This is clearly not my cat. If this was my cat he's have one arm shoved down into the printer trying to tear up all the internal whirling bits with his bare claws.

@Kol .. :] that, partially, might have been the purpose.... I don't know it exactly either. :] .. was I reflecting on a cat under the fax, and that it is hard to fax that way ... /?:] ... "underfaxing at its worst" ..

there ya have me ! :] .... see, to be honest with you, i saw this pic couple days ago, but i let it go, without posting it ..... what does that make me? :]

even a flat cat... faxes just can't handle the hair. You'd have to shave the cat first, else the hair will burn and stick to the drum... a mess! (I am extrapolating from transparencies, mind, i don't have access to a cat to test)

In my case it was just eating, nuts, popcorn, I like to chew my food and fillings aren't as tough as real teeth it seems, which is a fantastic reason to take care of them. I hope you're feeling by now :)

Yeah, they seem OK now. There was one tooth that was almost impossible to fill, since it was in such bad shape (they struggled to fit a metal band around it, several times), but they managed it eventually. It's not as if I don't take care of them, either. Such is life...

How does a ballerina stand like this ?
- گل باقالی
The toe box of a pointe shoe is constructed out of stiffened canvas before it's wrapped in satin. Ballerinas wrap their toes (I used wool, some use synthetic pads) for a bit of protection, and from there it's a lot of foot and ankle strength (not to mention some pain).

“Try your hand at closing California’s budget shortfall, estimated at $24 billion. It’s not easy, but it can be done. Cut spending, raise taxes and/or borrow to get the state out of the red. For each choice -- drawn from proposals from across the political spectrum -- we’ve tried to give some sense of the effects. As you craft your proposal, the Deficit Meter will show your progress.”
- Anthony Citrano
Holy crap...I tried it...raising taxes only gets you about halfway there and then you have to make some pretty painful cuts to get the rest of the way there. California is truly screwed.
- Alex Scoble
I got them into the green but it took some doing. Interesting that "legalize marijuana and tax at 10%" wasn't an option as a revenue stream. I wonder how quickly the scenario would change if it were.

My only option is to move to florida
- Tony C
from fftogo
@Tina - it is an option (Assembly Bill 390) but not within the current emergency session. @Alex: Yes, but it ain't just California. The state continues to serve as an essential US leading indicator. ;)
- Anthony Citrano
Wow, that is amazing to see. I didn't even manage to get it half way down. My mom is in human services and as a recent college grad with no insurance it was hard to cut anything from education, human services, health or state workers. Poor Cali. :(
- Heather
@Earl: Florida, New York, and Michigan are close on California's heels. Try maybe Hawaii instead.

Another 6 months of Obama, and the U.S. will be like California.

That's an awesome visualization. California is pretty fucked.
- Eric P
I fixed it, but I raised the hell out of some taxes to do it.
- Steve Lowe
If you cut everything but the one-time fixes, and don't raise taxes, you are still in the red. California is boned. Can we sell it to Japan? China?
- Andy Dustman
@Andy, Heather, Eric - as I said to Alex: this isn't unique to CA; it's coming soon to a State House near you.
- Anthony Citrano
Yeah, but not to the extent that CA is facing...unless the economy gets worse. :)
- Alex Scoble
@Alex - that depends on whether you measure "extent" in percentages or absolutes. In absolutes, of course none are to the extent of CA because it's the largest state economy. But in percentage terms, most state budgets are similarly fucked over the next fiscal session - two if they're lucky.
- Anthony Citrano
I disagree. California is uniquely fucked up because of its constitution and system of ballot referendums (prop 13). Other states are able to adjust and respond more effectively as they go along - obviously they haven't stayed deficit free, but the situation isn't *as* dire elsewhere.
- Eric P
It's important to keep in mind that this is a static tool for what is an inherently dynamic problem. You can raise taxes, sure, but you'll also lose an extraordinary amount of revenue in subsequent years as families relocate. And if you think that won't happen, keep in mind that Cali is already hemorrhaging high-earners. Cali's problem is a spending problem, just as the rest of the...

Wow, this is a great visual representation. Totally depressing.
- joey
@Eric P: yes, California has unique challenges. But what I meant was that the core problem - i.e. the state being totally bankrupt - is not unique. Many US states will be right behind it.
- Anthony Citrano
In MO, we had a GOP Gov. who made draconian cuts to balance the budget. It made him unpopular and he only served one term; but we are stable fiscally now.
- Robert Hafer
from iPhone
@Anthony - but not too many other states have an economy roughly the size of France's. A good comparison here is Texas, which is also very large, very diverse, and is in comparatively sterling fiscal shape.
- Forrest Cox
Just legalize our states #1 Cash crop, and the tax revenues from it should go a long way to shoring up the budget permanently. Then repeat for every other state and things might actually start to get better! Imagine that!
- Michael Fidler
The budget "options" are too old. Due to a failure to act before July 1 - some options are no longer available.

I didn't see an option to cut the salaries of the governor and legislators to minimum wage level.
- John (a.k.a. dendroica)
No new taxes? Select the "possibly illegal" cuts and give voters next election a choice: keep more of your earnings and invest in your own futures, or give it all to us and trust us to rain those benefits sufficiently back to you. Do you really have confidence CA can do that efficiently?
- Andrew Skretvedt
After experimenting and looking at the list, any change of less than a billion dollars is barely worth making. Fixing this is going to be painful, but this is what you get for continuously demanding services, at some point they need to be paid for. The "cut the health and dental care for state retirees maybe be illegal and will be challenged in court" is kind weird: if the state goes bankrupt, those won't be paid out anyway. But I guess everyone gets to feel good about not having to cut that.
- Andy Bakun
I also don't get why we're spending money on some of these things. Why are we keeping illegal immigrants in state prisons? Why have they not been deported? Wouldn't deporting them as soon as possible actually be cheaper in the long run?
- Andy Bakun
That wasn't too hard. I made 14bn in cuts and 16bn in new taxes, giving me a budget surplus of 6.8bn which I will bank for the next two years as the tax base shrinks even more. I gutted law enforcement (over porked as it is), cut hard across community college level (sorry kids, suck it up for a bit and read on your own) but left k-14 intact as well as ALL health and human services.
- Cole Jolley
It's amazing how may state funded freeloaders there are in Ca.

Maybe I didn't see the option, but I wanted to release all non-violent drug offenders, and others incarcerated for victimless crimes. That should've been worth something.

This is a wonderful application. It's very easy to armchair quarterback things like budgets. It's good to be able to see options laid out in an interactive fashion like this. Should do it more often, particularly before elections.
- Barry Biddlecomb
from twhirl
My one gripe about the application: It only shows the *deficit*, not the entire budget, and cuts that have been proposed by politicians. This is around $130B if federal funds aren't counted, $200B with federal funds. http://www.dof.ca.gov/budgeti...
- Andy Dustman
Gawd...this is hard to do without cutting much needed programs (I think anyway.)
- Adam C.
California is setting an early example for a wholesale rethink sorely needed in the United States. That is: what should government really be responsible for? As many of you have said, this is an example of free-riding entitlement gone amok. And if you all think this is bad, just wait until we have to take the same approach to the federal budget....
- Anthony Citrano
The thing is, paying more isn't even an option, since the Governator will terminate any bill that tries to raise taxes. Although I wonder how long that stance is going to last.
- Victor Ganata

Micro-blogging is good for idealets and infotainment, but it really is turning the web into a mindless medium like TV. Of course, there will always be the equivalent of PBS trying valiantly to raise the bar somewhat. Blogs will always have the possibility of transmitting real knowledge.
- Paul W. Homer
The interesting thing for me is I think we have lost the definition of what a blog is. Everybody jumped up and down about what Steve Rubel did, but really I see his change as a shift of platform. If he posted that same content on wordpress, nobody would have said a word. Just because he did it on posterous and called it a lifestream, people took issue with it. So, what is our definition then?
- Robert
Dave - I read through the link you sent, thanks for the information. So, in what ways do you think posterous goes against this definition?
- Robert
from email
I think Steve still has a weblog, he's just submitting posts to it in a "different" way. Like Dave's link says a weblog is "... a hierarchy of text, images, media objects and data, arranged chronologically, that can be viewed in an HTML browser." Pretty much sums it up, I think. Steve's post is going to generate attention, and debate, but in the end it's a weblog.
- Rob Fahrni
Robert, I know you're asking Dave a question, but I don't think the Posterious way goes against the definition. If I'm not mistaken Radio could post via e-mail, and I know Blogger supports this feature. Maybe I need to dig into Posterious a bit more but isn't that what it does?
- Rob Fahrni
Rob - That is my point. This in my mind is one of the major problems with looking for a "new name" for these social products. We see it as something different because it is called something different. Posterous, from what I can see so far, allows for the writer to interact with their "weblog" in a different way, just as you said...
- Robert
from email
Dave - I think your "huh?" was towards me... We call Posterous a "life stream", I say it is a blog, that we have given a different name to. That is what I am saying.Rob - I agree with you 100%, and that is my point exactly. I keep reading these post about blogging being dead, or blogging being alive... but those that say they are not "blogging" are still "blogging" Maybe I am not making sense, but I hope I am...
- Robert
from email
Robert - Precisely! I think Posterious is trying to find a why to differentiate their product, so they've coined a new phrase. It's still a weblog, how the data arrives may be different, but it's just a weblog all the same. When I read Steve's story last night, from his new site, I thought I was going to find a link on it to something "new and innovative", then I realized I was AT the actualy site, his "life stream."
- Rob Fahrni
Rob - YES... That is what I am saying... Same with Tumblr in my view, it is a weblog... Blogging is not dead at all in my view...

This subject keeps coming back - blogging will never die.

Before Web 1.0 we listened, conversed, collaborated and then we wrote. Writing was the synthesis of all the thinking that occurred in the first steps. In the new medium, the thinking process is the streams, both personal and community. Blogging is the synthesis of this new kind of community thought process.

Of course bloggin won't die, but you better have compelling content, because people have little tolerance for long articles.

I think a large percentage of bloggers were really microbloggers, they just didn't have the correct apps to do that. The people that actually have something to say will keep blogging and those that just like to say something small or share something interesting will continue microblogging, or lifestreaming, or whatever variant you want to name it. Blogging is akin to publishing articles...

Who really quit blogging? Even the most active lifestream addicts never really quit. For me, the blog is and has always been home. Everything else is somewhat ancillary, even when it's the first place I go. Critical thinking sometimes requires the depth of a written post.
- Ken Camp
Question: Of those of you out there who use posterous, do you use it as a replacement of your blog, a mirror of your blog or something different?
- Curt Mercadante
One of the things I like about blogging is the ability to not finish a thought, not to try so hard to say all I have to say or say come to any definite conclusion in a single post. The unfinished thought is what encourages conversation. Let someone else add to your thought. Let others challenge your incomplete premise. I don't know everything, why pretend I do? My thoughts are never finished.
- Jack (a.k.a. Jeber)
Wow, you're right Dave, scripting news was indeed VERY much a microblog. Interesting & thanks for pointing that out!

Just because you can finish a thought, doesn't mean people will read it.

Just as your diary became your journal and then your log, your log has become your stream. The web has become your life..... AND SO IT WAS, that in the year naught-nine, the web-log was renamed to life-stream, dissected, and it's pieces scattered about the hundreds of "cloud" services, from which it could fall as raindrops of thought, pinging here and there in an attempt to spread ideas to where they were needed the most.
- Joel Bennett

Blogging is still the platform of choice for sharing a clear/uninterrupted flow of thoughts from a single perspective. Then comments rapidly add value to the original post's material (most of the time). We're witnessing the link power of blogging decline because that functionality (which is monetizable) is moving to social media. We are left with the question, how best should bloggers monetize if they're losing link passing strength? I'm working that issue now by frankensteining several parts together
- Mark Essel
Personalized/Customized ads based on public user status. Semantic tools (via API), memory (local user profile database), and the passing of information to an ad aggregator will help produce custom (dynamic web matched) advertisements. It should serve all parties involved (social media, bloggers/front ends, semantic processing houses, and advertising aggregators).
- Mark Essel
What do you mean, I have always been able to finish a ... ooh a nice shiny object...

Isn't it ironic that this post contained a clear and concise thesis, in under 140 characters?
- Mike Chelen
There's NOTHING wrong with brevity. There is a time and a place for discussion and lengthy discourse.
- Will Higgins™
Mike Chelen - "a pretense of ignorance and of willingness to learn from another assumed in order to make the other's false conceptions conspicuous by adroit questioning ... the use of words to express something other than and especially the opposite of the literal meaning." - Nope, not ironic
- Matthew DeVries
Matthew DeVries: that covers definitions 1 and 2, yet the 3rd is an "incongruity between the actual result of a sequence of events and the normal or expected result," where in this case the expected result was to explain how new platforms prevent thoughts from being finished, and the actual result was to the contrary :D
- Mike Chelen
If you say so. I never saw that definition, but I have no reason to doubt you, or motivation to find the source myself, so, I'll allow it.

"Marsh Fork Elementary—and the rest of Appalachia—are still being threatened by mountaintop-removal coal mining. Can new legislation finally stop this devastating practice? I’m haunted by this photo. It’s of a school—Marsh Fork Elementary in Sundial, West Virginia—precariously set about 400 feet downhill from a massive 2.8-billion-gallon pool of toxic coal sludge. The image, annotated and uploaded by the advocacy group Appalachian Voices, has been boiling my blood since I first saw it a couple years back. About 200 students spend their schooldays there. It’s a disaster waiting to happen. Massey Energy’s slurry pond is held in place in the hollow above the school by a leaky dam. These dams don’t have the best track record. One Massey dam failed in 2000, dumping 300 million gallons of sludge into streams in Martin County, Kentucky. I guess I joined FriendFeed a little too early to see this screen. What the hell is this? These are popular FriendFeed users? Evan Williams is a popular FriendFeed user? Barack Obama? Do these people even *use* FriendFeed? What about uh, I dunno - Rahsheen, Mona, RAPatton, Shevonne, Rochelle... you know, popular FF users who actually USE FF! Come on FF staff - please reward the people who actually engage on the service! This screen is simply a popularity measure to make FF look more appealing to outsiders and will cause them to follow people who aren't *really* involved.
- Tamar Weinberg
from Bookmarklet
Tamar, that page reflects the "most subscribed" accounts. It's not hand-selected by FriendFeed, and doesn't indicate how much people are liked or disliked. The reason that folks like Pete Cashmore, Obama and Ev are so high here is because 1) Twitter put them in the suggested user list, and 2) FriendFeed enabled you to sync your followers with Twitter. Tada! I would argue that many there earned their position organically, however.
- Louis Gray
Fair enough. Time to make a change, I think. It's only fair to reward real *FriendFeed* (and not Twitter) active users.

- anna sauce
Yeah. :/ It's sad when people join FF, follow those people on that list, and then get frustrated because of what they're seeing (or not seeing). A lot of them quit FF thinking that it's not nearly as cool as they had heard or hoped.
- Rochelle
Yes the list has some weird people on it, together with some really good FFers. But if they start making up the list on some subjective criteria like "whos a good friendfeeder" won't we end up at the same place as the SUL? I'm weird, I like to slowly build up my stream so I know who I follow and why. That way I get alot of value out of this place, while being gently eased into it. Starting to feel a little bit like the cooked frog though :-P
- Rasmus Lauridsen
FFholic has a list of the "most active". I think that list is a lot better than the FFholic "most popular" list, which is very similar to the suggested list provided by FF.
- Rochelle
Rochelle, in theory the most popular on FFHolic should match the suggested list by FF. But FFHolic's data is not perfect. Keep in mind I am not saying this is the right approach, but I understand how it works, and it's better than Twitter's nonsense. And you all know I highlight 10 new folks every month who are awesome and off this list.
- Louis Gray
Louis, and thank you for that! I think your list needs more publicity. I try to link to it when I see a new FFer posting about who to follow.
- Rochelle
Louis - Your earlier recommendations were particularly useful :) Amazing how this comes full circle almost a year later. Great catch Tamar

lovely - nothing like yet another list of mostly users who don't even use ff. i smell a cn post coming.

Maybe a system containing activity and popularity. Activity isn't all either. There is also quality of output, not to mention interest. There are alot of popular people I don't follow, not because they suck, but because what they talk about is not what I want to read about. Suggesting users in any service like this is a quagmire of hurt feelings, envy, suspicions, gossip and other parts of human nature that aren't really too pretty to look at.
- Rasmus Lauridsen
Rasmus, how would you determine popularity?
- Rochelle
I think I got sidetracked by my flighty little mind... I should have removed the first part before posting... I evolved during the writing... Need an editor here :-P Popularity has to play a part of the metric, popularity (followers, we be sheep after all), activity, interests/topics. The more I think about it the more I hate the idea of a list, because it will lead to the quagmire of doom.

I don't think they should take anyone off the suggested user list(or whatever it's called), but it's about time they add some new people to it.

I don't know much about programming, but I think trying to mathematically trying to determine interests/topic and then sort out who is most popular would be pretty much impossible.

Michael, all of that data is on FFholic. :) Perhaps FF needs to take a hint from Arda Kutsal, the FFholic guy.

how much has changed since my first exposed ff defaults post on 7/6/08 - http://www.centernetworks.com/friendf... - it's great to see justine and barack up there - two people who really participate here.
- Allen Stern
Or, better yet, FF could identify all users who are active within the past few days and/or have above a certain number of likes/comments and then ROTATE those users through a suggested users list. Each refresh gives new faces. Then newbies will see different people they can follow and many of us will get a chance to be featured.
- Rochelle
Rochelle, I totally agree. Maybe everyone that's not active for a year or more, should be moved onto a founder's "honorary" list.
- Michael Fidler
Great conversation and I updated the post to link to this discussion. Thanks for all the input. BTW, if you want an easy way to see all of Louis' "10 people" posts try this search http://friendfeed.com/search...
- Keith - @tsudo
Rochelle, I like that idea very much, let the realtimeness of the place shine through. Could also have a who's active now feature that works realtime. Or a whats going on now with some of the good discussions, based on activity. Then people can pick and choose from the people mixed up in that particular "mob"
- Rasmus Lauridsen
this will be a very important question for friendfeed - do they go the route of twitter or do they try to stay loyal to their fans.
- Allen Stern
Tamar I'm also trying to aggregate the "Best of" links to share with new Friendfeeders here is my list so far http://ff.im/47jWL I'd love to have suggestions from anyone else
- Keith - @tsudo
It may be possible to look at the common words used by FFeeders and construct a list of interests. There is a site already building a list per user. I linked a few days ago after building my word map. Since I'm on the iPhone and not using a machine it isn't easy to flip back and forth. hopefully my memory is right.

The way it is, this list is exactly what it says it is: the most popular. I don't see how limiting the "popular users" list to only people who actually log into FriendFeed (as opposed to those who create an account and simply allow it to collect their tweets or rss feeds) would be any more valid. If you think what sets FF apart is "community" I disagree. However, it would definitely be...

- Joel Bennett
Joel - to me it isn't a question of validity its a question of value. If you add Mashable, iJustine, and Barack Obama you'll gain a ton of posts but no community. Friendfeed's value is content + community and conversation. This list only gives 1/3 of the real value. I'd much rather see a list of active members and I think it would help new users "get the point' of Friendfeed.
- Keith - @tsudo
Allen, this isn't the first time this subject has come up here. I’m guessing, but when the site was redesigned, the subject must have come up internally, but I guess they choose to keep it unchanged.
- Michael Fidler
As I understand it, as soon as you start subscribing to other users, that list changes to one based on those you're subscribed to, not FriendFeed in general.
- Tristan Seligmann
Tristan I think this is correct. However Friendfeed should still reconsider the page since all new users will see these recommendations
- Keith - @tsudo
Two things stand out: (1) new FF users may follow these official recommendations but get disenchanted with the service. That's because users aren't stimulated when FF is simply perceived to be a broadcast medium. By highlighting people who use FF merely to amplify their Twitter feed, you are not getting the community that so many of these people seek.
- Tamar Weinberg
(2) I like Rochelle's idea and I am glad it makes people like Rasmus happy :) Rotate the "popular" list. It gives engaged users the ability to be highlighted repeatedly. Or just reward the biggest contributors by giving them placement on this page. It incentivizes people to be very active, and that's what FF needs, IMO.
- Tamar Weinberg
Hi all, thanks for this spirited discussion and the all great thoughts. This page is something we are definitely working on improving, so we certainly appreciate the feedback!

Got to love having the FF team respond to our discussions and let us know they are listening. One more reason why I love Friendfeed

Tamar et al - THANK YOU for posting this... The FF list is completely useless to new users unless they want to follow celebrities and A Listers, not the people who actually USE and promote FriendFeed. I've been on FF since March 1, 2008, however have only been recognized by FFholic and a few kind bloggers! :D The FF list really should reflect the community, not just cool trendy names
- Susan Beebe
There is absolutely no reason there can not be multiple lists. That way those who want to subscribe to "famous" people can go their way and those who prefer substance to fame can have their own list. Eventually I sincerely hope FriendFeed will consider making the quality content being accumulated here useful for reference. See http://www.growmap.com/twitter... for more on what I mean by that.

- Keith - @tsudo
I've been suggesting this page be changed for ages now. Sure there are some users there that use FF a lot, like Robert but if you are showing off your service to new users the 'most popular' users are perhaps not the best ones to look at for good feeds and good interaction. I'm not saying it should be the most active either but it certainly should take into account the users activity as well as their popularity.
- Kol Tregaskes
If you subscribe to a lot of the most popular users you are only going to get their Twitter stream, which is not a great demostration of FriendFeed features.
- Kol Tregaskes
I suggested to FF directly that the introduction to new users was poor (as I recently tested it and found it confusing). I suggested that there should be a quick tutorial as soon as the registeration process is complete, with guidelines on the basics of how to post, comment and subscribe as well as how and why to update your bio and services.
- Kol Tregaskes
I also suggested that the tutorial include an interactive section which showed the user how to post a new entry, something generic like Title: "Hello, I've just joined FriendFeed", Comment: "This is my first comment, yippee" :-)". We could then use this in a saved search and check it to welcome the new users aboard. At the moment new users are put on the home page with no clue what to do next and no welcome, making them feel lost and ignored.
- Kol Tregaskes
Too bad I was sleeping when you started this thread. Reward the glorious! :D
- Sasha Kovaliov(.com)
And I have to thank Ana for taking the time to read my *very* long email on all this. :-D
- Kol Tregaskes
I like the idea of the most popular, most liked, most commented and most active list but it should be a combo of all these and not separated into 4 lists. 4 lists would just confuse new users. Keep it simple, make the list more intelligent and perhaps randomise it a bit showing 20 of the top 100 users?
- Kol Tregaskes

I've been wanting to ask this for a while, and considering Mike Arrington is a web celeb now - i'll just ask publicly. Why do SOME of you dislike/hate Michael Arrington? It's not a rhetorical question btw - i'm genuinely asking because i've thought hard...and can't think of anything that that he's specifically done.
have some of you had personal bad experiences with him? Is it just that you think he's arrogant. I've personally got no issue with the guy aside from the fact that he's technically competition for TheNextWeb and I think he & his site make techmeme way too often! :)
- Zee.
My personal interactions with Mike have all been good. (E-mail, phone, F2F) His positions no doubt occasionally disagree with mine.
- Louis Gray
Well, I for one do not hate or dislike him. In fact, I think he's brilliant, but he also tends to think out loud (or think while posting, I guess) and therefore comes across as abrasive. He is frequently wrong too, but has real trouble thinking that there may exist other viewpoints besides his own, especially in the midst of a discussion. At times like that he just goes on and on, and eventually just makes a bore of himself.
- Jim in Real Time
@Louis and that's what i seem to hear from most industry professionals who have encountered him...So i'm stil left confused. Is it mainly because at times Techcrunch has broken embargoes and so the majority of haters are PR folk and entrepreneurs? Or is it mainly other competing bloggers? I mean where the heck does some of the hatred come from...
- Zee.
He didn't really pop up on my radar till that thing with Leo Laporte (which apparently was the result of a big misunderstanding?) I was subbed to the TechCrunch account here on ff and thought that a lot of the stuff that popped up was pretty interesting. If anything I "hate" that he's gone...
- J. Abdul-Qahhar
I think he's a savvy guy and he's opinionated. I don't know the guy personally but it seems like he takes things *way* too personal, but perhaps that's what drives him to be great. Lately it seems like he just doesn't want to listen anymore and that's a dangerous place to be for any profession IMO.
- AJ Kohn
@AJ I would normally tend to agree but then again - when someone spits in his face and he receives death threats...surely that's personal no?
- Zee.
My initial personal interaction with MA was when I was at Mashable - given that, it's not surprising that it was particularly negative. He seems to have softened on me as an individual since I've left there.
- Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
1st of all, I don't *actively* dislike him = I don't seek out opportunities to tear him down or flame him. I even empathized with him when he wrote about being publicly spit on and considering restraining orders in the past. Then the Last.fm episode happened. After the dust settled, it was clear that MA had spun whatever actually happened in the most accusatory manner possible. I...

I consider what he pulled on Leo Laporte a personal attack so mark me down in the MA=hate category. He might not have known Leo for a long period of time, however the people that have followed Leo for a long time as I have, know his credibility and integrity are above reproach.

I don't think folks hate him - though many really don't like him. From my viewpoint, he seems opinionated - and somewhat intransigent. Of course, that is true for most insightful people (even in the tech community). In many ways, he reminds me of Dave Winer, Adam Curry and even Robert Scoble. Each of these people have important things to say. Sometimes, the way they say it can alienate people. As for me, I like Mike's self confidence. But it's a fine line to walk.
- Lorin Olsen
@Mark - thanks for sharing, very interesting - and yeah he probably did overreact but i guess you can see why he was pissed off eh

Zee, with respect, what you're doing by starting this very thread is giving people yet another platform to people who would like to say why they dislike MA without knowing him. Apart from Mark (ex-Mashable), who is telling the story from one side obviously, I don't think you'll find a lot of people who are going to tell you why they dislike because of something he said or did to them...

@Robin I know what you're saying...but to be honest, I hope for the opposite. @Zee An apology is all well and good after the fact, It still doesn't change the fact that he was an asshole and if past behavior is anything to judge by he will be again.. Just listen to Laportes reaction, he's pissed not just because of that one event, but because of how Arrington has been for as long as he's known him..
- Paul OFlaherty
I don't hate Mike Arrington or like him either, I don't know him, I can only go by what he writes and what I've seen of him on line. He does like to stir things up, but I not sure if he is always ready for the reaction he gets, when he is not he comes across as self involved. Saying that I certain he would be both fascinating and hair pulling guy to know
- Kim Landwehr
@Paul - yeah i thought the same..but its one person losing it. What i mean is, as much as i like/resppect him, Laporte isn't God - disagreements happen all the time at work and that doesn't make one person bad and the other good. Look, i'm not necessarily standing up for Mike here but I just want to try & put things in perspective. That argument on air is no where near enough for the targeted attacks I've personally seen online directed at him.
- Zee.
Mathew: Arrington has helped MANY people and startups. You are wrong when you say he only hurts people. Absolutely wrong.
- Robert Scoble
@Zee Laporte is by no means god.. LOL He's made his share of cock ups too in the past, but for all that Arrington has done good, he has a habit of rubbing people the wrong way if you know what I mean. He is deliberately abrasive because it brings him attention. When you're that abrasive you become someone that people love to hate.
- Paul OFlaherty
I like Mike. I like Pete at Mashable. I have huge disagreements with how both of them report the news, but that's just my perspective on process journalism. That said, I think it's unfair to judge the guy (Mike) based on what we read online from his media outlet as many of us seem to. Unless you've met the guy in person, it's no use in making an assertion one way or another I feel.
- Brandon Mendelson
Why do I get the feeling that the original question will not get answered in this thread? :) Based on a brief Google search, you can write a whole thesis on why people love/hate Arrington, and how justified it all is.
- Vincent van Wylick
@Brandon - exactly. Deliberately controversial posts are part of what makes Techcrunch a success. It's entertainment, pure and simple. People take it far too seriously.
- Martin Bryant
The problem is that it's not just entertainment. Techcrunch has a lot of voice and what it publishes can make huge waves on and off the internet. Whether such power should be wielded by a single person/editor, I don't know.
- Vincent van Wylick
TechCrunch has more than a dozen employees at this point.
- Robert Scoble
That's true, it's an organisation, which is great. But take today, he compared Friendfeed to a virus like Syphilis. I personally don't mind the comparison, but I'm sure other people will. It's provocative blogging and he's using a powerful platform, Techcrunch, to state a personal opinion. It's the nature of the internet that this is happening and I don't know where it's all going, but many little (potential) needles can make for a sharp object.
- Vincent van Wylick
@Paul - guess what, the Leo thing was a mistake, a misunderstanding. It was cleared up inside an hour by the two people involved on the dispute and it was over. You are barney fife and are not allowed to have an opinion because you were not invovled in the dispute and the people involved were finished with it. Leo said it was done and forgiven, so be done with it and forgive it and quit...

@Matthew DeVires I also suggest that instead of bitching at me for not reading what everybody else wrote in the thread, you go and read the question that started the thread!

@Paul it is material only to people who are dumb enough to believe that incident characterizes either Michael or Leo.
- Robin Wauters
@Robin, I don't believe it does. It was certainly out of character for Leo to explode like that. Again, it was an example of how Arrington rubs people up the wrong way. How being deliberately abrasive make you the person people love to hate, which I believe I said earlier in this thread.
- Paul OFlaherty
i'm not a fan of Arrington. mostly because i find his mean-spirited behavior little more than link-baiting to promote his own self interest. i've watched from a distance (not a subsriber, etc.) and over the years i've seen him grow more and more strident in his posts - a typical pattern for someone on a personal downward spiral. in the last year this mean attitude has folded back on him...

Adrian, There are many reasons why a building like this could fall over. If the foundation of the building was not sound or was sitting on unstable earth. If the structure was inadequately designed, the lower floors could collapse under the load from the upper floors. Luckily the building was under construction and no one was living in it yet. " http://news.my.msn.com/regiona...
- Jeff P. Henderson
Here's more photos: http://zonaeuropa.com/200906c... I see no re bar in the pilings that are sticking out of the bottom of the building. Definitely inadequate if not shoddy construction.
- Jeff P. Henderson
Thank you Jess, for bringing this to the attention of English speakers.
- Dallas Cao
This is why purchasing power parity adjustment of Chinese GDP is such nonsense. Shoddy construction of buildings and infrastructure in China is the norm. While not this bad, typically buildings through out the country will never last as long as a european or north american equivalents.
- Gersham Meharg
That's the secret of the double number of GDP growth for the past years, they built something that didn't last long, soon they rebuild it and then the number were double counted.
- Paul
This is nuts. I almost didn't believe it, but then I found pics from several different angles. This shoddy workmanship in China really needs to stop. It's just getting ludicrous now. Why are so many people there so keen on saving a yuan that they don't care if people get hurt or killed in the process? I know we have similarly unscrupulous businesses in the US, but they seem to take it to a much worse level in China. Perhaps because looser regulations and corruption allows people to get away with things.
- Kamilah Gill
God has been busy blessing America, and then who has time to save our chinese people?
- Paul
Is it my impression or is the 'foundation' completely clean? No stretched/torn steel supports etc?!
- Adrian Scicluna
this is like a nightmare, which I had, come true, ... where Im in a house that starts to shake back & forth and then turns over .. that is where I wake up.
- Dickbuttkick
now u can see how it looks like after you woke up :) i can see that there is a big need of urban housing in china but to risk the lives of many people is just irresponsible. its houses...they are build to stay for some time i guess. they should spend a little more time to make it right
- Chris Hofmann
Wow, I know where that is. Nothing like taking the time to properly scope out a location before building a high-rise on it.
- Darren
Looks like the foundation only went about 6 feet into the ground. Hell, many two-story homes in the US go down that deep. So the fact that this is a 13 story building with such a shallow foundation, it isn't surprising that it just fell over. A stiff breeze could have knocked that building over.
- Jason, Incognito
http://www.shanghaidaily.com/sp... - "They also took samples of concrete and reinforcing steel bars from the collapsed 13-floor building" - so apparently there was some amount of steel in there somewhere...

Would be cool if Friendfeed could convert posts to my chosen language and visa versa. I'd sure like to be able to read and respond to these posts!
- Jeff P. Henderson
FF is so amazing that it collects users' comments from all over the world with different language, so how do you English-speaking guys read Chinese ? I suppose most of Chinese users read English with no difficulty.
- xiawinter
Everybody is welcome to join the group "Say Chinese in FF" if you have interest in Chinese language or information, which has more than 1000 members--http://friendfeed.com/chinese...

I am very curious, the buildings is slowly going down or a sudden fall? If it is the latter, not less likely to break the glass, especially the top floor. ----- 我是很好奇, 那個樓是慢慢倒下去的 還是轟一下子倒下去? 如果是後者, 玻璃不太可能不破的, 尤其是最上面的樓層.

Somebody needs to wake up Robert Scoble to defend Friendfeed ;-)
- arjo
there is a mob/pile on mentality here at times, but it's nowhere near as bad as what i've seen on other "social networking" sites and definitely not in the way of "i'll kill you/go die" type stuff. nowhere near it. i find that people are more supportive of others on ff. a lot of people just instigate and attempt to be controversial in order to pull in comments. a few months later they're the same ones holding press conferences about how they're quitting friendfeed because it brings them no value.
- Cee Bee
These comments may have come directly from FriendFeed but it's ludicrous to entirely place the blame here because the same stuff would have happened on Twitter (or another network) had FriendFeed not been around.
- Aaron Hood
The question is not if "we" the Friendfeed users have a mob mentality but if Friendfeed makes it easier to create a Mob mentality.
- arjo
FriendFeed is nowhere nearly as susceptible to mob mentality compared to Digg and Slashdot, thanks to the fact that most people on here use their real IDs. I've seen vigorous arguments here, but they're tame compared to the firestorms I've seen elsewhere. The blog post sounds like MA's upset that people didn't find his "ribbing" (to put it mildly) of Leo Laporte entertaining and took Leo's side instead of his. He's just upset about that. There's no mob mentality here at all.
- LANjackal
@arjo: LOL it could be, but the fact that most people here use their own names acts as a barrier to that effect
- LANjackal
Wow. Arrington REALLY has it in for FF comparing it to Syphilis. Has he lost it? :D
- Kevin Whalen
So are we to take Arrington serious with such an outlandish comparison? I swear I'm not trying to all "mobbish" on him but what exactly is he thinking other than "Lookit me! I'm an attention whore! Come to my site so I can make money!" <shrug>
- CAJ, somewhere else
It pops up from time to time.. But that seems to be common any where there's anonymous user driven content.
- J. Abdul-Qahhar
I don't think of FF as having a mob mentality so much as a monoculture
- RAPatton
@RAPatton: monoculture? Like how? I've noticed many contrasting viewpoints here ... could you explain what you mean by that?
- LANjackal
I'm sorry, Arrington is the biggest drama queen I've seen on the internet in a long time. He canceled speaking engagements because he felt he was in danger after the backlash from the spat with Leo? Talk about overestimating his own importance in the world. He needs a new place to hang out. Or a bottle. Or something. Whatever stops the QQing.
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
@tinypants: Well I do recall him blogging about taking a break after some random person walked up to him and spat in his face or something ... but I think a lot of what he gets is self-inflicted. Poor behavior has its consequences
- LANjackal

@LANJackal Did you even read the link? MA spends an entire paragraph and links to MG Sieglers post on what I think of as the "Deanonymousation of the mob" I think hes thought long and hard on this subject, and maybe he should have thought on it a bit more. In any community you will find people with pitchfork and torch potential. He just happened to be at the receiving end of a run that...

- Thom Kennon
@Rasmus: Have you ever thought of telling MA to do the same? Advising him to research his facts before he mouths off? Telling him to stop his garbage accusations? He's always starting crap and then complaining when he gets hit in the face for it. You can't behave like he does without consequence. The definition of a balanced, proper online community is not one that tolerates deliberate troublemakers like himself, which is what he wants
- LANjackal
What he's requesting is the permission/ability to firestart with impunity. Sorry, no community anywhere is going to grant him that. Period.
- LANjackal
Well LANjackal, I was on my way over there to post, maybe you should do the same, but maybe wait 5-10 minutes before you, let the wine calm you down a little bit. He is not going to hear you here.. Why don't you go over where he can actually argue back and calmly tell him how you feel?
- Rasmus Lauridsen
@Rasmus: He's on FriendFeed himself, actually. I'm sure he can see all of this if he wants to. In fact he's probably got a saved search of his name running (if he's smart). Should pick up this thread.
- LANjackal
@Rasmus: I'm sorry, I didn't think that calling him a drama queen was name-calling. No, I'm being serious. I apologize, I don't want to become one of those angry online posters saying rude things. I should clarify and say that while I recognize that sometimes people make good on their online threats, Arrington seems to be blanketing all the blame on FF without properly acknowledging...

LAN, their are outliers, but for the most part in terms of politics, technology etc there is a single culture on FF in my opinion
- RAPatton
@RAPatton: The only monoculture I see here is that everyone's obsessed with sharing, real-time and the cloud *shrugs*
- LANjackal
Where people are involved there is a mob mentality....not a useful blog post.
- Geoff Schultz
Arrington complaining about trolls and attacks is like online security companies complaining about viruses. They feed off of them, and some of us suspect they create them.
- Cristo
Zee: it's another Arrington poop fight. He throws enough of it on the wall to see what sticks, gets Robert Scoble riled up, and a mess of blog posts and forum fights ensue. SOP for Arrington. Meanwhile, he reaps the benefits of notoriety and links back to his site, all without ever setting foot in here, because we're all going over there to see what he wrote.
- Steven Perez
*sigh* Of all the online communities that I have been / are a member of, this one is the *least* susceptible to mobs. Now, mobs will happen here, because it's a community. But Arrington is not arguing against FF in particular, he's arguing against Social Media as a whole: "/sites like FriendFeed/ allow the centralization of a conversation to occur".
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
With all due respect, it might be wise to calm down and see this for what it is. A serious attempt at getting us to look at ourselves and ask, is it wise or needed to make every single comment we make in the online arena? Maybe its better to pick our battles for the ones that actually matter, like real life people who are being oppressed by their governments or such....

"They say that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach but it seems the dining tables have turned as increasing numbers of men are taking up cooking in a bid to seduce women. Dubbed 'Gastrosexuals' this new generation of men consider cooking more a hobby than a household chore and use their kitchen prowess to impress friends and prospective partners. Men having the ability to cook is also now a key factor in attracting women along with salary, status, personality and appearance, according to new research. The report 'Emergence of the Gastrosexual' cites the popularity of superstar chefs Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver as a factor in making cooking a macho pursuit. According to the study by food company PurAsia 48 per cent of people say being able to cook makes a person more attractive to them and 23 per cent of 18-34 year old men say they cook to potentially seduce a partner. The report also shows 60 per cent of British men now regularly cook for friends and family, favouring...

oh yes, there's a few here on FF.....:)

I cook everything in a microwave oven. Does that mean I'm microsexual? :)
- Morton Fox
++++Amber. Why the hell does "sexual" have to tagged to everything? What's the point of the label? I never thought anything could be worse than "foodie". I was wrong.
- Admiral Anika
i guess the sexual part is using cooking as a vehicle for getting laid
- Cee Bee
*chuckle* Aye, it's not about foodies getting some, it's about becoming a psuedo-foodie to get some.
- Michael W. May
Yeah, no...I got that. I'm talking in the larger scale of things. I mean, many people have the goal of of getting laid, but we don't call gearheads "autosexuals", okay, well that term wouldn't work, but you get my point? Why the need to do this to everything nowadays?
- Admiral Anika
actually, I thought the "sexual" part referred to getting the woman on the left a sammich so that she can reverse the amenorrhea.
- Sue Radd
Ah, I gotcha. I don't know why. I don't understand many things about our culture.
- Michael W. May
Especially now with the recession on, this is one trend I not only agree with, I'd fall victim to. I am completely "domestically disabled" so having a guy taking the time to cook a meal for me , and have an intimate conversation at home for two... Huge turn on.
- Nimabeckie
"Over half of the men surveyed prepare meals using separate ingredients everyday." Does the other half only use one ingredient then or do they not cook at all? For the record, I cook because I like to eat nice food, not because I want to seduce women...

I'm a gstrobitionist. I like to take food porn of my cooking so that I may make others jealous.

I finally decided my husband was going to be the head cook and he is excelling with different recipes. Sometimes I help and most times I ask what he is making me for dinner. I am now spoiled. Really it is a matter of him grilling or making me a protein base, he is too much a carb head otherwise.

[Brother]: Loren is in the hospital. His face became swollen and the MRI shows a 4.6cm tumor in the left frontal lobe. We are all waiting for more information. Surgery may be tonight or tomorrow. He wants everyone to know that he is smiling and has confidence in the doctors.
For those who don't know Loren, Loren Heiny develops applications, such as the Silverlight-based Search TIP and Math TIP, MathPractice, WebcamNotes, ShareKMC, and many more. Loren has written numerous books on programming and is an experienced commerical software developer. His first love is Robotics. Microsoft has awarded Loren a Tablet PC MVP each year since 2003.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
I am sad, the Heiny family is so good.
- Robert Scoble
My prayers for you and Lroen! Get well soon Loren :-)
- RetiredTeacherD
My prayers and thoughts are with Loren and family.
- Anne Bouey
Sending positive and best-outcome thoughts your way.
- Jason Miller
Please tell Loren we're thinking of him and PLEASE keep us updated. Moving this to my front page for monitoring closely.
- Molly
Loren's tumor is 4.6cm by 3.5 cm by 2.5 cm - no spines. No surgery tonight. We are waiting for more decisions .... radiologist said it would be rare for this to be related to the colon cancer .. but that must be determined.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
I am SO sorry to hear this news of Loren. Please let him know what he is in our thoughts and prayers. We will also be praying for any of the specialists whose care he will be under. May God be watching over Loren and your family during this time my friend. Please keep us posted as you can.
- Kevin Devin
Loren is in Scottsdale Memorial Hospital I am talking with him on the phone. He told me to check Friendfeed for his thread :) He looked from his iPhone (yes, the new 3gs). Larry just left to get some sleep so I'm talking with him to distract. Mom & Dad will go to Phoenix tomorrow. We'll know more tomorrow. Please send positive thoughts and thank you for your thoughtful support.

Wow, Loren can't catch a break. So he has a brain tumor? Is it on the surface of the brain? My mother in law had a bigger one that that, had it operated on, and is fine today. Her behavior was very weird for a while, though. She couldn't draw the right side of a clock, for instance. This is scary stuff and it bums me out. Loren has a lot of well wishers. For everyone who doesn't know...

Loren has a team of doctors discussing options. The radiologist spoke to my oldest brother and said it would be rare for the tumor to be related to the cancer Loren has been fighting for the past several years. The good news is that they are presently thinking this situation is operable. Robert -- Loren's memory started to fail and one of his friends noticed the change. This probably saved Loren's life.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
We found out this morning that the steroids taken last night have reduced the swelling around his eye.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
Loren, I need some help on a tablet app, do you have your pc with you? Take care man our thoughts and prayers are with you. /frankgo

6/26 Update: The surgeon decided Loren's "small-sized lemon" tumor is urgent but not an emergency. The assumption is now that the tumor is related to the other cancer (very rare). The surgery will take approximately 4 hours. He'll spend 2 days in ICU and 2-5 more days in the hospital. After 2 weeks of bed rest, the doctors will do another full body scan. He had a positive reaction to the steroids and the edema has gone down.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
LPH: good to hear. Yeah, brain tumors cause weird behavior changes. My mother in law couldn't recognize ANYTHING to the right of her. The brain is very amazing. The good thing is that she got back all that ability within a month. The brain routes around damage very well so I'm hopeful Loren will have a full recovery. Thoughts are with the Heiny's. Not fun to go through. If I ever go through this, make sure it's at a hospital with wifi! :-)
- Robert Scoble
Positive vibes are heading towards Loren from down under. Keep the good thoughts flowing.

Oh, so very sad to hear this. I wish him all the best. All his relatives too.

Sending all the best to you and Loren - you are in my thoughts.

Good luck- and a friend of mine survived a similar tumor so hopefully it will work out well!

Robert - we are hoping his memory recovers after this surgery. Amazing that he could keep 20k lines of code in his head - and now he wonders whether he took his meds for the day -- but he keeps on smiling. Frank: I missed your previous message. I hate to break it to you - but Loren didn't want any computers with him at the hospital. Only the Apple iPhone 3G S is by his side. He appreciates everyone's kind notes and good will. He's stronger today than yesterday.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
That's a relief. Hang in there Loren :)
- Rodfather
LPH: I'm hopeful as long as the tumor is on the surface of the brain. If it's embedded then things get tougher. It was amazing to see how my mother-in-law couldn't draw pictures, or tell you who is standing to her right. But she could do everything on the left. That all came back, so I'm hopeful his memory will come back too.
- Robert Scoble
Thank you for the updates. Sending good positive vibes for Loren & family.
- Maria Niles
Sorry to hear, I hope he gets better soon.
- Tyson Key
Robert, pictures are showing the tumor is "in the best position" - close to the skull.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
Luck and strength to Loren and all of you. Hope he'll be clamoring for his computers again very soon!
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
Sorry to hear the news last night. Today sounds more promising. Good vibes from Seattle. Hoping ur restIng well and will keep waiting for updates.
- Eliot
Update: I made a mistake earlier regarding Loren's memory. Actually, it's aphasia. He can't speak the memory but can type it. Loren's been asking for a computer to type out some ideas.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
Wow, that's so interesting. He can type the words but not say them?
- anna sauce
Surgery is scheduled for 2 pm PDT. Yes Anna. He does speak but gets tied up with the words.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
Sending positive thoughts for a successful surgery.
- Mike Doeff
My thoughts and prayers for you and Loren.
- Kathleen Forden
Loren recorded a little video before surgery http://www.youtube.com/watch... Surgery started on time at 2pm. The mid-surgery update we received was that it's going well. We think we'll hear more around 6pm. LPH is on his way to PHX then hospital - Walter is getting ready to leave the hospital to pick 'em up. (thanks, Walter!!!)
- Lora Heiny
Dr just came through. Went well. No real surprises or complications. Biopsy showed tumor is the same metastatic adenocarcinoma as before. Thinks he got all. Radiation will take care of rest. We can go see him in ICU in about 1/2 hr
- Lora Heiny

oh wow. why does he do that against your window? that's just strange. no birds around my way have gotten that weird
- Cee Bee
This has been going on for six years, feel the birds have a genetic predisposition now. The windows have a reflective coating so we think he sees himself and his reflection is a threat to the nest. Along with the pecking you get the nice cardinal spit stains on the window. The cats are amused though.
- Janet
Yes Taryn, six years and now a major joke at our home. I know the newer little pecking/spitting/pooping pretty cardinals are not the same ones but offspring of the original. He moves from window to window. Also had a wild turkey tom pecking on our front window in full regalia of feathers, he thought his reflection was another tom going after his hens. Cats love this stuff.
- Janet
Yayyyy! Glad the parents came through for the little fella. :) I had this lost one in my yard 2 years ago: http://www.flickr.com/photos... The parents were close so I took the shots quickly before I got dive bombed. They finally helped him or he finally flew away before it got dark.

This is our new little girl foster kitten. No name yet, but she is super adorable. She was found in a lot and is very scared and skiddish. Everything makes her jump and she is rather afraid of people. But the magic of head rubs wears away all reservations and I already have gotten a huge purr! She will be a lap cat before long. We will only have her for about 9 days as she is already large enough for her operation and if we can get her liking people they want to get her adopted at soon as possible.

Cutie pie!!! Don't know if you've tried this before, but rubbing something scented on all the critters in your home (I use rose water) helps them realize they're in the same pack. I would dab a bit on me and a bit on my cats to help everyone get acclimated.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
yay! There are tons of kittens now at most shelters if you are interested. So cute!
- Anna Lynn M.
Good tip! Thanks Tina. Might be really useful with this one. She has been separated from her brothers and sisters as they are all hissing and spitting at people and she was just cowering and hiding so they thought she would adapt quicker separated from the pack. So now she feels very alone. She has that blue bear which she sometimes hides behind which is currently her pack. Petting is working well so far but every little thing that helps is good.
- Rachel Lea Fox
If she's adopted the blue bear into her pack, put the scent on her and the bear first so she'll get used to it. Then start putting a bit on you or whichever human interacts with her the most. Then add in the other animals and people.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Anna, thanks. The shelter I foster with has had less kittens this year than usual, but it seems to be picking up (good for me, bad in general) so I'm hoping I will get more pretty soon after giving this girl back. If there is another lull, I might look into other shelters, but in the past the ones in my area have wanted me to foster cats in general, and I can only do kittens. My older cats won't accept adult cats.
- Rachel Lea Fox
I really have to stop looking at pictures of kittens or I am going to cave and get one before my daughter is completely toilet trained (I promised one as her reward).
- Martha
Martha, are you in northern ca? if so, let me know when your daughter is potty trained and maybe I can recommend a kitten or two. :)

Animals are so lucky for people like you.
- Patricia
Thanks Patricia. I'm so lucky to have all these wonderful sweetie animals in my life. they make me smile. Kevin and I both get so much out of having them!!
- Rachel Lea Fox
Patricia, that is AWESOME!!! My older cat will only let me take kittens, she feels threatened by most all adult cats. But she loves the kittens, and I do too so I don't ever get them older than about 3 months. I haven't had many this year, I'm feeling a bit kitten starved. So this little girl will get tons of affection!
- Rachel Lea Fox
Unfortunately, we are in the northeast, but maybe you have suggestions for fostering in this area?
- Martha
Martha, my sister has looked into foster dogs in the Rochester area, but she will likely know about the cats some too. She has done some volunteering, but not fostering yet. Other than that area I wouldn't know much.

Aww, looks like my kitty, only about 14 years younger.

Rachel, would you know of any place where I can make a donation for the organisation which rescues kitties / cats ? A website would be good, any place in Bay Area would be fine as well. Thanks.

vivek, we foster for the Palo Alto Animal Services who services Palo Alto, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills and Mountain View. Their names are Ali Karimi, 31, Mehdi Mahdavikia, 32, Hosein Ka’abi, 24 and Vahid Hashemian, 32, and Iran’s pro-government newspaper reported that they have all “retired.” Granted, in terms of graveness, this doesn’t really compare to what’s actually going on in Tehran and other parts of Iran. However, as Matthew Yglesias points out, it’s not insignificant. And it’s certainly telling. He writes:"

…a dictatorial regime that prefers to stay in power through “soft” methods can use the threat of destroying people’s careers. Instead of being put on trial and executed, becoming a martyr for the cause, you can just be rendered unemployable in the field of your choice in a decision nobody has to publicly defend but everyone understands. You become, then, not an imprisoned hero, but...

Alas destroying someone's career is a common technique everywhere - including our civilised ones...
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Can we give them asylum here in US? Our team needs the help.
- Steve C
Yes, and I'd like to thank you for referring to us as uncivilized people Joelle :)
- Ashkan
*shakes head* This is sad but I have a feeling these guys can get on with a team elsewhere (if they don't already play professionally somewhere). It sucks being deprived of the honor of playing for your country for simply expressing solidarity but I don't think their career has to be over necessarily.

Cee Bee, "by a dictatorial regime.. 'you can just be rendered unemployable in the field of your choice'.." you are so right! Thanks for telling this truth!
- Thierry R. Andriamirado
Wow. My dad's side (a majority blown up by the A-bomb) never talked about it and I didn't learn about it in school either. This is seriously incredible. Thanks for sharing, Cee.

Hugs to everyone... I must say Johnny, you look like you heard something creeping up on you in this photo. Was Georgia being sneaky?
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Hugs, good thoughts, many prayers for you both to find comfort and healing.
- Janet
Full on bear hug, not one of those man to man one arm back pattin' hugs. Full on bear hug. You guys are why #FF and people in general are so great --- er, uh, if that makes any sense to you. It does to me right now.
- SAM
Aw, this nearly brought tears to my eyes you guys. I'm sad to hear about your loss.
- Patricia
Yeah, the only problem is there is no place to put the ground
- Tyler (Chacha)
I'm guessing the flashing motif is there to warn about overloading. Cause I'd be quite worried about that with people trying to fit more than one per side.
- alphaxion
there's just enough space to stick a sharp metal object into that
- Cee Bee
No ground, no three prong capabilities, no legal in US i'm afraid.

Possibly the most unsafe socket I have seen in a long time. Form over function?
- John Cooper
Plus, a slot design like this can't make use of the gripper 'bumps' in regular sockets. ( http://www.howstuffworks.com/questio... ) This is total design wankery with little to no consideration for the actual use cases IMO...
- Andrew C
what about safety? Im sure they could design some sort of cover for it. This is awesome...
- Manny
But why would you cover it? The whole design imperative is the exposed slots, right?
