Op-Ed Columnist - Anger Has Its Place - NYTimes.com
"No more than five or six minutes elapsed from the time the police were alerted to the possibility of a break-in at a home in a quiet residential neighborhood and the awful clamping of handcuffs on the wrists of the distinguished Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. If Professor Gates ranted and raved at the cop who entered his home uninvited with a badge, a gun and an attitude, he didn’t rant and rave for long. The 911 call came in at about 12:45 on the afternoon of July 16 and, as The Times has reported, Mr. Gates was arrested, cuffed and about to be led off to jail by 12:51. The charge: angry while black. The president of the United States has suggested that we use this flare-up as a “teachable moment,” but so far exactly the wrong lessons are being drawn from it — especially for black people. The message that has gone out to the public is that powerful African-American leaders like Mr. Gates and President Obama will be very publicly slapped down for speaking up and speaking out... more... - Compuworki from Bookmarklet

“Twitter Rape Case”: MC Hammer’s Cousin Arrested
"Marvin Turrell Grant, the cousin of MC Hammer who makes frequent appearances on A&E’s “Hammertime” TV show, was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of raping a woman he met through Twitter. A 40-year old woman claims that the star, known on the show as “Bigg Marv” and “Lyin’ Marv” (and @biggmarv on Twitter), made advances after the pair went on a date. SFGate writes: According to her account, she and Grant had become acquainted days earlier when they began twittering and e-mailing each other. Grant, a regular on the “Hammertime” TV show, told the victim that he was filming in Las Vegas and just had flown into San Francisco International Airport, police said. The alleged victim told police that the two agreed to meet Tuesday at a Livermore hotel. She drove to Livermore, rented a hotel room and waited for Grant, who took her out to dinner before they returned to the hotel room. Grant’s accuser claims that an assault then took place. Marv twice agreed to turn himself in to police, but... more... - Compuworki from Bookmarklet

Music Review - Graeme Sinden - A London D.J. Uses Disruptive Flights of Fancy in a Basement Nightclub - Review - NYTimes.com
"In London, Graeme Sinden D.J.’s for thousands; hosts a weekly radio show on Kiss 100, a major hip-hop and dance music station; and is known for his remixes of grime, R&B and, recently, Bjork. These were facts that maybe one-third of the couple of hundred or so people at the basement nightclub Love on Saturday night, where he was D.J.ing, seemed to know or care about. Such is the conundrum facing the overseas dance music star in New York, where the lack of interest can be chilling. (Just ask Armand Van Helden, the longtime hometown nightclub kingpin who dropped in to listen for a spell.) Sinden, who D.J.’s and produces under his last name, works in a genre sometimes called fidget-house, thanks to its glitchy, disruptive flights of fancy over punishing, throbbing 4/4 beats. Owing debts to the funk-influenced electro of the early 1980s and to early strains of Chicago house music, it’s also absorbed tricks from more popular dance genres like progressive house and big beat: arena-scale... more... - Compuworki from Bookmarklet

Kanye West Not ‘King of Pop,’ Says Kanye West - ArtsBeat Blog - NYTimes.com
"For all of Kanye West’s boasts and braggadocio, not even he thinks he’s the King of Pop. When a satirical Web site called ScrapeTV.com ran a story some weeks ago in which Mr. West, the rapper, appeared to claim the “King of Pop” title for himself after Michael Jackson’s death, a few legitimate media outlets seemed to believe it was a true story. (Among the fake but apparently convincing quotes attributed to Mr. West: “I have nothing but respect for Michael but someone needs to pick up where he left off and there’s nobody better than me to do that. I am the new King of Pop.”) Word must have reached Mr. West himself, because at around 3 p.m., this afternoon, we received the following email message from his publicist: Statements attributed to Kanye West naming himself the “new King Of Pop” are totally bogus and counterfeit. Around the same time, the following all-caps statement appeared on Mr. West’s official blog, which we reproduce here at great risk to our eyesight and yours: I WAS... more... - Compuworki from Bookmarklet

"The bookings may be the largest component of an event like this, but they’re not all. There’s the atmosphere, the design and the environment: everything that locates the experience in a specific place and time. All Points West needs some work in that department. Anyone who has attended Coachella will recognize the pointy tents, the layout and the Burning Man-esque art installations. As I watched Chairlift play on the small Queen of the Valley stage, I looked to my right and saw one of those art works, a grid of electric lights blinking against the tent’s white plastic wall. Something similar was at Cochella this year, and while it looked majestic and mysterious there in the California dusk, it seemed out of place in New Jersey. Yet the more I looked at the lights the more they suggested the flickering nighttime skyline of Manhattan, something they could only do here. Maybe this California transplant needs to be bolder about establishing a New York (and New Jersey) identity, or maybe it will just take some more getting used to." - Compuworki from Bookmarklet

"What makes a music festival reflect the place where it’s being held? Historically, that connection has been key to its success. In the 1960s, Woodstock and Monterey Pop crystallized the hippie subcultures of the East and West Coasts. More recently, Bonnaroo in Tennessee gives a bucolic home to the jam bands that have always had one foot in Southern rock, and Coachella captures the stylish mix of indie rock and dance music endemic to Southern California. What about All Points West? It’s produced by the people behind Coachella, and for the last two years the big question has been whether it would have its own distinct character or be merely a smaller imitation of Coachella. (Well, the convenience of the ferries may have been a more immediate concern.) In some ways All Points West succeeds beautifully at framing a New York-centric event. Jay-Z was an inspired booking, and there is a strain of New York hip-hop historicism running through the lineup, with Q-Tip, Organized Konfusion and... more... - Compuworki from Bookmarklet

The Checkered Career of Philip Schwab, Demolition Man - NYTimes.com
"Demolition Man" Published: July 31, 2009 FEW people outside Buffalo, where he grew up, have ever heard of Philip B. Schwab. That is not by accident. DEUTSCHE BANK, 2007 Damaged on Sept. 11, 2001, the former bank building caught fire, killing two firefighters. The building was being taken down, part of a project on which Mr. Schwab worked as a consultant in 2004. Investigators said a standpipe, a crucial safety feature, had been dismantled, hampering efforts to put out the blaze. Yes, he once controlled seven banks, a casino in Reno and a big chunk of Hilton Head Island. Yes, he once operated the largest demolition company in the country, tore down the old Madison Square Garden and gutted the original Yankee Stadium. Yes, he’s like a legend in what he calls “the wrecking business.” But over the years, Mr. Schwab has developed an aversion to publicity and public records. Several years ago, when New York City officials served a subpoena on what they called one of his front companies,... more... - Compuworki from Bookmarklet
