"It makes you wonder how many incurable ailments of the modern world - depression, autism, hypertension, obesity - will turn out to have equally simple solutions, once we are able to see them in the correct light." - http://idlewords.com/2010...
Bear in mind that Amundsen, who beat Scott to the South Pole, had already figured it out, and he and his men didn't suffer from scurvy. http://www.amazon.com/gp...

I don't know, I'm starting to see a lot of these problems as symptoms of societal disease rather than just individual pathology. The solutions will probably be conceptually simple, but will involve a lot of sacrifice, and a lot of redefining of what our society considers desirable. It's the implementation of a simple solution that always proves challenging.

Our most common treatment for cancer involves injecting toxins into the body and expecting the cancer cells to die first. I suspect we'll look back on that as sheer lunacy as well.

I wonder how many of those ailments are simply due to having a diagnosis. Time was, you weren't autistic, you were shy or retarded. You weren't obese, you were fat or lazy.

I wouldn't be surprised at all to learn that a majority of afflictions today to be environmental in nature. We humans have a terrific zeal for implementing all kinds of technology without full (or fair) examination of the impact it might have directly (or otherwise); interaction with factors seemingly beyond the scope of study have often been concluded as causal.

http://ff.im/oOdNy Hello Paul, is said by many that our beloved FriendFeed could close. These days many people are alarmed and are intended as Cliqset different social networks. For my part I hope that FF will continue its excellent service, that even better with new initiatives since it is more than a year that no longer run no news. Can you tell us something? Friendfeed will remain open? Sorry if I write here, but it is the fastest way to contact you. PICCHU

Anyone know a way of getting 'Best of Day' type of results from a filter in the beta? I really miss having the BOD on my lists I've made. Will they be bringing it back to lists?
I would be interested to know if you could do the exact filtering that they use for the BOD. If not... PLEASE bring it back to lists!

Thanks Enrique, I'll post some more soon. They are a little more obvious than these ones. As Luke points out; without being able to look closely it's impossible to tell. He's right; but up close it's more obvious. I'll upload the originals to Picasa later, and then you'll be able to zoom in with any photo viewer and see for yourselves. I can't believe how many people liked these. A few people have reposted them already. Thanks!

Chris, I would love to say they're mine, but it's not true. I've had them for a while, but I'll find the artists names. It will just require a little backtracking. Besides, they deserve the credit; all I did was find them:-)

Excellent pictures - how long did it take you to scan the photographs into Photoshop and then edit them? The only pencil that has come into contact with these "drawings" is the Photoshop pencil. A tip - stop trying to fool people into thinking you are a "real" artist, because all you are doing is cheapening proper artist's works whom have spent hours creating real pictures as opposed to a few minutes on a graphics editing package.

I'm amazed that people are still posting these photographs of animals and calling them pencil drawings. This is at least the third case I can remember (and there are probably more) of this happening. The myth about them being drawings was debunked long ago. It's also funny that whenever they get posted the person posting them doesn't make it clear that they aren't the artist, exactly as you have done.
- canadianmaple09
@canadianmaple09 I posted these back in March, 2009 when I was beginning to use FF regularly. I ran them through TinEye hoping to find their source, but it returned no results. When I ran through again yesterday, TinEye returned over four pages of results. If I had it to do over again, would I? Yes
- Michael Fidler
The people you refer do don't join "just to slam" someone, they are concerned members of the online art community that want to see real art appreciated and fake art or photos being passed off as drawings revealed for what they really are. Artists such as Brian Duey, Armin Mersmann, Paul Lung, Zindy Nielsen, and many others do not receive the appreciation they deserve because of scams like this.
- canadianmaple09
canadianmaple09, the worthiness of your motives notwithstanding (and they are worthy, definitely) you could definitely have approached Michael completely differently by say, giving him the benefit of the doubt rather than attacking in a highly accusatory tone.
- Chieze Okoye
When you've seen these same pictures posted multiple times by people that just find them on the internet and claim they are pencil drawings, when it has already been established on multiple occasions that they are not, the "benefit of the doubt" approach seems a little too generous. People post these images and claim they're drawings to get views for their own site or blog or page or whatever it is they post it on. It's wrong and it needs to be stopped.
- canadianmaple09
I can understand that, but you should also keep in mind that everyone is not as well-versed in the issue as you are. All I'm saying is that you would probably be more effective in this case if you weren't setting this up as a us-vs.-them, "must destroy with the validity my argument!" attitude when talking to a guy who's been actively having a discussion on the issue in what seems to me (having been around when he first posted the images and the follow up thread and what not) to be good faith.
- Chieze Okoye
Look at his first comment here. People clearly thought he drew them. He doesn't set the record straight. He also claims that they "are actually pencil drawings" and that "I have more drawings too." Later he claims that you need to look at them closer to see they are drawings and that he will "post the originals". Once again, this makes it sound like they are his. This follows the same...

The Associated Press: Cops: Siblings brawl over butter in mac and cheese (I dunno what's funnier, that this happened or the AP reporter's blatant amusement) - http://www.google.com/hostedn...
"WATERVILLE, Wash. — An argument over butter in a macaroni and cheese recipe churned into violence between a brother and sister. A 21-year-old man called police June 6 to say his 17-year-old sister tried to cut his neck with the serrated edge of a spatula. The police report said the sister was making macaroni and cheese when her brother asked if she was using butter. That led to an argument over the difference between butter and margarine. And, then butter battle escalated."

- Scoble, Alex Scoble
Colleen, my point isn't that we should want to give up our arms, my point is that we don't really need them anyhow...and if it gets to the point where you do need them, they won't do you any good. 9mm vs armored Humvees = suicide. You'd be much better off learning how to make explosives AND that will most certainly get you in trouble.
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
Also, you have to keep this in context of whether or not the people with the guns are willing to shoot en masse on unarmed civilians.
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
@Victor - absolutely. I'm not saying immediate and deadly force is necessary. I'm just saying I'm not going to accept that overthrowing a government is guaranteed to succeed without some force. @Alex - nobody with a 9mm goes up against a HMMV except in the movies - guerilla warfare is where it's at if it comes down to it. And my armory is for personal protection and sport shooting, not taking out the government. :P
- ωαřмaiden ❤Marrit Woman❤
Exactly, because a legal armory doesn't much help for taking out a government such as ours...and guaranteed to succeed? I didn't say it was guaranteed to succeed, just that it is possible.
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
You assume that the people driving the tanks and firing the guns aren't going to just get up and leave. I doubt that most of them would fire on an unarmed crowd just because they were ordered to.
- Dave Roth
Perhaps a good counterpoint is that with an armed populace, you don't need to piss off nearly as many people to get overthrown?
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
On the other hand, I kind of wonder just how much social change has been halted or at least slowed down by armed citizens opposing such social change. The government doesn't actually have to do any of the oppressing when they can get the people to do it for them.
- Victor Ganata
Also (I don't know if you were getting at this earlier Alex, but I guess you were), while someone in the military might find the idea of shooting into an group of unarmed citizenry unsavory, a lot of that distaste goes away in a group of armed citizenry. And let's face it, most groups of armed citizenry would be very ill-matched against the US military.

- Victor Ganata
Yeah, I don't think exercising the 2nd amendment can, at this point, actually prevent a military despotism in this country if that's what's in the cards for us, but it can allow you to successfully intimidate your fellow citizen whom you disagree with and who isn't as heavily armed.
- Victor Ganata
Insofar as every state has their own militia because of the 2nd amendment, I think that a military despotism could be withstood in this country, Victor.

"it can allow you to successfully intimidate your fellow citizen whom you disagree with and who isn't as heavily armed." I can understand being outside for a little bit, but locked in a car where the tempurature is 112 with the windows rolled up because you don't want your stereo or baby stolen, is a a bit ridiculus, if you're going to take your child with you, by golly take your child WITH YOU, if you can't then call a babysitter or find a daycare. $50 or a chance of death/jail time, I'll spend the $50 tyvm.
- Tsali - A dude man
from IM
I'm not sure they're necessarily comparable. The parents who take their baby outside for naps probably don't leave them out there unattended, and the posts you linked spend some time talking about how you need to make sure the baby is reasonably protected from the elements. Whereas if you leave your baby (or your pet) in a car unattended on a hot, summer day, it can easily get to 130 degrees in there even after half an hour, even with the windows cracked.
- Victor Ganata
I like the Finnish idea better then the car idea. It sounds a lot like something my grandma would have done if she didn't. (My mom's side is all Finn.)
- Heather
Victor, regarding being comparable, I wasn't thinking of the temperature risk; more a kid being left alone. If by not unattended at home you mean the baby outside and the parent inside, then yes. It's also common to park the baby in the stroller outside of a store while the parent goes in to shop.

Yes. We're trying to decrease the amount heavily processed foods that we intake and HFCS is much more processed than sugar. Also there have been many studies that have shown a link between certain health problems like obesity to HFCS beyond what sugar can cause.

Yes. I've been trying to cut back on it, mostly because of the possible link to obesity and diabetes.

Sort of. I read labels. If it's a food that doesn't need a sweetener and I see that as a major ingredient, I don't get it. I wouldn't get it if it listed sugar as a major ingredient, either. If it's replacing another sweetening agent, I don't worry ~as~ much about it.

I try to eat a lot of unprocessed and more natural foods both just for general food philosophy (I like to feel connected to my food as part of my enjoyment of it, I like to support sustainable agriculture and I just don't enjoy a lot of artificial tastes...I also don't really like much salt) and for my headaches. When I'm on a consistently...

Yes. I've also found that avoiding HFCS has helped my IBS and my weight - I havent decreased the sweets I eat, but apparently them being of real sugar and not processed with as many chemicals really does have an impact. I also feel healthier, and I notice the difference within 2 or 3 days when I fall off the wagon.

No, because it's not used much over here. Manufacturers here typically use can sugar.

I'm mildly allergic to corn, it usually doesn't bother me much... Corn syrup in moderate quantities makes me really sick... Can't finish a can of regular coke (except kosher for Passover coke or pepsi classic)

I don't encounter it much (I mostly buy ingredients and cook, blah blah blah) but I have started avoiding it for political reasons having to do with my objections to American agribusiness.

Yes, actually I'm trying to avoid everything tied to the corn industry due to it's heavy lobbying to use it in everything.

I am, but I'm not reading all of the labels and whatnot. However, if there's a version of a favorite thing without it, then I'm buying that instead. I got more concerned about this when legitimate studies started popping up linking HFCs with obesity (more than sugar).

Yes. Been listening to In Defense of Food and am becoming increasingly appalled at "food" these days. Our bodies aren't designed to deal with that type of sugar. If you haven't read it or listened to it, I recommend it. http://michaelpollan.com/books...

Yes, but mainly because I don't buy many/any processed foods anymore. I specifically buy bread and condiments without it.
- FFing Enigma
I'm impressed by the number people who are concious about the harmful effects of HFCS. very nasty stuff for us.

We eat very few processed foods and I always avoid anything with HFCS.
- Bonnie Foster
I'd rather see real sugar in stuff (more specifically, I'd like the US to stop propping up the a-holes who are destroying the everglades and driving the use of HFCS), but I don't really read labels to avoid it.

I would like to eat less processed foods, including avoiding HFCS for most posted reasons (idk about allergy). But with not having money and someone else doing the shopping I feel like I can't be picky. Something about begging and choosing.
- Heather
Theoretically, Heather, it should be possible to avoid foods with HFCS in them without paying a premium.
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
I say theoretically, because it really comes down to what stores you have access to in your area. If there's a Trader Joe's near you, most of their condiments and what not are pretty inexpensive and have no HFCS and some brands are now purposefully switching back to sugar and marketing themselves as having no HFCS. For instance, Hunt's (I believe it is) Ketchup.

HFCS triggers migraines for me, so I avoid it like the plague.

Yes, esp with my son's diet (but ours too); mostly b/c of how quickly it enters the bloodstream and affects blood sugar and is related to obesity. Does he get HFCS in his diet, yes, but I try to limit it as much as I can.
- Kelly W.
If it has HFCS it does not make it's way into our grocery cart PERIOD! I cut sodas completely out of my diet 7 years ago and have been progressively been moving towards everything organic since. It's easier IMHO when done in steps. Plus you don't get the price shock as bad.

Nope. The only thing I care about is that my food not have anything officially classified by the FDA as poisonous and that it fulfills RDA requirements

Also, that list was at the top of my frequently-used important links on my work computer :P

The "One Word Story" game doesn't work on Facebook. I tried it and the sentence was beyond incoherent. Near the end, people just started putting words in. I like Friendfeed better.
