"Since Tuesday, when The New York Times reported Annie Leibovitz had pawned the rights to all her photographs, there's been a lot of coverage in other publications around the world. And why not? It's interesting. We got our hands on the document that shows exactly what Leibovitz put up in exchange for a loan. Here's the page explaining what Leibovitz offered for collateral (highlighting is ours):"
- Jeff P. Henderson
from Bookmarklet
So she didn't really “pawn” them; she offered them as collateral in the event of a default?
- Anthony Citrano
A big part of why I wrote this post and have it running in my number one photo spot on Flickr right now is because I want more of my photography friends to sign up for the service. I *love* seeing photos here on FriendFeed and there are so many talented photographers who are not here yet who need to be. If we can get more of them to sign up, you guys will love their work. Of course there are many great photographers already on here but still a lot more who could join.
- Thomas Hawk
I had to re-share this with all my FB friends. :)
- Kelly W.
Still trying to figure out this whole friendfeed experience. I've had the account for a while and see lots of my twitter friends posting via ff
- Demetri Mouratis
Hi Demetri =) Different people use FF different ways because they want to get different things out of it. What are you hoping to get out of it?
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Thanks for the tip. I had FF but really never 'got' what it was for. This helped!
- Molly Nichelson
from twhirl
TH - for those photographers that are not on here, I put their flickr id into my Flickr Imaginary friend and see their images that way. However, it would be nice to get more photographers on here with their reader shares and such...
- Justin Korn
This is definitely the best "Why Friendfeed" post I've seen.
- Nick in Manila
Justin, agreed. I have a bunch of imaginary friend accounts for Flickr/Zooomr users as well. But it is nicer when they actually have accounts here, their work can be liked and commented to the larger FF community, etc. It seems like a few new people signed up today based on this post so I'm happy for that. Thanks Nick!
- Thomas Hawk
I have AlertThingy FriendFeed Edition as well as AlertThingy v2
- Outsanity
Did you just reformatted your post, Thomas? It a lot easier to scan through now.
- Alan Le
Alan, a lot of times I post first and edit later. I probably shouldn't do that, but yeah, after posting I broke up some of the paragraphs better, bolded a few things etc., to make it easier to read.
- Thomas Hawk
That's great. Make sure to check out Windows Live Writer for formatting blog posts if you haven't already yet. By the way, I love the new blog design. It's much better than when I helped you with the html way back. http://thomashawk.com/2006...
- Alan Le
Barlow, Im currently developping an Adobe AIR tool for FriendFeed: we comin' !
- David Guyon
Y'know... I must've spent two months randomly Tweeting things like "Will someone PLEASE explain to me why I should be using FriendFeed?" ... And then two days ago I start using my account (I'd had one for a while)... and NOW someone finally makes a post outlining why I should be here. You're two days late, Mr. Hawk, two days late. :P
- Lou
actually, there's no search for Russian word forms on Frf. For me that looks as if there's no search at all
- orie
hmmm.. I didn't know that orie. It seems like there is a lot of international users on FF, that's surprising to me.
- Thomas Hawk
I've been trying to make sense of FF for months now, but every time I come away confused. As it is I feel like I'm drowning under all the social networking sites available. I use Twitter, Plurk and Facebook the most, and I use Ping.fm so I only have to post status updates once. How can I integrate FF into this without making things even more confusing?
- Chris Taylor
oooh! I found the zooomr version of this post with no formatting and I whined somewhere else in my FF feed. This one with all the formatting is better :D
- Tamar Weinberg
Mark - agreed. Also, Thomas ... very nice blog. I like.
- Amani
Good post Thomas. I was thinking it would be hard to find 10 points, but I agree with all your points, and am sure there are probably many more.
- Peter Efland
@Tamar, the unformated text was a problem on the Zooomr image. Kristopher's fixed that bug now so text in descriptions on Zooomr photos should format correctly now.
- Thomas Hawk
I wasn't using FF, but signed up after your post. Now let's see if it is really so useful ;-)
- Marcel Körner
@Marcel also take into consideration who you are subscribed to. Aside from maybe four on your current sub list, they are not very active at all on FF. This will affect your experience here.
- Carlos Ayala
Didn't know there was a "Porn" room on FF (see screenshot)...
- David Young
how did you see that they are not active on FF?
- Marcel Körner
David, the "porn" room on FriendFeed isn't all that active actually. I'm not really interested in porn per se, just thought it was a good group name to claim in the great FriendFeed land group name grab of 2008.
- Thomas Hawk
@Marcel by their numbers, and the fact that i know most of them and can tell you first hand that they are not. (if you hover over people's names you will see their numbers)
- Carlos Ayala
I see that everyday around my block, okay maybe not. That is indeed strange. Wondering if they knew the cam was coming and had it setup.
- Sloan Bowman
1. I use it to keep in touch with friends I don't see regularly. Time and distance puts restrictions on friendships, but just because those barriers are there, I don't want to lose touch with good friends and former colleagues.
- Chris Nixon
2. I use it to share family photos with my friends. Over the last year my Flickr account has become a place to showcase the best of my photography, and I don't want to mess up my steam with too many baby pictures. I love them, but unless you know me personally, they mean very little to you. More of my family are in Facebook than Flickr.
- Chris Nixon
3. I switched off most of the Facebook apps, and the invitations. This has VASTLY improved the Facebook experience. No more superpoking (which was becoming painful). No more Zombies. No more frikkin drinks that I can't drink. It's all about keeping in touch.
- Chris Nixon
4. Facebook keeps my IRL friends up-to-date with what I'm doing online without drowning them. They can easily drop in and out of my photography, blogging, music and movie tastes without having to sign up for a service they otherwise have very little interest in.
- Chris Nixon
5. The iPhone app is brilliant. With only small restrictions, it gives me a great deal of the full Facebook interface while keeping it simple and suited to the iPhone's UI.
- Chris Nixon
6. I don't friend everybody at every opportunity. Only IRL friends, colleagues and online contacts who I have had actual contact with get a look in nowadays. This keeps things simple, and I can keep up by visiting once a day.
- Chris Nixon
You have to # the list though ie "Here's 6 reasons Why...." like a blogger ~ then it starts a meme ie Scoble http://www.kyte.tv/ch...
- sofarsoShawn
LOL. I would have, but I wasn't sure how many reasons there were when I started.

A quote from my son, as he sat on the couch watching me play Mario Kart - "oh my god, do I really let you drive me around?" He doesn't think my Mario Kart skills are up to par, apparently.
Think of a constrction contractor, etc... taking a client to a job site and everyone can use the wifi to check email while away from the office. I do this all the time.

"Beyond the Twitter integration though, C-SPAN has created multiple ways to sort through video from the debate, which will run on about a 10-minute delay from what’s happening live. The first feature is the Debate Timeline, which allows you to navigate through the debate chronologically and see which issues are being discussed at what times and who is talking. In a demo this morning, the site was filled with content from the Kerry/Bush debates from ’04, so, for example, you could jump to six minutes in and see video of both Bush and Kerry responding to questions from Jim Lehrer about the 9/11 terrorist attacks."
- Jenny Levine
Please make it stop. I really hope this totally discredits the Religious Right and gets them kicked out of the Republican Party. They are the ones who pushed her as VP. They deserve 100% of the blame for putting this train wreck out there.
- Robert Scoble
i'm so sick of people trying to destroy one politician after another through finding every little bit and going after it. also i am a religious person who is right leaning, but i had no idea who sarah palin was until the nomination took place. did i miss some form of secret religious right memo where we all picked palin?
- Jonathan Jesse
@Jonathan: Don't mind Robert. he frequently babbles nonsense. It's part of his charm. <psst!>: There is no powerful 'religious right' conspiracy.
- Art Lindsey III
Robert: seriously - if you read this word-parsed tripe from HuffPo, you'll ascribe to their distorted reality. You are who you read, remember?
- Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
@Art I ignore some of the babble that comes forth:) but i'm so sick of this election of both the right and the left picking over every little statement that each side makes and going out of its way to destroy the other candidate. no one really "knows" the real person anyway. this election has been going on way way too long
- Jonathan Jesse
@Jonathan yeah I didn't get the religious memo either. Darn it I always miss the memos. Scoble since you are aware of these memos can you make sure I get the next one?
- Colide81 (James)
clearly she gets flustered when asked direct questions. Republican party should be paying CBS not to air any more footage. you'd think any American (human?) could at least fake New York Times, Time or Newsweek at the drop of a dime. and any person from Alaska could drop Anchorage Daily News (not being from there I had to look that up).
- Jon Price
@Jonathan/Mark/Art - The problem with Palin is that the republican party is simply asking us to have faith that she'll do the right thing. I'm seriously not trying to be rude, but it definitely plays into a faith-driven mindset. I personally don't think (and hope) that it's working, but we'll know soon enough.
- Jim McCusker
Google [sarah palin cnp] for details on how the CNP (Council for National Policy), an organization on the far religious right founded by Christian Armageddonist Tim LaHaye (the author of the Left Behind Series) played the key role in choosing Sarah Palin for the VP slot. Also Google [sarah palin dominionism] for analysis of Palin's close ties to the extreme religious right.
- Sean McBride
@Jim I do agree that a lot of it does play to the faith in her to do the right job sort of thing. but shouldn't the focus be on the debate between the presidential candidates on both side? is there a reason the democrats focus so much on governor palin and not on senator mccain?
- Jonathan Jesse
Jonathan: you know damn well that the Religious Right picked her. Should I pull up the articles where they all cheered when McCain went with her? I don't care what belief system you have as long as you don't try to force it on the rest of us like you've been doing for the past 20 years. By the way, I went to one of the crazy right wing churches for 20 years and saw the politicians come through.
- Robert Scoble
@Sean - It doesn't matter... the religious right isn't going to be swayed away from her for being religious. BUT.... if they sense she truly can't handle the job, well, perhaps they just might reconsider their support for her. Going after her on religious views is a total waste of time IMO.
- Jim McCusker
Sean: thanks for doing the GoogleWork for me. Yup, that's the one that Jesse should read up on.
- Robert Scoble
wow, the religious right is here too. Guys, Jesus Camp isn't a secret, and who they support and who now controls the direction and message of the Republican party is no secret either. http://www.youtube.com/watch...
- Adam Turetzky
Jim: you're right, but it's THEIR religious views that got THEM to support such a wacko. They should be discredited and kicked out of the Republican Party because of the damage that THEY did to it. (I used to be a Republican and left the party because of them).
- Robert Scoble
@Robert sorry if you feel that i've been trying force any religous views or ties on you.... and also thanks for the google work, obviously my google fu is not working tonight, i will read those articles and perhaps learn something new.
- Jonathan Jesse
Jonathan: it's not you. Personal you. It's the Ralph Reed types who are actively trying to get an agenda pushed through Washington DC. Fun reading. Might turn your stomach. Remember, I used to be a Christian and used to attend one of Silicon Valley's most conservative churches. There's a reason I left the church and left the Republican party and it's this kind of stuff where they push in someone they think is good simply because she's "Christian." No, that's not good enough.
- Robert Scoble
remember we are all debating on whether or not a VICE presidential candidate is qualified to do the job of a VICE president, instead of debating whether or not Senator McCain or Senator Obama are the right person for the job of president, which has so much greater responsiblity. those responsiblities are are limited by the Constitution to becoming President should the President become...
- Jonathan Jesse
Robert: I agree with you also. The Republican's real problem is that they used religion to win the past two elections. Now they are (hopefully) realizing the folly in this decision. My point is to totally take religion out of the debate and focus on ability. McCain is on his heals right now, but it's no time to relax. We need to keep at it and dodge the religious related angles.
- Jim McCusker
and i find it silly that everyone feels that Senator McCain is going to die as soon as he becomes President and Palin would then become President.
- Jonathan Jesse
Religion doesn't matter here IMO. It's just Palin. And it's just the fact that she can't even come up with one Newspaper. NYT, WSJ, Washington Post, Washington Times, LA Times, SF Chronicle ... even USA Today. My theory here - she knows these Newspapers but is thinking ... which ones lean 'right', which ones endorsed McCain? She isn't sure so she just goes for 'all of them'. I'm probably wrong but ... better thinking that than that she can't actually name one.
- AJ Kohn
Jonathan, according to most actuaries, McCain has a 25% chance of dying in office if elected....
- Peter Ghosh
Jonathan: the VP also gives speeches, meets with dignitaries, and helps shape the policies of the White House. Oh, and then there is that little thing that the VP COULD become our President one day. It's not a small thing. The fact that you are trivializing it demonstrates your world view and it scares me.
- Robert Scoble
@Peter: +1. It's not that we want McCain to die, but the statistics are the statistics. He'd be the oldest first term president elected. If you were getting on a roller coaster, one had a 1 in 100 chance of flying off the rails and the other 3 in 100 - which one would you get on?
- AJ Kohn
I like a few overzealous religious people make ALL religious people into these Bible-thumping monsters. Seriously, not all religious people force things on people. Some of us, dare I say, respect people's right to disagree with us.
- Evan
AJ: if that's true, then she should have had a partisan answer ready like "I read the New York Times just to see what the elitists are thinking about." AJ: religion ALWAYS matters with Christians, especially fundamentalist types like I used to be. Anyone who says it doesn't is lying.
- Robert Scoble
Yes Robert there are some real asses way right. But right now everyone on the left is trying to prove, on social media platforms, that they're "in". The self whoring going on right now, by so many I otherwise admire is haltingly sad. I will never forget this phase of American sociopolitical posturing. Democrats should be holding their filthy, lying pols to task. The outright lies this week, without a blink, are beyond quantifying.
- Ed Shahzade /NextInstinct
@Jonathan: while it's true Palin is up for VP, not Prez, I *always* judge the VP nominee for suitability for Prez. VP has taken unfilled term twice in my lifetime. nine times in our history. Fact is some are more prepared than others. We all need to acknowledge that w/o assuming that acknowledgment is a 'slam' or 'unfair' or 'bigoted' in some way.
- MikeAmundsen
We all know that shes not the best, and I don't support her, but I think shes going to surprise everyone on Thursday. She will put together a sentence that most of us will understand and up "stage" Biden nothing else. And if she doesn't if she really does come across as we perceive her it should be the end of the campaign.
- Sheraz Mahmood
i knew i shouldn't have jumped into this discussion...... anyways heading to bed and hope we can have another spritied discussion another day
- Jonathan Jesse
Douglas: Biden isn't perfect, that's for certain, but I bet he can name a newspaper or two and something that they said yesterday and have something funny to say about them. Evan: I'm not talking about all religious people. Most of whom don't even live in the United States. I'm talking about the ones who are directly involved in trying to push through an agenda in Washington DC. They should be totally discredited after this election and kicked out of the Republican Party. Are you involved in politics in DC?
- Robert Scoble
Forgive me for the pending obnoxious/crass comment, but I always want the VP and/or Pres to be BETTER than me. At this point, put me in a red dress with glasses and tits. I CAN DO A BETTER JOB! Hey, at the very least, I can roll off a fu&^ing newspaper I read every once in a while. This is the best we could conjur up? Left/Right, Black/White, Red/Blue, who cares? We need competency restored to the white house, and Palin isn't cutting it.
- Peter Ghosh
If you were constantly attacked no matter what you say, you'd be paranoid to say anything, too. She's only been doing this for four or five weeks. I dare say that not a single person among us would come out from under the endless attacks and endless scrutiny Palin has gotten without looking like an idiot, too. And I do agree she looks really bad at this point, but I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt till Thursday night. The debate will tell.
- Dawn
More Gotcha Journalism. Damn that Katie Couric and her hard-hitting questions.
- Trish R
Johnathan: McCain's father died at 71. But I also agree you're right about talking about McCain vs. Obama. Personally, McCain's stunts over the past few days speak volumes about why I wouldn't vote for him. His vitriolic spin is at an amazing level at this point and includes a large amount of half-truth's and down-right lies. Obama has his own misleading statements, but nothing that approaches McCain. McCain plays us all as fools who will not do our homework. Do your homework objectively and make
- Jim McCusker
Sheraz: the problem with the debates is that Biden might chew on her too much and that'll come across as arrogant and mean. I'm sure they both are getting the best coaching that money can buy, it sure will be interesting to watch no matter what happens.
- Robert Scoble
@Dawn I agree, this is going to be an interesting debate. I wonder if Biden will do worse....
- Sheraz Mahmood
Others are debating her fitness for president "I think she has pretty thoroughly - and probably irretrievably - proven that she is not up to the job of being president of the United States," David Frum, a former speechwriter for President George W. Bush who is now a conservative columnist, said in an interview.
- Mel Buckpitt
"real" folks don't read..look at George W.
- Anna Lynn M.
Dawn: that's BS and you know it. She's the only thing that's pulling crowds right now. She's on top of the world. Or should be. And anyone who can't take a little criticism shouldn't be there in the first place. I get picked on all the time too, but it doesn't keep me from knowing what I read 20 minutes ago and having a decent argument about it. That's really a lame excuse. Sorry, but it is. This is the big time and she has the best coaches in the world helping her out.
- Robert Scoble
@Evan yes you are right, I too am religious and not one time when I have pushed my views on others. I have debated and defended what I think. However, I do know some people who speak of kicking conservatives n the nuts? Gee who has said that?
- Colide81 (James)
@Dawn True she's been on the defensive a lot of late, but this is a cake walk compared to what the job she is vying for entails. Also the questions she is getting from reporters are predictable and she should be able to knock them out of the park with advance coaching from staffers.
- Cat Laine
from twhirl
Anna: and we should be measuring our politicians against Bush? Hey, in that case, I deserve a gold medal because I walked up the stairs today. Geesh.
- Robert Scoble
@Robert: You calling me a liar?! *lol* You're absolutely right, she should have had that answer lined up. And yes, religion is often (I don't like absolutes) a contributing factor in politics. It certainly was in selecting Palin. I'm just saying her inability to name a newspaper is just more about Palin herself and not about her religion. She's lost her confidence and is out of her element and ill-prepared for auditioning for the job, much less the job itself.
- AJ Kohn
Robert absolutely I hope he is smart enough to realize that and adjust accordingly.
- Sheraz Mahmood
Colide: are you in Washington DC? Are you a Christian working on policy there? If not, then stay out of this. I'm not talking about you.
- Robert Scoble
I dont care what Palin believes, or what the people who follow Palin believe in Its just the fact that she cant do these basic things like answer direct questions or do an interview correctly (or professionally) and she's in a potential position of power. Thats scary to me.
- Colby Olson
AJ: her religion and stances on such is what got her the job interview. She wouldn't be there if she didn't come across as a good Christian. I'm sure they didn't vet her quite well enough and now they might be realizing that. Don't like absolutes? Oh, really? Remind me of the time that Ralph Reed would say "OK" to someone who is, um, nuanced, on, say, abortion or gay marriage?
- Robert Scoble
Colby: but you do have to wonder "how did she get picked?" THAT is where it matters.
- Robert Scoble
I love how people still defend her after watching those interviews. Isn't it obvious at this point that she is not qualified for this position. Seriously, she looks like she has no idea what she is talking about. She has been almost completely isolated from the media. No, if in the same situation we may not all be able to respond to these questions. Did you make the same excuses for our...

- PC Easy
from twhirl
@Scoble I am but a midwesterner with a mind to share my opinion. Scoble if you wanted me to stay out of this you shouldn't have posted it. I ignore a lot you say because its meaningless chatter to me. But once in awhile I like to get involved when what i believe is being attacked as is happening here. But I have to ask why have me stay out of this?
- Colide81 (James)
PC Easy: a world view is a hard thing to shake. I know it took me five years or more to shake some of the stuff I was told to believe at church (I attended for 12 years).
- Robert Scoble
Colide81: are you saying you are someone who believes in chosing an idiot for the job simply because she's Christian? And, are you involved in politics at the national level and trying to force your political beliefs on the system by making sure that only believers get into office? If so, then I'm talking about you, yes. But, that only denotes a very small number of religious people in this world. I happened to attend a church where they were part of an organized effort nationwide to get Christians elected.
- Robert Scoble
@Robert: I totally agree she got the job, in part, because of religion. If she hadn't been a strong religious conservative, she wouldn't have gotten the nod. They needed to energize the base because they were luke warm on McCain. *I* don't like absolutes, doesn't mean others don't use 'em and I do believe some parties use them far more than others.
- AJ Kohn
15 years later I can see that that goal was and is horribly corrosive to our nation. It set us back in technology, science, education, international standing, and a whole lot of other things leading directly to Palin's choice. So, yes, if you're in one of those organizations that's trying to push religion into politics, yes, I'm talking about you.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: Palin has too many coaches helping her out! I think that's a big part of her problem. They need to cut her loose and just allow her to be herself. And, no, I don't think it's BS. If she's as stupid and you and others believe her to be, then how did she get to be elected Governor, must less have such a high favorability rating?
- Dawn
@Scoble I don't like Palin because she is a Christian, I like her because she has proven her self in Alaska despite what is being talked about on the news. I don't really care who is elected as long as they can 1. lower taxes 2. be strong on national defense 3. get things cleaned up in the financial world. I don't force my political beliefs on anyone Scoble I just fight for the person I believe can best lead this country which is much the same as Obama supporters are doing........
- Colide81 (James)
Dawn: I'm sure she's like me. Cuddly, warm, able to talk her way into most things. But, if you tried to make me do surgery I would be out of my league and would screw it up. It's not that I'm stupid, it's just that I'm not the right one for the job. Alaska is a state smaller than the town I grew up in (population wise). Getting elected there is a lot different than trying to run a country. That's something that we all keep forgetting in our rush to want to support her.
- Robert Scoble
@Scoble What I don't like is you and others complain so much about Palin but how aobut cleaning up the crap in your own back yard? There are so many times Obama has screwed up and can't speak right with out his teleprompter and speech writers. But that won't be talked about because he is a agent of change isn't he? The church I go to has Obama supporters, independents, and McCain supporters. My church doesn't push anyone to vote in anyway.
- Colide81 (James)
Colide81: well, this is where we're going to have to differ. She has no experience in DC. None. She hasn't even read the Washington Post. Not qualified to be in the White House, sorry.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: Since when does a VP run the country? Oh yeah, I forgot...ten minutes after McCain is sworn in he's going to drop dead. Listen, I said I'm not happy with her at this point either, but I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt till Thursday. I think that's only fair.
- Dawn
Palin simply needs to be heard. I 'currently' have little faith that she has the necessary skills to be a VP, but I'm totally willing to hear her out. The republican talking point machine simply will not permit this and we are left to judge on a few short interviews. Palin was hardly given many gotcha questions. She simply flubbed a bunch of recent soft-ball questions where details were asked of her instead of us simply having 'faith' and trusting she had the knowledge.... Get it???
- Jim McCusker
Colide81: now we are seeing your true colors. Obama stood up and won the debates and did so with thoughtful, clean, clear, answers. You might not have liked the answers, but they were there. Palin? Have you heard her speak to her church before she knew she was going to be a candidate? Give me a break. Not even in the same camp. But, have a good one. We're getting the country you want. I'm in the way small minority.
- Robert Scoble
I find that hard to believe she has never read the Washington Post, heck at 11 I read the Washington Post.
- Colide81 (James)
Scoble and where in the constitution does it say to be President or to be Vice President you must read the Washington post?
- Colide81 (James)
Jim: there's a reason I ask softball questions. It gets you in the door and they are never as easy as they might seem. The best interviews I've had are when I simply shut up and let the other person talk and talk and talk and talk. Some become more and more brilliant. Others dig themselves a hole.
- Robert Scoble
Colide81: where in the constitution does it say that you must be a Ralph Reed approved candidate?
- Robert Scoble
I'm not in politics in DC, Robert. I'm one of those apathetic voters that chuckles at all the lemmings that continue to bash one side and cheer the other while their friends are making billions on mortgages and oil. I'm a vet, I love my country - but I really do think that Dems and Reps are nothing more than lemmings... following their leaders right off the cliff.
- Douglas Karr
from twhirl
Douglas: that is the most true thing that's been written in the past few posts. So, with that, I'm off to catch a plane to NYC. Hope the country is still solvent when I land. Take care of FriendFeed for me and keep your feet off the furniture! :-)
- Robert Scoble
Scoble I have never hidden who I am, so I don't know what true colors you speak of but my hope is if I shine of colors its a rainbow. I love the color red.
- Colide81 (James)
Any how Scoble on any given day just take a look at my feed and you will see that I post things on Obama. Things talking about how corrupt he is, or his good friends the terrorists.
- Colide81 (James)
Dawn: don't go acting like Palin. Use Google when you hear a name you have no clue about. I'm out of here.
- Robert Scoble
Jim: Actually, I was just looking at that after I Googled him.
- Dawn
@Scoble if we were going to have a Ralph Reed approved candidate then why didn't we pick Mike Huckabee? I mean he is a Pastor, he would have fit very nicely into your whole complaining.
- Colide81 (James)
Have a safe trip, Robert. Nothing like stirring up the pot and heading out. :)
- Douglas Karr
from twhirl
Ultimately John McCain made this selection. He could have chosen any number of solidly conservative, experienced women to be his VP. Instead he chose someone who he didn't know at all who is clearly not ready for the job, the scrutiny or the pressure. Palin can be faulted for her lack of curiosity and knowledge, but McCain's judgement is the real outrage here.
- Kevin Pedraja
@Robert - I agree about simple questions. The problem with Palin is that you really need to follow up in order to get her off her talking points so that we can truly hear what SHE THINKS... not what she was told to say. This is what Katie Couric is exposing expertly... and probably without trying very very hard.
- Jim McCusker
Robert: I think you are generalizing too much when it comes to your hate of "the Religous Right" based on your ten years (or whatever) of choosing to be some sort of extreme evangelical. I'm Christian (Catholic) and I lean right, and if you think I'm an idiot because of it, I can assure you that you are very much mistaken.
- Dawn
Dawn: I gotta go. My church was almost exactly like Palin's is. So, are you calling her an extreme evangelical? I wouldn't disagree, by the way. I have no problems with you unless you are Ralph Reed's associate. Funny that you didn't even know who he was yet he's been one of the most powerful people in Washington DC for more than a decade.Jim: oh, it's harder than it looks. Katie was probably holding back with all of her strength. Anyway, see ya!

Robert: I'm sure there are many powerful people in D.C. that I've never heard of. :) As for me calling Palin an extreme evangelical, I would never assume that any more than I would assume Obama is a wacko for being in his extreme left-wing church for 20 years. Again, let's see how Thursday goes.
- Dawn
The level of knowledge about American inside politics displayed by Sarah Palin supporters in this thread is so low that it beggars belief. The quality of mind of Palin's supporters proves Scoble's points about Palin.
- Sean McBride
Sean: Are you REALLY suggesting that Americans who don't follow "inside politics" have a low quality of mind and are somehow inferior to you? If so, your own brain-o-meter has shot up to Arrogant Clueless Moron.
- Dawn
Dawn -- I am saying that none of the Sarah Palin supporters in this particular thread have the slightest idea of what is really going on in the American political system. They haven't done their homework; they don't know the organizational and individual players. No wonder they feel comfortable with Palin, who is the most embarrassingly ignorant politician on the American national stage. She almost makes Bush look semi-smart -- only almost.

Religious fundamentalists and extremists have ruined the Republican Party and the conservative movement. Some of the key players and factors: 700 Club, CBN (Christian Broadcasting Network), Charles Colson, Christian Armageddonists, Christian Coalition, Christian Zionists, CNP (Council for National Policy), CUFI (Christians United for Israel), Daniel Lapin, David Brog, Dennis Prager,...

we should work to save newspapers. they're historic brands with hundreds if not thousands of employees. Will blogs replace that? Not likely, at least for now. We should try to help preserve what's great about the newspaper media.
- Patricia
Put economic crisis in the title = cheap way to attract attention.
- Vincent van Wylick
We don't need to work to save anything. It's survival of the fittest. Newspapers don't need our charity. They need to adapt to a changing marketplace.
- Jason Shultz
Changes in news media are being driven by rapidly accelerating technological change. The economic downturn will increase that acceleration. Another factor is customer preference: Most people prefer to fire up their laptops and read the online news services and/or blogs. Heritage news media such as old-style newspapers had better adapt real fast or they will go the way of the dinosaurs.
- J. D. Ebberly
When people turn to the latest news on the economic crisis, they aren’t turning to the Wall Street Journal but to WSJ.com. I believe wsj.com increases its page views because of the bailout news. I don't think we can see any "Smart startups" in the short run that can compete with big media corporations especially during economic crisis. Economic crisis makes it very difficult for any startup to survive and compete. So my conclusion is economic crisis may actually delay the death of newspapers.
- Kerem Ozkan
Kerem, I don't disagree that newspapers websites get a boost in a storm (and I mentioned this in the post), but it does still hasten the death of newspapers in print form, because print becomes even more irrelevant. My guess before is 5-10% of newspapers left within 10-20 years (maybe sooner), few to none left with a physical print newspaper. The smart ones will work out online, and that will be their core and only business
- Duncan Riley
Newspapers in print will not necessarily die out, as long as there are places in the world which don't have good access to electricity. They, however, will be pushed to transform there news delivering act into a myriad of services (print, web, mobile)

Leather: I'll admit to leaving it on auto. I'll clean a few of these up in Lightroom, since I shoot everything in Raw. This is one thing that separates me from the best. The best, like http://www.thomashawk.com process every image they upload. I've processed none of them, so you get to see all my in-camera mistakes.

oh but I liked the auto white balance... noticed but knew it was worth it...

robert see the comments from me & aaron on your blog. i'd love to see you do the same thing in reverse as i describe. i don't think you would have gotten nearly the traffic for the bellagio pic had you promoted it like you did the hugh one, simply because it wasnt as good or interesting.
- Deva Hazarika
Deva nails it. The one photo is very good and the other not so. Popularity and promotion certainly helps a lot – after all, there are countless great photos that don't get any attention – but it won't if you promote boring stuff. (edited a typo)
- Ole Begemann
Ole: I don't disagree with that at all. But, like you said, promotion did play a part.
