"We're excited to announce the availability of ReadWriteWeb's Guide to Online Community Management, our first premium report. It's been in the works for more than four months and we believe it's unlike anything else you've seen. Businesses seeking to engage with online communities on their own websites or all around the social web will find the guide invaluable in getting up to speed on the state of the art and making sure their employees have the foundation they need to be effective."

Seems like a waste of money to me - It sounds way too basic to be any sort of "guide", and the price tag is ridiculous

I'm looking for a few community managers to read and review my new book, "18 Rules of Community Engagement." If you're interested, let me know. Angela@AngelaConnor.com http://www.amazon.com/Rules-C...
Ask FriendFeed: how do you feel about social bars (like Diggbar, ow.ly, Facebook, etc.)? Do they work? Do they annoy users? (via http://friendfeed.com/revrev...)
Growth of a healthy online community | FreshNetworks Blog Ways to analyze health and tips to keep your community healthy. - http://blog.freshnetworks.com/2009...
From what I gather, a lot of us are measured by return-visitors to your websites/forums, the amount of traffic to those sites, etc. I wanted to start a topic where we could share some of the more successful campaigns, contests, and events that we held that proved to move the Return-Visitors/Traffic needle.
I have a ton of links, some of which delve deeply into the subject. I Stumble the really good ones if you're interested. Just go to my Stumble account and friend me. (infolode ) One of my friends, Peg Corwin of SCORE Chicago is a really great resource for what you're looking for as well. Just hit my friends list on Stumble and look for citylady (can't remember the numbers at the end of her ID there).

thanks for the link. was expecting more info on some tips and tricks of community management. didn't get into too much detail on her daily job and specifics.
- Randy Ksar
I will remember that next time. Tips and tricks!
- Angela
interesting. thanks for sharing. how about when your employee gets laid-off. One of my co-workers got laid-off and his twitter account had our brand name within his id. it took over 2 months for him to move his twitter account over to a new one.
- Randy Ksar
Randy: That's also interesting. I will keep that in mind as I head a taskforce developing social media guidelines for my company. What would you had done differently knowing what you now know?
- Angela
I would of organized the employee twitter id's without the brand name. Twitter and personal brand go hand-in-hand but there is a delicate balance between personal and corporate brand.
- Randy Ksar
I agree with Randy. Best to keep a personal account and a corporate account on all mediums. If the community finds your personal account, it's okay but they must understand that it's not your professional. I was laid off as well. But at my previous company, I was using a corporate account rather than my personal brand. So the transition was seamless.
- Kimberly
Kimberly: Are there ever any instances when you don't want your community to find your personal account? Sometimes I feel like I don't want some of those folks following me elsewhere.

As the role grows and gets more coverage in the blogosphere and elsewhere, more and more people are grappling with definitions (I know I have been). To just flip things on their head for a second though, why don't we try to define what community management ISN'T - http://xrl.us/becctw
I think that is probably the ONLY pithy thing I said in that entire post ;-)
- Scott Drummond
Don't sell yourself short, Scott. That was a good and important post. You are getting some good comments there, too. I wanted to craft a response but was, well, you know, working at the time I read it. My comment would probably be related to your pithy sentence above: Community Management ISN'T community creation. Don't expect the community manager to create a community out of thin air.
- Laura Norvig
I wish a community could be formed out of thin air. Well off to read this post
- Netvalar
It isn't PR. While it is very entwined, PR and Community Management are separate entities.

Mostly to track key words on Twitter. When the function actually worked ;) I would get texts all the time when people were talking about certain key words I told Twitter to track. Hasn't been working for a few months though.

with the iphone i can manage almost anything, even comment approval.
- Sara Maternini
thanks for the comments Kimberly and Sara. Where do you work?
- Randy Ksar
Right now I'm working for a coporate blog held by an Italian telco...
- Sara Maternini
very cool. have you provided your community with mobile features? e.g. a mobile site, sms alert notification, etc..?
- Randy Ksar
ehm, no... Italian web is quite behind compare to the States or UK... They still think mobile features are the last of their problems, and actually are, as we encountered, with this blog, many problems in other "basic" areas... I use mobile for moderation, but only because the iphone has a good visualization of websites... Mobile features are on the list of 2009 implementation, though :)

How I calculated direct ROI from Social Media on a fledgling campaign. While I don't believe that ROI is not the right goal/measure for social media, my upper management insisted. Since a lot of us are feeling that pressure these days, I thought you might want to grab some of my ideas. - http://www.slideshare.net/jsoutha...
thanks for sharing, it's always interesting to see the return and value others are generating through participation in social media channels like Facebook and Twitter
