"Margarete Schön (1895 – 1985) is best known for her role as Kriemhild, the beautiful but revengeful princess of Burgundy in Fritz Lang’s silent epic Die Nibelungen (1924). The career of this German stage and film actress spanned nearly fifty years." - Mark H from Bookmarklet
"During the Second World War she appeared in approximately ten films, but she generally avoided roles in Nazi propaganda films and stayed decidedly apolitical. One exception was an uncredited bit part in Veit Harlan's nationalistic film Kolberg (1945, Veit Harlan) starring Heinrich George. One of her most popular roles of the era was the character Frau Knauer opposite Heinz Rühmann in the classic comedy Die Feuerzangenbowle/The Punch Bowl (1944, Helmut Weiss) for Terra-Filmkunst studios." - Mark H

Data Privacy, Data Retention: Tell-all telephone reveals politician’s life ~ via @flowingdata
"As the German government tries to come to a consensus about its data retention rules, Green party politician Malte Spitz retrieved six months of phone data from Deutsche Telekom (by suing them), to show what you can get from a little bit of private mobile data. He handed the data to Zeit Online, and they in turn mapped and animated practically every one of Spitz' moves over half a year and combined it with publicly available information from sources such as his appointment website, blog, and Twitter feed for more context. ... This profile reveals when Spitz walked down the street, when he took a train, when he was in an airplane. It shows where he was in the cities he visited. It shows when he worked and when he slept, when he could be reached by phone and when was unavailable. It shows when he preferred to talk on his phone and when he preferred to send a text message. It shows which beer gardens he liked to visit in his free time. All in all, it reveals an entire life." - Jamreilly from Bookmarklet

Universal property of music discovered
"ScienceDaily (Mar. 25, 2011) — Researchers at the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC) of the University of Amsterdam have discovered a universal property of musical scales. Until now it was assumed that the only thing scales throughout the world have in common is the octave." - Maitani from Bookmarklet
"1000 scales By placing scales in a coordinate system (an 'Euler lattice') they can be studied as multidimensional objects. Dr. Aline Honingh and Prof. Rens Bod from the ILLC did this for nearly 1,000 scales from all over the world, from Japan to Indonesia and from China to Greece. To their surprise, they discovered that all traditional scales produced star-convex patterns. This was... more... - Maitani

"Marcus Porcius Cato Uticensis (95 BC, Rome – April 46 BC, Utica), commonly known as Cato the Younger (Cato Minor) to distinguish him from his great-grandfather (Cato the Elder), was a politician and statesman in the late Roman Republic, and a follower of the Stoic philosophy. He was also a famous orator. He is remembered for his legendary stubbornness and tenacity (especially in his lengthy conflict with Gaius Julius Caesar), as well as his immunity to bribes, his moral integrity, and his famous distaste for the ubiquitous corruption of the period." - Eivind from Bookmarklet

"In 1921, director F.W. Murnau wanted to make a horror film (you might more accurately say he wanted to invent the horror film) based on Bram Stoker's novel, `Dracula,' but was denied the rights to the property by Stoker's estate. Ignoring the niceties of copyright law, he unabashedly filed off the serial numbers and made the movie anyway. The resulting work remains a must see for any serious student of film. Be warned! This is not your urbane, charming, Bela Lugosi vampire. This is not your Gary Oldman vampire transforming himself from grotesque to handsome at will. This is not your dashing superhero vampire lightheartedly scampering around in 'True Blood.' Oh no. This is a hideous, disease infested creature that descends to us direct from the anxious heart of the Dark Ages in Eastern Europe. Direct from the gut fear of the Black Death. Wooden stakes, silver chains and brandished crosses will avail you nothing. This is evil, singular, powerful and pure." - Bluesun 2600 from Bookmarklet

Just Say Yes: The Greatest Generation on Crack — The Good Men Project Magazine
“Most of the addiction field has long been focused on young people, because it’s believed that if you keep someone away from drugs early in life, they’re unlikely to start using later. But we’re seeing more and more baby boomers in trouble, and we’re seeing some people—we call them ‘late-onset’ addicts—who never abused alcohol or drugs and then start later in life.” - mersenne from Bookmarklet
If he does suffer from the disease of addiction, could it have been dormant for most of his life? Yes, argue many addiction s researchers, who liken addiction to other chronic diseases—Type II diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease—that have a genetic component and an onset and course that vary depending on behavioral and environmental factors. - mersenne
Larry, 58-year-old boomer who went through treatment at Hanley, puts it this way: “With the lower retirement age, 50somethings like myself are coming out of the workforce and into the world of doing nothing, and we’ve accumulated enough bad habits to really be in trouble. Many of us don’t feel 55 or 60. We feel 35, we’ve been successful, and by God, we’re going to do exactly what we... more... - mersenne
