This is prompted by a recent discussion on a LinkedIn group I am part of. As a Online Community Manager do you work remotely or on-site? How is this working out for you?
I work on-site generally...partially because I wear many hats, but mainly because I think input from the community (through the Community Manager) needs to be an important part of the decision-making process. However, I do think it's valuable to work from home when you really need to focus and answer some community questions...the office can be distracting. Great discussion! PS: If it's a public group, do you mind linking to the LinkedIn group? Thanks! - Evan Hamilton
By all means, the LinkedIn group is here: http://www.linkedin.com/groupAn... - Sue

What search tools is everyone using on their community sites? Open Source Search is weak at best. Autonomy, Fast and Omniture are to expensive for most communities...any ideas?
Have you tried Sphinx? It's a search engine framework type of thing. - Sue
I'll go check it out...thanks. - jim weldon from email

I'm wondering how you picture a perfect community site. That includes both functionality (ratings, tagging mechanisms, profile options, email-functions, etc) and technology (cms, plugins, api's, etc.). What are your experiences with certain content management systems, what was a key trigger in user participation
Ease of use. Keep it simple. Bells and whistles are fine but they detract from the purpose of the community. Look at it from a newbie's point of view and make it very obvious how to post, reply to other posts, contact other members, etc. - Sue
@Sue, I think ease of use is critical ofcourse and bells and whistles will make it almost always harder to use. Still, lot's of those extra things make it for members more valuable to participate. I mean, is email-subscription to every single kind of thing an extra of 'an essential'? - Melle Gloerich
@Melle, I would say that option should be offered so members can decide. What I mean by bells and whistles are more games, gadgets and gizmos type things that some seem to load communities up with. The types of things that take the emphasis away from "community." Essentials would be tools that make it easier for the members to communicate with each other, so email, private message systems, ability to create their own groups, etc etc would be very important to include. - Sue

This seems to be a common question: How to get more people to join your online community: http://www.feverbee.com/2009...
mike fabio
Does the Internet amplify negative thoughts, or just give haters a soapbox? Why do some people find it necessary to spend most of their time online complaining, berating, and slandering? Is it a natural function of the Internet, a product of the perceived protection of anonymity, or is it something much more vile?
I think it's all of the above. - Anika
Just to provide some context: I've spent the last half hour reading hate-blogs for one of the bands that I manage, and can't seem to figure out how somebody could really devote so much time and effort into filling the internet with mindless drivel. If I don't like something, I might make an off-handed comment or be sarcastic, but I'd never *write a whole damn blog about it* - mike fabio
Some people get obsessed or tuned into their hate. Even for me, a blog post seems overkill when I do it. But I state my piece and let it go. What's awful is when people write untrue and hateful things, then go into other sites linking their own pieces to buffer their point. - Anika
Or even weirder are those people who seemingly stalk you just to make a rude a comment directed at you. It's like you feel sad for them because they clearly have nothing interesting going on in their lives. But yes, what makes them so hateful that no matter what you say they have to be there with a smartass comment? - Anika
You bring up a very interesting point with the cross linking. I see this constantly. It's little more than an outward cry for attention, if you ask me. - mike fabio
They see the internet as a way to amplify their hate and for some of them, it works. It becomes a little business. There is a political blogger whose entire site is all about dumping on liberal blogs. For whatever nutjob reason, she announced that I was one of the 'cool kids'. So imagine my surprise when I was searching for a comment I had made and stumbled upon this site, where for... more... - Anika
I sort of wonder if the haters just have nothing better to do with their time. I think that when I was a teenager (and that's really the target audience of many of the bands I deal with) I probably spent some time hating on shit on the web for no good reason, but eventually I just got bored with the hate. Kids, when they don't have much positive going on in their lives, turn to the... more... - mike fabio
I think of it as a sort of "Keyboard Rage". Simiilar to "Car Rage". They seem to get behind the keyboard (or wheel) and feel like they are in some protective bubble and get carried away. There is no off-switch. I see this a lot in the community I manage. Many people read a thread they don't agree with and instead of taking time to consider a response they just let their emotions get the... more... - Sue

hmm. I would question that as a blanket assertion. Was listening to a seminar about e-mail marketing where the presenters were saying email should *only* be used to drive engagement/communication. That traditional email enewsletters are pointless. Umm, sorry, no. People still read newspapers, articles, magazines, books, strictly for the purpose of gathering information, whether it's... more... - Laura Norvig
