"Google co-founder Larry Page says the time for delays has passed: he wants the Federal Communications Commission to open up fallow "white space" in the TV broadcast spectrum for unlicensed use, and to do it before November's presidential election. Page, who spoke at a Capitol Hill event Wednesday, blasted incumbent broadcasters for lobbying "against the public interest" to block access to the unlicensed spectrum. Calling claims of potential interference with existing broadcast stations "garbage" and "despicable," Page charged that FCC field tests this summer had been "rigged" against spectrum-sensing technology that's designed to enable exploitation of white space." - Chris White via Bookmarklet

So it starts a timer when it senses motion, and then stops the timer when it senses motion has ceased? Originally I read this as predicting how long it would take to fall, which involves some physics. - Chris White
Totally awesome. - David Sifry via twhirl
BTW, won't that also tell you how high you threw the phone, assuming you're throwing it straight up... - David Sifry via twhirl
David, if the accelerometer is sensitive enough to detect the change in direction of motion at the top of the throw. - Chris White
but when it hits the floor and shatters, how will you get the data?! better call in Geek Squad. - MG Siegler
At Danger, engineers were constantly taking phones and purposely dropping / throwing them on the floor to see if they would break. - Chris White
@Chris, I think accelerometers measure acceleration, and there's no change in acceleration at the top of the throw. (Then again, I made it to class exactly once during three quarters of physics in college.) - Jim Norris
Jim, not being a physics wizard myself, I would think that deceleration would occur on the way up until the top of the throw, so you could detect the change from negative to positive acceleration as it transitioned to coming down. - Chris White
A must app. Even though that it is crazy…funny *smile*. - ivanandersson
Of course there is acceleration during the throw... constant acceleration. - Mario Romero
Yup, I was wrong. Jim and Mario are right (as is @nor, although technically there is acceleration, even though I'm sure he meant "change of acceleration"): http://answers.google.com/answ... - Chris White

From Mr. Conservative George Will: "I suppose the McCain campaign's hope is that when there's a big crisis, people will go for age and experience," George Will said. "The question is who in this crisis looked more presidential, calm and unflustered. It wasn't John McCain, who, as usual, substituting vehemence for coherence said let's fire somebody and picked one of the most experienced and conservative people in the administration." - cjmart
Idle Unfounded Speculation: many conservatives are cutting their losses and torpedoing the McCain campaign because he was never their guy. And, while Obama will win the Presidency, they're betting he cannot handle it...or betting that world economic/etc. issues will conspire to make it unhandle-able. Meanwhile, they dig their heels in to fuck with the Obama presidency over the next four years while they prepare to get a true-red conservative to the top of the ticket in 2012. - Chester
It will be hard for Obama, after four years of Democratic rule of the Presidency and Congress, to come back after four ugly years and say "re-elect me because I've done such a wonderful job." I think Obama isn't very concerned about that, though. There are two things he loves to do: make speeches and make money. Being an exPresident will help both immensely. - Charles LePage
Yes, because the Democrats in power for the last two years have done wonders. - Spencer Scott

It's hilarious for people to try to contrast Obama with McCain by making Obama sound like the greedy one. :) As far as I know Obama didn't leave his first wife to marry a fabulously wealthy (and more attractive) one. Obama knows how many houses he owns and he owns one car. I'm sorry, but you don't get to say Obama is the greedy one after the money... - Tad - the Meme Maker

Republicans talking about voter fraud is HILARIOUS! How about the Voter Caging going on in Michigan where the Republicans are challenging voter registrations for every name that shows up on a foreclosure list. @Jason: +1. I was going to reply that way but didn't have time to dig up a specific instance. - AJ Kohn
The fake conservatives here (Soulhuntre, Charles LePage, Scott Spencer) can't deal with the words of a real conservative, George Will: "The question is who in this crisis looked more presidential, calm and unflustered. It wasn't John McCain, who, as usual, substituting vehemence for coherence said let's fire somebody and picked one of the most experienced and conservative people in the administration." What -- no response? - Sean McBride
"substituting vehemence for coherence" -- in four words, George Will managed to sum up everything that is wrong and anti-conservative about John McCain. He's like George W. Bush, but worse. Four more years of Bush-style governance, and the United States will be permanently ruined. - Sean McBride
my "big" view, he could be just what america needs, to create a few more years of chaos, enough so that americans can look into the mirror and see someone who might finally do something to change the way they live, think, act ... if he wins, that is the reason from my pov, america needs him. just like they needed george to get to the point where they start to think about what is important. - Gregory Lent
If by "what is important" you mean "moving to Brasil" then yes. - Jason Carreira
:-) jason there are so many things that need attention for usa to move in sync with the 21st century reality .. habits of consumption, education, economics, competition ... i am sure you can add to this list ... and still we want news of brittney and more comfort ... moving to brazil is a good idea just to learn some useful things applicable anywhere ... - Gregory Lent
@Gregory: Agree regarding consumption, eduction, competition, personal responsibility etc. It's why I'm against the bailout. Would prefer *that* collapse to the harmful isolation and nationalism that might exist under McCain. - AJ Kohn
we have the habit of valuing short term gain, vs. long term gain ... managing a company for the next quarter's stock results is simply foolish, as example ... - Gregory Lent
@Gregory: Completely agree. - AJ Kohn
I would characterize this discussion less as "tears into" and more as "has a measured conversation about the shortcomings of" -- the kind of rational discourse that is all too lacking on the scream-a-minute cable news channels these days. Just read http://www.taxpolicycenter.org.... McCain's economic policies look worse than Obama's in almost every way: taxes favor the rich (as shown in the graphs above), less people get health care, and the government would have much more debt. - Evan Parker
The two chartjunk tables are among the clearest infographics I've ever seen published on political matters. Great stuff. - Paul Haahr
Given that "trickle-down economics" lays things out in a very bare way, I wonder how persuasive such analysis has. It would seem that, for much of the G.O.P. constituency: 1) non-pocketbook issues trump pocketbook ones, or 2) short-term pocketbook self-interest is trumped by long-term pocketbook aspirations. Well, anyway...that Freakonomics post nicely illustrates how presentation is so important when it comes to quantitative data...for those who care about accurate analysis of data...or data in general. - Chester
Obama's plan does not reduce marginal tax rates so it's basically a give back on tax revenues, not even a cut. And for the 40% who pay no Federal income tax it's 'refundable', something for nothing, i.e. welfare. A more accurate description of Obama's plan is shell game. - Peter Simard

Except for the fact that I'm pretty sure that would turn up very little money. I'm not buying the "250k doesn't make you rich in NYC" argument, either. Yeah, boo hoo, poor struggling Manhattanites making 250k. - ⓞnor
I buy the $250k doesn't make you rich in NYC. What is rich? Just look at NYC real estate prices. That might get you a condo near Harlem. But I also don't trust any of these billionaires that advocate taxes. I mean, they're already rich, right? I bet they would be pissed off at a wealth tax though. - Chris White
But also, this is a great way to incent people to create or work at startups and forgo salary in lui of possible upside. Knowing that the government would come and take a lot of the unlikely profits I got from working my ass off gives me the warm and fuzzies. I think many startup company founders and employees actually earn their money. Just not Mark Cuban, who apparently just "found" his money. - Chris White
Chris, I lived in Manhattan, on the upper west side, for several years on far less than $250k a year. People who can't make ends meet on $250k, even in New York, even with kids, have inflated notions of what a reasonable lifestyle is. Worst case, you just move a twitch outside Manhattan (seriously, those bridges and tunnels won't kill you) and raise your family there. In any case, Manhattan is so exceptional that it's ridiculous to even discuss for the purpose of setting nationwide tax policy. - ⓞnor
@nor, I believe you. I just don't like the inflation of the term "rich." - Chris White
I mean, the moment someone starts telling me that people making $250k aren't rich because of blah blah blah have just bucketed themselves into the category of people so hopelessly and bizarrely out of touch that I can't take anything they say very seriously. - ⓞnor
Well, $250k isn't rich. That's the reality. Look at the historical salaries. It's upper middle class. In CA, that gives you $137k per year after taxes. Most of the nice houses cost more than $2million. You can't even get a mortgage for that here, and that's in the middle range of nice. - Chris White
I guess we're quibbling about the definition of "rich" and "upper middle class". I think of "rich" as someone who has more money than can meet any reasonable material need, and who is in the domain of being able to spend money on (what I think of as) unreasonable luxury, or on ventures that go way beyond providing for their own person and immediate family. And I think you have a different definition of "nice house" than many people would, and possibly also a very Bay Area view of California. - ⓞnor
Could be. I think of rich as someone who can have a nice house, in a nice neighborhood, pay for their children's child care and education, buy all the material things they want, like fancy cars, and vacations, and retire early. It's not a moral thing....just a metric. But remember, we are talking about the term "rich" here, which means someone who has more money than most people, right? And as for being Bay Area centric, shouldn't cost of living mean something as it does in Manhattan? - Chris White
Put another way, earning $250k means your household is in the top 1.5% of American households, and fully *five times* the median household income. How can someone five times wealthier than the average - someone who could fund four other families, and still live the average lifestyle - not be considered rich? We must be speaking entirely different languages. - ⓞnor
Maybe, until you start looking for real estate. Many of the people at Google and Apple are rich. Most other people in the valley earning $250k are not. You are saying the people that are living in high cost of living areas move to the interior of the country so they can proclaim their richness? Are you saying that almost every household in Palo Alto is rich? - Chris White
But what is the median income in China? They should move there. - Paul Buchheit
I don't think Mark Cuban is particularly useful to discussing tax rates. After he donates 20% of his net worth to the national debt I'll start listening to him. I also think we should make Bush and Cheney pay for the Iraq war, since they were wrong about the reasons for doing it. That should raise some money. - Chris White
Chris, do any of the politicians that actually write the policy donate their net worth to the national debt? - Eric Schoonover
taxing earnings vs. taxing wealth. by reducing taxes on dividends and other forms of wealth we've created an ever-widening gap between those who work for their money and those who do not. eventually this leads to a sizable working class that can no longer afford to drive the economy forward. it's what we are seeing now. correcting it is gonna hurt. a lot. - MikeAmundsen
I agree with Mike's sentiment. It will only get worse over time since now tax payers have just been burdened by the bailout of Fannie May and Freddie Mac. - imabonehead
I think the problems in the economy are caused by the spending, not the lack of taxes. And I'm referring to the republicans. We had the a war funded on a huge credit card, and it wasn't even a war we needed to fight. I say we should just tax all the people who voted for Bush. - Chris White
@Chris: true, wars are traditionally inflationary. but the war is not responsible for the borrowing mess we have now. and the war is not the reason the current admin created a gigantic redistribution of wealth through the 2001 tax cuts. imo, a bigger spending problem is looming in soc-sec and health care. congress has failed to fix this several times. another thing that's gonna really hurt. - MikeAmundsen
Well, I'm not a Democrat, I'm a Libertarian. I'm not a fan of national health care, although I do believe in social security.. i think the tax cuts were necessary to keep the economy from going into a depression. I know it's an unpopular position. But the deregulation of the banking industry and commodities industry trading, as well as the practices that drove the real estate bubble are the current adminstration's fault. It's too bad the people who will pay for it aren't the people who caused it. - Chris White
@Chris: i hear ya. whether you believe the gov't should be paying for the health of it citizens is not as important as recognizing that the bill *must* be paid. if citizens can't afford it and biz or gov't won't pay it we're all screwed. i would offer that the 2001 tax cuts did not prevent a downturn, just put it off (until now). and that was the aim (and result) of the mortgage/credit easing, too. and, from my reading of history, those who cause the problems almost never pay up. - MikeAmundsen
Also, it's funny that no one is complaining about the lowering of interest rates. If you are on a fixed income, you have lost more than half of your income in just 9 months. Where are those people suppose to get their income? The stock market? It's lost 20% in 9 months. I would think the retired folks would be getting pretty pissed off by now. - Chris White
@Chris: i can tell you lots of folks are complaining about interest rates. my father-in-law rails every time i see him. not only has his retirement portfolio dwindled over the last few years, the huge corporation to which he devoted 30+ years just informed him that they are cutting his ... wait for it... health benefits! - MikeAmundsen
Mike, respectfully, I don't think the tax cuts caused the problems we have now. I think it was mostly the real estate / mortgage market bubble that is causing the financial crisis as the foreclosures and de-leveraging occur. - Chris White
It's hard for me to consider a household in Manhattan that makes only $250k/year "rich". Almost anywhere else in America a household bringing in 250k probably has a garage-full of cars. A Manhattan family making that much certainly doesn't have a garage, and probably can't afford a car. Unless they drive for a living, they probably don't even have a driver's license. - Gabe
@Gabe: agreed. that's why U.S. tax policy tries to distinguish wages/earnings from taxable income. if nyc folks have $250k in taxable income _after_ deductions, that's some *hefty* wages/earnings. and it's always taxable income that the politicians target. even if the media looses sight of that. - MikeAmundsen
Mike, that confuses me. Are you saying Manhattan residents get a large deduction from living in Manhattan? What is the difference between wages/earnings and taxable income in Manhattan? - Chris White
@Chris: yeah - tax cuts have been popular since the 80s. i'm not convinced that we can spend our way out of recession. the reagan cuts fell over during the first bush admin. clinton started the de-reg of banks and that, along w/ the war, etc. is falling over now. it works for a while - years for sure, but always comes back on us. - MikeAmundsen
The goal of the federal government should be to raise the largest amount of taxes possible. This doesn't mean the largest tax rate. It's an economic equation, and I'll leave it to the experts to figure out what it should be. But the larger the GDP, usually the larger the tax revenue. Taxing more can cause less revenue. - Chris White
@chris: owning and maintaining a home/apartment in manhattan can result in a expenses (mortgage, repairs, etc.) much larger than a home in chicago, cincinnati, or billings. same goes for medical, child care and other deductible exp. this will affect the resulting taxable income. lots to consider (fica max outs, etc.) but folks in manhattan could easily have less taxable income than folks in iowa who have a small wage/earning report. - MikeAmundsen
Mike, I think you are minimizing the cost of real estate in expensive areas. The tax deductions don't come close to the cost. How much mortgage would you "write off" in Manhattan? The $750k jumbo loan? With your 20% down that would get you a $900k place. Don't go outside after dark though. - Chris White
@Chris: "taxing more can cause less revenue" is not borne out in data i read [http://bit.ly/GVTFX]. - MikeAmundsen
Mike, yes I've heard those arguments. Along with the "real estate never goes down" and "investment in the stock market is a sure bet over the long run." Unfortunately real estate does go down, and we only live for a short time. I'm guessing Obama will not raise taxes as much as he has proposed given the current climate. Although I will be voting for him regardless, if he raises capital gains taxes, it will just make the economic situation worse in the medium term. Is there a better reason to cash out now? - Chris White
@Chirs: actually, i think we're in agreement on tax deductions. they don't cover costs in any location. imo, it's not about the size of the mortgage, but it's relative size to your wages/earnings. do you assert that the relative living expenses in manhattan are the same in cincinnati [http://bit.ly/3DGx9a]? i assert that cost of living makes a difference and that's why common talk about raising taxed on those 'earning' $250K is misleading. - MikeAmundsen
Mike, I don't know what cost of living means. It's kind of like the inflation index. If the price of toothpaste goes up by 4 cents, or it costs more in a different city, I don't think it matters. But if a 4 bedroom house with a yard near good schools costs $400k in one city and $4,000,000 in another, I consider that an increase in cost of living. So maybe we can agree that $250k is not the same throughout the nation. - Chris White
