About to fly out to Mountain View. This is just way too early for words. Going to be leaving in -25ºC and arriving in a balmy +10ºC.
Welcome to area Matt. - Ozgur Demir
have fun! bring back some sun, would you, please? - Nathalie, Dreamer of FF
Just FYI, it snowed last night :-) - Todd Hoff
Yeah, from the window of my office in Mt. View I can see snow on the mountains but luckily it is warmer here than -25ºC. :) - Michal Cierniak
Did you make it? - Ray Cromwell
Eventually, after some delay. Feels almost as cold as when I left! - Matt Mastracci from iPhone

I need a good visualization for why days are shorter (in the northern hemisphere) in winter that would convince a 3-4 year-old child. My attempts of modeling Sun and Earth with a flashlight haven't been convincing so far. Maybe a nice video designed for young children? - Michal Cierniak from Bookmarklet

Having to use Vista for reasons beyond my control. Will someone please explain to me why the built-in Windows zip file extractor runs *literally* two orders of magnitude slower than 7-zip? Seriously, in what world should it take five whole minutes to extract a 64MB zip file?
Maybe it's bad I/O code when reading or writing to the file system? Is Microsoft crazy enough to have implemented their own deflate instead of using zlib? - Ray Cromwell
Yes, I believe they may indeed be that crazy. Even so, I just can't explain this level of slowness in any sane way. - Joel Webber
File copying on Windows is similar. It seems to get in deadlocks all the time or something. I feel like they must have introduced abstractions in the shell that make it impossible to make things fast or something. - Bret Taylor
I hear it runs faster if you toss the computer through an open, 2nd-story window - j1m
I have *many* complaints about Vista but I've never run into your problem. Not that this note helps you :( - Michal Cierniak from iPhone

Canon updates pro line with EOS-1D Mark IV: Digital Photography Review
"The EOS-1D Mark IV also delivers extreme low-light performance. Standard ISO on the EOS-1D Mark IV ranges from 100-12,800, while extended ISO ranges from a low of 50 to 102,400 – the highest ISO ever offered by a Canon SLR. This extreme low-light performance makes the EOS-1D Mark IV ideal for night shots or shooting at evening events, where the lack of light would normally make shooting impossible." - Michal Cierniak from Bookmarklet

Parents work to build playground for everyone in Palo Alto - San Jose Mercury News - http://www.mercurynews.com/breakin...
"Now Garcia and other local residents are pushing to raise funds for a new kind of playground, accessible to everyone — kids and parents, disabled and not. The universal playground, called "The Magical Bridge," would be built behind the Abilities United building in a shady, unused area of Mitchell Park, and incorporate features ranging from play structures with ramps to a playhouse large enough for a wheelchair." - Michal Cierniak from Bookmarklet

Help me understand this Brian Kernighan quote - Stack Overflow - http://stackoverflow.com/questio...
""Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it." --Brian Kernighan" - Michal Cierniak from Bookmarklet
Such a great quote. I like to think of it as a simple mathematical basis for the KISS principle, as it applies to software development. If you're ever looking for evidence of it in action, try making sense of a nasty compiler error from a C++ template -- it's not technically debugging, I suppose, but it's kind of the same problem. - Joel Webber

How Safe is the HPV vaccine? | Information Is Beautiful
"I’ve been reading a lot about the HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccine and the risk of serious side effects and even death. I thought I would seek out the numbers and put them in context. This is pretty cool. The driving death rate is pretty high. 1 of 260 people dies in a car crash. It would be nice to see more detailed death-by-driving stats broken down by various factors (age, location, type of road, amount of driving someone does etc). - Michal Cierniak
