"Now that Sarah Palin has been found to have abused her powers, violated state ethics, and lied about it, I did a little digging and found an interesting historical footnote. The McCain/Palin ticket is the first in American history in which both candidates were found to have violated ethics standards before a national election." - Clint Ecker via Bookmarklet

"I started watching the critically-acclaimed series Mad Men on DVD over the summer, and I am enjoying it a lot. I was a little kid in the early 1960s. Watching it is like stepping back in time. People really did used to smoke and drink like that. Of course, the show is set in the early 1960s, so I had to write a “Typecasting” piece about it." - Clint Ecker via Bookmarklet

"From the team that brought you Mail Goggles, here comes...Advanced IMAP Controls, a Labs feature that lets you fine-tune your Gmail IMAP experience. You can choose which labels to sync in IMAP -- useful if you find your mail client choking on a big [Gmail]/All Mail folder. After enabling this Lab, just go to the Labels tab under Settings. You'll see a new 'Show in IMAP' checkbox next to each of your labels. Uncheck the box and the corresponding folder will disappear from IMAP." -- Thank god. "The rabid nature of the scene has startled longtime political observers and even former associates of McCain himself. John Weaver, the Senator's former top strategist, has said McCain is making a tactical mistake by letting abusive hecklers have their voices heard during his forums. David Gergen, a longtime Washington strategist, has warned that the rhetoric from these attendees could "lead to some violence." Veteran Republican Congressman Ray LaHood criticized Sarah Palin in particular, saying her rhetoric did not "befit the office she's running for."" - Clint Ecker via Bookmarklet

"Earlier today, Obama remarked on recent outbursts of "Traitor!" "Terrorist!" and "Kill him!" at McCain campaign events. "It's easy to rile up a crowd," Obama said. "Nothing's easier than riling up a crowd by stoking anger and division. But that's not what we need right now in the United States." In response, McCain senior adviser Nicolle Wallace released this statement, NBC's Kelly O'Donnell reports. "Barack Obama's assault on our supporters is insulting and unsurprising. These are the same people obama called 'bitter' and attacked for 'clinging to guns' and faith." - Clint Ecker via Bookmarklet
McCain defends racist, jingoistic, hate speech. Fully endorses calls to kill Obama and the lies being spread about his "terorrist nature." This is the McCain campaign's implosion. They have nothing left in their arsenal besides hate, vitriol, and racism. - Clint Ecker
here's what really worries me. there will be a group of folks who will not 'come down' off this 'anger rush' after the election. they'll be stuck w/ a bag of hate and fear. and they'll carry that into their everyday lives for quite a while. McCain's people are stoking this kind of sickness and we'll all end up paying for it. - MikeAmundsen
exactly clint. this campaign by mccain has derailed into a sad spectacle inspired/motivated by racism, petulance, double-speak, fear and derision. i didn't even dislike this guys as much as i do know, but he's done nothing right over the last three-four weeks. he's a sad man -- he his hoarde of hate-mongers - Cee Bee
Mike that scares me too. - Bored
i'm mentally preparing for some really hurting folks after election day. some will surely be depressed. some will be angry. i'm gonna try to be neither. - MikeAmundsen
The fact that McCain is pursuing this strategy at a time when the economy is in trouble terrifies me. Not just because he's focusing on the wrong issues, but because of the interplay. Enraged people + hard times is a recipe for something resembling civil war. - Erik S

"Those who press this Ayers line of attack are whipping Republicans and conservatives into a fury that is going to be very hard to calm after November. Is it really wise to send conservatives into opposition in a mood of disdain and fury for a man who may well be the next president of the United States, incidentally the first African-American president? Anger is a very bad political adviser. It can isolate us and push us to the extremes at exactly the moment when we ought to be rebuilding, rethinking, regrouping and recruiting. I’m not suggesting that we remit our opposition to a hypothetical President Obama. Only that an outgunned party will need to stay cool. A big part of Obama’s appeal is his self-command. It’s a genuinely impressive quality. Let’s emulate it. We’ll be needing it." - Clint Ecker via Bookmarklet

Apple announces October 14 notebook event in Cupertino

"As you are likely aware, October 14 has been widely rumored for several weeks now as the official date for Apple's update to the MacBook and MacBook pro line. Some of us had our doubts (myself included) that such an update would end up being announced during an Apple event, but Apple has come through once again.  What can we expect from this event? No one knows for sure, but supposedly leaked photos have been spreading across the web as of late. Ars will be there (with photos this time!) covering it live on our front page." - Clint Ecker via Bookmarklet

"McCain misstated his own health care plan, saying he’d give a $5,000 tax credit to “every American” His plan actually would provide only $2,500 per individual, or $5,000 for couples and families. He also misstated Obama’s health care plan, claiming it would levy fines on “small businesses” that fail to provide health insurance. Actually, Obama’s plan exempts “small businesses.”" - Clint Ecker via Bookmarklet
"McCain lamented that the U.S. was forced to “withdraw in humiliation” from Somalia in 1994, but he failed to note that he once proposed to cut off funding for troops to force a faster withdrawal." - Clint Ecker
"McCain claimed “1.3 million people in America make their living off eBay.” Actually, only 724,000 persons in the U.S. have income from eBay, and only some of them rely on it as their primary source." - Clint Ecker
McCain press release: The direct cost of this plan would be roughly $300 billion because the purchase of mortgages would relieve homeowners of “negative equity” in some homes. ... It may be necessary for Congress to raise the overall borrowing limit. Minutes later, McCain was attacking Obama for proposing what he said was $860 billion in new spending. - Clint Ecker
"Obama’s plan requires large businesses to provide coverage for their employees or pay into a national plan, not "small businesses," as McCain said. Obama's health care proposal, posted on his Web site, says: “Small businesses will be exempt from this requirement.”" - Clint Ecker
"McCain repeated an error he made in the last debate when he said, "In Lebanon, I stood up to President Reagan, my hero, and said, if we send Marines in there, how can we possibly beneficially affect this situation? And said we shouldn't. Unfortunately, almost 300 brave young Marines were killed." In fact, as we noted previously, McCain wasn't elected until three months after the Marines had been deployed. He did vote against the post-hoc War Powers Act authorization of the deployment; Reagan signed it into law in October 1983, 11 days before a suicide bomber set off a blast that killed 241 servicemembers in their barracks. - Clint Ecker

"Palin's routine attacks on the media have begun to spill into ugliness. In Clearwater, arriving reporters were greeted with shouts and taunts by the crowd of about 3,000. Palin then went on to blame Katie Couric's questions for her "less-than-successful interview with kinda mainstream media." At that, Palin supporters turned on reporters in the press area, waving thunder sticks and shouting abuse. Others hurled obscenities at a camera crew. One Palin supporter shouted a racial epithet at an African American sound man for a network and told him, "Sit down, boy."" - Clint Ecker via Bookmarklet

not that I don't think that she's a big phony in lots if ways, but 1) I think it was slate that had a piece that explained that "ya, they really do talk that at up dere" and 2) accents can be pretty fluid. People tend to adjust there way of speaking unconsciouly to their social environment. I've seen this in myself as I notice some words I say with a hint of my wife's Texas twang, and my wife's accent gets a lot stronger when talking to people back home. - Erik S
