"“Women want the best of both worlds. Not only a physically attractive man, but somebody in the long term who can provide for them,” the online edition of NewScientist magazine quoted Mark Prokosch, an evolutionary psychologist at Elon University in North Carolina, who led the study, as saying." - Mona N. via Bookmarklet
and thank God for that. . . . - Peter Ghosh CISSP
This part's more interesting: "Women proved to be decent judges of intelligence, with their scores generally matching each man’s intelligence test results. As for picking a bed-mate, the men’s actual smartness proved a reliable indicator of their appeal for both brief hook-ups and serious relationships-which was a surprise. " - Mona N.
how does this explain the proliferation of dumb, neolithic males with attractive women? Though, I have to say that I agree with the revenge of the nerds comment - "jocks spend all day thinking about sports... we think about sex all the time" - alphaxion
So it goes both ways, then. Do you really want to be with the attractive women the dumb, neolithic males are with? - just asking. - Mona N.
I say life is too short, have a Yoohoo! - Terence Washington
I suppose that depends on what a person considers attractive. - alphaxion
Exactly. So why ask for an explanation? ;) - Mona N.
and I wonder if they meant "relatively intelligent" too, which would explain why some people are turned away from those they consider to be too intelligent.. oh, and I have a habit of answering my own questions ;) - alphaxion
I think most men want the same thing - by day: Madame Curie, by night: Barbarella on spanish fly - Peter Ghosh CISSP
Peter: That's what they *think* they want, in my experience. ;) Same with salaries. Men SAY they wouldn't mind a woman with a higher income but often times, not. ;) - Mona N.
@Mona it's always been my dream to be a kept man, leaving me to my fun but non-paying hobbies. - Jason Carreira
Seems women want projects, men they can save, men that require saving, more than you might think. - Dave "Maverick" Winer
Ya right Jason. Cyndy will kick your ass if you ever served instant coffee. (I'm NEVER going to let you live that one down. Even if you were just kidding. HA!) - Mona N.
Often does not translate into every time :-) - Peter Ghosh CISSP
I'm just speaking from personal experience, Peter. What about you? :) - Mona N.
hehe, my gf knows that as soon as she gets a well paid job in the gaming industry I'm jacking in my full time job (provided I haven't already) and letting her keep me for a while ;) - alphaxion
And you'll be ok sitting at home? Interesting. - Mona N.
I'll be working on producing podcasts and writing :) - alphaxion
I'm happy that you will be working towards your dream, but these are serious factors you should take into consideration. Are you truly going to be ok with her being the bread winner? It sounds really old fashioned but I've seen many relationships fail because the woman makes more than the man. (myself included) - Mona N.
Any brute can go out for the day and come back with meat. A nerd can invent a system for more efficiently stocking the cave, leaving more time to address other needs and wants. - £ogical €xtremes
So then, comes the question: "As a nerd, are you ok with a female being 'smarter' than you?" - Mona N.
at the moment I'm bank rolling her through uni so she can get her degree.. I don't care if she makes substantially more than I do in the future, I'll be really happy that she is finally getting the career she has wanted for so long. I've had enough of slaving away in the IT department. I want the fun of doing something I really enjoy for a change! - alphaxion
I think these kind of things are funny, because they have a non-evolutionary explanation: these are people who are genuinely interested in women as people, and for obvious reasons, women find that attractive. - Jamelle
@ Mona - My girlfriend is a biology and biochemistry major, who spent her summer doing nanotechnology research overseas. She's a hell of a lot smarter than me, and I think it's hot. - Jamelle
When I was dating, I went out with a few ditzes. Nice people, but I couldn't stand it after a while because it was exhausting. I need someone intelligent. Income doesn't matter much. More is nice because it puts less pressure on me, but less seems to work as well. - Peter Ghosh CISSP
which, may I add I'm finally getting with my 2nd job... I just need to concentrate on turning it into my main line of work ;) - alphaxion
mona: I prefer to be in the company of people I can not only hold a convo with but people whom I can also learn from as well as impart knowledge to. While I may know a lot about science and tech, my gf puts me to shame with art and music.. so we both introduce new things to each other and enrichen each others lives. - alphaxion
Jamelle: What field are you in, if you don't mind me asking. And your gf sounds amazing! - Mona N.
my husband considers me intelligent and is often blown away not only by what i know but that i can hold my own in conversations with others. he thinks that's sexy. as for the money thing, i don't know. all the women i know make more money than the men i know. some of them are in happy relationships, some not. my old neighborhood was full of SAHDs, moms in exec/upper mgmt. positions and they seemed happy. - Faboo Mama
Has been my findings too. But doesn't it go both ways? It does for me. I'm way more attracted to geek girls. And on the talk of salary, i'd love it if she made more than me. @alphaxion is it really possible to consider someone too intelligent? It's probably like looks right? There's a range which someone will accept in their partner. Most people's upper limit isn't bound but the lower limit is usually not much lower than themselves. - d[▪_▪]b ♫
Mona, I am OK with the lady making more money and being smarter... Heck, just about everyone on FF I follow is smarter than me, and I'm no lame duck. My wife, in her present line of work, could potentially make more than me with half the hours... Great article BTW. - ChangeForge | Ken Stewart
Faboo Mama: Perhaps it's my social circle (in real life), since most of us are unwed with no children. I personally know a few unhappily married couples (with responsibilities: mortgage, retirement, kids, etc.) where the female makes more, the male unhappy and cheats. Yet they won't get divorced because there is just way too much at stake... :\ - Mona N.
NiceRobot: Yes, but are you ok with the female having more intuitive insight, especially when it comes to 'geek' things? Or what if she had more experience than you? Or in a higher management position? @Ken: You are a lot 'smarter' than you give yourself credit for, by reading what you wrote. ;) - Mona N.
With all the recent political discussion about the anti-intellectualism of "common" America, it's nice to know there are people who find intelligence attractive. Wish more people valued the "brain ethic" of always trying to improve ourselves. - Mike Reynolds
I'm sensing a gradual, cultural shift, just in these comments here. I would guess it depend on where you live, and the type of work the couples do. Hell, here in Northern NV, most of the couples you find here are the ones where the man still makes more than the women. Back in the BA, I also knew many of the same types of couples that Mona has. Again, it appears (to me) having to deal with the cultural shift. I'm surprised this article came out of the Times of India, even! - Mavericks of Troy, NV!
Geeks do not want management positions. - Jason Carreira
And, just to verify, jocks always turned me off. I've always been attracted to a good looking guy with a brain. - Mavericks of Troy, NV!
Mike: AGREED! @Helen: It is fascinating, isn't it? Back when I was in school, Geeks were DEFINITELY not hot. I had to dumb myself down A LOT to attract the good-looking semi-smart ones. Even in college, I had issues since they were still boys, and not in tune with themselves. Caused a lot of issues. @Jason: Not true. The biggest geek I dated is now a SVP of R and D ;) - Mona N.
@ Mona, Well, at this point, I'm really not in a "field" per say. But I do study politics and religion at a well-regarded university somewhere on the east coast. - Jamelle
@mona almost everyone i've dated has been better than me intellectually in many respects and i'm no slouch. It's a big part of why i liked them. It'll be hard for her to beat me in my field (not because she's a woman, because i'm very good) but i'd absolutely love it if she were better than me. I'm not really competitive nor egotistical when it comes to intelligence and insight. I just love it in good people regardless of how it relates to mine. - d[▪_▪]b ♫
@Mona then he's lost his geek cred ;) - Jason Carreira
Jamelle: If you were studying the same discipline, would it be a blow to your ego if she was 'smarter' than you? d[▪_▪]b ♫: Really? Not competitive at all? I'm envious. ;) @Jason: He still gets down and dirty! ;) - Mona N.
@mona i didn't say not competitive "at all" :) I don't feel a need to compete intellectuality. Most people will have something worthy to contribute so i learn from anyone without a need to better them. I compete in games and with everyone in my field so that i can prove i earn my salary :) - d[▪_▪]b ♫
Mona, unfortunately, intelligence is still not prized in many high schools across this country. I paid my price for refusing to dumb myself down in high school. Sad, no? - Mavericks of Troy, NV!
@ Mona - Honestly, not at all. The nice part about being surrounded by very intelligent people is that you learn to unhook your ego from your intelligence. - Jamelle
d[▪_▪]b ♫, :) @Helen: Smart, not sad. ;) @Jamelle: You would think, right? Unfortunately in my experience it's the opposite... and the clash of egos still continue professionally! ugh!! - Mona N.
nah, it's that women are biologically drawn to strong men who can handle the shows. smart men (aka, geeks) can come off like that. i will pick brains over looks in a man without even meaning to most of the time. - Patricia

People who feel like they don't have control of their lives are more likely to believe in conspiracy theories. - Amit Patel
That whole article is a conspiracy. Read with caution. - torque
I find pattern finding gives me a sense of control, Too bad they did not address that at all. - Clare Dibble
I'm pretty sure all human minds are wired for pattern-finding. - Gabe
That's what they want you to think. - Jim Norris
This is a good article on the growth of conspiracy theories of late: http://www.spiked-online.com/i... "Sometimes it appears as if Western societies have regressed, adopting a medieval attitude towards calamitous acts." - Andrew Leyden
It's a shame that they don't talk about 'attribution' in the article. It's pretty obvious and well understood that human minds recognize patterns in pretty much whatever we look at. A conspiracy theory arises when people attribute a particular pattern to a group of identifiable, intentional actors, without evidence that the actors themselves exist. For example - it's clearly not a conspiracy theory to say that a group of investors were working in concert to undermine the economy, so the pattern is real.. - Robin Barooah
...it only becomes a conspiracy theory when people say "a group of investors were working in concert to undermine the economy because they are part of a conspiracy to enslave americans, (or whatever).". The part that is shaky is that there is no evidence that the group has such an intention or even identifies itself as a group. - Robin Barooah
OTOH, mature pattern-finders has learned that society doesn't take their skills for granted and tend to explain *irregularities* not with coup'detat but ignorance, complacency and common stupidity ;) - silpol
Just because it's a conspiracy theory, doesn't mean it isn't true. - Chris White

There is a fine line between being realistic, sharp, challenging, even skeptical, and being an asshole. I sometimes worry that late arrivals to Google didn't get to experience the earlier culture where we pushed each other to think hard but it never got personal. - Christopher Sacca
Ah, the old "say 'fuck' a lot and act like a huge racist dick and it'll make me seem important" strategy. Funny how people can spend years at Google but not pick up an ounce of Googlyness. - Benjy Weinberger
Amen, Benjy. Goes for any company, actually. - Rob Schonberger
@sacca: I arrived sorta late (Jan '06) and definitely got to experience the good culture... and I think it still exists though by nature it's fragile. Oddly, in contrast to Peter's comment, some of the most Googly people I've worked with are ex-msft. - Moishe Lettvin

In my experience, it's rare for a VC to add any "value" other than writing a check. In fact there are some great examples of .coom startups which were ruined when the VCs took executive control and screwed up the company's direction. - Dave Saunders via twhirl

“Am I the only one who think the stock market could go down if the bailout succeeds?”
September 30 at 4:14 pm - Link
no... it should rebound on a vote of confidence - Susan Beebe
Rebounding will be temporary. The media is telling everyone it should rebound, so it may at first. But then people will realize that what's been advertised for the last two weeks is that our economy is messed. - Chris White
Agreed. I'd bet on a temporary lift until folks looked again and realized that housing wasn't out of the woods (by a long shot), dollar was still weak, inflation rising and energy still costly. [edit] I'm a broken record, but we have three years of Alt-A loan resets to come. Alt-A = loans given on credit score only, no income documentation necessary. - AJ Kohn
AJ, I agree about the Alt-A. We've had all these exotic loans since 2002, and they are going to hit the economy like waves now. I love that the CEO of RE/Max was on CNBC today campaigning for the bailout bill. I have no love for real estate agents saying "housing prices never go down." - Chris White
The market will go up on the first sign of confidence, so yes, seeing how the government adds crap into the bill just to get it to pass - it will, and so will the market in the short term. But the bill is about to give the final blow to the already-weak dollar. We're all going to be very sorry we let this thing pass. - Aviv

Neil, those farms are cheap because they're sun-bleached God-forsaken wastelands that can hardly support a few mangy kangaroos and a zillion or so blowflies. :-) - Bill Hooker

I don't think I'd actually farm. I'd just, you know, hang out and chop wood. - Neil Saunders
Shirley, you can come work on my farm any time you're in Maryland. I have a couple goats that like human attention and plenty of wood to chop. I don't plant any fields, though, because my property is all hardwood forest. Plenty of fields of crops next door, though. - Jim Hardy
Thanks, Jim! I'll keep that option in mind. @Cameron, hard work yes, but not necessarily less enjoyable or gratifying. Sometimes I just need something tangible. - Shirley Wu
Oh, that's easy then - get in a lab and do some proper science :-) - Cameron Neylon
Cameron, I am preparing some "proper science" on the homestead. Taking the Stamets "Saving the World Through Mushrooms" route. One advantage to having hardwoods and 11 acres of a steep north-facing hillside is that I have plenty of substrate for cultivating 'shrooms. So I plan to "Get into the woods" and do some proper science! - Jim Hardy
@cameron - touche! Except I prefer the lab of the great outdoors. Too many goggles and gloves and chemicals and breakable things for me in the wet lab. @Jim - sounds like a recipe for creative visions, something science can't do without! - Shirley Wu
