"Essentially, all models are wrong, but some are useful. Empirical Model-Building and Response Surfaces (1987), co-authored with Norman R. Draper, p. 424, ISBN 0471810339 Variants: Remember that all models are wrong; the practical question is how wrong do they have to be to not be useful. Empirical Model-Building by Box and Draper, p. 74 ALL MODELS ARE WRONG BUT SOME ARE USEFUL Section heading, page 2 of Box's paper, "Robustness in the Strategy of Scientific Model Building" (May 1979) in Robustness in Statistics: Proceedings of a Workshop (1979) edited by RL Launer and GN Wilkinson - Christopher Allen
"When it comes to finding information on internet, one has to go through hundreds of web pages. Also, one has to go through the entire page to absorb its content. Isn't this paradoxical in this world of short attention span? CruxLight simplifies this process by automatically summarizing the article and highlighting summary on page. It also gives you the important keywords around which the whole article revolves. - Christopher Allen
Programmer Interrupted -
"I’m writing this post in an apt state: low-sleep, busy, disorientated, and interrupted. I try all the remedies: Pomodoro, working in coffee shops, headphones, and avoiding work until being distraction free in the late night. But it is only so long before interruption finds a way to pierce my protective bubble. Like you, I am programmer, interrupted. Unfortunately, our understanding of interruption and remedies for them are not too far from homeopathic cures and bloodletting leeches. But what is the evidence and what can we do about it? Every few months I still see programmers who are asked to not use headphones during work hours or are interrupted by meetings too frequently but have little defense against these claims. I also fear our declining ability to handle these mental workloads and interruptions as we age. The costs of interruptions have been studied in office environments. An interrupted task is estimated to take twice as long and contain twice as many errors as uninterr... - Christopher Allen
The Rise of Indie Capitalism - Businessweek -
"My students want to be entrepreneurs. They want to be Kickstarter, kickass entrepreneurs. These students want to belong to what I call Indie Capitalism. I use the term Indie deliberately to reflect a new economy that shares many of the distributive and social structures of the independent music scene—and the value system as well. Indie bands are hyperlocal, and Indie Capitalism is a post-global, local economic phenom (think 3D printing, locavore eating, and crowdfunding new products). Indie capitalists are über-urban, too, feeding off the cultural/entrepreneurial energy of cities—New York, Portland, Chicago, Detroit, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Austin. And they are, of course, super-participative. Indie Capitalists believe in our making of all things, with no clear boundaries between consumer and producer, investor and shopper. We are all of them." - Christopher Allen
"This manual gathers together the key insights into API design that were discovered through many years of software development on the Qt appli- cation development framework at Trolltech (now part of Nokia). When designing and implementing a library, you should also keep other factors in mind, such as efficiency and ease of implementation, in addition to pure API considerations. And although the focus is on public APIs, there is no harm in applying the principles described here when writing application code or internal library code. - Christopher Allen -

[CG Textures] - Textures for 3D, graphic design and Photoshop! -
CGTextures strives to be the world's best texture site. Being a 3D artist myself, I know how difficult it is to create textures without good photo materials. Making textures should be about creativity--not about frustrating hours looking for images on the Internet. By supplying good-quality textures in an organized manner, I hope your everyday work will be easier and more enjoyable. Many thanks go out to the people who have contributed textures to this site. If you have stumbled upon this site and are wondering who may need these odd pictures of brick walls and other materials, take a look in the user gallery. You will discover the many way these textures are used for. - Christopher Allen

The analogy here is rather stark, and often has been true for me. But I'd prefer a less binary choice — maybe a better comparison might be I'd rather be a pack than a herd. - Christopher Allen

I had not heard this story before. I did see LeVar Burton last year and he said it was Nichelle Noichols that inspired him to not only to be an actor and take roles like in Roots but also take the role of Geordi La Forge in ST:tng so that he could continue her inspiration to new generations.
