Chicken broth instead of water, and no salt. Double the recipe. - Christa

Slow Cooker Split Pea Soup Recipe | Made this recipe tonight. It came out AWESOME!!! I'm very pleased!! Two notes, it did seem to need the full 10 hours to cook and also, I did strain some of the fat/water off the top at the end before mixing it all together. - http://cullyskitchen.com/slow-co...

made this tonight. yummy! but mine didn't take as long as it said at all. i checked it at 7 hours and it was done. probably was done earlier, but i didn't think of checking it. i used a ham steak, and chicken broth instead of water, so didn't add any salt. - Christa
Christa, I do wish more slow cookers had similar temps. Low on one can be medium on another and so on. My old slow cooker I often felt that Low was really too high, it would often hit a rolling boil, which is not what low should do. When I researched my current slow cooker, I was looking for one where the low setting was rated as actually low. I'm pretty happy with it, but I should likely start making notes that my cooker might take longer than others. Sorry about that. :) - Rachel Lea Fox

Am I the only one around here that thinks it is a terrible idea to contact someone through LinkedIN and just assume they'll get it? And not just "oh hi, how ya doin?" I mean "Hey want a job?" or "Hey, wanna speak at our conference?" Wouldn't you follow up via email or something?
LinkedIn is not my go to communication channel for something like that... Also, your contact info , like, all over the internets - awd from Android
Terrible idea. Facebook, on the other hand... - Meg V. Meg
I've actually had pretty good luck with it. YMMV. - RepoRat
Actually I think that's the kind of thing LinkedIn is for, ie, professional opportunities and professional networking. But I would only use it if I couldn't find an email address to approach someone as a conference speaker. - LibrarianOnTheLoose
That is a terrible idea, yes. - Steele Lawman
I almost never check or update my LinkedIn page, so that would be a terrible way of reaching me, for sure. - Rachel Walden
That's one reason I deleted my LI account. I didn't want people to think it was a useful way to reach me. - Jason P
never assume that someone you don't know uses a particular social media thing as much as you do. just because a person has an account somewhere (*cough*G+*cough*) doesn't mean they check it as religiously as you do. find their email/phone and contact them the traditional way. - Christa
I get an email every time someone sends me a message on LinkedIn, which isn't very often, so I know to check at that time? But it sounds like most of y'all do not have that setting enabled. I still wouldn't rule out LinkedIn, but yes, look for a damn email lazy person. - LibrarianOnTheLoose
What Christa said. I have a hard time understanding why folks I don't know want to connect with me on LI when the site itself specifically advises users only to connect to folks we know well. So presumably one would have proper contact info for someone they want to hire or invite to speak, unless it's so one they've lost touch with over the years. - Mary B: #TeamMonique
I am seriously annoyed by all the people endorsing me who have no idea who I am or what I do. I haven't checked out to see if I can un-endorse myself. - Chelle Chelle Ro Ro

Hi, has anyone used a consultant to look at organizational structure and staffing? Our preliminary list includes R2 and Sam Demas. Experiences with them? Other ideas? Thanks.
cough. cough. Seriously, I know three people who could probably do this with their eyes closed. MCC, Jenica and our very own WarMaiden could probably do your POW justice and make some sense of your structure, staffing and direction. - ♫410 I Coach 'em Up♫

R2 is the company that told OCLC to centralize everything, which caused many regional networks to close down due to the loss in OCLC revenue. and libraries lost the local consulting and training that the regional networks had offered. (full disclosure - i was the OCLC Member Services Consultant for NEBASE, the Nebraska OCLC regional network. this change by OCLC forced our network, and... more... - Christa

Sam Demas led our external review and R2 did a separate review of our tech services workflow. I think it's important that there be some institutional spine in place, in that an external review shouldn't "tell you" to do anything; they should point out things you might not have noticed or be reluctant to acknowledge, and suggest several ways forward. Sam is a big idea guy, so if we tried to do everything he suggested, we wouldn't have time to check out books or teach classes. - Steele Lawman
This a little out of left field and many not apply in your state or to a university--but at my last place, we had several sessions dealing with just this sort of thing led by a person who was essentially a community organizer from the local extension office. Curious: what do you think about the term "library futurist"? It was the job title that was part of a speaker bio I just read and it made one of my eyebrows lift at a considerable speed.
*eyebrow lifts at considerable speed* - RepoRat
The title was held by someone other than...? - Julian
I think negative things about the term. - Meg V. Meg
The people whose vision of libraries I trust and appreciate the most are probably the least likely to call themselves library futurists. It's keynote bait, right? - John Dupuis
i'm interested in people who are WORKING for library futures, not just talking about them. - jambina
I think of Professor Trelawney from Harry Potter. I sit around listening to them spouting nonsense waiting for them to go into a trance and suddenly say something super insightful, relevant, and meaningful. Sometimes, the trance never comes. - Andy
There are librarians and library-watchers that I think have a pretty impressive ability to synthesize what's going on and make educated guesses about where it might lead: Cliff Lynch, Lorcan Dempsey and others in the OCLC crew, Barbara Fister, Mita Williams, Peter Brantley, Walt Crawford, the late Lee Dirks. Don't think any of them call themselves futurists. They're presentists. - RepoRat
jambina+++ What crackpot organization actually hires someone to be a futurist? we got shit we need done NOW thankyouverymuch. - Catherine Pellegrino
But, is that person a library tech trend spotter? - Yo Joe. No, go slow.
I've been trying to think of a polite way to say that it's a silly jackassy thing to call oneself. - Jason P
I think i might have used it in my latest bio... Was trying to thing how to capture the current research I'm doing about future roles and services for libraries, and might have boiled it down to that :( but i'm not all tech trendy and toywatchy. Although, i guess i might be jackassy..... - RudĩϐЯaЯïan
Wow. Thanks, RR; a fine list to be part of. And I think you're right: I've never heard Cliff or Lorcan call themselves futurists, and I sure as hell don't use the term. (At least three on that list, including me, have been LITA "trendspotters" but I don't think any of us/them much care for that term either. Still, better than futurist.) - Walt Crawford
Trending spotting? well i don't know about you guys, but besides individuals, I look at some libraries... that almost always are ahead of the curve. But to be fair, if you "look under the hood", those institutions are innovative because they are lucky to have some awesome people... - aarontay
I do this as well. CDL, Michigan, Penn State for the areas I'm primarily interested in. - RepoRat
Michigan is awesome I think in almost all fronts,if you are feeling cocky about your achievements just compare with them :) In Australia I like UTS, QUT & Curtin. In UK, Huddersfield is innovating like crazy, library impact data project, lemontree, uses of Summon API, information literacy etc. - aarontay
Aaron, Thanks for sharing thatlist! I'm adding Huddersfield to my list of places to keep abreast of! - RudĩϐЯaЯïan
Generally speaking, i avoid looking at the ARLs, and instead look at what smaller, user-focused libraries are doing.... - RudĩϐЯaЯïan
Um, so you're seriously saying that no ARL anywhere is user-focused? Might want to rephrase that.</walt> - RepoRat
I always wondered what the academic libraries I was most impressed with had in common besides awesome people. The obvious thing is size. If there are only 20-staff you can check in with everyone and change stuff quickly.... That is not to say the Harvards of the world are not doing interesting things... I wonder if there is some crude way of quantifying "innovation" in libraries (number... more... - aarontay
I'm saying that as a class, i prefer to look at what smaller, user-focused libraries do, and don't turn to ARLs for what's hot, great, and sexy in libraryland. ARLs may be user focused, but as a class, they don't appeal to me. I think I'm on record as saying that--I'd rather they own that they are completely different creatures (by choice), and that the rest of academic librarianship stop looking up to them - RudĩϐЯaЯïan
RR, that was quite a logical leap, from "generally speaking, i avoid them" to you reading that as i think no ARLs are student focused.... - RudĩϐЯaЯïan
to answer Andy's first question: i think that, if others have noticed that you are a great thinker and have been able to predict some pretty accurate and awesome things in libraryland, and because of those actions, others have bestowed the title "library futurist" or "technology trend spotter" upon you, then that is fine. because you earned it and are being recognized for your... more... - Christa
Aaron, i bet the first thing is that they all have an impetus to publish, widely. That's why we hear about most of them, they are loud about what they are researching. Folks without that impetus are quieter, but the really great things they do are pretty great,a nd often more sustained and supported in their institutional cultures. - RudĩϐЯaЯïan
Good to know Christa. I thought it was an accurate descriptor of the work i am doing, not a title awarded by others. - RudĩϐЯaЯïan
I am going to get in trouble if I say what I truly feel here -- especially in the context of *public* libraries and organizational trend-setting (along with individual trend-setters and trend-spotters). Word would get back to certain people that I said it. - Julian
What is it about the phrase that sets everyone off, other than it has been used by some pretty unsavory folks? I prefer to dismiss the folks whose work I don't resepect, rather than throw away a descriptor (widely used in other fields) just on the basis that so and so uses it? I know some pretty grounded folks who use it, and it does describe a whole class of research. What would you use instead to describe that 'genre' of work, on what roles libraries can take on in the changing environment? - RudĩϐЯaЯïan
(By comparison, it appears that public libraries -- as individual organizations -- are more likely than other types of libraries to more closely follow the major trend-spotters and trend-setters, and to make significant changes as a direct result of what certain other similar organizations do, and what certain "name" people say.) - Julian
Rudi, that's why I didn't say count number of papers. But from the outside if they don't get known somehow outside their organization, it's like a tree falling in a forest that no-one is around to hear. They have to be known somehow whether it is presenting, blogging, tweeting or even just postng on friendfeed LSW. - aarontay
it just sounds pretentious, Rudy, and I don't like it. The context in which it is most often used - in which the self-proclaimed futurist is rarely doing actual emerging trend research or implementing new paradigms for libraries - is doing it no favors, either. That's all there is to it, for me: It resonates of pretentious, empty bullshit. - Jenica
If I ever speak again, my bio will say that I'm a trendspotter of library trendspotters. Also, a library back-to-the-futurist. - Andy
Cool. See if you can get "neo-Trithemian" into the discourse. Because that would crack me up. - RepoRat
What about neo-Gorman? - Andy
hm, doesn't quite work as an adjective. neo-Gormanesque, perhaps? - RepoRat
Gladwell's "maven" and "connector" often describe the people running around describing themselves as futurists. I personally feel, few of them actually have much insight but they do keep themselves really uptodate with what everyone else is doing and share that, which is a worth-while thing to do. But that alone I feel doesn't mean you deserve the title futurist. - aarontay
I am a trendstriper. - Steele Lawman
I'm going to stay out of the rest of this thread, I think, except to approve the new tag RR used, including my recognition that I (sometimes) overuse the technique. Well played. - Walt Crawford

I didn't comment here right away because the tone of the conversation was getting to me and I couldn't really figure out why exactly. They breed. Like cats. And then you are either feeding a BUNCH of cats or you are that annoying person who asks everybody you see if they want a kitten. Check with your local shelter to see if they do low-cost spaying/neutering. - WebGoddess

The claws of our declawed cat just kept growing and growing and curling under, in these crazy spirals, and it had to have even more surgery. - Meg V. Meg
All cat experts I have seen/heard have said that declawing is a bad idea...the litter issue is one of the biggest problems. - Chris Topher
Start trimming claws now! They'll hate it for about 2-3 months (if Pye is typical) and then they get used to it. It takes me about 3 minutes per cat, standard nail clippers. I do it while sitting on side of the bathtub so i can just cat wrangle and not worry about sweeping up lots of claw clippings. - Hedgehog
If claws are an issue, look into claw caps. They are little covers that are slid into the claws. If the vet recommended declawing...I would find a new vet. - Chris Topher
I get about one claw per week on my cat trimmed, because she fights it so. I have been converted to the declawing is evil camp, but damn, trimming is a pain. I just get scratched a lot. - laura x
YES on spaying, NO on declawing. I trim my cats' claws every several weeks, and I start 'em young. They don't mind too much, and they get to keep their first toe joints. Standard nail clippers work fine, and you can get cat claw clippers too, which are easier to use (and not too pricey) Mine are smaller than the red ones here, but you get the idea: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product... - $tephanie•Cog$ciLibrarian

Delicious, Creamy Mashed Potatoes | The Pioneer Woman Cooks | Ree Drummond - http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking...
I've made them- yum - tab from BuddyFeed
I make a similar recipe, but what I bookmarked this for was her technique (mashing in a warm pan, what the steam does, etc). Make ahead is a good idea, one of the reasons I don't make mashed potatoes for company dinner is I already got hella much to do. - Starmama from FFHound(roid)!
i made them for our staff Thanksgiving potluck last week. i forgot to get cream cheese, but they were a hit anyway - i added more butter to compensate. :) . 5 pounds of potatoes - gone! i will definitely be doing it this way from now on. - Christa

.... FAIL. we had chilli cheese fries for dinner just last Monday. :) - Christa
Haven't been there in 10 years, but the best cheese fries were at Red Hot Lovers, in Ann Arbor. Waffle-cut fries. Big hunk of cheddar melted in the microwave to order. Best thing ever. - Betsy #TeamMonique

i love this place a block from my work, the Sultan's Kite. i had a rice bowl - 1/2 schwarma 1/2 tikka korma. there's always so much, that i only eat half and get to have the rest for dinner tonight. - Christa

What are some of your favorite comfort books; you know, like comfort foods?
The Little House books - particularly Farmer Boy and The Long Winter. Tamora Pierce - almost anything of hers other than the Trickster books - those I like, just not as much. The Ordinary Princess by MM Kaye (http://www.amazon.com/The-Ord... - if you don't know this one, read it :) ) - ellbeecee
Lord of the Rings, of course. When I was young, yes, also Little House. - maʀtha
Just about anything Bill Bryson. Also Bad Movies We Love and Not Since Carrie. - Chris Z.
Mary Renault's Ancient Greece books. First two Chalion books (Bujold). Tehanu. The Decameron. - RepoRat
Three Men in a Boat. The Prisoner of Zenda. - DJF from Android

The Discworld books...which is why the eight I own and haven't read yet are still sitting there. Dunno if there will be any more new ones. - Walt Crawford
Once and Future King, Among Others, Horse and His Boy, Mary Poppins. Bread and Jam for Frances. Ursula LeGuin. AS Byatt. Robertson Davies. Lots more. - Marianne
Ooh, yes to Bill Bryson (particularly, for me, A Walk in the Woods) - ellbeecee
Watership Down, Chronicles of Narnia, The Hobbit, Interview with the Vampire. - Christa
Little House, Donna Parker series, Anything by Ann Bannon. - Chelle Chelle Ro Ro
Tam Lin (the Pamela Dean retelling) - Catherine Pellegrino
Space opera. Weber's Honor Harrington series, Moon's Heris Serrano books, Bujold's Miles Vorkosigan. It used to be romance novels, but I find that space opera has the same reassuring pattern and style with far more engaging story. - Jenica
The Bone People by Keri Hulme. i read it every few years when i need to calm the fsck down. speaking of which - i do believe i will pull it off the shelf this weekend. - jambina
Oh yeah, also Always Coming Home by Ursula K. LeGuin. - Catherine Pellegrino
Sandry's Book or First Test (Tamora Pierce), Paul Bunyan tales, Brilliant (Marne Davis Kellogg), How To Be A Canadian (Will and Ian Ferguson), The Emperor of Scent (Chandler Burr), Beth Hilton: Model (Lee Wyndham), Raise the Titanic! (Clive Cussler). - MontglaneChess
I'm interpreting this as books I reread, so: Jane Eyre, The Curse of Chalion (Bujold), Heralds of Valdemar trilogy (Lackey), Echos of Honor (Weber), the Harper Hall trilogy (McCaffrey). Used to reread Pride and Prejudice regularly, but not so often lately. In the realm of books I will never get rid of: my Grandpoppy's Pogo collection and the poetry anthology that contains the poem my dad wrote for me. - Kirsten
Oh, yes, the Dean Tam Lin, too, and Franny and Zooey and early Douglas Coupland. Amy, I loved The Bone People, but haven't read it in years. - laura x
regency romances... like junk food.. the ones with the spunky heroines. - Christina Pikas
Oh, I forgot! The "Love Means..." series of gay romance by Andrew Gray. I stumbled on them by idly searching "gay amish porn." ;-p They are actually very sweet. And the Amish thread only lasts through the first few books. Also, now available on Overdrive! - Chelle Chelle Ro Ro
True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi and Jane Eyre - ~Courtney F
The Hero and the Crown! I am dancing with joy that laura x mentioned that. Also the Adventures of Alyx and We Who Are About To... Joanna Russ makes me feel energized. - Amandadon't
Anything from the Stephanie Plum series, Pride and Prejudice, Bridget Jones' Diary, Tricky Business, Big Trouble, the Harry Potter series, and Talking to Dragons - Soup in a TARDIS
Plus the Mars Trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson, I reread those periodically. - Amandadon't

Pride and Prejudice, Neal Stephenson, Two lumps cartoons, Cecilia and the enchanted chocolate pot, MAsH - Hedgehog from Android
Grimm's Fairy Tales, Fire and Hemlock, Howl's Moving Castle, an assortment of Agatha Christie novels, some Lovecraft, and I'm sure there are others that are just escaping my mind right now. - Katy S
for when I get too serious about work in academe: Richard Russo's Straight Man. For pure comfort - A Swiftly Tilting Planet and the Harry Potter books. - Jen
Weirdly, Octavia Butler is comfort fiction for me (weird because, um, bleak much?). - Marianne
Silverlock, by John Myers Myers. - DJF from Android
I feel like I'd be comfortable storm trapped in most of your homes--there would definitely be something good to read! Most of the YA fantasy already listed is in my reread pile, plus Bujold's Chalion, Patricia Briggs, Agatha Christie, and Dorothy Sayers. - Rebecca Hedreen
Oh, God, I love Richard Russo. Especially Straight Man. - laura x from BuddyFeed
Yes. Straight Man is wonderful. A few years ago, I went on an "academic fiction" kick: Straight Man, Moo, and Pnin. - DJF from Android
Oh, Russo--Bridge of Sighs broke my heart and kept a piece of it. His memoir is next on my list. Comfort books to me are mysteries, but not particular titles to read and re-read. I can devour a popular mystery in a couple of hours when I need a little time to de-stress and occupy my overactive brains. - kaijsa
(Marianne, you're not weird. Rosemary's Baby is comfort film for me: strangely soothing.) (second aside: this thread illustrates the fringe benefit of being friends with librarians and devoted readers. Constant Readers Advisory!) - kaijsa
I'm not a Russo fan, but that's probably mostly because he was The Big Deal at my undergrad when I was there b/c that was when Nobody's Fool was turned into a movie. I should probably give his stuff a fair try sometime. - ellbeecee
LOTR; Zelazny's Nine Princes in Amber series; LeGuin's Wizard of Earthsea - Marge LW

Cake Pan With a Call Number - Poster from Midwest Medical Library Association conference by Marilyn Pitzen
"Cake Pan with a Call Number Author: Marilyn Pitzen, Learning Resource Center, Mayo Clinic Libraries For as long as I can remember I have decorated cakes. I was a self taught; learn from your mistakes decorator. Somewhere along the road it was decided that I should try to make money doing this so I started charging for cake orders which could be anything from a simple birthday cake to the fancier wedding cakes. Throw in hundreds of sheet cakes and after 10 years it became too much. I still liked decorating but I wanted to go back to the days when it was just a fun hobby. Being a frequent library user and actually using the library as a place for people to pick up their cakes, I told the librarian that I was not going to take orders anymore and that I would just bring all the pans into the library and let the people bake their own. She thought I was joking. She couldn’t believe I would donate 50 some pans but I packed them up and she hung them on the library walls. It was a win-win... more... - maʀtha
She gave out teeny cupcakes. - maʀtha
:) The library just to the north of us has a cake pan lending collection: http://www.northlibertylibrary.org/service... - laura x

What helps make a job satisfying for you? E.g., work hours, manager's style, relationships, colleagues, salary, etc.? What helps balance out the not-so-great parts inherent to any job?
Freedom to act. - aarontay
What Aaron said. Give me room to do what I need to do. I hate being hovered over and smothered. Trust in me that I can do the work and best believe I'll deliver. - Derrick
Freedom. Hard problems/ interesting work with resources and support - Christina Pikas from iPhone
What they all said. Freedom and trust. Then just get out of my way. - LB: #TeamMonique
The chance to learn and do new and useful things. The occasional "yes" to a crazy idea (the more often the "yes," the better). The autonomy to let go of what isn't working in order to work toward something better. Trust from on high. Resources when I ask for them (with the understanding that I don't ask much, never have). Patience with my eccentricities. - RepoRat
A sense of actually doing something useful. Colleagues I don't want to murder with a stick. - Soup in a TARDIS

What others have said - trust, freedom, communication. but then after all of that, acknowledgement and appreciation of the work I've done. micromanaging is a huge no-no. but the opposite, ignoring me, is just as bad. - Christa
For satisfaction I need #1: managers supporting me with my crazy ideas; #2: managers supporting my colleagues with their crazy ideas. For tolerability, moral support from colleagues works wonders. - Deborah Fitchett
I agree with pretty much everything above. I think Christa's post resonates the most for me personally. Also, support for my big ideas. Also, patience with my idiosyncracies. - maʀtha
