Sean, if only I knew. This was delivered directly to me fresh and hot.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Wow, whatever you do, don't google "Asian guys at beach licking" if you want to find the Flickr account for this. No, seriously. Just...don't. o.O
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
changed my life forever...I will always go to the beach with a a few chubby buddies after porking myself up for those bosoms ~ and this image is most definitely going in the ol' spank bank
- sofarsoShawn
Remember ! I bring quality product to Friend Feed !:)
- Akiva Moskovitz
you know what would be funny: ok bear with me, if we blindfolded leather donut (you know the booby man) and...yeah fill in the blanks...something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch...
- sofarsoShawn
Sir, randomly linking to your FriendFeed from one of my posts is oh wait you'll never see this because you're blocked for spamming. Thanks anyway, kaghazrangy.
- Akiva Moskovitz
damn this picture just won't go away - you have forced me to hide it
- William Harryman
Akiva, wasn't that pic taken at your last BBQ?
- Paul
Every time I see this picture I smile. Their joy is infectious, like herpes.
- Sparky
Paul, I surely do wish I had a beach in my back yard!
- Akiva Moskovitz
Sparky, I'm going to have this blown up to poster-size and attaching it to the ceiling above our bed. That'll cause some infections!
- Akiva Moskovitz
makes me want to grow a rack and diddle with my own, know what I'm saying?
- sofarsoShawn
this. . . .this. . . ugh . . . so fucking wrong.
- Peter Ghosh
Akiva - you can put anything you want above our bed.
- Sparky
i've been trying to formulate a comment for this for days, but i just...can't.
- joey
I still want to know the motivation here. is this a gay marriage argument? or are we already pushing group social contracts on friendfeed?
- Noah David Simon
oh man this one keeps popping up on ma friendfeed,....must spread virus nao
- Chris Hofmann
I'm surprised no one's noticed old boy's red-framed glasses.
- Akiva Moskovitz
oh right... the glasses are so important when three asian men are licking his nipples and all the comments are by people who think gay marriage has something to do with equality... when it has everything to do with taking protections away from children. the red glass glasses.... um yeah. chicken and Oklahoma with milk
- Noah David Simon
Mark, you have uncovered the dark underbelly of humanity except in this case it isn't dark but is rather a pasty hue somewhere in the vicinity of undercooked flan.
- Akiva Moskovitz
This should be in the default noobie FF stream. Like the first thing anyone who signs up sees. If they stick around they're part of the family.
- Internet's Tad
Perhaps this can replace the kitty pic on the start page for non-members!
- Chris, Taskerrific Guy
I'm certain prop8 had nothing to do with Swine Flu
- Noah David Simon
I'm thinking that eventually, it will have been hidden by every user on FriendFeed. It'll be the most hidden post in FriendFeed history.

I wonder if the FriendFeed guys see this and say to themselves, 'Well, this isn't exactly what we had in mind when we started started FriendFeed.'

I look at it and think, "Not again."

Just about the time you FF is getting some class .. Oh well we is what we is.
- Brent - Loving Life
I can't believe after all this time some diligent FF'er hasn't dug up the identities (I said "titties") of this bunch and invited them to join the service that made them famous. Mitchell Tsai, get to work!
- Sprague D
i think if you unlike and delete all your comments anna it'll go away, but hide in general would be nice too (this photo makes me smile every time it pops up so don't mind it)...
- mike "glemak" dunn
*sigh* This is never going away, is it? It's gonna end up like James Bond movies and Swedish meatballs - always existing in the same form. never diminshing, never forgotten. :( :( :(
- Steven Perez
from IM
It will go away, to be replaced with photoshops of the original. It's all part of the meme lifecycle.
- Sparky
I am too new on friendfeed to know anything about record comments.. I love gmail tho, puts all the comments in one threaded email and I can delete them all later in one shot or not if I choose..
- David Gross
from email
well we should aim to beat the record.. i mean jeez there are tons of things that could be said about this.. like.. does it taste like chicken?
- ed fry
I'm gonna have nightmares now. thanks ed. ;)

ok, in Japanese: "an, an, soko dame!"
- Rick Cogley
You can't close this thread. A lot of people say that this place is a Scoble-fest but, truly, it is this thread that is at the very heart of FriendFeed.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I'm officially going to proclaim that this is the FF equivalent of Goatse or FFoatse if you will. Lets all refer to it as that from this point forward.
- Mark Krynsky
Sparky has left 57 comments. The rest of you are slacking. Hop to it!
- Christopher Harley
Chrisitan just walked by and said "It's too early in the morning for Japanese titty licking." It's NEVER too early for Japanese titty licking.
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
THIS is the first thing I see here this morning?
- l0ckergn0me
Chris, you just woke up? C'mon, man! It's 10:30!
- Akiva Moskovitz
I knew he would break eventually - it's fitting that it's on this thread *now to find out how to hide a thread once you've commented....*
- WorldofHiglet
As much as I am loathe to bump this post, I have to do it to say, You, sir, are a master. Well played, sir. Well played. This is why I take every opportunity to say, in my next life, I want to be Akiva. I've already called it! Don't anybody go getting any more ideas.
- ♥patricia♥
I, for one, refuse to "bump" posts...it's very unseemly...
- Live4Emma (L4S)
I wish FF-search allowed to do GROUP BY -aggregations so I could COUNT(*) who are the biggest *bump*ers. :)
- Jemm
Makes me laugh everytime I see it. Such a happy yet silly scene by the sea.
- Toby Graham
There is nothing silly about it. This is serious business.
- Sparky
The more I see this, the more I like it. Not for the ironic nipple-licking, but because these kids are genuinely enjoying themselves. :) Carry on.
- felicious
This photo looks so much better in iPhone 3.0!#!~
- Akiva Moskovitz
Seriously dude. What do I have to do to get rid of this disgusting picture!? Doh! Now I've just pushed it back to the top... yuck, I'm so sickened.

I love this image, because I have no clue why it's happening. Randomness FTW!!

Can't believe I never hit 'like' on this! Consider the situation rectumfied.
- Bec Rowe @d0tski
Oops! I hope I didn't just bump this up again... ;-)
- Sprague D
It's just so refreshing to see genuine juvenile humour at work. These kids are no different from any other, I think it's a great happy image, given all the other shite happening in this world on a daily basis. For those that are too pompous and prudish, 'up yours with brass knobs'
- ImJustCreative
Wow. 666. Nice! Actually, the reason Asashoryu is getting a divorce ( http://ff.im/4T0UA ), is because he wants to spend time with this lot.
- Rick Cogley
To this day, the pic still comes back. Just like Herpes. :D
- Danny Minick
Although unlike herpes this photo is fun to share with friends.

You know, every time this pops up, since FF hides the middle of the comments of which there are 804 or so, I see Akiva say "I'm sorry." at the top. It makes me wonder about how some things are just not possible to apologize for!

the thing that strikes me about this (aside from the obvious) is after seeing this thing pop up like 35-40 times since March its just occurred to me that I don't have any (guy) friends that a) would lick my nipples b) would lick my nipples for a photograph. Maybe I should get out more...
- J. Abdul-Qahhar
I'm a little scared that I've this has gotten more than 800 comments and almost 200 likes over nearly five months and I still haven't clicked "Hide."
- Scott of Two Countries
It's just a bit of fun. I mean watching how many comment, not the picture content (although I suspect that is all that was too!)
- Ian May
Allright, you guys ready to shoot "mirth and girth"?
- Rick Cogley
For the life of me, I'll never understand the emotion people have around this picture for or against. There's no nudity at all, not even implied nudity. Less dude nudity than a beer commercial or cigarette ad, yet there are people who really really really hate this picture.
- Matthew DeVries
I found a way to get a Tit Theme, and it involves this picture.

I just had to bump this once more... gives me a whole new excuse to go look at Phoebe again!
- Mark "DerBingle" J
Hmmm, where do you think they're from? My guess is Japan...
- sofarsoShawn
The bumping algorithm includes things like novel people posting to it, in addition to thread age, and rapidity of comments. If the same 3 people are talking in a thread, it quits bumping because it's obviously a closed tea party.
- Matthew DeVries
I forgot, also you're a very handsome guy(saw the wedding images), I don't understand why you don't like to share your face. Rochelle is a lucky lady.
- Jimminy
Jimminy, it's an irrational phobia. No different than people who are afraid of heights, spiders, clowns, or Canada.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Akiva, now I'm LMAO at the fear of Canada. People are actually afraid of Canada, or just the fact they don't know if they're British or French?
- Jimminy
I don't think even Canadians know that difference.
- Akiva Moskovitz

On Fark, there was this one thread, that just kept growing and growing. On Fark, it was a single page per thread. And you could post images and gif inline. Well the thread wouldn't die, people just kept posting. I forget which one it was. Anyway, it got so monsterous, that few people going to read/post to it per day (which was only a handfull) accounted for 1/3 of the server load of the site. They eventually had to cull that thread.
- Matthew DeVries
I think everyone who has participated in this thread has 'culled' themselves privately.

What with all the copycat images this has inspired I hope our muse continues to stick around and not get lost in the shuffle of so many knockoffs.

Matthew, you may have given some people more reason to keep bumping this thread.

How does it give you thumb exercise? Whatever you're doing, why don't you either use the keyboard or switch to Linux so you can middle-click the scrollbar to jump to where you want? :P
- Tanath
actually this thread does not bother me because I get it in email and gmail groups them and starts new thread after every 100 comments. I have it autoarchived so I do not have to see on phone lol and just see when I look at my ffeed label in gmail.

I think that Chinese at FF post was a marriage proposal thing. They were all trying to bump the guy's photo so that it would be the first thing his girlfriend would see when she logged onto FF.
- Kamilah Gill
"Very true, good point. The painful part of Jaiku, IMO, is that just when the team was starting to seriously get some momentum in that paradigm they were acquired and then distracted/deflected from the work that would have put it over the top. Same thing with FriendFeed team and Facebook."
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
"With the list of products that have been produced and died from Google you would think that they would have collapsed under their own weight by now. The only thing that I can think of that is preventing it is that, unlike Microsoft which keeps their R hidden away in a completely different division, Google's R is the entire company and they have no fear about launching and failing."

mmmmm Denny's pancakes. I remember a time when they were as big as your head and only cost a nickel! That was before forks were invented so we had to eat them with our hands. Damn hot they were too, not like today. Cold as ice now.......and small.

It's also interesting in the context of the fact DirecTV viewers no longer get the Versus sports network, as they couldn't negoiate a deal with Comcast
- Ken Sheppardson
ask Al Gore how he feels about their negotiations re: Current TV
- Karoli
Comcast is very aggressive in keeping out local competitors - they have bought every local cable company or forced them out. They have locked out all local sporting events
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
Yeah, here in San Francisco we couldn't get the Stanford/Cal game this fall... it was on Versus. And it means no daily, live Tour de France coverage next July :-(
- Ken Sheppardson
It was "rooter" before people started to mispronounce it.
- Gregg H.
I wonder what this means for their TV On Demand section - currently NBC is not listed for any shows and CBS is very big in that list. Will this change and now NBC will only be On Demand? Will Hulu now be a Comcast Cable only site?
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
The Network has changed to the point that combining cable + tv production can't corner the market in anything.
- Cliff Gerrish
consolidation of power and message control
- Karoli
cliff, if i have no access to nbc news because i'm not a comcast subscriber, the messages aren't especially helpful.
- Karoli
Don't you have access to NBC news via the network?
- Cliff Gerrish
cliff - they already "load balance" based on where/when you are streaming from/to - so now what's to prevent them from load balancing all ABC/CBS sites in favour of NBC?
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
Francine, the argument against the acquistion is that they'll control the Network. They won't.
- Cliff Gerrish
That's a good question - will Comcast/NBC still allow Netflix/Mediafly content to be streamed at full speed or will it become traffic shaped
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
you mean will the net be.. you know... neutral?
- Ken Sheppardson
Google will spank properties that throttle - that alone will keep them playing fair.
- Rob La Gesse
All proprietary un-free software and platforms will lose in the long run.
- Gregg H.
Cliff, they already do. If I am watching a streaming video for more than 5 minutes I get traffic shaped. If i'm watching Comcast On Demand I do not. Will Hulu now be traffic shaped or will it get a pass? That what will be the clue if they are acting in a network neutral manner
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
Windows is dog slow on good rigs, whereas Chrome OS is fast even on weak hardware.
- Vezquex: God of FF
Francine - it is basically throttling of your bandwidth based on content and/or destination
- Rob La Gesse
Francine - if i'm streaming a video on Comcast the first 5 or so minutes are at my full bandwidth capability (15mbs) but if I continue past that point the speed of the video drops to less than 1mbs
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
But Silverlight is from Microsoft. How can it be good?
- Vezquex: God of FF
Amazing Silverlight is actually seeing some traction. Developer Cuz predicted it would 2 years ago.
- JimmyJet
When Google switches Youtube videos to Ogg Theora natively palyabe in HTML 5 Browsers I think Gillmor and others that deride the importance of free software codecs and platforms will have a revelation
- Gregg H.
bah - I have to run an errand - I wish the video show could be viewed later
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
wish those questions had been asked in 2001
- Karoli
Bear - it can - they are always posted on building43.com a few days later.
- Rob La Gesse
Gillmor Gang is available on YouTube - your DVR of choice...
- Cliff Gerrish
google'll be using h264 and html5 video before any os codec
- Kevin Marks
Silverlight is as un-free as you can get.
- Gregg H.
Mike - use a hand grenade, Those suckers are tough!
- Rob La Gesse
seriously, take a pair of scissors and cut it. It works. surgically, even.
- Karoli
Is locked down linux an open system?
- Cliff Gerrish
The importance of the use of our computer devices in our lives are fundamental. That's why the software and hardware has to be free. Otherwise we don't control our lives. The software and hardware providers control our lives. That's the problem Steve.
- Gregg H.
But you need a real computer to debug anything. You couldn't actually debug from within Chrome OS.
- Vezquex: God of FF
Is ChromeOS going to give you access to the command line?
- Cliff Gerrish
Gregg - that's crazy. As crazy as "free" healthcare.
- Rob La Gesse
strange disconnect between these guys talking about high tech and Mike opening a plastic insane package with his teeth.
- Karoli
The importance of the use of cars, homes, electricity and food in our lives are fundamental. That's why cars, homes, electricity and food has to be free. Otherwise we don't control our lives. [oh, "free" free]
- Ken Sheppardson
Chromium is NOT free. I pay for it with my attention and my gestures - and Google profits off both.
- Rob La Gesse
"opening a plastic insane package with his teeth" Either a good way to take out aggression or raise blood pressure, take your choice.
- JimmyJet
the livestream from SuperNova has been great. Good panels and very good discussions.
- Jerry Schuman
If we understand that phones are going to the Network -- why don't we see that television is going there as well.
- Cliff Gerrish
Aside from a philosophical view. After being Windows free for 2 years and being free of malware, spyware, adware, and not having to run virus scan software and all that crap, I really don't understand why people like Gillmor think Linux is second class to Windows. I would never want the pain and horrible experience of using Windows again purely for practical reasons.
- Gregg H.
Gregg, I understand Windows 7 is quite nice. I'm planning to buy a cheap Windows 7 notebook as a backup machine.
- Karoli
You guys should talk a bit about Status.net, formerly Laconi.ca. Evan Proudomu just got over $1 Mil in VC. It could wind up being a very viable free federated decentralized competitor to Twitter.
- Gregg H.
comcast has been making a lot of great small changes to their dns server setup. and with their dns being only one or two hops away, I would be surprised if google's was faster.
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
I don't use comcast DNS servers anymore. I use OpenDNS. Much faster.
- Beau Liening
hehe - yea, I should say that I use both - OpenDNS on my main server and Comcast on the secondary ones (for the cases when something glitches on either)
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
I'm all about OpenDNS for speed + security. Plus, I try to be selective in what additional information I'm providing to Google about myself and my surfing habits. They have so much info about me already.
- amygeek
Amy, I'm with you completely. I'm already uncomfortable enough with the fact that they own my mail. And that I use their browser. Now they want to run my DNS, too? Honestly, though, until this thing cropped up this morning, I haven't really thought about DNS since I used to run my own DNS server. I might give OpenDNS a look, though.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Recommend OpenDNS, been using it for some time. Just upgraded to their Deluxe Package ($9.95 @ year) to support them.
- Victor Ryden
Wow. OpenDNS is quite impressive and provides a number of unexpected features.
- Akiva Moskovitz
What about immaculate conception? Mari, you could name a girl Emma, or a boy Jesus. So how long have you been pregnant?
- Jimminy
I can suggest some Turkish names if you like; Lale (pronounced with two syllables, La Le, means tulip, which is the national flower of Turkey) for girl and my name for a boy, LOL, but seriously I've always liked Ali for a boy!
- Halil
lol Jimminy....I've been meaning to tell you...you're a daddy.... that one time at breakfast.... would you like to name her Emma? haha KIDDING. I AM NOT PREGNANT. lol

the majority of the time when we were doing helicopter inserts the pilots never touched the ground at all. heck we were lucky if they slowed down or got within 10 feet of the ground :)

a badass pilot can overcome almost anything except extreme weather and catastrophic mechanical failure. those twin rotor helicopters are all getting quite elderly now. THAT'S that part that worries me most.

19th Century Oil on canvas grouping, possibly a physician treating a small child whilst family looks on. Possibly English.
- Pete Gilbert
It does look a lot like Hogarth. From my art history classes in school I remember that era the way people were facing meant something, along with what the adults were doing, who was in the room, etc.
- Jesse Stay
Now if I can just find the exact painting, its name, and its history
- Jesse Stay
I wonder if the physician is giving smallpox vaccinations, and the next child is waiting to the left there
- Pete Gilbert
Pete, awesome! You get the prize! Thanks - I have now officially been able to show the power of Social Media to my family :-)
- Jesse Stay
where in that article does it say what the painting name is or the artist? am I missing it?
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
bear, yeah, I would still love to learn the painting name and artist name, but I'm pretty sure Pete has the story right. I think I faintly remember one of my teachers even telling me about that.
- Jesse Stay
ahh - didn't think to search using the french spelling - I was hung up on it being a british artist (from the earlier hogarth thought)
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
k, now I can go to sleep - for some reason finding that painting became my only task for the last hour :) - thanks all

Got to see some gruesome images looking this up. Good job that they found the cure back then it was a nasty illness.

- Jesse Stay
Pete, yeah - looking up smallpox on Google image search is not for the faint of heart!
- Jesse Stay
Very, very interesting. Your analysis is spot on - who knows whether Square will be the winning company, but they are inventing a new game, and for users that's what matters.
- Paola Bonomo
I don't agree at all. This is nothing new and as soon as the pricing model for a vendor to sign up is revealed, i'm willing to bet they will be on par with other mobile CC processing companies. The only "new" thing is that they made the small plastic device that converts CC track data to an audio signal and created an iPhone app for it.
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
I don't see Square as being at all disruptive. It is, IMO, nothing but a shiny hipster packaging over top of what already exists - third party CC info clearing house. Nothing has been shown as to what the pricing model is for a vendor to use Square and i'm willing to bet that as soon as Square tries to make inroads into more than just Visa/Mastercard the price will go up and become comparable to Verisign or any of the other CC handling device companies.
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
sorry - that's just plain rude. to generalize cops in that way by making a joke of their deaths is just plain rude.
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
bear: Sorry, the shooting honestly never occurred to me. I saw the photo and thought, "Ha ha little kitteh weed in the coffee cup."
- Steven Perez
I'm not a fan of that site but this image in particular is really, really awful. We've had five police officers (all humans with families and friends who love them) senselessly executed (and one recovering still) in the past few weeks and some guy running around trying to bomb police buildings and cars and it's really quite terrifying. I can't really imagine commenting on anyone's death with 'they probably deserved it.'
- joey
oh sorry - I wasn't saying you were rude - just commenting on the trollz mentality - and I also didn't think of you when I wrote that.
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
TechCrunch VS. Fusion Garage case is now online at the AllRise court. Join the debate and cast your vote - http://bit.ly/AllRise277 (apparently)
- Roberto Bonini
has anybody suggested a wave, dedicated to this show, on Google wave? Of course not everybody has an account there but not everybody is on Friendfeed either. Just saying
- lelapin
They need to bump because the i7 iMac is so close to current Mac Pro
- Andrew Smith
Yes, lelapin... Leo's spent quite a bit of time in Wave, but the non-linear nature of it makes it pretty darn difficult to follow during a show, and as you point out it's not yet an open system.
- Ken Sheppardson
Is there a list out there of apps that take advantage of the cores?
- Andrew Smith
Any one hear that from now until Christmas Eve, Blacksmith Games' Appvent Calendar will be revealing a new game that can be downloaded for free each day http://appventcalendar.com/
- Michael Zamora
Adobe is starting to unload everything to the GPU so I wonder if CPU will be as relevant in the future. At least for apps I use.
- Andrew Smith
Which reminds me... I've got some weird glitch with one of my UPS that every few weeks it cycles at 6:30AM. I need to replace that box...
- Ken Sheppardson
When you come right down to it, very little of the appeal of MacBreak Weekly is the Apple content :-) Assuming that the audience is on iPods/Macs would be a pretty big mistake, IMHO
- Ken Sheppardson
Apparently they realized there's no point in sending your video... because it's not of you, if you're looking at the other person's video.
- Ken Sheppardson
Leo went from THREE great picks last week to this. lol jk :D
- sunkenplanet
Yeah, well the improv'ed picks tend to be hit or miss.
- Ken Sheppardson
So on average, the pick this week is $1300? :-)
- Ken Sheppardson
Well... do you need to use the toilet or not?
- Yolanda
This is a battle I choose not to fight. In my house I am outnumbered.
- ‘-.-’ Tutivillus Grift
Cover? Up. Seat? Down: Dave has to poo too which means the seat is needed in the down position more than 50% of the time, ergo it's makes logical sense for the seat to remain down.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Up. I don't like to touch the cover to use it. The seat, however? DOWN OR I WILL KILL YOU.
- nakachi
Down. I don't want to look into the toilet.
- Rochelle
Down, though my Mum leaves it up (!).
- Kol Tregaskes
Up when I'm using it, down when I'm not (esp. w/a cat who likes to baptize his toys...much easier to retrieve a toy mousie from a water dish than from a toilet).
- vicster
DOWN...I don't wanna see inside and it's bad Feng Shui!
- Anna Haro
To be clear, Twitter has made available a realtime replacement for the firehose (the replacement is called "birddog"). We have not yet started consuming that new API because we're waiting for the lawyers to come to agreement on the terms of use, which I hope will happen soon. I think Twitter's legal team is simply overbooked at the moment. Edit: To reiterate, Twitter is not blocking us. The reason we are not consuming the new API is because the fb lawyers want to review the updated terms first.
- Paul Buchheit
thanks for the update, Paul. Perhaps the open community can donate some lawyers to help Twitter out.
- Steve Gillmor
Paul - very interesting... saga continues :)
- Susan Beebe
lord knows we've got lots of lawyers...and I'm sure more than a few are unemployed right now. Perhaps one will step up.
- Karoli
Paul, do you know if any 3rd party has BirdDog implemented?
- Cliff Gerrish
wonder who will get BD up and running 1st...
- Susan Beebe
Cliff, "birddog" is just a category of statuses/filter, which is available publicly (see http://apiwiki.twitter.com/Streami...). I don't know if anyone is using the birddog role or not. It's available to us and ready to go, but fb lawyers want the tou resolved before we activate it.
- Paul Buchheit
Paul - "tou" typo for "TOS" (terms of service) right?
- Susan Beebe
Terms Of Use, Susan, but the two are about the same I think.
- Paul Buchheit
Maybe I'm mis-parsing things, but it sounds like Twitter's just offering the updates of FriendFeed users rather than the complete Twitter firehose. (see http://friendfeed.com/evhead...) If that's the case, I'm a little confused about what's holding things up. I can see how resolving rights to third party tweets might be problematic, but if FriendFeed's only being fed updates "owned" by FriendFeed users, what's the hold up?
- Ken Sheppardson
What Twitter offers anyone who needs a lot of user updates (but they don't want to give the firehose) is a streaming feed that you send to it a list of userid's (with a max # per stream.) Then Twitter will send back all updates on that stream for any userid in the list. Not exactly the firehose but it is actually very useful for most client use-cases.
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
Ken, that's right, it's just a different api. The holdup is due to the fact that the fb lawyers want to review the updated terms before we start using the new api.
- Paul Buchheit
So the 'internet' is now in the hands of lawyers, not engineers. We're doomed!
- zeroinfluencer
The positive thing I get from this (be it wishful thinking) is that fb is dedicating resources to having this resolved. If FriendFeed is just a floundering fish out of water, waiting to die, why would they engage lawyers... Very interesting...
- Johnny Worthington
from iPhone
hear hear Johnny. Zucker is a serious player.
- Thomas Power
Johnny: Why dedicate resources? So Facebook can have the full stream too? If not now, then down the road as bits of Friendfeed appear on FB or in the dev platform?
- Amyloo
Not to get all argumentative and start throwing around the D-word, Johnny, but Facebook would really need to address this independently of whether the FriendFeed servers stay on. As Amyloo mentioned, this is an issue if they ever intend to use the new Twitter API to feed Facebook proper.
- Ken Sheppardson
"5.ii.c - No Conflicting Uses. ... Except with the prior written consent of Twitter, you may not engage, directly or indirectly, in any business activity, if such business activity conflicts with, or places you in a conflicting position to that of Twitter or the Twitter Service, or is specifically intended to purposefully divert and/or drive audience traffic away from the Twitter Service..."
- Ken Sheppardson
....seems to me that would be problematic for Facebook as a legal entity to agree to.
- Ken Sheppardson
So you can get a feed of Twitter, but it better not be Better then twitter.
- CW™
Ken, if Facebook doesn't have short-term plans to use birddog in their big product, it doesn't make a lot of sense to sic lawyers on the tou right now. Those terms can change. For them to invest resources *right now* on the issue makes me think they care about their little product.
- Bruce Lewis
On the flip side, Bruce, one might argue that if they really cared about it they would have dealt with it by now. I don't recall when the old Twitter -> FriendFeed link started to lag, but it's been more than three months since FriendFeed became part of Facebook.
- Ken Sheppardson
Do we agree that Facebook cares more about FriendFeed than the "FF is dead" crowd thinks, but cares less about FriendFeed than we die-hard fans would like it to? If I had my way they would start migrating their userbase over here as fast as the servers could take it.
- Bruce Lewis
Almost, Bruce, but while I've been talked back off the d-word ledge, I think Facebook cares much more about FriendFeed *technology* than the site as a destination. I'll believe they care about it as a stand-alone UX when I hear somebody at Facebook who wasn't a FF employee mention it by name in public. I won't go so far as to ask that they suggest people sign up for the service... just acknowledge that it continues to exist.
- Ken Sheppardson
"Any issue of slowness is not necessarily because of the XMPP transport. Remember that you have two computationally intensive operations on either side of the XMPP transport and except for the initial document load, all that is being sent are diffs. Even the intial page load would only be a problem for very large waves and that can be solved within the XMPP framework by using the existing XEP for binary or OOB file transfers."
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
"Yes, no question at all that it's a lot of data being pumped over an HTTP-SSL pipe to the client but the way that Google implements that end is complete off of the XMPP transport. Right now, IMO, what your seeing is Googles Wave Document server trying to be both a Wave Document server and a front-end client service - not a good recipe for efficiency. With the testing i've done against the FedOne Wave server i'm seeing normal traffic patterns for XMPP with the wave protocol adding about 5-10% overhead depending on how many fancy wave embeds a wave document has but by far the majority of the traffic are character/blip diffs and XMPP only adds about 50-100 bytes extra (the stanza wrappers) and it's being shipped on an already open socket. That still doesn't imply that Wave as a protocol is going to be seriously hurting if someone edits/opens a Wave document with a lot of images or embeds or the other "fun" stuff people like to add :)"
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
"If the response or reply is within the Twitter ecosystem then isn't it a responsibility of Twitter to provide any mingling of the results into a stream? That's not to say it isn't a killer feature for a client to provide an activity stream relative to the actions of the user using that client, but I don't think the onus is entirely on Twitter (or Posturous or Tumblr or ...). Right now clients are having trouble providing activity streams IMO because of the nature of the silos they are drawing from - Facebook doesn't allow for storage of messages and I don't think Twitter does either. So any official stream by a client would have to quietly violate those rules and risk access to the stream of data they depend on."
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
I will agree, just so I get to be right. But Life of Brian will always hold a place in my heart, cause it was the first Python I experienced.
- Roger Benningfield
from BuddyFeed
You are wrong. The Life of Brian is better than Meaning of Life. Meanwhile, Holy Grail is better than Life of Brian.
- Louis Gray
Holy Grail by a rabbit's nose! A very very angry nasty rabbits nose! Now run away! Run away!
- Mark "DerBingle" J
p.s. The "horrible horrible way to die" scene, wherein Graham Chapman is chased off of a cliff by a hoard of oh-so-athletic-and-oh-so-topless ladies is some kind of awesome... I'll give you that!
- Mark "DerBingle" J
I hurl insults in bad french and launch cows at you! Holy Grail. Nii! Nii!
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
As I've written before, I have a loathing for Holy Grail because of people who quote it tirelessly. Same thing with The Princess Bride, a movie I used to adore. THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS
- Akiva Moskovitz
See, now you're just asking for a fight when you say a certain Monty Python movies is "the best". Life of Brian was the best, IMO.
- Jason Huebel
So, you sir, are wrong once again. :-P BTW, Meaning of Life has the lowest IMDb rating of all the Monty Python movies. So there. ;-)
- Jason Huebel
You've never experienced Monty Python and the Holy Grail until you've watched it in a hotel room in Amarillo, TX, with a 100MPH windstorm outside shredding the IHOP sign across the parking lot. Just sayin'
- Glen Mistletoe
akiva - I can completely feel your pain about quoting. I cannot enjoy any original Star Trek with my wife in the room as she quotes every line 2 seconds before it's said on screen! and what's worse is she does it without noticing it. GAH!
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
Jason, anyone who trusts IMDb ratings cannot be trusted.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Monty Python has achieved a state of comedic perfection, becoming a troupe of pure comedic light, meaning there is no "best" or "worst." But if there were a best (and there isn't), it would be Life of Brian.
- The Letter M
I was 13 when I took my parents to The Meaning of Life. I saw a piece on the musical sequences on Nimoy's 'Lights, Camera, Action' on Nickelodeon and it looked awesome. His show DID NOT play the audio of that particular sequence, which was 'Every Sperm is Sacred' and I pooh-poohed my parents when they questioned why the movie was rated 'R', and I've never been so uncomfortable as when my 13-year-old self was sitting with my parents watching this movie. My mom walked out.
- Kevin Fox
@Akiva, who said I could be trusted. I didn't. :-P
- Jason Huebel
Holy Grail is by far the best Monty Python movie...To even suggest otherwise smacks of shear lunacy, the heights have which only heretofore been plumbed in Arkham Asylum's darkest corners! The audacity to simply conceive of another reality is shocking and should be compared to utter heresy! Nay, sir...IT IS YOU WHO IS WRONG!
- Alex Scoble
As the right-thinking people here have already stated, Holy Grail is the best, and by quite some distance..
- Andy Connell
I have a theorem that Akiva is correct and Meaning of Life is the best. I have discovered a truly remarkable proof which this comment is too small to contain.
- Stephen Mack
Which movie got a musical? I think that about wins it for Holy grail.
- Dario Gomez
Watching the Almost the Truth documentary right now. Some of the members were kind of depressed by MoL because after all that time at the trade - they shouldn't have been doing a sketch film, they should have been able to come up with a true 90 minute narrative.
- Matthew DeVries
damn! i'm all over trying to come up with a comedy answer and Johnny beats me to it again! drat!
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
The statement reminds me of this:"It feels good to have strong opinions, because it sustains the illusion that one’s thoughts might actually matter in the grand scheme of things, rather than just being transient chemical reactions in the nervous tissue of a barely sentient creature in one obscure corner of an essentially chaotic cosmos." from http://secondlifeshrink.com/2009...

I can't believe Johnny doesn't consider Tony Danza to be vitally important to the course of history. Johnny, have you EVEN SEEN "Who's The Boss?"!!!
- Mark "DerBingle" J
Mark... Yes... Use to be one of my favorite shows... Which is why NOW I answer thusly :P
- Johnny Worthington
It's interesting that so many are guessing people who really _were_ important to the course of history, like Hitler, Stalin, and Tony Danza. The truth of course is that we are all important to the course of history, but the tv show was talking about the unibomber (and apparently felt that he wasn't important).
- Paul Buchheit
Aha... Paul, I did not see that one coming. Johnny, my apologies. I mistook your tone of adoration as one of sarcasm... I don't know what came over me.
- Mark "DerBingle" J
That's funny that they say he was not important, when he obviously is.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah

If it's a spice cake, all you need to do is fold space.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Yes! portal gun to the ceiling, portal gun to the floor, you get all speedy like then you portal gun to the wall and it shoots you past the spikes all uncut (like a European) like. Regadless, the cake is a lie - so it doesn't matter. it was fruit cake anyways
- Kyle Johnson
I also feel it necessary to say pew pew pew
- Kyle Johnson
Use Gordon freeman's gravity gun! piece of cake!

Get out of the room from the door you get in and blow the cake room door and eat it :D

Everyone on friendfeed has an iphone except for the ones who have android phones. Everyone else can be categorised under "other" :-)
- Slappy Line
I don't. I have some cheap-o mobile that doesn't even have a camera. That's going to change in a month when I leave the evil AT&T and switch to the evil Verizon.
- Junebug (aka Sarah Jill)
I don't have a iPhone. I have a Android as well.
- CW™
LOL...Andrizzle, I have the *exact* same phone. LET'S UNITE BEFORE WE ARE SHUNNED BY ALL THOSE ON FF.
- Anna Haro
Why do I feel like you're using a non-standard definition of "cute"? :p But I'll chime in and claim cuteness, since all the other iPhone users seem to be avoiding the thread. :)
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
I actually hate cell phones. i have one as an emergency but I don't want people knowing stuff about stuffs.
- Outsanity
I don't. I have an LG Versa. It's kind of crappy, but it does what I need it to do. Eventually (i.e. in two years, when I'm eligible) I plan on upgrading to a Blackberry, though.
- Penguin It's Cold Outside
Wait... you guys didn't get your free iPhone and MacBooks when you signed up for Friendfeed? Oh you poor things need to contact FF customer care immediately and claim your prizes!!
- Adrian
I have a cell phone that I never turn on. It makes and receives calls. It's for Emergencies only.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
I don't have an iphone. I don't have a cell phone. I do have a Jornada 548, though. You can think of that as an antique predecessor to the modern smart phone, without the phone capabilities...and no damn app store. I have a full sized keyboard that folds up really small for it, it has pretty good handwriting recognition software, plays mp3's, surfs the web, plays games, runs all kinds of software. My primary use for it is reading ebooks.
- April Russo (app103)
I have an HTC Magic (basically like a MyTouch 3G). I got it because I didn't want to go to the hassle to get an unlocked iPhone. And I totally love it even if my cheapness has (long story short) effectively made me a wifi hobo.
- Andrew C
hmm, should I be afraid and mention that I have an iPhone and a Blackberry? or should I just go sign up for over-connected-geek anonymous?
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
I don't because I refuse to leave Verizon and put up with AT&T B.S....so I use an iPod Touch and my LG Envy Touch phone.
- Bonnie Foster
iPhone SchmiPhone. I had a Symbian-powered Nokia, until I misplaced/lost it somewhere...
- Tyson Key
I don't have nor want. Right now I'd get HTC HD2 (WM 6.5 -phone)
- Jemm
Mine improves my life, so I'm cool with it. Don't want to have to mess around with OS stuff actually.
- Rick Cogley
I use an ancient DumbPhone. Meh, it works. Mostly.
- DGentry
I have an iPod nano. I think. Somewhere. Unless I left it in a bag with some fruit and then discovered the fruit had gone off and threw the bag out without noticing that the iPod was also there. But I'm hopeful that it'll turn up somewhere that doesn't involve fruit. I also have a cellphone but I mostly use it as an alarm clock.
- Deborah Fitchett
It's a cloud that you own, that exposes "local services" like storage, identity selector config, computation, etc. to services you don't own
- Kurtiss Hare
Does this silverlight porting path just translate video, or the whole framework? If it's just video, it sounds like a WMV->MP4 codec.
- Matt Mastracci
I don't think stream of audio or video via silverlight to a webkit browser counts as a dev platform for iphone
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
has anyone got documentation on sliverlight video playback on iPhone? I didn't see that demo
- Kevin Marks
Kurtiss - where do you own it? On Amazon? Who hosts that data? If someone else is hosting it do you really own it? The client is the best place for the user to own their data. That can be supported by a cloud service, but your client needs to control it.
- Jesse Stay
Jesse: that part's up to you, it can run from your house if you're into that. otherwise it can run from your amazon or rackspace account, whatever.
- Kurtiss Hare
Kurtiss, the average user is never going to be able to do that. It has to be something native in the browser or the operating system for the user to get it.
- Jesse Stay
@Kurtiss - your Rackspace account :) Please me more ;)
- Rob La Gesse
Also, a cloud-based service can't provide near the context a desktop client can

Internal enterprise apps are never a predictor of platforms that'll survive. I could list dozens of dead Microsoft products that were "hot" for a while until they were abandoned.
- Matt Mastracci
Jesse, for now, but when the broadband explosion comes....

Stephen, even then you're never going to have full control so long as you rely on the cloud for full context. See my article above.

Jesse, cloud based services can bring context using social web - bring context in form you contacts and activities
- Kevin Marks
Kevin, only to an extent. You still need the client to control that process.
- Jesse Stay
Kevin, I saw the demo but haven't the docs for it. Just passes the video off directly to the vid player on iPhone. Here is the demo URL http://www.iis.net/iphone
- Jerry Schuman
Robert: Do you think they did that for increased cross browser support?
- Paul Shadwell
many companies are just scared to move to the web It seems an insecure place to them and they take the IT guys (who get paid to manage Exchange) word for it. "You don't want to do that. It's insecure." Few CEOs outside our business will challenge talk like that.
- Matt Terenzio
I truly love that indictment. LOL...it's only Obama, Congress has not a damn thing to do with it.

Jerry: DOM Manipulations + Action Cards gets you there.

Jerry: Action Cards are all about contextual browsing.

meta data is data - it can be included with other meta data or consumed as is. what is key is removing the silo mentality -- open data api's to allow neutral use cases

Twitter's 'features' have been a massive user #fail
- Karoli
twitter has always been a feature to be included in other apps -- they *are* a pipe
- Karoli
yes, they have rolled out a number of new features but they still have fundamental stability issues when followers drop off your account, when api calls still return random errors and other quality of life issues
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
btw: all those things you just mentioned extended Twitters discrete extensions of the backend. You're seeing twitter manipulate and compartmentalize their schema
- Jerry Schuman
bear, not only that, but they're anti-community. by sending that message, they tell me they intend to be a pipe for my data, not a host.
- Karoli
i've become so accustomed to their slowness of innovation, i certainly don't take the recently developed features for granted like I did when G or FF innovates...sad, really.
- Kurtiss Hare
still looking for those 'features'. closing conversations, making retweets a metric, and adding lists...?

While I might agree with ppl discounted MS I think discounting Ray Ozzie is a HUGE mistake. Especially if Ballmer gets forced out of MS.

- Christopher A Carr
Yes. (Jeremy: when a person you follow comments or adds a like on an item posted by someone else, the item will show up for you to see by default. You can make set FF not to do so, by hiding the item, clicking "hide other items like this one" and choosing "Hide all "friend of" entries" -- that would be "Friend of a Friend turned off")
- alieb
Ah. I will keep mine turned on then. I've found some spectacular people to follow using this feature.
- Jeremy (cropmarks)
Friend of a Friend is certainly a turn-on
