"John McCain is desperate to talk about the surge rather than the splurge. His Iraq war is set to cost one trillion dollars, and his deregulation-mania has cost hundreds of billions. So in order to maintain his façade of being "tough on spending", he needs to shift the subject. That's why he has tried to shrink the debate about the Iraq War to one small question. Not: did Saddam have Weapons of Mass Destruction? Not: did Saddam have links to 9/11? Not: why do 70 percent of Iraqis think the presence of US troops make them less safe and they should go home now?" - Clint Ecker via Bookmarklet

"In fact, the current economic woes look a lot like what my 96-year-old grandmother still calls "the real Great Depression." She pinched pennies in the 1930s, but she says that times were not nearly so bad as the depression her grandparents went through. That crash came in 1873 and lasted more than four years. It looks much more like our current crisis." - Clint Ecker via Bookmarklet

"A review of records of the schools project and interviews with a dozen people who know both men, suggest that Mr. Obama, 47, has played down his contacts with Mr. Ayers, 63. But the two men do not appear to have been close." - newsjunk.com
No... they jsut shared a number of close professional ties and Ayers got Obama's political career started. Why, they hardly met. Even Obama said he was jsut some guy who "live sin my neighborhood" - oh wait, that was a lie. - Soulhuntre via twhirl
Relationships between each other aside, will we ever go beyond the idea that mistakes made in the past must forever haunt all of us? Last I looked, one of the freedoms we fight for is the ability to succeed in America, despite the odds. Ayers made mistakes, he moved beyond them, and he has become successful. If actions from each of our histories predicate what we can accomplish, and who we can befriend, then we are all screwed. - Shout out 2Jody
Not a good move by the McCain campaign. If associations are scrutinized, there are none closer of the four candidates than Charles Keating. To my knowledge Obama's relationships between Ayers, Rezko, Wright, etc. haven't cost the taxpayers anything. The Keating affair, $124.6 billion. - Shout out 2Jody

Soulhuntre - Please prove that Ayers got Obama's political career started. I would love to see how you rationalize that statement. - Andrew Burd
Andrew he can't prove it because it's 100% false. You'll probably get a link to some fringe radical like Malkin or Hannity. - Faboo Mama
"When Obama made his first run for political office, articles in both the Chicago Defender and the Hyde Park Herald featured among his qualifications his position as chairman of the board of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, a foundation where Ayers was a founder and guiding force. Obama assumed the Annenberg board chairmanship only months before his first run for office, and almost certainly received the job at the behest of Bill Ayers." http://article.nationalreview.... - Charles LePage
"When Obama first ran for the Illinois Senate in the mid-1990s, Ayers and his wife hosted a reception at their home for Obama to meet other Democrats." http://www.chron.com/disp/stor... - Brian Newman
"In 1995, State Senator Alice Palmer introduced her chosen successor, Barack Obama, to a few of the district's influential liberals at the home of two well known figures on the local left: William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn...." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/... - Brian Newman
I'll admit some will consider Huffington a "fringe radical". - Brian Newman
So at best, there was a political reception at his house in 1995 for Obama... therefore he started Obama's political career? You see that this is a stretch, right? - Andrew Burd
I would say his political career got started at Ayers' house, yes. Ayers hosted his political coming out party. Sen. Palmer introduced Obama as her successor to all her influential liberal buddies there. Some guy who lives in his neighborhood? You see that that is a stretch, right? - Brian Newman
Oh my, this really proves that Obama is unfit to lead, and is probably a terrorist himself! That's it, my mind is changed. Wow, you guys are good! ::sarcasm off:: - Shout out 2Jody
The question was about Obama's relationship with Ayers, not whether he is fit to lead or not. - Brian Newman
I think it's a stretch to say that he is just some guy who lives in his neighborhood. But I think it is entirely fair to say that any connection is tenuous. If someone is working in the same field and same area as you, chances are you are going to bump into them professionally. And I think that is exactly how this seems to have played out. Ayers didn't bestow his career on him. He had a party 13 years ago. - Andrew Burd
Andrew, this is Gumby politics at its finest. Expect a lot more twisting, morphing and stretching in the next month. - Shout out 2Jody
Has the New York Times published any similar stories about Jeremiah Wright? - Thomas Ho via fftogo
Sarah and Todd Palin's ties to the America-hating secessionist Alaskan Independent Party are much more substantive than Obama's ties to Ayers. Joe Vogler, the founder of the Alaskan Independence Party, professed his "hatred for the American government" in 1991 and cursed the American flag as a "damn flag." Both Palins have maintained close connections to the AIP. - Sean McBride
Vogler was the craggy, fire-breathing secessionist who founded the Alaskan independence movement in the early 1970s. Among the colorful Vogler quotes now in circulation are "I'm an Alaskan, not an American. I've got no use for America or her damned institutions." Then there's "The fires of hell are glaciers compared to my hate for the American government." And "The problem with you John Birchers is that you are too damn liberal!"" - Sean McBride

“Thought experiment: if Sarah Palin was a registered Democrat whose political views adhered closely to the party line and was selected as Barack Obama's VP candidate, would you still be poking fun at her voice, her family, her choice of words, and her pronunciation?”
Friday at 7:28 pm - Link
YES!! she is NOT fit for OFFICE no matter what party she is affiliated with. Her lack of qualification is such a huge gap it is utterly astounding to me that she was even considered for such a noble and serious executive office position. I am disgusted that the Republicans have insulted my intelligence to throw such a colloquial candidate out in the lime light in the hopes of garnering votes...what a cheap, low shot - despicable. - Susan Beebe
I'd be writing the Obama campaign and demanding my money back. - Cyndy
hell yes. we have a few such democrats in various offices here in ca. woefully underqualified, elected based on looks and atrocious at their jobs. - Faboo Mama
Democrats wouldn't need to because the Republicans would be busy filling that role. - LPH
It would be a travesty, yes, but to be honest...we'd be doing the same thing that Republicans are doing...half heartedly "rah rahing" her on while thinking to ourselves "this doesn't look good." Same thing we did last election. - Alex "Maverick" Scoble
If Sarah Palin were a democrat, she wouldn't have been chosen for office. She'd have been ripped apart by the Democrats before she even got to prime time. You've got to be shrewd to make it to the top among the Democracts. The vetoing process is more real there. (Having said that, what in the world is Nancy Pelosi doing as Speaker of the House?) - Raoul Pop
1) her lack of grammar and presentation is because she is uncomfortable in her position, and does not know this stuff cold. 2) the republican party forgiving this lack of experience makes me even more cutting - and if my party did put someone as unqualified, I'd also have a TON of problems with it. 3) I don't care about her accent - she sounds like my midwestern relatives and that makes me actually like her, and want to give her a chance. 4) I'm not making fun of her family, either. - anna
Yes. She is unqualified. Were you not paying attention to the Democratic primaries this year? The razor thin difference between Obama and Clinton was more than enough to start internet blood fueds. What do you think would have happened in the Democratic Party if either Clinton or Obama picked such a moron like Palin? - Steven Perez
Yes. I would criticize her the same way I do now. I am not a Biden fan boy ether. But I don't make jokes on her family. But wait... Maybe I make some jokes about that too. We will see. - ※Fu※
@Alex See, I wouldn't. When Obama announced Biden, I turned to Jason and asked if Obama was kidding. Biden is a smart guy, and I agree with many of his beliefs but he's such a loose cannon I figured he'd be a huge detriment to the campaign. I just underestimated what a trainwreck choice McCain would come up with. The only way Obama could have done worse would be to have chosen Pelosi. - Cyndy
@Glen I don't think people pick on her voice, family, and choice of words because she's a Republican, I think they do it because there is simply no substance to her as a VP candidate. If she had formidable things to say, some clear thought leadership (other than her position on dinosaurs+man on earth at the same time), then the rest would get ignored. She's had ample opportunity to dazzle us with anything beyond "hockey maaaam", and has fallen flat. I'm truly horrified that she could win. - Jeremy Toeman
Yeah, Cyndy...but I don't see myself ever voting for a Republican...They just don't want to lead us in the direction that I think we should be going. - Alex "Maverick" Scoble
I've poked fun at none of the above. Its her lack of experience, and the audacity of McCain to put campaign before country, that I oppose. I would have criticized Obama the same had he made a similar choice. - Shout out 2Jody
Uhm..yes. She is annoying as hell. She doesn't even appear to know what's going on. Like..*really know* what's going on. - Rahsheen™
The focus on Palin's artifice is because she gives us nothing else to go on. I watched the debates and re-read the transcripts last night, and her points did not get across. Well, except the one about global warming not being manmade. That's what ratchets her up to hilarity for me. She is also one of the most sexist politicians I've ever seen. And, of course, her lack of knowledge about the economy and foreign affairs. - anna
I'd make fun of Biden but I can't really find anything, as bad, or sadly, as pitiful, as what Palin has showed us. - anna
Here's the thing, I make fun (kinda) of McCain and his family. I happily picked on every misstep every republican makes...bush, cheney, whomever. So...how come when we go after Palin everyone gets so touchy? Also, pointing out Palin's huge inexperience is really relevant in my eyes because there are so many QUALIFIED female GOP leaders. - Erin Kotecki Vest
Rahsheen, she doesn't even *pretend* to know what's going on well. Banana, they got across extremely well to the right, apparently. Her praises are being sung both low and lower. :-) Sexy? Uggghh I couldn't get drunk enough! - Shout out 2Jody
Erin, its become apparent since Bush came into office that the less qualified (i.e. stupid) Republicans' choice is, the more vehemently their choice will be defended. - Shout out 2Jody
@Jody SexIST (not sexiest, haha), and, I think that positing someone with an accent and education that puts them in a working class background sets them up to get criticism, and then the republicans can weigh in with "classist! classist" (kind of like this thread here...) if only they did that with someone qualified, and they'd be right :) - anna
Pheuff!! ::wipes brow:: Thanks for clearing that up! - Shout out 2Jody
lol - anna
Yes, absolutely. Agree with Susan 100% - Sally Church
Thought experiment: Who has an opinion without "maverick" in their name? ;) hee - Jay Tannenbaum
Bases solely on her record as Governor of Alaska Palin is more than qualified. By any and all other measurements Obama is completely unqualified. - Peter Simard
What's really funny to me is that Democrats are supposedly the ones who care about others and are oh-so-tolerant of everybody, and Republicans supposedly only care about the rich and look down their noses on "lessers." Yet the overwhelming majority of comments from Democrats about Palin are so snobbish, it's laughable. - Dawn
LOL @ Peter Simard! The fact that the debates and other situations have to be "dumbed down" so that Palin can participate proves that she is not ready for the job. No one is dumbing down anything for Obama because of his "lack of experience". She's about to be in a position to control the most powerful country in the world... The rest of the world isn't going to dumb anything down for her. If she can't handle the pressure she doesn't need to be a candidate. - Lindsay Donaghe
Palin has had an UNBELIEVABLE amount of pressure put on her since getting this nomination just 5 WEEKS ago. If Obama had just been suddenly plucked out of nowhere but his own experience, how would he have done? Obama has literally thousands of advisors telling him what to do and say, and has had over two years to gear up for this. Their only difference in "experience" is that he's been running for high national office 25 times longer than Palin. - Dawn
Lindsey could it be that most things designed for the general public have to be "dumbed-down?" Newspapers are written at, what, 6th or 7th grade English level? Not everyone capable of understanding complex strategies on a variety of different subjects, and for the general populace to understand, say, foreign relations with an unfriendly nation, it has to be "dumbed-down" a little. - Mark VandenBerg
@Dawn - the current meme in twitch media is that anyone who objects to the insults and abuse being heaped on large portions of the electorate are just too stupid to know whats good for them. You see it in comment after comment. They repeatedly don't consider the difference between elitism and actually being elite :) - Soulhuntre
@Glen - the answer to your OP is no. If Obama had picked her it would have been an inspired, amazing choice to get a Washington outsider. A true indication of "hope and change". They would have loved the executive experience she added to the ticked and been wildly supportive of how well she connects with "the people" (who they continually invoke, but clearly despise as idiots). - note, when I say "they" i mean the majority of the anti-Palin zealots who attack her voice, family, hair etc. - Soulhuntre
Yes. It has nothing to do with her gender, voice, mannerisms, or home state. It has everything to do with her cluelessness, her inability to perform a simple one-one interview with someone, debate simple talking points in a controlled debate, call up basic facts about the world, or be straightforward with the america population. The GOP like to spin it the other way because they want everyone to feel sorry for her and ignore the blatant and glaring holes in her record of inexperience and unfitness. - Clint Ecker
Yes, I poke fun at John Kerry (who is infinitely more qualified than Palin, btw) for his dour tone, repetitiveness and lack of enthusiasm and backbone as a candidate on a regular basis. - Bren
@Glen: you've got one doozy of a list assumptions in your rhetorical question : 1) holding views that adhere to the partly line is a qualification for office; 2) a candidate's speaking skills are *not* an indicator of qualification for office; 3) a candidate's family *is* an indicator of qualification for office; and 4) poking fun is a bad thing. otherwise, good Q! - MikeAmundsen
@Dawn you make a lot of interesting assumptions; I'm a blue collar kid who happens to be fiscally conservative, my hero was Maggie Thatcher. I like US pols such as Romney, Powell and Bloomberg, but neither McCain nor Palin is in their league. Expressing an intense dislike of the GOP ticket is not snobby but rather a desire to be inspired, for something bigger and better for this country. America deserves better than McCain/Palin on the world stage. - Sally Church
Sally: Dislike over policy is one thing. The "white trash" comments and all the endless derivatives thereof -- knocking everything from her accent to her hair to her laugh to her clothing to her gestures to her family, ... the topic at hand! -- is indeed snobbery. - Dawn
to me it doesn't matter what party she represents. she is still a joke. - Paulo via twhirl
There is no conceivable way that the Democratic Party would choose someone like George W. Bush as a presidential candidate or Sarah Palin as a vice presidential candidate. The Democratic Party has higher intellectual standards -- seriously. The Republican Party these days is dominated by militantly and stridently anti-intellectual zealots who hold the life of the mind in contempt. Conservatism used to be a movement with high intellectual standards -- all that has been lost. - Sean McBride
Sarah Palin: Bush in skirts. - Sean McBride
My thanks to Scoble for reading the minds of Republicans everywhere. For my part, my support of Palin is not half hearted. I still think she was a great choice, and if McCain does not win the election, I believe you will see more of Palin down the line. No one can honestly say she is less qualified than Obama. - Charles LePage
Charles LePage: does Sarah Palin sound like someone who is qualified to serve as vice president or president? "As Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border. MSNBC: McCain campaign says it will go wildly negative on Obama's character through October
Saturday at 5:26 am - Link
Sen. John McCain and his Republican allies are readying a newly aggressive assault on Sen. Barack Obama's character, believing that to win in November they must shift the conversation back to questions about the Democrat's judgment, honesty and personal associations, several top Republicans said. With just a month to go until Election Day, McCain's team has decided that its emphasis on the senator's biography as a war hero, experienced lawmaker and straight-talking maverick is insufficient to close a growing gap with Obama. - Chris Baskind

Drudge is basically a GOP house organ. That they're running as their lead right now -- over the OJ story -- some spurious little slander from Moose Palin, you know where the McCain camp is heading. It's time to connect the dots between the Keating 5 and McCain's irresponsible, lobbyist-driven "free market" history of deregulation. Not a maverick; not a reformer; not a safe choice to run the economy. - Chris Baskind
Chris B- and Sen. Obama is with Franklin Raines who pocketed $90 million from the Failure of Fannie Mae. The man is a thief and a crook and needs to be in jail. Sen. Obama's judgement in having Raines as an advisor in his campaign is beyond appalling. - Paul W. Swansen
Please don't bring up judgement. P-A-L-I-N. - dkb

McCain is a pig. He wants so bad to pull Obama down into the mud with him. I'm fairly confident that the voting population will not react kindly. - Clint Ecker
asshole! - Shawn Hildebrandt
It may look bad the more negative he goes and Obama stands above the fray. In fact, McCain may make Obama appear more Presidential that way. It's the last Hail Mary of a desperate man. Sad. - Sally Church
using ad hominem attacks [http://bit.ly/3Uqtdf] as the primary tactic shows a lack of substance in the attacker's claims; appeals to emotion rather than reason; and mobilizes fear/hate instead of trust. those who win on these terms end up w/ a following of untrustworthy, fearful, self-centered followers who spend time gaming the system, plundering resources, and abusing the losers. "politics of fear is the last resort of the incompetent." - MikeAmundsen
I agree with Sally...this is a desperate play by a desperate campaign. It's seriously starting to feel like they just didn't bring their A game, whereas Obama's ground strategy is very good. He's got a lot of energized campaigners and they are well organized. From what I can tell, that's not the case for the McCain campaign. So all the dirty tricks in the book won't make a difference. - Alex "Maverick" Scoble
Well, they're already spending $1.3M a month on attack ads. Those are the ONLY kinds of ads they're running. Not one ad telling you about McCain and what he'll do. Stinks of desperation and is highly comical considering that in 2000 he was decrying these sorts of ads and as recently as 3 months ago, saying that he would never run these sorts of ads. - Faboo Mama

Play a thought game for a moment. If someone worked for a big site like CNet, and really thought highly of their fellow authors' coverage and felt their publication produced the best content, bar none, onjust every topic out there, wouldn't you be just a little inclined to internally link to that content? There are some tech news sites that I believe produce the best tech coverage every post, every day of the freaking week. That's no reason to never out-link; it's very necessary in many instances--and contrary to popular social-media-webcock dogma, there is *no* modern tech site that never out-links--but if your publication has got 9 previous stories at your organization and all your stuff is stellar: link, baby, link! - Clint Ecker
