Peter receives a copy of The Snowy Day from BOTH my elementary school librarians, who came to pay us a visit last week. (Both now work part time in the good local bookstore; one also works part time at my library.)

I love that book. Used to read it to Waif all the time, like me mudder read it to me. *sniff* - MoTO Bott

Every little boy named Peter should have this book in his life :) I loved it, Jayden loved it...it's a perfect lil kid book :) - Starmama from FFHound(roid)!

Heh. I was thinking "Wow, Peter looks so much like Catherine's J in that last picture..." :D - Marianne
But Peter has the same hat! - laura x
Does Peter's hat have ears? Because J's had ears. It's all about the ears, man. - Catherine Pellegrino
No! So sad. :( but his bear suit has ears. - laura x from iPhone
The cat is letting you know that you're still his (hers?), I take it. - MoTO Bott

I'm using Google Chrome on a Mac, and I can only hear the music and see the final panel. I can't see the animation. I wonder what's broken? I tried Safari instead and it won't play at all. What gives? I had to look here instead: http://www.youtube.com/watch... I'm pretty annoyed that something seems to be broken... not sure what. (Once I finally saw it, yes, it's cute.) - Kamilah Reed (K. Gill)

Just like there are Rules of the Internet, today I feel like there are Rules of the Online Librarian World. Such as:
There will always be someone who dislikes your blog post and will tell you so. No exceptions. - Andy
Everything in the keynote will be tweeted. - Andy
Respect for diversity will be proclaimed, but respect for diversity of opinion will not be practiced. - Andy
The Annoyed Librarian is an internet troll collecting a paycheck. Yes, they are. - Andy
Serious issues can and will be discussed right up until you get the first reply. - Andy
Intellectual freedom conversations are really about porn. - Andy
Ranganathan memes are always hilarious. - Andy
If you mention someone by name, expect pearl-clutchers to call you out on -- not what you said, but that you DARED TO NAME SOMEONE. - RepoRat
"They" as in plural, right? - Julian
The worse the library music video, the more it will be shared and loved. No exceptions. - Andy
Ranganathan memes? Where? I want to see that! - Dominique Papin
Ranganathan porn, on the other hand, is a non-starter. - Your Neighbor Steve
"Ranganathan has a posse" has a whole new meaning. - Andy
OH POSSE WITH AN O GOT IT MY BAD - Your Neighbor Steve
This is what happens when I can't DM people. - Andy
Blog topics, like the seasons, come in cycles. Posts about stereotypes, professional standards, generational differences, the librarian job market, the American Library Association, and "what we didn't earn in library school" are inevitable and inescapable. (fixd as per RR, martha) - Andy
(as well as "what we didn't learn in library school") - RepoRat
You either love that people find librarians to be sexy or hate that it objectifies the individual. No middle ground. Choose wisely. - Andy
"Rockstar" is a more complicated compliment/insult than you might think it is. - Your Neighbor Steve
^^^ It's the best/worst thing you can call someone! - Andy
Any pro-library article will be shared ad naseum, regardless of actual content. - Andy
You either love articles about hipster librarians or hate that it's yet another librarian stereotype. - Betsy
Change is the best thing ever! Except when it's not. - ellbeecee
Don't do this: "Why, oh why, can't I get a job?" *whine* Don't do this, EVER. - marthalib
added to the blog topic cycle rule, martha - Andy
Get annoyed when people think that all you do is read all day long, then give out book awards en masse. - Andy
just when you are feeling optimistic about the profession and where we are going , you will receive another "please unsubscribe me from this listserv" email that has been sent to the entire list. - Kathryn says love n peace
If you are still reading library listservs, these unsub emails are nature's way of telling you to just say no and stop - Kathryn says love n peace
Make blogs posts complaining bitterly about library vendors, then go back to buying their stuff. - Andy
For every librarian call to action, there will be someone who will tell you how it won't work, won't last, or is otherwise unfeasible, even if that call to action is to read the rest of this sentence right now. No exceptions. EVER. - Andy
Modified Rule 34. If it exists, there is porn of it. And someone is probably watching it at a library. No exceptions. - Andy
(I'm so going to make this up into an image file. I'll post it when it's ready) - Andy
Librarians will argue about anything and everything until the issue has been thoroughly beaten to death. It's not our fault, we just can't help ourselves. This comes from our vast experience arguing with faculty, students, administration, executives, and the general public. And each other. - Andy
The internet is for Google, lolcats, and second guessing oneself. In that order. - Andy
Every second guess deserves a third guess from someone who is completely unknowledgeable about content or context. No exceptions. And they may or may not be right. - Andy
Any online copyright conversations are over the moment someone declares that they are not "the copyright police". - Andy
Andy, you need a committee to plan this image file of yours. 'cause there's always a committee. - Betsy
Riffing off that: as soon as a library committee is discussing your blog, you're in trouble. - RepoRat
Unless you don't work at that library. - Andy
heh, right. I shoulda added "at YPOW." Though don't underestimate the librarian grapevine... - RepoRat
We should form a taskforce to investigate the feasibility of creating that committee. - Just Joe
According to the internet, public librarians are really just porn pushers, school librarians are just failed teachers, academic librarians are just wannabe scholars, special librarians just couldn't cut it in the regular librarian job market, and those who teach library science graduate programs are just failures. - Andy
Don't forget that professors of practice in library schools are failed librarians! *resembles that remark* - RepoRat
Ah yes. "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach." Fixd. - Andy
BINGO. - RepoRat
Librarians should embrace social media as a means to connect to their community and engage in conversations in new spaces. But using it it to promote themselves is VERBOTEN. - Andy
There are only happy librarian drunks online. No exceptions. - Andy
Complaining about patron behavior is inevitable and unavoidable. The pettiness of the complaining is directly related to the frequency of complaints. - Andy
When in doubt, blame the ALA. - Andy
Anonymous posting is either good or bad with no middle ground whatsoever. Choose a side. - Andy
When I choose a side, do I have to put my name on it? My real name? But everybody knows me as xxZyffie! - Betsy
(Damn, I actually kinda sorta like xxZyffie for a name.) - Betsy
Violent unending sociopathic rage is always one vendor login away. - Andy
Most librarian blogs are terrible. Even more library blogs are worse. - Andy

drank all your tequila? "Damn near." - barbara fister
That is beautiful. - Your Neighbor Steve
Overanalysis alert: I love this in part because it's stereotype antidote without all the baggage that often comes along with explicit attempts to refute stereotypes about librarians. It's just "hey, check it, librarians are REAL PEOPLE," and I'm okay with that. - RepoRat
I suspect that the only tequila left was the cheap crap. - DJF
Also, the folks at the Dallas Observer are wondering why their hit counts are through the roof and visitors are from all over North America. - DJF
And Mongolia, too... http://twitter.com/jbegzsu... - awd
Huh, Google Translate doesn't do Mongolian. That's a nuisance, because it means all I can understand of his latest blogpost is "сайн байна уу"; it would have been interesting to find out more about Mongolian libraries, since when I was there and tried to wander into the national library all I found was empty corridors and locked offices. (Possibly I wasn't supposed to be there. It was... more... - Deborah Fitchett
so is that "where's the toilet" or "I'll have a beer"? - DJF
WE NEED TO GO BACK AND FINISH OFF THE TEQUILA. - Andy
Alas, I've forgotten those, it's just "Hi/How are you?". I did try some airag while I was there. The first sip was interestingly fizzy, reminiscent of yoghurt. The second sip was more reminiscent of sour milk and it took some effort to avoid violating social norms by regurgitating it onto someone's foot. - Deborah Fitchett
This just makes me remember the tequila bar in San Diego! - RudĩϐЯaЯïan
Also, though, we go by the thousands to at least two cities a year, and every time, the restaurantuers are all stunned that librarians drink them dry. What does it take to change a stereotype? LIBRARIANS WILL DRINK YER LIKKER!!!! - RudĩϐЯaЯïan
Deborah, perhaps you could explain that puking on people's feet is a New Zealand tradition to honor one's hosts. (That's quite a vision of their national library, there. Not puke/feet but empty corridors and locked offices. Plus one brave New Zealander.) - barbara fister

Publicizing SOPA stuff to your staff: Given that Wikipedia is planning to go dark for 24 hours on Wednesday, it occurred to me that it might be good to warn our library staff about it, on the theory that not everyone is as obsessed with internet policy as I am. Here's the email I sent out:
This is just an FYI as it occurred to me that we may well get patron questions or complaints on Wednesday--my apologies if you already know all about this: - laura x
Wikipedia (along with a number of other sites) is planning to shut itself down for 24 hours this Wednesday as a protest against SOPA, the Stop Online Piracy Act. SOPA (the Senate version is called PIPA, the Protect IP Act). As you might guess, the idea of the act is to stop piracy by making it possible to "blacklist" or shut down sites that host pirated content. - laura x
Critics--including a lot of major websites--say that the effect will instead be to cripple them, and cripple access to information in general, because the law would mean any site with anything on it that might possible be piracy could be shut down entirely (so, like one pirated video on YouTube would mean YouTube would disappear). - laura x
I imagine Wikipedia and other sites participating in the protest will have explanatory statements on their sites, but I am also guessing we may get patron questions, so it's probably best to be prepared. - laura x
I then linked to this article from MSNBC: http://redtape.msnbc.msn.com/_news... and blog posts from the Swiss Army Librarian: http://www.swissarmylibrarian.net/2012... and Jessamyn: http://www.librarian.net/stax... - laura x
I put something on our internal blog this morning, and we may be putting a copy on our for-users blog as well. - Deborah Fitchett
Laura, this is fabulous. Would you mind if I copied much of your language wholesale (with appropriate credit, of course) in an email to the librarians at MPOW? - Catherine Pellegrino
Help yourself! I am officially releasing all the above wording into the public domain. Copy, adapt, and promulgate as you wish! - laura x
Thanks, Laura. I'm in the closed library today working on stuff and was just thinking I should warn my colleagues. - Kaijsa
Awesome. Thank you! - Catherine Pellegrino from iPod
This is great, I think we may do something with some of your wording to explain our view as web media producers, as well. - joey
Thanks, Laura. I'm posting this to our intranet blog. Good idea! - Jason P
Oh, look, stuff to help me explain this to my students. thanks! - marthalib
And for an extraterritorial perspective, "Why Canadians should participate in the SOPA/PIPA protest": http://www.michaelgeist.ca/content... - DJF
According to SOPA, all IP addressed issued by an organization based in the USA are deemed to be "domestic". The only problem is that IP addresses are not issued nationally, but regionally. The USA-based organization that issues IP addresses, issues addresses for the USA, Canada, and most of the Caribbean. So, the Canadian FEDERAL GOVERNMENT network will be deemed to be a domestic USA website. - DJF
I am aaaaaaaall eyerolled out. FFS, Congress. - RepoRat
well, they are rather proud of the fact that they don't know how this shit works. - DJF
Thanks, Laura. You just made it super easy for me to get a post up quickly on our reference blog just now. http://blsciblogs.baruch.cuny.edu/newmanr... - Stephen Francoeur
Is there a page somewhere with a good list of participating sites? - Rachel Walden

thanks for checking, though! - Rachel Walden
Alright, staff notified by email that they may get questions about this, with a couple of background links. Note posted to our FB and Twitter that people should not expect to use Wikipedia tomorrow, and will also be unable to get their LOLcats, reddit, or failblog fix. - Rachel Walden

Also: http://americancensorship.org/ is the site that I've been following for info. Good infographic, good video, etc. - Jason Griffey
Thanks so much Laura! Have just sent out to all libfolks. - RudĩϐЯaЯïan
Thank you, Laura! I sent out the links to the all-campus faculty listserv on this, and following a cue from @LibraryStuff, added "Wouldn't this be a great time to remind your students about the library?" (It's Finals Week for our J-Term right now.) - Librarienne
Working on a post for our library blog now and sending an internal e-mail for staff. Thank you for facilitating this. (Now I hope I do not get in hot water over this. Please, don't ask-- not publicly at least). - Angel R. Rivera
For what is worth, here is the post I made for our library blog. I tried to combine the best of so much good thinking out there. If it helps anybody out, cool. And yea, this can be a good time to remind our students of other resources, even as we make them aware of issues like SOPA. I love the lazyweb. - laura x
Also, done! I think I'm too lazy to do anything about my main site, but most of the traffic I get goes to the blogs anyway, so I think I'm good. - laura x
Thanks for the thread, including the specific name. After looking at the first few responses for SOPA, I'd decided not to add one: On principle, I will NOT install something that redirects people to a site I don't control or thoroughly understand--I'd bet at least one such site will be malware. But Go Dark doesn't do that, so I've installed it. (I think it's last month's fight and SOPA is DOA, but I'll play along...) - Walt Crawford
LibraryStuff will not go black tomorrow. Not that anyone looks at my blog anyway... - Steven M. Cohen

You've chosen quite the homeopathic cure for your allergies as well. - Andy
if it was homeopathic, she'd be holding an invisible cat. - DJF
For years everyone has tried to tell me that I'm allergic to my cats. Even when I tell them that the allergist tested me for that (among a lot of other things) and it is not the cats, they don't want to believe me. Do you get the lectures where people tell you that you have allergies b/c your parents raised you in too sterile of an environment? I do all of the time. I love telling those people that I grew up on a farm and played in the dirt all of the time. - Katy S
I don't understand this at all. Why would ANYBODY tell me what I'm allergic to? As if I don't know already? Are they an allergist? Do they have a special innate visual allergy diagnostic power? they should be CHARGING people for that service! And don't fucking tell me what to eat! - DJF

i dont understand open access as a personal issue. Isnt it more reprehensible to take home vendor swag? or are employees expected to turn over those "gifts" to their bosses? - barbara fister from iPhone
Re: Bell: Um, wow. - laura x
For librarians who work at universities, like Mr Bell and his staff, how about, you know, "academic freedom"? - DJF
What Laura said. Though I think Susan S. and John Dupuis have ably addressed the relevant points. - Catherine Pellegrino
I sort of turn over vendor swag to my employer in that the ballpoint pens and USB drives supplement our Old Mother Hubbard stationery cupboard. I eat the jellybeans all myself though. And I don't consider talking to vendors about DRM or open access or whatever to be "personal advocacy" seriously what? - Deborah Fitchett
"How DARE you have, much less act on, a professional opinion that's different from OURS?" Yeah, btdt, it's a lot of why I don't work for an academic library any more. WTF does Bell think prof dev IS, srsly? - RepoRat
whoa Bell. whoa. WHOA. EDIT after Steven's comments below: that dude might hate being my boss. - jambina
RR- Probably What We Done Good and sitting on committees - Pete
probably. BAH. - RepoRat
I mean, I would check with bosses before I spoke; but only to make clear I'd be speaking on my behalf. In the law librarian world we have a vendor liaison committee, so I guess if something like this hit here they would make some of the running. - Pete
Am I the only one reading Bell's comment as a pitch-perfect example of concern trolling? - Catherine Pellegrino
I think my response may have been a wee bit impolitic. But less so than was my initial instinct. - RudĩϐЯaЯïan
Catherine, yes -- and I would add that any admin who gigs a professional for exercising voice on matters important to the profession prolly oughta be turfed out. (Circumstances alter cases, to be sure. But this one? Shee-it.) - RepoRat
(what's concern trolling?) - RudĩϐЯaЯïan
@Rudi I like this definition http://www.urbandictionary.com/define... - Hedgehog
Oh. Yeah. That's exactly what he did! - RudĩϐЯaЯïan
Yep. With a side order of "chilling effect." - Catherine Pellegrino
fuck that noise. - Jenica
At least he didn't sign as VP elect, ACRL..... - RudĩϐЯaЯïan
Hey guys. Help me out here. I'm not sure what you mean by concern trolling either. I'm presenting a scenario and asking a question b/c i'm interested in knowing what Andy's readers - and Andy - think about the issue. Don't interpret the question to mean that I wouldn't support librarians who want to take Andy's advice. As I said in the question, you can certainly view this as an... more... - steven bell
"VP elect, ACRL" You're kidding, right? Please tell me you're kidding. Oh, yeah, I guess you're not: http://americanlibrariesmagazine.org/news... - John Dupuis
OMG ACRL WHAT. - RepoRat
Steven, when you ask a question of "is this action ethical?" and then follow it up with a comment "hey, don't interpret the question to think I don't support this action, I'm just asking a question" then you are "concern trolling". The fact that you associate this professional work with "personal advocacy" is very troubling - copystar
Steven, teh concern troll question has been answered. To address the content of your comment: If you truly don't support the position you're outlining, you could have asked "What would you suggest librarians do if faced with administrations that don't support such advocacy on what is considered professional time?" As written, up to and including your word choice and tone, it is clear to... more... - Jenica
Steven, I guess I fail to understand how a decent manager could object to having a well-informed, articulate staff member advocating on behalf of the profession out their representing his or her institution. Do you also encourage your employees not to drink or do karaoke at conferences? Not to wear "She Blinded Me With Library Science" tshirts, lest they look less than professional?... more... - laura x
Way Laura X explained it sounds pretty good to me. - Angel R. Rivera
Thank you Jenica. I appreciate the way you responded. And I want to make clear that as an administrator, I do support librarians who want to use conference time for advocacy activity. Clearly I didn't word my comment in the most effective way.I think most of the folks here know that I'm a strong supporter of academic librarians who advocate on behalf of their libraries and the... more... - steven bell
Ithaka just broke with AAP's stance on RWA. Move 'em to the orchids column. http://poynder.blogspot.com/2012... - RepoRat
Steven, you ask a bunch of questions in your original comment, like, "Would you spend an hour or two at your desk calling vendors to have a chat about legislation? Probably not. Is it acceptable practice at a conference?" Without meaning to unduly belabor the point, if you truly were "a strong supporter of academic librarians who advocate on behalf of their libraries and the... more... - John Dupuis
fwiw, my boss knows that I contact vendors to advocate positions that I think will help MPOW and really scholarly communication and information retrieval in general. I feel that I've been very successful in some areas - eta - yes, i do this on work time. - Christina Pikas
I'm expected by my dean, AD, dept. head, and colleagues to treat my time at conferences as a mix of personal and professional time. I'm also expected to advocate for positions I feel strongly about, and my faculty is even trying to figure out where we should stand as a group on issues of open access. Nobody thinks an official line means we can't have our own professional opinions,... more... - Kaijsa
THE MAP!!! I love the map too much. Thank you so much for doing this (even though I won't be there to take advantage of it). - Meg VMeg
I'm calling Bell's supervisor to see if it's OK if Steven spends his time on LSW with us mutherfukers. - Your Neighbor Steve
I will make a short post tonight to remind people that they can play the home edition of the game and call/email their vendors to ask how they feel about it. - Andy
Yeah, this just seems more fun than calling/emailing. Plus: map. - Meg VMeg
To answer the questions Steven has raised, I think it actually speaks more towards the work culture that has developed over the last couple of decades. It's the idea put forth that basically sounds like "Hey, we expect you to take work home with you, but don't you dare do any personal stuff while you're at the office". In other words, the work life can invade the personal life, but not... more... - Andy
I think the scariest thing about the points that Steven raises in his initial comment is that there is someone out there right now who is ACTUALLY hearing that from their boss. I don't doubt for a minute that there is probably some Grade A Number One Arsehole who is telling their subordinates, "We pay for your trip so we own you while you're there." I hope that in raising his points Steven and the responses that people have given him that those workers have some ammo against such a boss. - Andy
In other thoughts, I think a color coded issues map might be in order for Annual as well. This will be a good dry run for that. :D - Andy
hey, how come the ACRL hasn't issued a statement about SOPA and the Research Works Act yet? http://www.ala.org/acrl... - copystar
So Andy has done heroic work in identifying the Vendors of Concern and creating the Map of Awkward Librarianly Confrontation. Has anyone started work on the Instrument of Our Displeasure? I'd made some suggestions a while back about ways to try and be nice to vendor grunts while trying to get the message to vendor fatcats and educate our fellow librarians. Iris and I were thinking about getting to work on that, but if someone else has started, we wouldn't want to duplicate that. - Your Neighbor Steve
No plans I'm aware of. We're anarchical here -- go for it. :) - RepoRat
While I link to other people's stuff in my post, I think a post outlining talking points and essential background information would be a healthy companion piece to the color coded map. - Andy
Fair enough John. I accept that critique. I can see how folks would interpret my comment and come to the conclusions they did -which is not quite what i intended. Even ACRL leaders can occasionally make a bad call. I always try to do good things for folks on this list and others and for the profession in general, and that's what I'm going to keep doing - and being mindful about my... more... - steven bell
Steven, I'm glad to know that you meant something different from what I read in the comment. And as for SOPA and RWA, is there any way you could encourage ACRL to take a position on those issues that would complement the work coming out of the Library Copyright Alliance? They are so fundamentally related to college and research libraries that it seems like more powerful voices would be better than fewer. - lris
Penn State just peeled off the onion for the sake of an orchid. :) http://poynder.blogspot.com/2012... At this rate you'll have to redraw the map! - RepoRat
I dont think Penn State is on the map. Ithaka, which owns JSTOR and Portico, is. The blog post is easier to update than the map, but I might just leave the map as is so people talk to JSTOR and can thank them for their stance. - Andy
I missed this due to being at CES, where I was representing libraries and drinking beer with Makers. But I was drinking said beer _very professionally_. - Jason Griffey
Also: I told Andy this privately, but: huzzah and awesome work. This is really, really great stuff. Steve, I _really_ want to work on the Instrument of Our Displeasure, but I'm killed right now. Dead with deadlines, and just can't. But I want to help with it in some way, aside from my plan to try and talk with Vendors on video about their thoughts. - Jason Griffey
I'd like to thank everyone for their compliments. It really made my day and that blog post really was supported by the people here on FF. I couldn't have done it without all of you and considering the overwhelming response to it, I am thankful for all the help I received. - Andy
All deserved, Andy - and perhaps if more orgs/publishers disavow this legislation and have booths at MW, they could be congratulated and thanked. Congratulatory flashmobs via Twitter? And we could take all of their publicity material with good grace and make the booth workers feel good? (I say "we though I won't be there.) - barbara fister

I <3 their Cinnamon Spice tea. It is one of my favorite teas - truly sweet without any sweetener. I've converted non-tea drinkers with that one. - Jennifer Dittrich
