For most situations, I prefer the iPhone. I get really bad reception with my rock.. and it's hard to check my stocks and get directions to the pizza joint with it. But it works great as a makeshift mallet for pounding tent stakes when camping! My iPhone's a little to fragile for that. At least my iPhone can double as a flashlight in a pinch!

I think a lot/most of the people here in the South, regardless of color, call it supper. I grew up in GA and "Dinner" for me has always had two meanings, depending on the day. Mon - Sat, dinner is the same as supper. On Sunday, dinner is the after-church meal, which on other days is called lunch.
- Joey Gibson
i say "dinner" and i'm so white that you can read a book by the light of my inner arms. and i grew up in Texas. so much for regionalisms!
- Joe Silence is not dead
sup - take (drink or liquid food) by sips or spoonfuls : she supped up her soup delightedly like a pilgrim would.
- Christopher Harley
I used to hear it all the time in Alabama. Lunch was "dinner" and dinner was "supper".
- Steven Perez
Pop vs. Soda is AWESOME! Our daughter says "soda" because her parents say it. Her grandparents (all four Alabamians) uniformly FLIP. OUT. whenever they hear it: "Don't teach that baby to say soda! Tell her to say "Coke" like a normal person!"
- Daniel J. Pritchett
i dont think i have ever said supper and I am white :)
- (jeff)isageek
I say dîner but that's frog speak and pop means the music
- sofarsoShawn
I don't think anyone in my immediate (very northern European) family says supper. Always dinner.
- Jennifer Dittrich
I thought it was a midwest thing - in CA we say dinner = late night meal & soda = pop
- anna sauce
No we say Dinner. Supper sounds like something someone said in the 60's
- Matt Ruiz
Regional thing, I think. In the south it's pretty common to say supper for the evening meal, regardless of race. Sunday Dinner is almost always the noontime meal.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I only use dinner for special occasions, like Thanksgiving or eating out in a nice restaurant.
- John (a.k.a. dendroica)
I have never heard anyone say "supper" in the Detroit metro area or in Northern CA where I live now and I am white.
- Joe
I get confused when people say dinner, I find it ambiguous. So I say lunch and supper. (from STL) I have heard dinner used for both though.
- Ryan
Not sure about the racial component in this post. I kind of thought supper was a generally country and/or Southern kind of thing to say, said by both blacks and whites, but mostly ones from rural areas or with close rural ties. I associate it with calling lunch "dinner" (which I heard from one of my babysitters when I was a kid. She was black. Therefore dinner for her was supper.)
- Kamilah Gill
supper sounds like a word orphans used back during the great depression
- Cee Bee
To put it into context, around here at least 'supper' is when you eat your evening meal as a matter of maintenance: eating simply because it's time to eat. 'Dinner' connotes something that involves more preparations, guests, the 'good china', an event, or going out. So tonight I'll eat supper at home. At Christmas and Thanksgiving we have dinner. Dave and I will have a nice dinner out...

- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
to me you have to get dressed up for dinner. supper is casual.
- MicahBear78
Off the top of my head, I would have guessed that it was the other way around, that supper was something fancy. Interesting.
- Kamilah Gill
MichahBear, that's a pretty easy way to tell the difference. Typically one wears one's "Sunday Best" to Sunday dinner (since it's typically after church; the whole getting-dressed-for-church thing is a whole 'nother discussion).
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
+5 tina. although my (black, southern) grandma called our midday meal "supper" even though it was lunch. we ate a smaller meal in the evening. that could just be specific to my grandma.
- tiffany
b/c supper and dinner are reversed in French/English and Montréal is bilingual, I can never remember the difference so I'll say, "what's for supper?" then people will say you mean dinner if I get it wrong 50/50, but all I really mean is "food - when? want."
- sofarsoShawn
I agree 100% with Tina (noting time, date, weather conditions and apparel)
- MVB (Grinch of FF)
Breakfast/lunch/dinner except if your big meal is at noon- then it's breakfast/dinner/supper. You may be invited to a "light supper' but never a "light dinner,"
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
LOL, this thread is ripe with offensiveness
- Bwana ☠
Oh yeah, I say supper, so I guess I'm a pilgrim orphan who's on leave it to beaver \o/
- Bwana ☠
Supper happens earlier than dinner, like if you meet someone in the afternoon, you can invite them over for supper, which you would eat at like 3pm. Hence, the ridiculousness of supper. Dinner please!
- Andru Edwards
Grew up in NJ we used Supper, Dinner was only used Sunday when you ate the main meal in the middle of the day or on holidays. Otherwise it was breakfast, lunch and suppertime
- Kim Landwehr
Born in NY state but spent most of my life in So. Calif.....we always called it "supper" which implied an evening meal. "Dinner" could be in the afternoon or later. "Supper" was also casual...."dinner" was going out, or Sunday, or a holiday meal.

"Floating belly up in the Pacific, this is the unbelievable sight of the largest animal ever to have lived on Earth - killed by a passing ship. The body of the giant blue whale was found by researchers from Oregon State University in the Santa Barbara Channel off the coast of California. They came across the carcass while out in their small research vessel, the Pacific Storm, operated by the university's Marine Mammal Institute. Researchers believe the whale may have been hit by a cargo ship in the busy shipping lanes coming out of the city of Los Angeles. Staff at the university have not yet been reached for comment. The picture first appeared on National Geographic's website. Water is churned up around the body of the whale as the research vessel fights to get closer to it, while seagulls perch on its upturned belly. The Pacific Storm is 84 feet, or just over 25 metres long - meaning this whale must be roughly 22 metres long. The image is so astonishing it almost looks unreal. The...

from "How to Pick up Women Using Science Fiction Plot Devices" by J. J. Abrams? i personally prefer the version where you are naked and have a nosebleed -- the whole tanning thing doesn't work as well for me -- and you explain that the two of you are in a relationship in the future, but that you screwed it up horribly and went back in time to make things right. bonus points for repeating "we have to go back!" and being able to weep on cue a la Jack Shepherd from "Lost."

I thought I’d put out a post after I received my first earnings report (which I received today) from stock photography agency Getty Images. I signed up to have Getty represent 60 of my individual photographs as part of the recent deal between Getty Images and Flickr. The Flickr/Getty arrangement is by invite only and Getty initially selected about 90 of my images. I listed all of the images that they asked for that didn’t need model releases (which was 60). Most of the other images that they wanted where model releases were needed are of me or my family, so I’ll probably add those to the collection as well in the next few weeks. So in my first month of production with Getty I sold two of the 60 images. Those two images totaled $689.97 in fees to Getty and $138.00 (my 20% cut) to me. At the same time that I’d signed up with Getty I also listed 24,917 of my photos with the upstart stock photography agency Clustershot. Clustershot, started by Canadian web development company silverorange...

Pretty dismal return for both sites. I wouldn't have expected much from Clustershot, but with 25K photos on their site, you would think if they had any traffic, there would have been some sales. My guess is Clustershot has little to no real traffic from people looking to buy photos.
- Jeff P. Henderson
thanks for sharing this Thomas. its seems like once again, Getty wins out. Clustershot looks interesting but unless they have some inside tracks to advertisers/buyers they will end up just like the others (ie Photoshelter and the like). I do wish them luck though. I'd like to see more companies like this spring up and be successful.
- Carlos Ayala
Personally, I think in the long run ClusterShot or a company like them will have a chance. Photrade is another one out there with high photographer payouts. If the internet is good at anything, it's good at squeezing out the middleman, which today is Getty. Then again, one could make a pretty strong case that the value provided to the photographer by Getty is worth something. Maybe not 80% of the profit, but something more than 12% for sure.

ClusterShot responded via email to this post and I added their email to this article as an update as well.

Thanks for sharing Thomas! I was just looking at ClusterShot (literally a few hours before this post) and their site looks very interesting, however, I found it extremely slow to work with. This is a common problem with the new photo selling sites. I call it the pizza delivery problem. Where I grew up there were dozens of pizza places within a few miles of my house. Yikes! While I'm happy that you have a way of selling your work, is 20% common? Why so much overhead?
- jcunwired
that's the market right now jcunwired. At least at Getty. 20% is also what they pay at iStockphoto. Right now they are the market leader. It would be interesting to see Corbis come out with a similar program to throw a little competition in there. I'm sure a lot of this will be changing in the next few years. I've always thought 20% feels low, even though Getty brings an awful lot to the table and not just in terms of their existing buyers. Their service is quite strong and professional as well.

40:41 -- actual VISUAL demo. You guys, this is EXCITING. omg.

49ish = reason Chrome's multi processing via tabs is relevant. We're nearing the days when apps are going to be cross compiled. (phone - desktop - different mobile platforms) 50:17ish -- with this guy's methods, it may be cross complied for Android. WOW. You guys, this is history in making!!
- Mona Nomura
It is definitely a great hack. Thanks for sharing! I'd never seen you so excited by hard core tech. :-)

This is seriously history in making. It's not just about this particular hack, or the fact it's iPhone related. We're seeing, before our eyes, how Chrome and Webkit's multi processing is relevant. Code is advancing, apps are going to be able to run across multiple platforms, the market is shifting... I mean this is EXCITING times!

OK, Mona, you've done it and got me so I can't sleep (or maybe it was Marilyn, LOL) I've downloaded the code (CVS repository & instructions here: http://sourceforge.net/cvs...) I'm gonna play with this now.

Omg PJ: upload a screen cast if you come up wiht something fun!!! Or maybe I'll push my luck and ask for an emulator... ha!
- Mona Nomura
Is your iPhone jailbroken? There are GBA, PSX, SNES and NES emulators available for jailbroken iPhones and iPod Touch.
- Dread Pirate PJ
Actually, I think it's just GB and GBC, not GBA yet.

Thanks for the tip, Mona... this opens up possibilities! "I'm Richard, not Rich" perhaps ;)

and... Apple band all cross compiled apps from the store. (until they come up with their own official tool chain in a year or two). :(
- Jon Price
um. i bought my iphone strictly because there were no Java apps. Java sucks.
- Joshua Schnell
You don't want Google street view on your phone, Joshua? And I'm more amazed this guy actually found a way to cross compile Java specifically for iPhone apps. Sure, there are many languages that cross compile (python, perl. etc) but since there's no standard protocol, Java is the one that everyone resorts to. And Ruby... I don't know enough about it to spew my two cents.
- Mona Nomura
LOL at Joshua, since GWT turns Java into Javascript... may as well say "ajax sucks" or "google sucks"
