"One question is where to draw the line. You could think about obviousness. If a business process is truly new and innovative, then it might deserve a patent. If it's not particularly creative, but you're just the first one to think to patent it, then that's probably not going to fly."

Seems like the wrong direction. We should be moving towards having less patents, which are more often than not used to stifle innovation and competition, rather than foster it.

Sort of. I work full-time, but I also do part-time work for my own freelance company. My company is far from paying the bills, though.

I have my own public limited company for contracting if that counts. :-)

I am trying, slowly but not very successfully. High school kids make more in an hour at McDonalds than I make in a week. But at least I am making enough to cover the expenses of running it, with a tiny bit left over. All things considering, since 2005, I did make back a lot more in profit than my $20 initial investment.

"You know cutting calories is a great way to go in the battle of the bulge. But that only looking at the number of calories is in an overly simplified way to look at food. After all, 100 calories of apple equals 100 calories of chocolate, but obviously there are benefits to one over the other. To really help you lose weight, pick the foods with superpowers! If you think about it, you’re realize you already know about how some foods have unique “abilities”. Carrots help your eyesight, fish is good for your brain, milk strengthens your bones, etc. But what about foods with the superpower to destroy fat?!"

You mean like crossover events that span a multitude of different titles? I think they're pretty much big marketing gimmicks & I don't like them. I'm loving Blackest Night, but I'm still not buying every Blackest Night tie-in.
- josh neff, Fun Dip of FF
I'd like them better if they were done in a very short period of time and self contained, but most of the events themselves are fine. What I don' t like are the ancillary books that are often uneven. For instance, in Secret Invasion, the Captain Britain title was great, but I don't think anything else was very good. The Young Avengers in particular seemed blah. I am looking forward to Siege, more than I care to admit.
- RAPatton
So are you both saying that the problem is not with the main miniseries, but rather the "everything else"? Or do you evaluate this stuff on a case by case basis? Has an event ever caused you to drop a title?
- Derek Coward
I dropped the non Ultimate Spider-man titles because of Brand New Day, and I read a lot less of 616 Marvel after Civil War because I disagreed with the characterizations of Tony Stark and Steve Rogers in particular. I don't think a DC event has irritated me, but they have the same issues with periphery series.
- RAPatton
There are some crossever events where I've liked the overall story (like Blackest Night, for example), but I don't need or want huge storylines that tie lots of different titles together & push me to buy more than I already do. I'd be happy with a couple of titles that tie a bigger setting together (like a couple of team-up books) & having the occasional crossover between a couple of...
- josh neff, Fun Dip of FF
I think in Marvel's case, the company events are now flowing through their Avengers titles which is where they should be. DC's are more hodge podge, because the Justice League titles aren't gelling. I do think the Superman titles have a good synergy (everyone cringed from that word choice?) right now, and are almost their own expanded universe at this point
- RAPatton
Which do you prefer, the ones that are based around a single miniseries and branch out from there (like World War Hulk), ones that have no corresponding miniseries but rather capture a "moment in time" (like Dark Reign) or ones that are miniseries that lead to other miniseries (like how the Countdown to Infinite Crisis minis lead to Infinite Crisis)?
- Derek Coward
If it's organic, comes about naturally, I don't have a problem. I like that the publishers are putting out minis (SI: Spider-Man, BN: Batman) instead of disrupting the flow of the ongoing. If this is supposed to 'change the fabric of their universe' (COIE), then I can see why it would be company-wide. If it only 'changes the lives of these characters FOREVER' (Siege), then keeping it...
- David Price
I like single miniseries that branch organically. I don't think of Dark Reign as an event, so much as a period in time. I didn't like Countdown because it was boring, but i liked 52 a lot, but their World War tie ins were bad. I thought it was a good idea, just poorly implemented and superfluous.
- RAPatton
I don't read them, I don't like them. Best case is that I can avoid them on move on. Not reading Blackest Night, didn't read Secret Invasion, actively dislike Dark Reign. I'm hoping that it finishes soon enough and leaves things alone. I think these company wide crossovers are in part why sales slide - they increase the cost and time it takes to care about the company. In my case, it teaches me that I don't care that much.
- Dave Slusher
Darkest Night is ok. I am reading it, and the superman tie in (good), batman tie in (wasn't that good), but somehow I haven't read all the green lantern tie-ins and I don't know that I harms it that much. I'd just rather Darkest Night some out all at once. like 8 in 2-3 month period. I've been liking the twice a month nature of X-Men Forever
- RAPatton
At the same time, I like cross pollination that is natural and whenever you read a B level team like Teen Titans and they have to save all of existence you always have to ask yourself why they don't call in the Justice League
- RAPatton

i have watched the first six episodes of mad men season one. I have one question: when does this show starting getting good instead of boring? just wondering.
I was afraid of that. if I wasn't watching it to have something to talk about on the next podcast, I would have bailed on it by now.
- Derek Coward
from fftogo
I'm only caught up on S1 (have only seen one ep of S2, I think). Sometimes I found myself wondering whether I was just being dazzled by the amazing costume & set design, or being nostalgic for an era my earliest memories stem from. While I think that's going on, I think I genuinely find the writing interesting although slow-paced. It's about characters more than it's about plot-driven stuff. That's not for everyone.
- Spidra Webster
yeah, I pretty much thought the same thing. I watched during the original run and gave up after about 4 or 5. I didn't really notice a buzz about it until season 2 started, and wondered if I had missed something.
- Avatar Press
I probably wouldn't be so down on the show if I cared for or at least liked any of the characters. I like the job the actors are doing more than I like the parts they are playing.
- Derek Coward
from fftogo
There are few characters without some major flaws. I find that's the case in "Glee", too, yet I really like that show. I prefer to have a character/s that I can root for but I guess that having a world full of hard-to-like people is not necessarily a dealbreaker for me.

Granted, this job IS in Detroit, where $40k probably will buy you a mansion and servants.

from fftogo
That seems insultingly low, regardless of region. Most non-entry level dev jobs start at 50k.
- Sparky, a big deal
In that region, which has been practically destroyed economically, 40K might not be so bad

That's ok, I got a LinkedIn .Net hit for 40-45K the other day...ummm... did they even look at my profile (and seen how many years I've been doing this??)? No, recruiter, I don't know any other devs who would be willing to work for that either.
- Her Lindsay-ness
kids straight out of school would, no?
- Chris Heath
i'd take 30-40! how hard is it to learn ruby on rails?
- edythe
@Chris, yes, that would probably be a good starting salary out of school (for a year or so just to get experience), but Tad and I are both a little bit beyond that stage! @edythe - Ruby on Rails has its quirks but it's not any harder to learn than any other programming languages/frameworks. If you have any experience programming you can probably pick it up if you want to.
- Her Lindsay-ness
I live in Detroit, trust me you canNOT buy a mansion and servants for that amount of money. However, it is a seller's market in this area when it comes to jobs. They know that no one in their right mind would move here for a job. If you are already here and are considering that job, then you're trapped and they will give you anything they feel like. Yes, I want to move.
- Derek Coward
actually, after sleeping on it... 30k is way too low for a programming job... 35 maybe but 40 should be about the starting wage for programmers
- Chris Heath
Yeah, 30K is about twice current minimum wage... 40K isn't even 3 time minimum wage. I made about that much when I started my career while still in college about 14 years ago.
- Her Lindsay-ness
I think my first programming job, back in 2001-2002 (where I met @Tad), I was making 35K...wasn't bad for someone self-taught with no college experience.

Yeah, again, I think it's fine for someone to start out and get a year's experience or so... Once you've got that under your belt then it's time for a major raise! And it's just kind of insulting to offer that to someone who's been doing dev for more than a decade... The economy is still hurting but it's not THAT sour (at least for IT)...

And again, to rub salt in the wound, it's in DETROIT. BLEH.

"No, really, it’s true. Look at Marvel’s moves after he left the book. The very first thing they did was launch X-Men: Reload, a branding and soft-relaunch initiative that saw Chris Claremont put on Uncanny X-Men, Chuck Austen placed on the last two issues of New X-Men (where he cleaned up plots that were already perfectly clean), and Joss Whedon hired to write what turned out to be one long love letter to the glory days of Claremont/Byrne Uncanny X-Men."

Is it just me or does the author spend the entire time contradicting his headline?
- Eoghann Irving
I think he was trying to be a little too sensational. he should have called it 'Grant Morrison ruined the x-men by being too awesome' but that wouldn't have gotten as many people to check out what he was saying.

I saw the Joe Theisman injury on Live TV when I was 6. This was worse, by far.
- Matthew DeVries
We saw it live on the flatscreen and replays too! It doesn't look like we'll see him play again in a Cal uniform, barring a miracle. Waiting for updates.

Now you can use the line "Think you used enough dynamite there, Butch?" without looking crazy. It will come in handy. My daughters still don't know what I'm talking about. :)

That part is great, and they did enjoy it

My eldest identified that the sherrif's speech to Butch was really about the cowboy age being over; good job, MAP.

Me: That thing on the dog's leg is getting bigger. Her: No it's getting smaller. Me: What are you talking about? It's bigger. Her: No, it's getting smaller. Me (who really stopped caring a few seconds ago): 'And Leon's getting larger'. Her (never having seen Airplane or thinking I'm some sort of idiot, either way with an odd look on her face): Huh?
You can read V For Vendetta in no time. It isn't that large. I don't think it took much longer than watching it unless you are going to really think about Moore's construction and choices.

I still haven't seen this movie. I suppose I should just reach over and put the DVD in a player one day.

I would love to read the book then... @Derek Coward it is an awesome movie, you definitely should watch it.

my cat keeps running in my room at top speed, jumps over me, then turns around and jumps over me the other way. He's done it about six times now. It's hard to go back to sleep when you have a psycho kitty in the house.
At least it is the smallest cat doing this foolishness. My first two cats were 19 and 18 pounds and almost every night they would chase each other all over the house. My bed was the turnaround spot. Explanations were a bit awkward if I wasn't alone.

There are few things as entertaining (well maybe not if you're trying to sleep) as a cat in the full throes of Cat Crazies.

"A video montage showing how Fox’s coverage of the special election in New York’s 23rd Congressional District empowered Republican teabaggers to push aside moderate Republican Dede Scozzafava in favor of a hard-line conservative candidate Doug Hoffman, allowing the first Democratic victory in the district since the Civil War"

Is anybody else watching Girl Number 9? I was in the middle of episode 3 before I realized the main dude was the guy who played Ianto on Torchwood. http://www.canyousaveher.com/home...
