pioneer or pathetic...or a pathetic pioneer.
- Joe Silence is not dead
In all seriousness, it IS hard to meet people once you're out of school and are say, established in your career. I've had friends go the Craigslist route for people to hang out with, and that's worked ok for her, but might seem weird to other people. I've been fortunate to meet people via Twitter and FF and then hang out with them in real life. Say, how did we meet, Cecily? ;)
- Derrick
I wish I had advice. I have the same problem.
- Spidra Webster
Traditionally -- church, school, work, family gatherings were meeting places. For my generation bars. I think online arranged meeting (dating sites) is very common these days. It has an aura of distaste around it but I think it works.
- Brian Sullivan
People just walk up to me like I have "I like talking to random people on the street" written on my forehead.
- Amber, Random Time Lord
you know we're all a bunch of social-awkward misfits. that's why we're hanging out here instead of being out and meeting people.
- tiffany
But if you are not looking for a partner -- just to meet people it might get harder.
- Brian Sullivan
I only really meet new people through my kid's school. I'm not a social person. Um...I'm not a nice person? I don't go out of my way to get to know people. If I'm in a party setting, I have no problem *acting* social, but I don't invest myself in the situation because I assume I'd never see those people again until the next party.
- Anika
Yeah - kids are a way. Dogs too -- people with dogs always talk to other people with dogs.
- Brian Sullivan
Joe, Amber - do you guys make eye contact? Cause I never do and I pretty much never have strangers talk to me.
- Andrew C
Sometimes, accidentally. But most of the time I'll be focused elsewhere.
- Amber, Random Time Lord
Dogs and kids are agents of randomness that cut through adults' social inhibitions (cf. 101 Dalmations). Hang on though -- I thought that all Americans were outgoing and sociable and that it's only us Brits who have to be introduced before talking to strangers?
- Tim Ostler
I'm not a very friendly/outgoing person, but once you hang out at a place with a lot of people long enough, you notice the same people there and eventually get to know them. For me it's the bowling alley & bar. Or joining some kind of club/activity (softball & league bowling for me). I'm still not close close to a lot of them, but it's easier to hang out and have laughs.
- Rodfather
Now I'm imagining Steve in stripper heels.
- cecily
No kids (blech) and I can't have a dog because my landlord's a bastard. I've done the Internet thing but was hoping to branch out. Of course, part of this has to do with self esteem and thinking that nobody wants to hang out with me in real life, a way of thinking I'm trying like hell to get over.
- cecily
I used to be pretty active in local politics and a few gardening groups. I still keep in contact with people online, but I don't really hang out with them unless there's a political or gardening event. Maybe you can find a group that's of an interest to you and start there.
- Anika
Ugh, I'm with you. No kids, no pets, no social hobbies, no religion, can't go to bars (alcoholic). It's a conundrum.
- Lo
Well, *cough*, I could hang out with you. In a few weeks, anyways -- I'm away for two weeks starting Friday and am busy with last minute packing and whatnot.
- Andrew C
i always make eye contact. it's a struggle to avoid coming off as creepy, tho. somehow i do alright most of the time.
- Joe Silence is not dead
You like to go on bike rides? If you go on Active.com there are usually local people who want to do something that's not solely focused on training. Believe me, no matter what your interests, there is a social group out there, even if it's just meeting once a month and swapping techniques (like gardening).
- Anika

I go on bike rides with the Pedal Pushers, a group of folks from the library. The thing about living in Vancouver is most of the people I know who are cyclists are all WAY more fit than I am, and I can't keep up.

i guess the big thing is to not accidentally look too long at boobies or packages. :)

Come to think of it, the primary way I've met new people has been from starting new jobs.
- Andrew C
What's worked for me are SF&F book clubs (and to a lesser extent bookstores) and local techie community events such as user groups, BarCamps, and the like.
- Michael R. Bernstein
I want (need) to learn this skill. Especially in light of what Andrew just said. Leaving my job, I'm afraid that I'll be even more socially isolated.
- joey
Michael, bookstores sounds like a good place. How do you approach people without seeming creepy?
- Lo
@Joey - I was fine being a hermit (ish) in MV until I was laid off and couldn't get the non-zero amount of human interaction I require that way.
- Andrew C
Most bookstores have public events that are often attended by regulars regardless of subject/author.
- Anika
Standing in line or go up to someone and give them a compliment
- Lindsey is Fierce!
See, that's not something I do, and again, it goes back to self-esteem.
- cecily
Cecily, I have that same problem. I worry about being thought creepy if I ask someone out or ask for contact info or try to make that next step. So I wait for other people to do it and that rarely happens. Which is a weird thing to me because you'd think even if I were comfortable doing that, I'd be responsible for 50% of the time and other people would handle their 50% but it doesn't seem to happen that way.
- Spidra Webster
Thanks Anika, why didn't I think of that? Lo = social idiot
- Lo
Start smoking weed. You're bound to get a hookup's contact info. It's not odd to hang out and talk/rip a bowl while waiting to get hooked up. Stoners are usually cool people. :D I'm kidding but I met a lot of good friends that way.
- Rodfather
I always worry about 'coming on' to people. Oh yes, taking the little lap dog for a walk or hanging out with my daughter and all of a sudden strangers are having conversations with me. Perhaps I just don't look human by myself.
- Chris Loft
I like the cut of Rodfather's jib or would it be joint? I, too, seem to be having an issue meeting folks since I stopped the wild parties and hung up my spurs.
- Mathew A. Koeneker
Just don't discount online friendships and connections; For over a decade, my life has been immeasurably enriched by people I've never seen face. Immeasurably.
- Michael W. May
tl;dr . I've never known how to meet new people in a real life context. Doctor Who fandom (pre-internet) is when I finally starting meeting people. That spilled over onto the internet, and the rest is history (and/or boring). Many of the people I met through internet fandom have been my closest friends for over 15 years.
- Betsy (bentley) Vera
I met my down-the-block neighbors (after I'd been there three years) when walking for exercise after surgery (up and down and up and down the block). They were out smoking on their front steps. Befriended them while walking the dog and stopping to talk. We're now good friends. Through them, I met four other families on my block. I'm also on a howdy basis with a lot of neighborhood people I met while walking the dog.

Nicole Kidman reveals her love life has been kinky as she opens up about 'strange sexual fetish' encounters
| Mail Online - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowb...
"She has always remained tight-lipped about her 10 year marriage to actor Tom Cruise and vows she will take all her secrets to the grave. But in one of her most revealing-ever interviews, Nicole Kidman let slip how her experiences of love ranged from ‘mundane’ marriage to ‘strange sexual fetish stuff’. The 42-year-old actress, currently married to country singer Keith Urban, said her life had been about exploring different types of love. ‘I’ve explored obsession. I’ve explored loss and love in terms of being in a grief-stricken place, I’ve explored strange sexual fetish stuff, I’ve explored the mundane aspect of marriage, and monogamy,’ she said. But while she confessed she had previously experienced the ‘mundane’ side of relationships, she described her present marriage as ‘raw’ and ‘dangerous’."

Now, Im confused....does this mean I should stop posting pics of myself or not? I don't do it for validation and I don't do it because I'm vain. I thought I was doing it to share a bit more of my world with people......perhaps I was wrong????
Fuck whatever people think. They want to drown in a pool of their own misery then let them.
- Lindsey is Fierce!
fuck the haters. I love saying hi to my friends visually, and I love that you let me.

Oh for fuck sake, if they, whomever *they* may be are too insecure, that's their issue not yours. I can't speak for everyone, but I enjoy seeing a glimpse into your life, it makes mine a little less mundane, keep it up love.
- Scott
Im just reading the discussion and honestly, I do it because its fun and they make me, and hopefully other people, laugh. It comes from a happy place.
- Mary Carmen
There really is no winning this. Either one is really vain or one is really insecure and requires constant validation. In my case, I'm a strange mix of both so I win!! sigh. I really do rock, you know. Oh wait. This was about you. Girl, do your thing. Like they said, your feed, your choice. And the hide button is always there.

You really think this is the best time for this discussion? *hides thread*

Well, now that you've hidden the thread, it's probably silly to ask, Iris, but in your opinion would there be a good time for this discussion?
- pea ♥ fierce as a woozle
I come to suspect there is drama happening somewhere else that I'm uninvolved in, but let me reiterate: You're making some of your friends very happy. Keep doing that, if you're so inclined.
- Jenica
I really don't care....I was sorta making light of it. Of course everyone wants validation, but, speaking only for myself, that is not my motivation. So, Im just gonna do my thing. And now Im gonna get a haircut. And I will post what it looks like when I get back!
- Mary Carmen
Keep posting the pictures. Half the reason I subscribed to you was to see what sweet shoes you are wearing on any given day.
- Amanda
I can't speak for Iris, but when someone posts about feeling inadequate and unattractive when comparing themselves to photos on FF, that seems like a bad time to have this conversation. Jenica, glad to hear that, because I was thinking "fuck those people" was incredibly harsh. Lastly "I'm confused" is almost always code for "I'm about to passively agressively rip into someone." Way to make someone else's unhappiness and shame about you, MC.
