Geez. Nobody's ever said that to me. I guess I already am smiling? Maybe you guys shoul-- never mind.
- Brad Greer
@sarahlane he could instead offer something more useful, like chocolate!
- Courtney Engle
What about "hey baby girl", I hear they like that one.
- Jesse Hattabaugh
There's nothing more demeaning to females than being called "baby mama." I hate it when things like that get accepted into the vernacular as being either funny, or cool. Hell, it's even considered 'respectful' by some. But what's the truth here? Bottom line is, a guy is basically saying to a girl that he looks at her as someone he wishes to impregnate. Yeah, that's real classy.
- Fleagle
I thought "baby mama" was for a woman you had *already* impregnated but to whom you were not married. I've never heard it used in the way you describe. See also: "baby daddy"
- Brad Greer
No. Not at all. I've heard guys say that to girls they're hitting on. As if that's going to do the trick.
- Fleagle
I challenge anyone to find a more compact way then "baby momma" to describe someone you've impregnated, but are otherwise not involved with. LOL.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
Attention women. Men really hate it when you call them Champ. :-)

@Rahsheen, I don't suppose you read my response?

This is clearly not my cat. If this was my cat he's have one arm shoved down into the printer trying to tear up all the internal whirling bits with his bare claws.

even a flat cat... faxes just can't handle the hair. You'd have to shave the cat first, else the hair will burn and stick to the drum... a mess! (I am extrapolating from transparencies, mind, i don't have access to a cat to test)

Steve, it does look a little out of place, but cats are pretty bendy. ;-)

http://dmu.tgfi.net/ - I have a service running every minute that auto-updates the images in the pool. If it goes down, a service will restart it.
- Greg Benedict
the website is not mirror of the pool. at this moment, there's a shot in the flickr pool, active (not save10/delete10) and it doesn't show in the website.
- Mo Tabesh
The script is set to pull any shots in the pool every minute, regardless of saves/deletes. Next time this happens, let me know which image to see if it's a code issue or API issue preventing it from showing up.
- Greg Benedict
consider this. I suggest keep Posey and Pierre as the only admins, have two mods Sandy and Roger. build on the current group since the foundation is already there and possibly the smoothest transition for all concerned.
Wendy, it sounds like there is a lot of animosity in the new group. Maybe the thing to do is to just start over in the group here, that way nothing is being impossed on anyone. Whoever wants to can still stay there. We can get the new group up to 3,000 members in short order, and a lot of interesting new people. Those who prefer the old group can stay there or do both if they want. As...

- kinobe
TH, i wouldn't call it animosity. you know DMU, people get all worked up and angry all the time. the whole idea was brought up just yesterday. they'll be calm soon. that's why i said we shouldn't rush into anything.
- Mo Tabesh
Good point Mo. Nothing needs to be done right away.
- Thomas Hawk
from iPhone
tmt, I don't think anything is going on right now. I think an idea was put forward to think about combining the DMUs on Flickr but I don't think it was well received, so I think the idea at this point is that the idea's out there and lets just see how things go, but business as usual for the time being.
- Thomas Hawk
TH it was very well received. VERY well. One person felt that the approach was a little to "demands" oriented, but that is all. People would still prefer to see this rift undone by large margins.
- Shims
I'd be down for that. We already have a 1,000 in a pool with no discussions. I've voiced my desire to have minimal amount of admins very clear, and frankly, I don't understand why Roger has not been made a mod in any of DMU groups. No one looks at the pool more frequent than he does.
- Ivan Makarov
It just felt more or less like a barrage of negativity to me and ego. Maybe I'm being too sensitive though. Frankly, it doesn't mean a great deal to me one way or the other at this point. I doubt I will be very active in *any* flickr forum on a personal level going forward. I'm just not willing to personally invest emotionally in something that can be destroyed nor risk my own account...

TH only Sandelion got minimally upset ... and not at the idea, simply the implied demand.
- Shims
It just felt negative to me in general. Mo didn't seem to like the idea at first either. But a lot of it felt negative overall and really egoish and selfish and reminded me in a way of alot of the old old DMU. Where people like Superchou and Beebo and Corin became these petty tyrants when in power. It felt like power was really important to some of the personalities involved, which is...

TH it was overwhelmingly positively embraced. And comparing anyone to those cunts is unfair and inaccurate. People are edgy after putting so much time and effort into something, having it disappear, and then re-investing a ton of effort to reform what we had. Anyone here is welcome to reach out again should you so desire. Laters.
- Shims
Shims - your DMU isn't too much different either. 20 active members and 480 inactive ones. But that's not the point. The negativity from yesterday, and it was not just from Sandy, was not something I've enjoyed.
- Ivan Makarov
It's not in any way shape or form "My" DMU for the record. It's ours. Always has been.
- Shims
Ivan, what would you like to see changed in the group before you consider joining it. I get the feeling your not interested in it and only want us all to join the other one, There has to be a little give and take here. I thought my idea would work well, anyway.....
- Wendy Martyn
EVERYBODY wants to get together back on flickr SOMEWHERE. several people need to stop being dicks.
- andertho
Ivan and TH let's work this out and have a strong group again on flickr
- Wendy Martyn
I'm fine with working on it. But I'd like to see something that everyone agrees on. Maybe that's not possible. Andertho's idea about starting a new group might be the way to go. But then the question comes up again who would admin it and that alone is bound to get people all worked up. I'm actually pretty open to doing whatever. I doubt I'll be super involved in a new forum anyways....
- Thomas Hawk
Too much argument, too much hostility and too little consensus going on right now. I think starting a new group might be the only way to go. There will be those who won't come who simply don't like us, and others won't come because stars next to their names matter too much, but that's life.
- Ivan Makarov
Sounds like you've got your mind set on opening the forum up for ff group. Just do it then, because this is becomming divisive without reason.
- Wendy Martyn
that's not true wendy. nobody is going to rush to a conclusion here. we were all clear we are not going to make a decision soon. we were just talking.
- Mo Tabesh
Apparently Ivan feels he understand peoples motivations perfectly and has rushed to quite a few conclusions.
- Shims
Meanwhile hopes are raised and then dashed with indecision, come on let's get together on this
- Wendy Martyn
Agree with Mo. Nobody is going to do anything anytime soon. Nothing wrong with taking some time to get things right.
- Thomas Hawk
I think we should just stop the discussion altogether, take a recess till 2010.
- Ivan Makarov
no. we should just chill and speak to each other reasonably.
- Mo Tabesh
i hope everyone realizes that every "real" person that opposes this can be counted on one hand, the rest of the opposition is just a pageantry of trolls... if anything can be learned from what happened it's that you cannot engage in any meaningful conversation with trolls hell bent on destruction. in fact trying to do so only deepens the rift and sting of animosity.
- bluetick
so I don't know where this is going, but I think we've all come to a complete halt on this, probably taken a step back from where we were a week ago.
- Ivan Makarov
The truth is there is no one who opposes it. There are quite a few that oppose folding up tent again just when things are returning to psuedo ab-normal and a few others who are tired of having their motives impinged ... myself included. Beyond that, its nothing but egos getting in the way. Perhaps the only path forward is a more direct level of communication. Communication break-down seems to be a big problem here.
- Shims
time for a real chat over beers/pepsi (for me) somewhere?
- Ivan Makarov
you get that from "us" admins, my smoke is reserved for "them" admins.
- Mo Tabesh
So whats it going to be folks ... are we going to put aside petty scwabbles and all play nice or is this "us" "them" shit gonna continue. I looking forward to either a celebratory beer or shutting down my Flickr account if this blows up.
- Shims
personally, i am full of dmu bullshit. not much has changed for me, and i rather take a break. others are on their own. i will keep cleaning the pool unless a decision has made.
- Mo Tabesh
Personally, I am full of burrito. Chicken with pinto beans and some nice spicy salsa.
- Shims
Mo, I'm starting to think your never happy, so....can we move forward and tease the trolls ;-}

There are a lot of people acting like children with regards to this issue. Little children. Wearing diapers.

lol andertho. chill, it's all gonna be ok.
- Mo Tabesh
Tom - I have two people living in my home still wearing diapers.
- Ivan Makarov
ivan, i thought it was a good idea, but you don't have to do it if you don't want to. i understand, you are a busy man.
- Mo Tabesh
yeah, time is of the essence Mo. but i think you'll do a good job. but having any kind of status is responsibility. and drama. i don't need it right now.
- Ivan Makarov
meanwhile, Mo - I'm off to take my son to Sharks - Stars game. I'll tell Heatley hi from you.
- Ivan Makarov
"Twice, Infinity Ward asks if you're absolutely sure you want to see it. The scene, the fourth you'll encounter in the most widely anticipated game of the year, could be "disturbing" or "offensive", repeats the warning. You smile and agree that, yes, you are sure you want to see it. This is a videogame. They give them 18 certificates, but only to appease people who don't really understand what's going on. Sure, the images of violence and bloodshed on Modern Warfare's battlefields can be disturbing to an onlooker, but death in a first-person shooter is a five-second setback, a micro-reincarnation designed to provide challenge and an impetus to improve, not distress."

Let's see how this works. I have just completed "The Golden City" by John Twelve Hawks. The book can be described as knee-jerk paranoid crypto-punk sci-fi, I think. Not a fantastic writer, but the ideas are quite interesting. Third in a trilogy of books about a global society in the nowtime-to-near-future era where everything is going towards a tracked, monitored and taped world. I liked it. Was done in two days. Swords, quantum computers, dystopia, what more could you ask for? No William Gibson, but close, a quick read, recommended.
- Ryan MacLean
Cheers Ryan. I'll give that a go. I'm reading Pride and Prejudice and Zombies at the moment. It uses the original P&P text wrapped around a zombie storyline. It's very funny, and well worth picking up even if (like me) you have no interest in Jane Austin.
- Chris Nixon
Wow that sounds interesting! I have read Austen's Pride and Prejudice, so it might be very funny.
- Ryan MacLean
Just finished "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell. Couldn't put it down.
- Ivan Makarov
That was a great book, Ivan. I loved the bits about hockey, being a Canuck and all. The Korean air example was also somewhat refreshing. I think a lot of people could learn a lesson from that chapter. Another good read, highly recommended, though I will admit I listened to the audiobook instead of turning pages on that one, in my daily travels to work.
- Ryan MacLean
Yeah, the part about hockey was good, although it doesn't always work, especially with high profile athletes who dominate regardless of age. Crosby, Thornton, Ovechkin, Franzen, Malkin, just to name a few I checked were all born in the 2nd half of the year. However, Heatley is a January birth, and Setoguchi was born on a perfect date, January 1st, which is interesting. But Sharks are rather evenly distributed. I think the rule applies mostly to junior hockey and it's all a fair game after that.
- Ivan Makarov
There was more to that than just birthdate, Ivan. Some players have played longer because they had access to rinks earlier, could walk earlier etc. It's not as simple as the day they were born, he goes on to talk about the magical 10,000 hour mark, which I don't necessarily agree with, but does come close to what he's trying to expound: experience matters. Experience coupled with an ounce of talent or natural ability makes you that much better.
- Ryan MacLean
just starting "The Intimate Philosophy of Art" by John Armstrong
- charlotte
Sounds heavy, is it any good? I remember urging Mo to read something similar a while ago. But I digress.
- Ryan MacLean
a few pages in, its interesting so far, not overly heavy language wise. He's kicked it off by discussing that feeling of "Is that all there is?" when looking at some masterpieces... here's a review http://www.amazon.co.uk/Intimat... I'm hoping it'll improve my critiquing skills!!
- charlotte
just finished "Pattern Recognition" am looking for another good sci-fi time, looks like a good one. Of course my opinion is suspect since I loved "Anathem" a dubious sci-fi entry if there's ever was one.
- Ventri
Yeah I'm not a big fan of "sci-fi" either, but I think I've read all of Asimov at some point. Pattern Recognition was good. Spook Country was a good follow up.
- Ryan MacLean
Just picked up Golden City, Ryan...glad to hear you liked it.
- Lee Shelly
Just started Haruki Murakami's "what I talk about when I talk about running". So far it's fantastic - gives you insight to his earlier work, and talks about his approach to life in general. Good for the hardcore Murakami fan (author of some fine flippin books).
- Ryan MacLean
Next up: Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, based on a recommendation from a friend from a long time ago.
- Ryan MacLean
For the Sci-Fi people... any Iain M Banks fans out there? The Culture is in my opinion, one of the coolest sci-fi civilisations ever.
- JediPein
Not big on sci-fi, but are you recommending that book? Ender's game has surprisingly little sci-fi stuff in it, which really wouldn't matter I suppose, it's an amazing book. I love putting of reading awesome books because you've forgotten all that was said about them and you can approach them with a clear heart. This is rocking my socks off.
- Ryan MacLean
Ryan, The Culture is a creation of Bank's that runs through a whole series of novels, space operas as they're sometimes called these days. You don't have to read them in order, and I didn't, but still got my socks off... the first one is Consider Phlebas... they have cool names for ships such as "It's My Party And I'll Dance If I Want To"... and "Size Isn't Everything".....
- JediPein
Those are some pretty rockin' ship names.
- Ryan MacLean
just do it man... i think you'll really like it...
- JediPein
Pein, will get to it, I promise... Trying to work on the "reading list". You know, the ones people have recommended over the years? Just diving into Dune at the moment. Like I said, not a big sci-fi guy, but there are many audiobooks out there on the cheap in this genre, so why not? This one has a huge cast of voices, and so far, so good! Not a David Lynch cast, mind you, but nonetheless...
- Ryan MacLean
Dune is a good one. May go back and re-read it. Actually, I'm looking for something trashy right now, like a thriller or something, or a war diary. I find the British accounts of the Afghan/Irag wars quite interesting.
- JediPein
Just picked up Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchet. While I'm not religious (and have no religion) I somehow always enjoy stories about heaven and hell, good and bad, angels and demons, etc etc etc. Not far in enough to give a review but so far so good.

I've been playing around with Flickr's new people tags for the past hour or so. I like them *a lot*. The only thing is it's that much more metadata to lose when they nuke your account without warning.
I've decided I want to have fun with the people tags. I want to find as many pictures of Gary Coleman that I can, and people tag them as me.
- Adam Harrison
That sounds like a good strategy for you Adam. You do actually look like him a little bit.
- Thomas Hawk
BTW, is someone people tags an image with your name, it shows up on your recent activity, but it breaks muting, so you can't get it out of your recent activity. Freakin' annoying.

Ah that stinks. I liked the mute feature! I don't need to know who won what sparkly gif award. So I'm gonna hafta deal with people tagging the hawk til doomsday huh?

Thomas, looking at the option it does allow you to enter an email address in the text field, however I guess this would depend on the email address that the user has linked to their account... which also begs the question, does it respect the 'don't display my email address' privacy, I assume it would.
- Travis Koger
it seems like you can add an email address to send them an email, I'm not sure it will query their database though to simply find a match if they are already on Flickr but you just can't find them. That would seem better to me.
- Thomas Hawk
I asked Heather if, with our favs now showing up in our profile, if our accounts could be flagged based on our favs. She said yes, that this was always the case because your faves could be creepy.
- Adam Harrison
bottom line: if flickr wants to delete your account the will - their TOS are so loose I believe there isn't a single account in which they would not be able to find a reason to delete

So someone who mainly photographs sunsets and bunny rabbits and only uploads the safest of safes to their Flickr account could still be deleted because they fave a lot of nudes, or candid shots of people... or whatever. WTF. Just, WTF.

The e-mail related an Oct. 5 conversation between officials at the U.S. Justice Department and their Swiss counterparts concerning Polanski, who is jailed in Zurich and fighting extradition. The district attorney’s office sent a packet summarizing the case, in which a 13-year-old girl accused the director of rape and sodomy, to Washington last week and Justice officials are to deliver it to Swiss prosecutors. The opening will be celebrated with a drive.in cinema where 250 of my pics will be presented before a show of biennale-artist Uwe Jäntsch. Can't tell you, how proud i am....
just to say: it's an incredible feeling to see his own pics for the first time on a size of more than 10 square meters. That's really something special.

everything is well except for the damn swine flu. they are now shutting down hospitals for visits, so my little son won't see Mom and his sister for few days while i'm stuck at home.

A beautiful name Ivan. Congrats to you and your family.

Our baby Nadya successfully made it to this world earlier this morning in the same place where we gave birth to Maks couple of years ago, Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Gatos, California. The only negative is that due to swine flu, they no longer allow kids to visit hospitals, so Maks won't meet his new sister or mommy for few more days. Bummer. Nadya's got big red cheeks, a head full of hair and beautiful little eyes. She's perfect.

Thanks guys. Life is indeed beautiful. It's amazing that even at such a young age she looks so different from her brother when he was born..

spdorsey on jedi savant's photo: "I'm going to cut you some slack and vote save, but you need a title. We usually delete pics with no title."http://www.flickr.com/photos... For the record, we delete photos with SHITTY titles, not with no titles.

There had better be a reason it doesn't have a title. A CLEAR, APPARENT reason.
- Steve Dorsey
Enh. Lots of works of art remain "untitled" by the artist.
- Stephanie Keating
@Stephanie: That is just fine. Name it "Untitled" or a blank name. Not IMG_1234. Then at least the photographer decided to leave it untitled. Leaving the default camera filename is just lazy.
