"nikola tamindzic established his reputation when he started shooting nightlife reportage for nick denton's notorious GAWKER in 2004. the photo galleries fused gawker's irreverent editorial vision with tamindzic's photographic talents to present the faces of the time in a less mediated way. today, he lives and takes pictures in the lower east side, and his distinctive style has breathed much needed life into the somewhat jaded genre of nightlife photography" - Mustafa K. Etherpad Shows Google Docs How It’s Done
Wednesday at 4:22 pm - via Bookmarklet - Link
"It’s comparable to Google Docs or a wiki, but it’s far more useful. You start off by creating a new workspace. You type basic text on numbered lines at will. Then invite someone else in and have them type as well. Each user’s edits are highlighted a different color. Changes are made in absolute real time, something even Google hasn’t been able to do (Google docs update every fifteen seconds). Users can also chat in the sidebar, save versions and make a few tweaks to the settings like removing line numbers. One great feature optionally highlights Javascript syntax (making this a great way to write code collaboratively)" - Paul Buchheit via Bookmarklet
Etherpad may be a new tool in the Real Time Web kit. Collaboration on a non-flow basis. - Cliff Gerrish
Interesting - wasn't sure if AppJet was a worthwhile platform - this makes me much more interested - Christopher Galtenberg
Getting this for your try it link Paul: "EtherPad is under construction ... Sign up to be notified when we're back" - Philipp Lenssen
Try again, Philipp (nice icon btw). I think their fail whale is that signup box (not a bad idea, actually) - Christopher Galtenberg
Now it works thanks Christopher (it shows me as being alone in that document right now though). - Philipp Lenssen
Nice, a little slow, but I guess they shouldn't be waiting for all this traffic... Should be a nice tool once it adds other wiki-like functionalities (I'm thinking tiddlywiki). - Paulo Gomes
Love the tiddlywiki shoutout. (When will that tech come back to earth? So much potential) - Christopher Galtenberg
Oops, system failure again. We think we found the problem though. A nasty deadlock issue -- but hopefully fixable in short order. - Aaron Iba
Cheers Aaron. It's a huge hit here. And wow, hello AppJet! Nice tech, amigo. - Christopher Galtenberg
An interesting experience, to have typing and the other party reading be simultaneous... it removes the safety buffer of having to hit return, and has a different feel to it. Your sentence is seen by the other person as you're typing, correcting, shifting it... like when you're actually speaking in a conversation, where you may also correct yourself, look for words, etc. - Philipp Lenssen
superb substitute for paste in IRC on-the-fly collaborative coding situations: revisions acts as "version control," and multi-color highlighting representing users even works intra-line. - Adriano
How is the real-time shared editing realized? Similar to http://www.vimeo.com/1195398 or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... respectively? - Mustafa K. Isik
I do just want to point out that this functionality has been around for 25 years with UNIX's talk program. It is definitely not a new idea. - Robert Felty
Why stop there... Native Americans sent simultaneous smoke signals into the sky. And you thought they were innovators? Nope, just rank copycats. Birdsong. That's where it all began. - Christopher Galtenberg
Superb execution of an old idea is every bit as good as innovation; perhaps better. - kris. nuttycombe
SubEthaEdit. It existed years before Writely (Google Docs) and this web app is an almost exact copy of it. - Bill Strathearn
Bill, Wikipedia says "SubEthaEdit is a collaborative real-time editor designed for Mac OS X," so it's not a browser-based app? - Philipp Lenssen
That's right, SubEthaEdit is a native Mac app, so Mr. Strathearn is completely missing the point, as are most of the "this is nothing new, I used to do this with my 300 baud modem" crowd. - ⓞnor
Of course the platform is different, but the interface and functionality are obvious copies. http://bit.ly/P5Se. Given the large time-span between the two, I just expected a bit more innovation. - Bill Strathearn

Peter Schiff Was Right 2006 - 2007 (2nd Edition)
Play
November 14 at 3:06 am - Link
It's funny to watch the idiots on these news shows saying that everything is going up and everyone should buy financials, and then ridiculing the one dissenting voice. - Paul Buchheit
You need to be either crazy or have a strong backbone, character and conviction to swim against the tide - interesting to see how Schiff opposed "popular" belief in the financial industry in such a vocal manner. Fav quote "... stay away from the financials, they're toxic ..." - Mustafa K. Isik
It's more then that - you need a perfect sense of timing. In let's say 2003 or 2004, it would have been absolutely right in theory, but deadly in practice. As John Maynard Keynes put it -- "the fundamentals can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent." - Eugene
people are not smart, even the heroes with etched portraits in the wsj .. or as here, the tv talking heads ... we can only blame ourselves for not listening to our own minds .. after all, who makes them heroes? - Gregory Lent
It's amazing to see such luminaries as Arthur Laffer and Ben Stein being so wrong, yet it's not hard to see how Schiff was right: Without inflation, house values can only get so high before the avg. monthly payment exceeds the avg. monthly wage, and at that point people will have no choice but to default. From there, it's easy to predict that home equity will collapse, and so on. - Gabe
I wouldn't be taking any investment advice from Ben Stein. He doesn't even believe in evolution, why would he believe prices don't always go up? It'd be great to see these guys come back on tv and review what they said now. - Chris White
note Peter feels the recession will last "years." Oh boy. - Jason Kaneshiro
Surely recession will last "years" = depression? - Brian Sullivan
I kept saying the market going to tank since 200. I sold all my stocks at that time. My broker called me crazy. I should have shorted. I also think it will take years for the market to correct itself. There might be trading opportunities but I would not be investing unless Dow hits 6,000 And if we have banks defualting, 4,000 But I am not Peter, just a Troll. LMAO - Igor The Troll
Absolutely hilarious to hear the talking heads recommend Bear and Wamu. - Jason Kaneshiro
Brian, I think whether it is a depression is measured by how deep a recession is, rather than how long it lasts. Igor, you were around during the Roman Empire? :) - Chris White
In my other life! ;-) - Igor The Troll
As long as we don't consume so much crap, don't spend the money that we don't have via credit, and start saving real amounts of money, and start producing things of value, then the economy will start to come back. - jokrausdu
Whiplash... the quick interest rate hikes and uncontrolled gas prices are what jerked us into the ditch. The question is whether a new vehicle will be in order if we crash in early 2009. :) It could be one sad holiday season for retailers... and China. - Gus
jokrausdu is probably right, but it was saving too much that got us into this mess. Instead of spending all their money, the Chinese and Indians were saving it. Since interest rates were so low, they turned to mortgages as a safe, high-yield investment. Once all the safe mortgages ran out, they went to unsafe ones, causing all the trouble. - Gabe
america looks dumb from the asian perspective ... any disagreements? - Gregory Lent
It's a global economy Gregory. No one is immune. - Chris White
Laffer is putz - and the first clip is proof. - MikeAmundsen
I'd really like to see an interview with Laffer today where he's shown that clip and asked to justify his prickish behavior in the face of being 100% wrong. - Kevin Fox
guess i need to start keeping an eye on peter schiff! - MikeAmundsen
@Kevin Bloomberg Radio had a nice interview with Laffer recently. I think EconTalk has one as well. - Kevin D. White
Sanjeev: it sounds like either way it's China's fault. :) - Gabe
Seeing this guy's latest YouTube vids, he's now predicting food lines and martial law. I think part of his predictive accuracy has to do with a truly pessimistic perspective. Is there anyone in this new media climate who can provide counter-intuitive insight without a radical extremism? - Christopher Galtenberg
Christopher, how do you know it's wrong unless it doesn't happen? Things are much worse financially than most people think, and the financial media and government are continually optimistic. They've been saying for some time that things are at the bottom.... for a year. I don't know about martial law, but we may have food lines if unemployment goes over 10%. - Chris White
Ok, well, I'll just be quiet until everything happens. - Christopher Galtenberg
Actually I won't. Unlike that guy in the vid, I'll put my offer of a penny and my name, and I'll meet you back here in two years. No food lines, no martial law, no baskets of money needed to buy bread, even if unemployment hits 12%. Inflation is being mitigated by the crash in energy prices, and food productivity continues to increase. It would take a crash across most of the rest of the world, and American assets actually being considered safe (strong dollar), and $8 gallon/gas before food becomes that dear. As far as martial law... with Obama? No. And hyper-inflation? We're facing deflationary pressures now. Schiff was only right to a point, and we're reaching that point. - Christopher Galtenberg

Another neat feature! However, I'm getting "Unknown command. Type "help" to see list of commands." when I type [recent]. Does it only list recently IMd messages? If so, that error is a bit misleading... - Tony Ruscoe

I'm scared to try this feature because FriendFeed is already distracting enough (in a good way). Hey, that's me in the sample image! - Jess Lee
Yeah, that's what Friendfeed does actually,a lot of people like me are hanging aroud here all the days.It is too distracting, haha. - Steve Chou via IM
seems like the feature has hick-ups at the moment. at least I can post to the feed, but the commands '@me' (get feed) or 'help' do not seem to work for me yet. I also reported a bug about IM settings activation. btw, can you fix it so that commands would work also using caps (at least at the beginning of the word)? i.e. 'help' or 'Help' should work the same. now 'Help' returns "Unknown command. Type "help" to see a list of commands". I am using from mobile so it is better if I can be flexible with that. - Davide D'Incau
