My brothers and I tried sun stenciling ourselves when we were kids. Despite our pale Irish skin cancer-prone complexions.
- Spidra Webster
If you're someone who tans well and you can keep the paper close to your skin, it turns out well. If you're like me and go directly from pale to pink, which then fades to more freckles, not so much.
- Spidra Webster
No way it would turn out that well defined.
- Brad Connell
Hao, this is awesome! Remember how people were saying in the FF Feedback room, how they'd like services to be linked, but not important the feeds? THIS is the temp. solution. WOW. Are you going to implement a way to filter individually?
- Mona Nomura
It doesn't actually do that, Mona. If your account is in Friendfeed, it goes into your feed. Hao Chen is merely making it easier to get the URLs from FriendFeed.
- Mark Trapp
Looks great. I guess I'll have to look into Social Graph API a bit deeper. It's so much faster than FF API for network data.
- Benedikt Koehler
Oops, I meant UN-LINK services so it'll stop pulling into their feed BUT still enable their friends to link to their respective accounts. Thank you for catching that, Mark.
- Mona Nomura
It should be possible to use the Social Graph API to find services that are not imported into Friendfeed as well as friends' services not on FF. It's a bit tricky because it requires a lot of separate requests. Right now, it's only using the SG API to find your subscriptions across the services you import on FF.
- Hao Chen
Thanks, just don't look at the source code. LOL
- Hao Chen
Hao, this is awesome, this is going to save me so much time! Thanks!
- Shey
Very cool. However, my tiny brain is not grokking " Remove Connections Already Subscribed To". Please to explain.
- Laura Norvig
Laura, it's not very accurate, but it's supposed to remove links to people's accounts on the other networks you already subscribe to. For example, if I already subscribe to Bob on Twitter, it might remove the link to Bob's Twitter page in the big list.
- Hao Chen
very kool Hao....Im finding my fellow FF on other services!
- (jeff)isageek
Hao, this is very cool; I just used it to great success friending last.fm users.

Hao, since I am the lone step child, any idea why it would not work for me. I typed in my ID, nothing happens, no spinning wheel indicating it is thinking. Just looks at my sad face....LOL.
- R. Ferguson
Hoa - This is great. Can you add Blip.fm?
- Russellreno
this is so awesome Hao - great job!!!!!!!! look out for random add notifications from me :)
- Morgan
How does that work?I type in some user name in it,nothing happen...
- Steve Chou
Steve, what browser are you using? Any JavaScript errors?
- Hao Chen
Glad to hear you guys are finding uses for it. @Russell Right now, the list of services it displays is the list of services being imported by people's FF accounts, and since Blip.fm isn't a supported service yet, I can't add that in easily. I'll think about how to use the Social Graph API more effectively to do those things though.
- Hao Chen
This is just excellent, not wholly accurate like you say but brilliant. Now all I need is to add more contacts on FF ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Never seems to work for my own username.
- Andrew Trinh
Thanks, guys. :) Andrew, ah, looks like Social Graph doesn't see your FF subscriptions for some reason. http://socialgraph-resources.g... I'll re-code this using the Friendfeed API to get your subscriptions later.
- Hao Chen
Very cool Hao! I like seeing which less-common services people actually use. My list (and top 25 services) is http://friendfeed.com/e... Does your system count me twice for YouTube because I have 2 YouTubes? (seems like it might, from the Blog counts).

For most situations, I prefer the iPhone. I get really bad reception with my rock.. and it's hard to check my stocks and get directions to the pizza joint with it. from "How to Pick up Women Using Science Fiction Plot Devices" by J. J. Abrams? i personally prefer the version where you are naked and have a nosebleed -- the whole tanning thing doesn't work as well for me -- and you explain that the two of you are in a relationship in the future, but that you screwed it up horribly and went back in time to make things right. bonus points for repeating "we have to go back!" and being able to weep on cue a la Jack Shepherd from "Lost."

I thought I’d put out a post after I received my first earnings report (which I received today) from stock photography agency Getty Images. I signed up to have Getty represent 60 of my individual photographs as part of the recent deal between Getty Images and Flickr. The Flickr/Getty arrangement is by invite only and Getty initially selected about 90 of my images. I listed all of the images that they asked for that didn’t need model releases (which was 60). Most of the other images that they wanted where model releases were needed are of me or my family, so I’ll probably add those to the collection as well in the next few weeks. So in my first month of production with Getty I sold two of the 60 images. Those two images totaled $689.97 in fees to Getty and $138.00 (my 20% cut) to me. At the same time that I’d signed up with Getty I also listed 24,917 of my photos with the upstart stock photography agency Clustershot. Clustershot, started by Canadian web development company silverorange...

Pretty dismal return for both sites. I wouldn't have expected much from Clustershot, but with 25K photos on their site, you would think if they had any traffic, there would have been some sales. My guess is Clustershot has little to no real traffic from people looking to buy photos.
- Jeff P. Henderson
thanks for sharing this Thomas. its seems like once again, Getty wins out. Clustershot looks interesting but unless they have some inside tracks to advertisers/buyers they will end up just like the others (ie Photoshelter and the like). I do wish them luck though. I'd like to see more companies like this spring up and be successful.
- Carlos Ayala
Personally, I think in the long run ClusterShot or a company like them will have a chance. Photrade is another one out there with high photographer payouts. If the internet is good at anything, it's good at squeezing out the middleman, which today is Getty. Then again, one could make a pretty strong case that the value provided to the photographer by Getty is worth something. Maybe not 80% of the profit, but something more than 12% for sure.
- Thomas Hawk
ClusterShot responded via email to this post and I added their email to this article as an update as well.
- Thomas Hawk
Thank you Thomas for sharing it. Very interesting read.

Thanks for sharing Thomas! I was just looking at ClusterShot (literally a few hours before this post) and their site looks very interesting, however, I found it extremely slow to work with. For example, when I clicked on your name to load your pictures, it took roughly 1 - 2 minutes to load (maybe more). That is ridiculous. Perhaps using their service on a personal website (through an API) will be more beneficial right now. We'll see how their service builds out...

This is a common problem with the new photo selling sites. I call it the pizza delivery problem. Where I grew up there were dozens of pizza places within a few miles of my house. But, when I wanted to order a pizza, there were 1 or 2 that I would call 99% of the time. Where the others better or worse? No, I just hadn't eaten there before, and as a result, I never tried them. Yikes! While I'm happy that you have a way of selling your work, is 20% common? Why so much overhead?
- JCunwired
that's the market right now jcunwired. At least at Getty. 20% is also what they pay at iStockphoto. Right now they are the market leader. It would be interesting to see Corbis come out with a similar program to throw a little competition in there. I'm sure a lot of this will be changing in the next few years. I've always thought 20% feels low, even though Getty brings an awful lot to the table and not just in terms of their existing buyers. Their service is quite strong and professional as well.

You don't want Google street view on your phone, Joshua? And I'm more amazed this guy actually found a way to cross compile Java specifically for iPhone apps. Sure, there are many languages that cross compile (python, perl. etc) but since there's no standard protocol, Java is the one that everyone resorts to. And Ruby... I don't know enough about it to spew my two cents.

Right, anna... he talks about it from his personal perspective so he used "he"... I don't get why people were in such a miff about that. It can (and does) apply to women too... he wasn't trying to offend us but obviously can't really write it from the female perspective. Omission doesn't mean exclusion. :)
- Lindsay
Wow, wow, wow - he couldn't have more totally pegged me if he tried. I don't so much see Lindsay like that (though she shares a lot of those traits), but the thing about organization is EXACTLY me. Everything in that list is me. It's like he's studied me for years. Weird.
- iTad
Most of the things that he says that don't seem like I have that trait to you are just because I have been trained otherwise: My mom is a neat-freak and so I know HOW to organize and SEE things that are a mess and need to be cleaned, but it's still hard to motivate myself to take care of them, especially when there's something "better" to do.
- Lindsay
There are a lot of people identifying with what's said in this post, according to the huge comment list. One liner and multiple paragraph comments.
- Stu Andrews
It's easy to read a list and "see" the points in yourself. I'd say from my perspective I'm all of those things to some extent, even though, as you intimated Lindsay I might have been trained, or trained myself, otherwise. That's self-diagnosis though, and there were only one or two comments in the list where people were commenting about someone else.
- Stu Andrews
Lindsay, thankyou for friendfeeding this, it was a REALLY thought-provoking piece :) I've passed it round to the handful of other devs here, and it's started conversations instantly.

Sorry, will stop hogging this thread. Had to laugh though, reality check with this comment. "Bruce Says: August 28, 2008 at 1:37 pm I call shenanigans. Yeah, yeah, yeah, we’re all misunderstood geniuses. Right. In 20+ years of working in this industry I’ve never met anyone like this who I’d describe as a genius. I've run into a few of those programmers... they have gaps in their knowledge, sometimes they have really limited experience and are not sure how to approach a new technology ...then they're dangerous cuz they have to hide their ignorance.
- Susan Beebe
Sometimes in these breakdowns everyone wants to ascribe it to a personality disorder, instead of just... a personality. Not perfect, but not abnormal, in that normal is a combination of traits.
- anna sauce
I don't think it's a "disorder" either... There's going to be a segment of the population that has those traits... they're necessary and productive in some circumstances and so benefit the gene pool of the species. But I think that they're a pretty rare combination, or at least not a commonly recognized one and these blog posts do a good job of cataloging the aspects.
- Lindsay
@Susan, you're right, that personality can be "dangerous" in younger, more inexperienced programmers... There is such a big desire to "prove your worth" that people can get themselves into trouble and ego battles. It takes years, but eventually you learn how to deal with it and become a good consultant-type (or not and you end up a short-term contractor hopping around forever...).
- Lindsay
I don't really think it's about being a "genius". I just think it's a different way of perceiving the world... and because it's so analytical and we build models of reality in our heads and compare their validity that other people don't take the time or effort to then it seems like we're smarter, simply because we're able to see the world from so many angles. We tend to dismiss people who don't do that as "stupid", "close-minded" or even "intellectually lazy".
- Lindsay
