2. I had Post Natal Depression after my first child was born. I barely remember the first 11 weeks of his life. No one listened when I said something was wrong ... I was told I had sleep deprivation. Eventually I met someone who helped me.

3. After my 3rd child was born I started getting PND again but thankfully recognised the signs and got help before it got worse.

5. Turning 30 was the best thing that ever happened to me.

6. I have 4 tattoos. I got the first when I was 19. I love them and have never for a second regretted them. Hopefully number 5 is not far off. All of them are concealable though so not many people know I have them ;)

11. I've smoked pot but never taken any other drugs. I've done enough stupid things from drinking alcohol let alone getting messed up on anything else!
- Penny
12. I moved to Perth when I was 20. Spent 12 years there. I feel like that is where I truly grew up. I miss it every day and love it desperately. I am stoked that my kids were born there as it means we will always have a connection to our old home

I'm getting closer to my goal and it's so exciting! my new lifestyle has made this a wonderful year. so, cee... exchanging recipes... is that what they're calling it these days? ;) delicious. russell - hubby may be in class that night, so it may be just me. I know I'll cop shit for this (and there is certainly plenty of 'taking this piss' punnage available) but I think R. Kelly's Trapped In The Closet series is a masterpiece. Suspense, intrigue, twists and turns. I am not ashamed to say it :)
I will admit, me and my whole family accidentally started watching it and ended up watching the whole damn thing like somebody had a gun to our head. Either it's art or it's like a grizzly car accident.

Seriously, why do people have such a sense of entitlement? I'm talking about diners, patrons, and customers - not the service folks. And another article by SF Gate http://sfchronicle.us/cgi-bin...

I think many people culturally think that people should get remunerated apprropriately by the establishment- and not depend on "tips". Isn't Japan one of those cultures?
- Brian Sullivan
Japan is one of those cultures, but we are more educated and make it a point to teach certain societal standards, such as tipping. I'm questioning Americans - who are born and bread here, that think "CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT." Get over yourselves. Seriously.
- Mona Nomura
My Marketing 101 prof explained how he shorted waiters if he didn't like the food under the hope that the servers would pressure the cooks to cook better. Based on my year as a waiter I don't see that as being very likely. The kitchen staff were viewed as permanent fixtures of the establishment while the waiters were viewed as little more than temps.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
In my restaurant when doing payroll, 8% of a server's sales is added to their gross income and taxed.
- Kevykev
Michael? Is that a serious question? @Daniel - whatever the principles are behind tipping is up to the individual. Heck, I don't tip at times when I have issues. However, our culture has dangerously evolved into a "we we we" society, in which people feel they are required something, in order to give. That's what my problem is.
- Mona Nomura
I agree with most of the post, except the last paragraph. I only go out to eat a few times a year, and I'm not there to critique wait staff when I do.
- Alix Whitmire
Social Networking sites are part of the problem too. ie: Yelp. Everyone and their mother thinks they're food critics because they have voices - and most of the reviews are irrational. This is a cultural epidemic.
- Mona Nomura
I agree...tip. The only rational reason you should use to not tip is if the service was indeed horrible AND you never plan on going back to the restaurant. Vote with your feet, not your tips. Don't like the tipping system in this country? Move to France.
- Alex Scoble
I don't tip when I get bad service. Instead, I give the server's tip to the manager, to distribute to the busboy/girl and or kitchen staff.
- Mona Nomura
I tip base on the service not on the food, since the server can only server what they are given. Even if for what ever reason I don't like the food I am still going to tip the server. In fact there have been times when the food itself was just average but the service was special so I would tip more. However I do look at the check to make sure they did not already take the tip out (something I hate). I don't believe in tipping twice
- Kim Landwehr
What does Yelp have to do with tipping or food critics? +++Kim
- Admiral Anika
I generally tip very well and this translates to excellent service at the places I visit most often, sometimes including free food/drinks.
- Michael McKean
I tip based on the overall experience, because I have no reason to expect the tip to go directly to the server anyway. I also tip to some extent based on my unwillingness to be weighed down with small coins. :) I've never seen any first-hand evidence that good or bad tipping would influence how you're treated on a subsequent visit, though.
- Karl Knechtel
Used to deliver pizzas, I try and tip gratuitously as much as possible. Only if the server was a complete jerk will I consider shorting them. Tipping great the first time you show up (bar, rest, whatever) makes the staff go well out of the way for you later though.
- Amber, Random Time Lord
Basic human psychology. When people are rewarded, they are encouraged, which satisfies egos. This online empowerment translates to outside behaviors, giving the general public a sense of entitlement, Anika.
- Mona Nomura
If its convenient and i can do the math correctly, i tip > 15%, If i hurt someone's feelings by tiping < 15% and i realize, i try to return. Its not a cultural thing for me its because i know tips subsidize waiters incomes. Like Alex i only refuse to tip when the service is horrible
- Tweet Feeds
Karl, the better treatment tends to be from locally owned places that I visit at least a few times per month. Another reason I tip well is I used to work in a restaurant and I know how much it sucks.
- Michael McKean
I will totally tip well (10 to 15%) if they leave me alone, don't ask me questions when I have food in my mouth, ask if I want a refill (soda) when the glass is empty, or otherwise just simply take care of me. Best tip I ever gave was 50 bucks at Ruth Chris's the server was awesome and it was our 15th wedding anniversary.
- Dan Morrill AKA Techwag
It goes both ways - servers that feel they deserve 15% regardless of the service they give, get what they deserve.
- Mona Nomura
10% is totally stiffing a waiter. 15% is the expected tip...20% is tipping well.
- Alex Scoble
My mom pretty much raised me on tips, so I always try to leave a decent tip (at least 20%) but I will *NOT* reward bad service. In the past I've left two pennies on the table for really poor service, but I like Mona's method of giving the tip to the hostess or manager instead. I don't leave tips for pickup orders though. I think that's ridiculous.
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
I start at 15% and people can work their way up or down from there. If the service is "bad" I'll usually leave 10% or so, because I know in TX servers only make 2.15/hr. If the service is horrible, I'll *literally* leave a penny. I have done this exactly 1 time and it was warranted. The server in question actually asked me "why did you even come here if you don't want anything from the menu." That was in response to me asking if I could get my salad without dressing and no gravy on my meal.
- Christian (Simply X)
Lay $20 in ones on the table. Tell the server each time they screw up, you take away a dollar. You'll get the best service of your life.
- Jared B. Luther
We eloped and had a one night "honeymoon" in New Orleans. We went to a popular seafood restaurant there and our waiter basically abandoned us after taking our order. The poor waitress for the table next to us helped us out enough to get through the meal but it was an awful experience and especially so since it was our first meal as a married couple. We left the guy a 1 penny tip. He ruined what was supposed to be a wonderful night for us.
- Lindsay is in 20-ten
Wow, that is not classy. But whatever works, I guess. :\
- Mona Nomura
On the other hand, I've actually left over 200% of my bill as a tip for really really good service, granted it was a greasy spoon diner and my meal was under $7, but I still left a $20 tip.
- Christian (Simply X)
@Michael: All the "locally owned" places around here that are worth eating at seem to be the sort where you pay at a register. :/
- Karl Knechtel
Still don't get what Yelp has to do with tipping. What I read on Yelp has no effect on my tipping habits and I seriously doubt it has affects anyone else either. Also, most people don't write on Yelp their ideas of the meal, but about their over experience, which, once again, has no bearing on my tipping habits. I don't see how reading a review on Yelp makes anyone feel like they're owed anything either.
- Admiral Anika
Alex, I think base tip might be regional. Myself and my aunt are the only two people I know who routinely leave over 10%.
- Alix Whitmire
Being in the business, I can tell when a server is trying hard or hardly trying. I tip based on effort.
- Robert Hafer
Regional and cultural. If you tip more than 10% in Chinatown in Toronto, you probably stand out. If you tip only that much on Queen West, you probably stand out for a very different reason. And these neighbourhoods are only half a kilometre apart at their closest.
- Karl Knechtel
I usually tip 20%. Crappy service gets 15%. Outstanding service gets 20+%. I enjoy leaving people happy.
- cjmart
It also seems to be that some people simply can't do the math. I was upset when the sales tax went to 6% recently. I taught my Adult Ed students how to figure sales tax and tips based on starting at 10%, which they could find easily.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
m9m, there's really no excuse for the education system failing that badly.
- Karl Knechtel
My students were adults, most of them parents. When they took the placement test for math, they usually completed add, subtract, multiply and divide without much trouble, but every single one of them lost it at fractions. None of them had learned percent. I think I taught them a better way because I have no gift for math myself. I taught them coping skills - fractions for cooking,...
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
I use my fingers when doing basic arithmetic. Really.
- Michael McKean
I am a generous tipper who votes with my tip *and* my feet. If the food sucks, that's not the server's fault, and it doesn't impact my tipping. But if server sucks, server is not entitled to a good tip. (Yeah, I said this on Alex's feed, too.)
- Anthony Citrano
I round up to the nearest dollar, say 34.23 -> 35, multiply by 2, and then put a decimal after the first (or second) number, so a $7.0(0) tip. Easier that way.
- Alix Whitmire
LD, so sometimes you can have too much of a good thing. and stop resurrecting old threads. it's not cute. :)

Leo, go buy a macbook so the new ones will be released already! You should hold for a few more months so things can get better and sell in Feb when it's starting to pick up... you are selling at the bottom! WTF?
- Trevor Pressman
Cash may be losing some value, but not like stocks. How can some of you say this is the bottom, especially some of those stocks. The bottom is likely yet to come. Gold may seem cliched, but it is a safe place when all else goes in the tank. Gold related companies as well.

I've deliberately not looked at our portfolios since everything starting hitting the shitter. I trust our money people...though I suppose I should call and at least make sure they've not offed themselves.

Oh, this is not the bottom. The bottom is coming, and it's going to be much worse than we are seeing now.

Isn't the fact that the stock market is become like it is BECAUSE people are just selling all their stocks? Sorry if I've got it wrong.... but I thought that's kinda the cause of everything,

Hope you don't miss the upswing and end up buying back in above your sell prices...

Wish I'd learned this a lot earlier: Never. Sell. Assets. (unless you plan to actually use the money) I'm not selling a thing this time around.
- Ray Grieselhuber
Leo: you are always on KGO Radio. Did Bob Brinker recommend you do such a thing? That dude is ALWAYS right. I don't know how he does it, but he's called nearly every up and down in the past 20 years that I've been listening pretty damn accurately. He also usually gives sound advice like "don't sell all at once, but dollar cost average." Doing stuff like that keeps you from reacting emotionally at the wrong times and keeps you from trying to totally time the market, like what you're doing here.
- Robert Scoble
I have what investment cash I have in Prosper.com, earning an average of 15% to 19%, and small amounts in sharebuilder.com (very small). I prefer investing in microlending where there's a long-term almost certain return...
- Justin Long
Prosper looks cool. I wouldn't put ALL my cash there (or at least in a single loan) but I would consider putting some of it there.
- Ray Grieselhuber
I put in a set amount a month on automatic disbursement, and I am using one of prosper's automatic portfolio selectors that divides investments up amongst different grades of risk, at $50/loan. So its *very* diversified. I've been in well over a year and even with the inevitable losses that of some loans going bad, I *still* average between 15% and 19% return at any given moment. I can't say enough good things about Prosper.
- Justin Long
if you'd said that in December or January you could've bought back today at a huge discount - the same will be said in 4 months time - check Gold going to 1300$ while you hold and wait

Check the date. I moved to cash on 9/22 (about $70,000 off the low for me) and bought back in (no load index funds primarily) when the Dow was at 8,000. Hope I didn't do it too early!

Leo... Why would you do such a thing? You never sell low after buying high. You must be an Obama voter.

"Watch as Joaquin Phoenix curses out and attacks a fan by leaping into the audience at the Fountainebleau Hotel in Miami. According to the YouTube poster of the video, here's how it went down. In response to a heckler, Phoenix went into an expletive-laced tirade and boasted about his financial superiority. "I've got $1 million in the bank. What have you got? " According to Radaronline, Phoenix then launched himself into the crowd, which had been waiting around four hours for the "hip-hop star," and attacked the man. The crowd chanted "beat him up, beat him up!" or something like that. It's hard to hear in the video. Security guards quickly responded by dragging -- not the heckler -- but Joaquin, the evening's star, out of the venue."

I hate SQL but I used to use MySQL because it was easy but then I migrated to Postgresql (probably just to be different). However, now I try to avoid database work whenever I can.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I want to say Access just to be contrary ;-) Dunno, I've dealt with Oracle, MSSQL and MySQL more than Postgre SQL. Of those three, I prefer the interface MSSQL offers, MySQL for size and speed, and Oracle for sheer unadulterated power.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
For what purpose? For corporate work like data warehousing I want Oracle. For anything smaller it would be MySql.
- Rob Diana
I really like Oracle, but it's overkill for most stuff. I have a special place in my heart for PostgreSQL, but my workhorse RDBMS is MySQL.
- Mark Trapp
MS SQL is my default. MySQL when I'm going for free or w/ PHP. Oracle if I need a huge cluster and several terabytes, though MSSQL is catching up on that. Access or SQLExpress if I only have one user.

Do you vote for a specific DB because it's the only one you know, or because you experienced a few and decided this is the best one for you?

It's hard to swallow no Wifi on the Storm, but the iPhone doesn't even do video [natively] and has a lower screen resolution and crappier camera.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
have you tried the storm? the push button screen is annoying
- Richard Lawler
You should think about the Curve if going the Blackberry route.
- Shevonne
Have you looked at the HTC Touch Pro? Although you are likely on Rogers so maybe they don't have it. WiFi, video, 3.2 MP camera, nice interface, active sync for GMail, Google Maps with GPS. I like mine a lot.
- Kenton
Storm is nice in theory, but not in implementation. If you're gonna go BB, look at the Bold. Also, the iPhone has MAD apps. Something to think about. I like my Apple stuff, but I'm no fanboy. And I love mine.
- Derrick
@Shevonne There's been a lot of iPhone fan-people who have been spreading a lot of crap about the Storm. I've played with it alot and it's downright sexy. @Richard I love the clickscreen, it's a great idea.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
If I were you I would also consider the BB Bold.
- Michelle Martinez
I have heard negative stuff about the Storm. And seeing the commercial where they type on the screen and every letter clicks makes me think I would go insane using it. Between the two I'd pick the iPhone. But I will also say that I love my Android G1! :)
- Lindsay is in 20-ten
I just recently switched from a BlackBerry to the iPhone. Both have their advantages/disadvantages. Both data plans are $30/mo. (at least, mine was on VZW) and, for me, the iPhone makes that $30 much more worth it. Way better browsing experience and a lot more apps.

@Shevonne @Mona The sad part is it will take forever for those phones to come to Canada. I HATE the Canadian telecom market

@Shey =( You can't get an unlocked one on Ebay? It's just like here. Europe and Asia have phones we'll never get our hands. Makes me green with envy.

@Shevonne, I think everyone has pretty much agreed that the MSFT phone rumors were about software/services for Windows Mobile and not a MSFT-branded phone

I'm not a BB guy (i'm on my 2nd iPhone) but if you want to do more than email from the phone - go with the iPhone. Internet access is unparalleled - Safari alone would be enough of a win, but couple that with socnet specific apps and it's a hands down winner. If you were considering a storm, you're ok with the soft keyboard and unless you really, really need it to do video (which you may be able to do if you jailbreak?) the iPhone's gotta be the way. :)

Shey go for the storm. People just steal iPhones on Bart (true story)
- @CrystalinaB
Buy the iPhone—no doubt. There are some interesting things about Android and the Palm Pre. However, neither of them has the goods to catch Apple in features or variety of 3rd-party apps. Apple is just on version 2.2.1; version 3.0 of the software (and likely the hardware) will be out around June-ish, which should result in another jump in features and capabilities. Like with the iPod, Apple has a lead they will not lose.
- Albert Willis
iPhone vs. the Storm. Most of the hardware is comparable, but Apple has the advantage with software, with the AppStore, etc. Video capture on non-jailbroken phones is coming. And no wi-fi on the Storm is a deal breaker. I mean, that's just nuts. Mobile Safari was great when it was released and continues to get better and better. I do an amazing amount of surfing on the iPhone—it matters.
- Albert Willis

- Roberto Bonini
iPhone all the way. If you jailbreak, you can fix the missing features.
- Mohamed J
i bought a HTC Touch HD, and as much as it is windows mobile 6.1 based, so far i like it a lot! it is not necessarily as easy in autorotating as iPhone - remedy is called GSen - but it is arguably better and has better charactereistics than iPhone. so perhaps consider it as well.

"“As hard as it is to believe, bankers who are living on the Upper East Side making $2 or $3 million a year have set up a life for themselves in which they are also at zero at the end of the year with credit cards and mortgage bills that are inescapable,” said Holly Peterson, the author of an Upper East Side novel of manners, “The Manny,” and the daughter of Peter G. Peterson, a founder of the equity firm the Blackstone Group. “Five hundred thousand dollars means taking their kids out of private school and selling their home in a fire sale.” Sure, the solution may seem simple: move to Brooklyn or Hoboken, put the children in public schools and buy a MetroCard. But more than a few of the New York-based financial executives who would have their pay limited are men (and they are almost invariably men) whose identities are entwined with living a certain way in a certain neighborhood west of Third Avenue: a life of private schools, summer houses and charity galas that only a seven-figure income can stretch to "

Wow, the numbers boggle me. How does the world get so off kilter like this? They have a point, in that many of those people worked hard to get where they are, but wow, I'm speechless. Makes my payments seem small in comparison, but by percentage, they are the same in that regard...
- Danielle Closs
This sounds crazy but the numbers here are actually on the low side, aside from having a driver (most senior bankers I know don't have one.) A $1.5mm apartment is _moderate/avg_ here in Manhattan where price per sq foot can exceed $1500. Apartments on the UES run $4-6mm, in my less desirable neighborhood it's $1mm+ for a 1-bedroom, $2-3mm or more for some 2+ bedrooms. A senior banker would likely have a place in the $5-8mm range. This is why nobody can afford NYC.
- Tom Karlo
I couldn't live a life that forced to me to keep up appearances just to fit in. I wonder why they feel the need to do so?
- Admiral Anika
Just to add to that, someone just closed on an 870 sq ft, one bedrm apt in my building for $1.3mm. ($1500 / sqft). That's in a down market, the buyer was a surgeon. I know lots of junior bankers who live 40-60 minutes outside of Manhattan because they couldn't afford a place big enough for their kids here in town.
- Tom Karlo
I think a big part of the expense, at least as I read the article, has to do with the fixed costs of real estate and children's education commitments. To divest from the real estate means big losses and giving up a child's school may be one of the hardest things for any parent to do.
- Thomas Hawk
I'm just glad and feel very lucky that I've got my four kids in a good public school right now.
- Thomas Hawk
@Anika I don't think I could live a life like that either, but it's not entirely their fault that our society dictates that this is the way they need to be to be in that industry. However, if anyone can change the way the industry is, it is those people that are a part of it. It takes guts to stand up and really make a change in a system so long set to these standards. I am just glad that I never wanted to be a big city banker... Or maybe, the atmosphere of the industry is what caused me to not want it.
- Danielle Closs
Do you think that if enough people can't afford to live there, they will [be forced to] leave, and then the costs will lower, because of less demand, and then things will even out, with regards to housing? I'm hoping for a similar scenario in Michigan with the job market, where enough people leave the state (they are leaving in droves), there will be enough jobs left for those that stay.
- Danielle Closs
Sometimes life is difficult, with difficult choices. A financially large compensation package is a reward for a job well done. Since these caps would only be placed on those companies that received some sort of bail-out, it can be argued that these individuals have not done a good job and therefore do not deserves to be financially rewarded.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
While I don't personally live in Manhattan, I have friends who do on a lot less than $500k a year. And I'm kind of hoping that the fallout from this brings down prices in the city to the point that someone making what I make can afford a place there...
- Eric P
In today's technology economy, there is no reason they have to live where they live. Move your operation to a place with lower cost of living. Wall Street does not have to be the center of the universe. It's almost all electronic anyway.
- Eric @ CSTechcast.com
MOVE! Sorry if you can't live on the Upper East Side anymore and pay $30K a year for private school for EACH of your kids. Sorry you will have to give up you house in the Hamptons. Sorry you can't park your BMW 7 in a heated garage for $500 a month. Sorry....welcome to the human race!
- John Flynn
It's nice to say "move out of New York" but the other option for a banker is basically London, which isn't any cheaper. Banking is _not_ an electronic business at the senior level - this is investment banking, which is basically client service, not commercial banking, which is what most people think of when you say "bank." Some of these people are going to move, but if you've been a banker for 20 yrs, it's not so easy to just find another job, sell your home in this market, and yank your kids from school.
- Tom Karlo
They need to take their identity out of what they earn and own, and it is not always easy, but they could live nicely in some smaller place for a while until things start rebounding.
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Ask yourself, if you had $1MM to invest, do you want to trust it to the guy who looks like he knows how to make money? Or the guy who drives the Honda Civic and has an office in the strip mall next to the Quiznos? The schools, the addresses, the parties, and the vacation homes are all signals that the bankers know how to make money for themselves, and therefore for their clients. If you can afford those things, you must have made a lot of money for other people to get paid like that.
- Ryan Kuder
If we calculate the rent of the White House and all Obama's servants, he makes more than 500,000 a year. Let Obama move to the projects and bicycle to work everyday! As far as secret service protection goes, Obama can buy a gun and protect himself from terrorists on his way to work! <sarcasm>
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
@Ryan, but go back to what Mark VandenBerg said, and should these people be rewarded, if their companies are asking for a bailout? While I agree with you in the sense that the finery is necessary for the right image, I think it can be (and will have to be) done on less, and I do think that those that are in leadership in the companies that are failing (even, and especially, big banks) should be well, for lack of a better word, punished.
- Danielle Closs
Something has to be done, and I don't envy those that have to make the decisions about what...

from twhirl
@Igor I was not necessarily blaming the banks, but stating that they obviously did not practice good business if they need a bailout, right? I have heard of many smaller banks that practiced good business, and are actually not hurting at all. I think the crises stem from a multitude of happenings from different places, that all coincided at the same time. It's also not just the lower interest rates, really, it's the people that were greedy and thought that they could get rich quick off of house sales.
- Danielle Closs
Yeah, I'm blaming the financial wizards who decided that it wasn't enough to make money on the crap subprime loans they were pushing, but thought up the brilliant idea of floating 20-40 times the value of the mortgage to the market in the form of mortgage backed securities and credit default swaps. The Fed keeping interest rates low had very little to do with this mess. That was a very weak link in the chain of causation.
- Alex Scoble
These financial idiots are the NUMBER EFFING ONE REASON for this mess. Without these guys it would have been like 2000 lb. bombs getting dropped on a few communities, with these guys it was like a nuke was dropped on Las Vegas and New York.
- Alex Scoble
@Spidra I agree with you, the cover never tells the whole truth, but society still expects big bankers to be a certain way, as the do expect engineers, geeks, or doctors to be a certain way. We need to change this system of the cover tells the story, as well as fix the economic situation. Fall back and regroup, get back to basics, and just be more genuine, all around... Easier said than done!
- Danielle Closs
Of course if we cut their salaries drastically, many of these imbeciles will move to other industries and screw them up as well. Perhaps we should leave them in banking...
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
I think they should be put to work holding up lamp posts, Mark. That's about all they are good for.
- Alex Scoble
Alex, the derivative market was not regulated at all. The FED should have been regulating it. If you place a pot of gold in the middle of the street and no one watching it, someone will take the pot home!
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
@Mark, lol! You have a point, but do we want them playing with our money still? Maybe we make them make a mandatory change in industry, as long as it's not something important, like the medical industry. Of course, come to think of it, is there an industry right now that can afford to be screwed up more?
- Danielle Closs
The fault still lies with the crooks, Igor and not with the cops missing the crime. You need to stop sticking up for these asshole crooks. It's making you look like an asshole as well.
- Alex Scoble
Ryan, I agree with Spidra. If I had a mil, I would invest with the frugal guy driving the old honda with a record of making money for his clients. Not the guy who's leveraged to the hilt and just getting by.
- Greg Guitarbuster
The problem with investment banks and bankers is that they compete for higher returns. Bankers compensation is tied to higher returns. The more the banks make the more the bankers make. It is in their self interest to take risk. Instead fixing the salaries to a fix number like 500k it is better to fix the salaries to the profits of the banks.
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Alex, I am not sticking up for them. I would not want to be a banker in the first place. But with capping their pay, we will make the banking problem take longer time to fix. People will not work so hard for so little money. They will go work for Asian and European banks or hedge funds.
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
@Igor Right, because if the salaries have a specific set limit (glass ceiling), they won't be as productive, because they know once they hit that limit, there is no reason for them to continue pushing harder. Salesmen on commission work harder, because it is in their hands how much they make. Their bankers "sales" directly influence the success of the bank, and if they have a glass ceiling, then the bank won't do well when the bankers hit that limit.
- Danielle Closs
This seems to me like it's not going to work [to help the economy], except to punish the bankers...
- Danielle Closs
Igor, then the banks should be hiring tribal warlords and drug cartels, people that know how to manage risk. Oh wait, the bankers are holding their money already.
- Greg Guitarbuster
These banks need to be punished, Danielle. Without accountability there is no trust and without trust there are no markets.
- Alex Scoble
This is more a political move by Obama Administration to get support from his constituents. Obama is the president already, what is he trying to prove? He needs to sacrifice some goats for the public? LOL
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
@Alex So, this is more about punishing the banks, then about cleaning up the economy. Seems to me that many people have the wrong idea. As long as there is a focus, one way or another. I was [as are many others] under the impression that this was a money-saving tactic... Anyone have figures on how much it might save, if any, or if that part of the equation matters?
- Danielle Closs
Greg, Taliban Hamas, Al Qaeda are all available! They have lots of Saudi experience! LMAO
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
This has nothing to do with saving money, in my opinion. We are saying that banks that have taken bailout money don't deserve to pay their employees exorbitant amounts on the US taxpayer's dime. It's punitive. As it should be.
- Alex Scoble
Igor, Taliban is not available, they are signing a long term consulting gig with Pete Session, Texas congressman who wants to build a Republican insurgency
- Greg Guitarbuster
Alex, the USA government is the biggest investor in these banks now. Is it not in the government interest to hire the best and the brightest to make their investment go up in price? The USA government represents the USA people, so it is the American people investments. But then maybe Alex likes to work for free on Friend Feed! LOL
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Well I guess not many people will be attending business schools over the next decade or so. Better enroll in Medical school and become a doctor. Better pay!

These idiots already proved that they aren't the best and the brightest. AND they proved that they aren't worth their pay by doing serious harm to the economy.
- Alex Scoble
@Igor We could go back to their education, that would be a good place to start. We all know that our education here is going downhill. Of course, the thing of it is, it happened, let them figure out how to fix it, I don't want to hear any more about how it is costing me money...
- Danielle Closs
It's all just a big blame game, and I'm done with that, let's just learn from the past, move on, and try to fix it...

Actually the shareholders of the banks are to blame for this mess! They shareholders and the directors should have voiced their discontent with the amount of risk the banks are taking. I am sorry for your loss of hard work and memories. Does this instance make an argument for 'cloud' storage, pragmatically, for those who can't afford some sort of RAID storge?
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
It sucks you lost the data. Keep trying to recover it. If it is in an external enclosure you may want to try pulling it out and putting it directly into a computer. Maybe the enclosure just died? Also, I'd start shopping for a DROBO. I just had a 500GB drive die on me in the drobo and not a byte of data was lost.
- Dylan Parker
Dylan, it was an WD Passport, so by default it plugs into the computer. As for a Drobo, I would love one, but that means we won't eat for the next 3 weeks. Mark, I am partial to cloud storage and have been talking to my husband about it. I've been trying for almost a year to move our business stuff completely online & somehow he's resisting it.

Try pulling the hard drive out of the case and plugging it in to an internal port. I've had cases where the external case died but the hard drive itself was perfectly fine - or at least I was able to get the data off of it.
- Eric P
send the hdd to the guy you got the comp from. they will recover the data for you. there's software recovery and hardware recovery. you can get back most of the data almost every time. worth a shot. worked for me just a couple of months back.
- vijay
I had that happen once to an external drive attached to my windows home sever. The thing just failed. Bang, gone.Grrrrr.
- Roberto Bonini
Get a screwdriver and start unscrewing all the screws you find. At some point you might have to break the plastic shell, just be careful not to damage the drive. Can't guarantee anything, but at this point you've got nothing to lose.
- Eric P
WHOOOO-HOOOOOOO I got it up and running again. Now to pull everything off and maybe reformat it.
- Admiral Anika
Though let this be a lesson to all - keep at least two copies of your data on two different devices at all times. For less than 100 GB, cloud storage is a very viable option.
- Eric P
Ironically, the past 2 weeks I've been duplicating our files. As I said before, this drive was our backup for most of our work files, but all my blog info, photographs, etc...this was the only place we had it. I can't really afford to pay for storage anywhere and life would be easier if online doc places accepted the size of files we create. Gotta figure out something.
- Admiral Anika
Let me second that recommendation. Also: look at the Samsung LCD's if you can afford them.
- Sparky
Seconding Sparky -- for LCDs, it's hard to beat Samsung.
- James (@willia4)
I had a Samsung before, and I'm partial to them. I like the Sony XBR's, too, Rochelle, but they are making me reach deeper into already lint-filled pockets.
- Derrick
Grab one for me too, while you are at it. kthxby
- JA Castillo
Seriously though...someone I know just picked up one of these...looks yum! And it is a Samsung... http://bit.ly/12qWs
- JA Castillo
Don't think I forgot about that, Rochelle. I've been eyeing that TV since Akiva posted that first pic of, what was it -- 2001? The Fifth Element? I just didn't think I'd find myself in the market for one so quickly.
- Derrick
Consumer Reports said my Panasonic Plasma was the best looking TV ever (1 year ago) and I believe it
- RAPatton
Plasmas look AMAZING at first, but have a relatively short lifespan, and their colors and contrast fade - even just a few years after purchase they look washed out.
- Sparky
I looked at a Pioneer Kuro plasma at the store today and it was PHENOMENAL. Way too rich for my blood, but it was damned impressive.
- Derrick
Akiva says that for Blu-Ray watching, the Sony is superior to that Samsung.
- Rochelle
Derrick, trust me: pairing up a Sony Blu-ray player with a Sony XBR is a killer combination for the x.v.color capabilities alone.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Of the screens I have seen (in actual homes), the Samsung models have always been WIN. If and when we can afford one, that's the line I will look at first.
- JA Castillo
I'm gonna have to set up a Paypal button on my Friendfeed page to solicit digital hat passing.
- Derrick
I think that is something we could all do!
- JA Castillo
You can donate blowjobs through Paypal now?!
- Sparky
you know that blu-ray doesn't do xv color right?
- Richard Lawler
I thought so.. I only heard of x.v. color when researching HD camcorders.
- Rodfather
yeah, I'm pretty sure the only way it's supported is on avchd discs. The bravias are nice but I probably wouldn't shell out extra for em. if the price is right and it works for your setup, I like the Kuros. I If it's an LCD, probably the Samsung, you're getting the same thing as the Sony and probably for less. Sharp has good ones too, but I haven't checked to see if they've worked out some of the issues they were having.
- Richard Lawler
I'm going to have to upgrade to a newer one soon (my main display is not HDMI), and haven't researched in years. I'm impressed that Samsung has retained its status at the top of the LCD list!
- jcunwired
When I first went there you had to hike a dirt path through the jungle; there was no mall, parking lot or tram. It was quite a shock when I came back and they were there. Coba is still pretty wild if you want the experience
- RAPatton

I don't get it. And while I usually am a serious guy around here I think my funny-bone is intact. It's not funny.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Man, that site registered in 2001 and I daresay they've had those same pics up all the while.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
...I remember seeing this years ago; has not been updated since.
- JA Castillo
Yes, it hasn't been updated in years and I haven't visited the site since'04. I love it, only because in online discussions about race, there's sometimes that one person who says the most offensive things & then much later says, "My best friend of 20 years is black." So, I usually reply, "Oh I get it." and link to this site.
- Admiral Anika
Why the hell haven't I seen this til now??? But yeah, tres stupid.
- Derrick
Meh. This is a stupid idea for a web site, and borderline racist. :/
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
I get the satire, but I can't say I like it. If it helps someone to understand that what he/she is saying/thinking/doing is stupid, then cool. As for me, when I was a kid, I used to love touching my platinum blonde classmate's hair. I couldn't understand why it bugged her. I'm not going to say I needed that site to make me think about it, but some people might. Just one example.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
3 or 4 years ago, on DailyKos and Jack & Jill Politics, we had discussions on this site. It was interesting because a lot of us (educated black people) had been in that situation of being put on display by a "well-meaning" white person who wanted to show how hip they were. The discussions on both sites were interesting. On DK, people were offended by those of us who linked them to the site. At JJP, most people thought it was hilarious.
- Admiral Anika
I agree, this is a satire its not funny at all...
- Moses Kpetigo
i thought it -- think it -- hilarious, actually. to me it's along the lines of damali ayo's rent-a-negro. they founders were on GMA when the site debuted. if i remember correctly, their stepmom was/is black and it's their effort to make fun of some of the clueless behavior they have seen white people do to her and other black people. EDIT: a news piece from 2002 http://abcnews.go.com/GMA...
- tiffany
I find the site about what white people like extremely funny because it lampoons stereo-types that are mostly true anyway and does it with good intentions. I did not get the same vibe from this site.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
i still like Chris Rock's bit from his last HBO special, i'm paraphrasing, but it went something like: "oh i love it, love it! black and white people together, being friends. all of my black friends have lots and lots of white friends. all of my white friends have ONE black friend. me." .LOLz
- .LAG liked that
I don't see how this isn't funny or at least that wasn't so many years ago when it went up, unless you've actually said something like "but I have black friends" and expected the person you're talking to to do anything other than laugh in your face.
- Richard Lawler
I've always thought that the intention behind this site was very funny but the execution was a little off. In more capable hands, it could've been classic comedy.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I don't really see how, unlike mark's statement indicates, it lampoons mostly true stereotypes. that's a satire win to me. The site could use some web 2.0 polish, but as old as it is i don't see it changing.
- Richard Lawler
Monday was deadline - you should have them all this week. Mine are all in and out. Phew!
- Maria Niles
Got most of mine yesterday. Still waiting on the big, bad one though.
- cjmart
I realize Monday was the deadline, and I have already filed the extention based on non-receipt of the 1099's... I just wish I would receive them before June...
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Whats the point of SocialWhois? Is it really of any use? I took a look at some of the profiles through there, and it reminds me of Chi.mp, so whats different from Chi.mp?
- Colide81 (James)
Coide81: good question! Chi.mp is about people. SocialWhois is about people AND what they're interested in. Suppose you're needing some help with css, and wonder who to ask, just go over: http://www.socialwhois.com/tag... you'll find a bunch of folks ready to help (hopefully) Let alone the ability to follow people who'll make you happy because you'll learn and share things that matter to you :)
- directeur
Not really. My sister uses it when she visits and so I have an account set up for her but for the most part I don't like when people touch my stuff.
- ♥patricia♥
Hellz nah! No one touches my Mac. They can use my PC desktop though
- Shevonne
I don't even like my family touching mine. And I have ZERO porn.
- Mona Nomura
from IM
My work laptop? No...My desktop? My fiance can use that.
- Alex Scoble
Not if I can possibly help it. Computer = my job, so if someone horses around with it and hoses it up, I'm royally screwed.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
There's no one here who would want/need to use it. Akiva has plenty of his own and Audrey can't type yet.
- Rochelle
They wouldn't want to use my laptop after finding out where I've used it. :)
- Morton Fox
This is why both my kids have their OWN computers! There are now 7 computers in this house (where either 2 or 4 people live), including my two work machines. :-)
- Ladybug Heather
I set up a separate account for my girlfriend, but that's mostly because booting into mine invokes a bunch of startup programs and custom settings that she has no need for.
- Eric P
Only family, otherwise don't like if someone else uses it.
- Nia
I let everyone in our family use my MacBook all the time.
- Thomas Hawk
I've got my kids stuff set up though on Safari so they don't do too much damage to my Firefoxy.
- Thomas Hawk
this is the first time in 4 days that i have managed to have the laptop for more than abou 10 mins! never letting people use it again lol
- ♥ Stephiepooos ♥
my wife gets malware, love her, but she has a bad habit clicking OK buttons. we are a windows family so we obv. are more at risk for malware/fighting because a computer is broke.
- sean percival
I generally prefer not to, but I have let my cousin use my laptop when she's over (mainly because she's been debating buying a Mac and wanted to check mine out).
- Penguin It's Cold Outside
My desktop at home, yes. But my laptop no. It's the one I use most and has all my important stuff on it. If I leave my son with his father for the weekend and they stay at our house, I take the computer with me.
- Katie is Frittering
I don't like to, but I don't really have a choice.

nope. it's like letting someone use your toothbrush: very unsanitary. .LOLz

It's a very short list, but it happens. If they're doing stuff on the internet I will make them use IE so they don't "accidentally" get into my accounts.

Yea! I let my boyfriend all the time cause he will fix them for me!
- Brandy Lea
just my wife, but she uses her own mostly.

I have a stand-by notebook lying around for anybody who wants to use one. Somebody using my mbp makes me uncomfortable - I hover.

No. I'd let people that I trust use it, but my setup is so customized that no one can figure it out anyway.
- Nathan Howell
yes, people used to get confused on my pc, with all the custom tools, but recenly it has become pretty barebones and standard again.

Not if I have anything to say about it.
- JA Castillo
Only when necessary... there's a reason why everyone in my house has his/her own computer (or two). I hate it when Tad uses mine and closes all my FireFox tabs... Thank goodness for the Session Manager extension.
- Lindsay is in 20-ten
Depends on who these "other people" are.
- Jordan Hofker
Its a home business computer, but i get annoyed even when my wife uses it. Mainly because it means I have to wait or find something else to do.
- Alistair (alpinefolk)
Not much of a point. Everyone I know has their own laptop.
- Steven Perez
Sometimes if people come over and want to check email or whatever, , most of my friends have their own laptop/smartphone
- matthew john ernisse
I'm the only one who uses my computer but have no problem with others using it. My laptop in the other room is used by everyone.
- Kol Tregaskes
Desktop: No way. It's pretty well personalized that a lot of people can't find their way around anyway. Tablet: From time to time. I let my sister borrow it for a week to do some sketching. Eee901: I let people play with it. Girls think it's cute.
- Brooks Bishop

I have no choice, I use a family computer, so I have to share. But when I have my own computer I will not let anyone use it.
- Colide81 (James)
Begrudgingly, under their own login!
- Sarah Perez
Most of the time no, but don't get asked by people that often.
- Richard A.
Letting people use your computer is like letting people use your wallet.
- Dave Winer
Nope. If it's necessary, I log out and log them in under the guest account. Trust no one.
- Jeremy Brooks
I struggle with this.. my wife likes to use my home desktop. I bought her a laptop, got her a nice desk as close as mine is, desktop mouse.. still likes to use mine. I might put a new password on it since the hints don't seem to be working. Am I being a jerk?
- Andrej Kyselica
Yes, with a very restricted user account (basically, internet only).
- Jennifer Dittrich
I let people use my computer....as I watch intently over their shoulder...LOL. EDIT: My desktop has always been off limits to anyone. Unless you have the only accessible computer, there is nothing wrong with locking everyone out of it. It's YOUR computer. They can use THEIR computer.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
Depends on who it is and why they're using it. But I had an ex that used to take my laptop and start using it and not understand why it bothered me that he would use it without asking. Had he asked me, I might not have minded so much but the fact that he didn't made me hate it.
- Tamara
Not really, mainly because my computer scares and confuses people (screenshots: http://friendfeed.com/e... ), and besides...most people can't use my vertical mouse. The only person that is comfortable with the layout of my desktop is my daughter (hers is similar), but even she can't use my mouse.
- April Russo (app103)
No. We have an iMac that we all can use, I have a MBP and I bought my hubby a MB Air so he wouldn't touch my stuff! (I, however, am allowed to use the Air :P )
- Penny
Yes, but I'm such a freak about it (make them login under secure guest acct) that they don't ask twice.
- Abbas Haider Ali
I have an account for my fiancee and her daughter because I trust them. Otherwise, nope.
- jcunwired
I don't like people logging on EVEN with guest accounts - I think it's cuz SO many people don't wash their hands after going to the bathroom. Gross.

After fixing my broken gold wedding band numerous times in 8 years, I love my titanium band now. 5 years and still perfectly round.
- Jared B. Luther
Yeah, Jared, had a hard time choosing between a few Titanium, Tungsten and one white gold ring. Went with Tungsten over Titanium as they said that Tungsten is much more scratch resistant...and since they can't easily polish either metal, better to go with the one that doesn't scratch as much. The white gold ring was pretty nice, but wasn't rhodium plated on purpose to give it a yellowish tinge. In the end we all liked this one.
- Alex Scoble
Now YOU have a friend in the diamond business.
- Dawn
It's so true though, Dawn. :) Cliche but true. Well as true as you are going to get in the jewelry business anyhow. You find out just how friendly they are all when you go to sell old jewelry back.
- Alex Scoble
Very nice material & design choices!
- Peter Ghosh
I need to go there and get them to fix my wedding ring. When I had my last surgery, my hand swelled so much they had to cut it off. The worst part is, I hadn't had it off in many years and now my husband can never put it back on me. :( But I still want to wear it.
- Dawn
I forgot to tell you congratulations! It looks great. Does hers match? Ours didn't, because I was a yellow gold girl and he was a white gold guy. :)
- Dawn
Thanks all! No, hers don't match. She has a pretty fancy designer ring from Ritani and the only thing that really matches it are two plain platinum bands sandwiching the engagement ring.
- Alex Scoble
Nice. I bought my husband a new wedding ring for christmas here in france. White gold with little insets that were a different texture. would have loved to have gotten titanium, but it would have broke the bank.
- InPerpetualMotion(Gina k)
Titanium is pretty affordable, Gina, more so than white gold as far as I could see. With gold a large part of the cost is in the materials...with titanium and tungsten most of the cost is in the design and craftsmanship.
- Alex Scoble
That depends on the country you are in at the time. Titanium is still pretty much an american thing, though they are pushing it pretty hard in India. The problem is getting a design that fits my persnickety husband's style ;-)
- InPerpetualMotion(Gina k)
Since The Abyss I always wanted a Titanium ring for those instances when a large bulkhead door was closing and I could stick my hand in to stop it with the ring protecting my hand. :) I'm such a geek.
- CW™
I got Lara's engagement ring at Shane Co. It was a very pleasant experience and it's hard to beat their warranty and maintenance plan. Our wedding bands will probably be coming from this place though: http://handwovenbands.com/
- xero
Well since my marriage has gone to crap I can understand throwing it in the toilet of blue water, but I like my ring too much to do that, plus it fits my enormous fingers. Its not easy to buy rings when your hands are large.
- CW™
LOL, yeah that whole ring plotline in the Abyss is great. And unfortunately with titanium and tungsten rings, there's no sort of warranty they can offer. Can't resize them and can't polish out scratches. Although I'm sure if the ring shatters for some reason they'd replace it.
- Alex Scoble
Yeah the ring has a lot of scratches. Working in a Ops Center moving servers and equipment pretty much scratched it up. It still is nice to have. Light weight on the hand and fits nice so no worry of it falling off.
- CW™
make sure it has a 'comfort fit', trust me, ask them!
- Ryan
It was comfortable to wear, Ryan...that definitely played a part in the decision making process.
- Alex Scoble
One more thanks (sarcastic) I've been looking for a new band since your post!
- @CrystalinaB
Very nice! I had a titanium ring for a while, but was reminded that if one injures the finger so that it starts swelling, a titanium ring can't be cut off your finger. I'd rather have my finger than the wedding band, if it comes down to it. :-)

It's great if you like to see shows that are all about how crappy the life of the protagonist is compared to yours. Otherwise it's predictable. Nothing goes in Jack Bauer's favor and yet he still kicks ass. And mostly saves the day.
- Alex Scoble
I watched the first two seasons, but it lost me at season 3. Never got back into it.
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
I love it. Good show. This season has been better. Jack has one lousy life yet he keeps on trucking. And he can go for 24 hours of hell without taking time to eat, drink, or use the facilities. That's a man's man for ya!
- Jason Shultz
